I've got '03 e85 3.0i with automatic transmission and my zed consumed ~200 ml per 10000 km. I agree with you for lack of storages in these cars. My car have DSP (subwoofers instead of storages behind the seats).Cupholders in e85 are very useful thing. :) The best to keep your wallet is central storage with changer, because it's locks with the central locking :) I've got a m sport suspension and styling 108 wheels with spacers and it fits perfectly :) Nice content Joel, videos with e85 are very rare , keep it up! Greetings from Poland ! :D

I’ve got the 3.0i se with normal tyres and the ride is very smooth My previous car was a cooper s and that was super firm, especially with run flats, when I went over a small pothole it felt like the wheel had came off 😂

Your points are well taken. With regard to oil consumption, there are 4 main oil leak areas: Valve Cover Gasket, Oil Pump Gasket, Oil Pan Gasket, and Vanos Oil Line Gaskets. Also, utilizing the Sport Button and a heavy foot will 'spit' more oil vapor back into the intake to be burned (an emission control item.) As for the ride quality, this has been a sore spot for me and you are spot on about the feel. I've just spent over $4,000 (3,600 pounds) to install an adjustable suspension (Koni) and more compliant tires i.e., Pirelli Nero's. The initial result, a better ride with a lot of traction and various suspension settings from soft to firm to play with. Back to oil consumption, I burn about 1/2 quart (0.47 liters) per 7,000 miles, but I hwy cruise most of the time. If I play with my Z I will burn oil.

I have the 18" wheels and run-flat tyres. Next swap will be for non-run-flats. I agree the ride can be harsh. The 18's fill the wheel well arches well. The headlamp dazzle is not an issue for me, but I am quite tall. I have yet to need to add oil, I change it more frequently than recommended - but since I store the car in winter, I like to put fresh oil in before it goes away. I would not bother with retrofitting drinks holders - they are flimsy and not very helpful. I had not seen the storage cubbies behind the seats. Cars with the premium pkg have extra speakers there. For some reason there are storage nets behind the read seats. I can't be bothered to move the seats forward to access them and in my driving position the seats are all the way back.

Do you have any reinforcement bars installed for stiffness around corners? is there any need for it? Are you fine with the 230hp or you feel you need more? Are there any leakage from the top when it rains? Can I use the car when it snows? What hiddrn issues does it have? What mods can I do to it to get what hp? cost?

Great video.All its shortcomings are the same that irritate me as well. It is an exciting drive though so there is an awful lot I like about the car. That 6 seems like a great engine etc. One question. Do you drain your tubes that hold the pistons that raise and lower your roof. I have not had any trouble yet however I heard if you don't drain after driving in rain they can fill with water and rust up the pistons. Is there a drain. Its so low I can't find a drain. When I had the oil change and it was on the hoist the technicians couldn't find it either.. Just wondered if you drained them?

I recently did a front brake job on my '06 Z4 3.0i and replaced them with ceramic pads along with both front rotors. The new pads require slightly more pedal pressure but the wheels stay much cleaner but still a little dirtier than the rear wheels. Also, I found the pad wear sensors can be restored with a dab of solder thus shorting the open circuited sensor. The solder should rub off once the pads wear down again and require replacement.

You can install cup holder right? My z4 is from the same year and has cup holders that fit in the same space as yours. I think if you buy it online you should be able to install them yourself. Mine had faulty cup holders and I bought in on amazon. Our you could theoretically buy a new ac vent w/ a cup holder.

Hi Joel, I also went for the 35i E89, had it for 8 weeks and still love it to bits. I was looking for an older one and watched all your vids, but that roof motor problem just tipped me over to the newer model. Hate the run flat tyres and can't wait to run them down. Watching your vids and knowing the difference between the cars, it would be a good upgrade for ya, when youve saved the penny's, keep up the good work and get some more drone shots, there great. Just got my '03 Z4 about six months ago. I love the car. It does have a few idiosyncrasies for sure, but in general, its a rewarding ride. Im curious about your oil consumption though. I have a 2.5i, and havent noticed any consumption at all. It did receive an oil pan replacement prior to my buying it, and also only has 67k miles, so maybe thats why. Nice ride, though, and nice video.
@itsjoel

Hey Ben, that’s awesome; I’m glad you’re enjoying it! Think my oil consumption was actually down to a faulty DISA valve, as since I replaced that, the consumption has been far less.

My 2p. .. keep the wheels, change the shocks and springs. If its eating oil, find out from where. At the end of the day, any oil leaks mean potential problems. Is it leaking on the ground or burning it? On the ground, probably cheap fix. Burning it? Then things get more complicated and expensive.

Check out the "o2pilot" mod if you've got bad oil consumption, assuming the CCV isn't blocked or it isn't leaking it should fix it. Basically it increases crankcase vacuum, which helps the piston rings seal better. They were a new design for the M54 and not the best thought out it seems

I also drive a low sports car so being blinded by SUVs is pretty common. A top advanced driving technique for when you’re being blinded by oncoming traffic at night is to look at and position yourself by the nearside curb/line. That way you won’t be blinded. Enjoy the Z4!

Hi Joel, love the videos. Keep up the good work. Just about to pull the trigger on my own Z4 purchase. Was wondering if you have had any maintenance issues with your Z4. I believe you purchased yours for less than £5k two years ago. Have you had any major issues/expenses? Suppose I'm wondering - This is such a great car, and at an amazing price ... what's the catch?
@itsjoel
@itsjoel 5 жыл бұрын
Hey buddy, thank you! Really appreciate you watching. Correct, was actually closer to £3k what I paid for mine. I guess you are getting an old car, with high mileage - however that really is it. The 3.0 blocks especially are extremely reliable I’ve never had any issues. The only thing to look out for is that the roof motor is working ok and that there is not a ticking sound when the engine is idling, as that can be the Vanos. Otherwise, they’re an absolute bargain and are starting to go up in value!

On your points: 1: Ride quality, it is a sports car with sports suspension so it is not going to be comfortable on small bumpy roads, if it is on run flats the problem will be made much worse, change to normal tyres, it will improve massively. It is no worse that a Mini Cooper S on similar roads. 2: Wheel gaps, that is what happens if you choose a model with 103 wheels which are 17 x 8". Go for a model with 18 x 8.5" wheels to fill the arches nicer (most 3L have 18 x 8.5") 3: Re the oil consumption, BMWs do tend to use more oil than many cars, but that is often because they are not looked after. If previous owners fitted good quality C3 spec oil and changed it either annually or before 10,000 miles, then it would fair better. Poor oil and long durations between oil changes particularity if a car is used for short journeys can cause the oil breathers to block up then oil consumption will increase. My 3.0i uses 500ml every 4,000 miles. 4: Lack of storage, fully agree, storage isn't brilliant but is is a sports car. 5: Getting blinded at night, yep, the lower you sit, the more you will be blinded particularity by drivers of newer range rovers, with very bright lights that sit high (try driving a Westfield 7). Not a lot you can do about it other than drive a 4x4 instead.

I think because of these reasons, may be a Mazda mx5 mk iii would be a better choice, its not going to be as fast as the z4 or its not gonna make any great engine noise, but its existing, you get the folding metal roof which is better in every way and since its your daily use car, you can save some major amount of money on your monthly fuel cost in the mx 5. So give the mk3 a try, I think you will like it more than the z4.

I have driven the Mk iii mx-5 - I hated it! Really slow, sluggish, not great to look at and the fuel economy wasn’t any better! I did used to have a mkii mx-5 however and loved it, although that was less practical than the Z4

Things that annoy me about my 2003 Z4 2.5 (original owner): 1- The ridiculous cost of repairs (the dealership wanted $330 just to replace an the glass on the driver's side mirror), I paid $42 at the local auto glass shop. 2- I have the haze on the headlight lenses removed every year. 3- The struts had to be replaced at 40,000. 4- The run-flat tires are expensive, don't last very long, reduce gas mileage, and ride like hell. I replace them with regular Michelins recommended for the BMW 3 series, much smoother ride. 5 - The headlights (even with cleaned/polished lenses) are not very good. I should have psent the extra $ for an upgrade. 6- Interior storage is an issue (but I knew it would be). With all that said, it's the best car I ever owned and I love it.

Hello, I have a 2003 Z4, I noticed you complained about the wheel gap and the rough ride, well bud, how about a higher profile tire, which will fill the gap and also the extra tire means extra cushion for the ride!! Two issues solved! Maybe go with a 60 or 70 series tire! I personally am running 225-40-18s -front and 255-45-18 rear and it fills the wheel gap fantastic, think they came off a x90 BMW SUV? 8s up front 9.5 in the rear, love the look, don't care about a soft ride, much rather look tough and mean!! The way a sports car should!! Like your comments, best of luck to you!! If I could post a pic, I'd show you how the car look with those 18s, pretty sure you'd like it!! Cheers!

I've a 3 ltr Z4 E85 and don't have that oil issue,owned it for 10years,got rid of the runflats as the ride was terrible just have normal low profile tyres on my wheels,you could get coil overs for it so u can adjust the height to your own preferences but again lowering it further means more harsher ride,you should look at changing the third break light and indicaters to clear lenses,get rid of the amber colour,makes the car more modern looking,also lose the aerial and buy a short stubby aerial for the car,way more sporty looking,I've have done loads of mods to mine since owning it,the list is endless and I could go on and on..

Oil consumption is abnormal even if BMW state that it is normal, but that tends to be an issue with the n52 engines, as for ride quality which is more or less cured in the newer Z4s with adaptive suspension, on rough roads change to a softer settings and on smooth roads back to a firmer settings. Maybe upgrading to a newer model may reduce your level of dislikes.

@dakibmw
@dakibmw 5 жыл бұрын
@@itsjoel Are you sure it was DISA? Did you change your oil at the same time? I've noticed that the oil consumption is almost non-existant when the oil is new, and at the end of the oil change interval (which is 2 years for me, I make around 5000 miles/year) it goes up to BMW-says-it's-normal ~1L/1000 miles. I wanted to do O2pilot mod (google it if you don't know what is it), but I'll wait for the oil consuption to re-appear, (btw we have the same engine, mine is also 3.0 M54 in a 330Ci). One more thing - bigger wheels shouldn't get rid of a wheel gap, you should always stick to BMW recommended sizes of wheels/tyres combo. What that means is that the diameter of the wheel should always be around the same-ish, be it 17'', 18'' or 19'' wheel. for example, 225/40-18 and 225/45-17 (both BMW recommended sizes) have in a mm or two the same wheel+tyre diameter (634-637 mm).

1. Who buys a 2 seater convertible roadster to right on rough / pebbly terrain? BMW is known for its firmer ride. You probably feel it more because you've bought a convertible as an everyday car. 2. The gap is an aesthetic 'inconvenience' for you. 3. Oil change ideally should be at around 5,000 miles. You want to use Synthetic Oil. If you're changing it 'every 6 months' then that's 10,000 miles - not abnormal. Saying that, if you are requiring to change the oil more regularly than 5,000 miles then you probably have issues with the engine. 4. You have a 2 seater convertible that has more generous boot space than most convertibles. Complaining about where to put your wallet...how about your pocket? Like you, if I'm going on a long drive-sh somewhere, I have a backpack. I just put my stuff in there and put in the feet area of the passenger seat. Alternatively, you can just put it in the boot. 5. You're driving a low to the ground convertible. Not only is it annoyingly normal to have lights of other cars affect you more, but you also have to be careful when it comes to how visible you are in the mirrors of bigger cars. In conclusion - bar the oil change 'hate', I think maybe you've 'outgrown' a convertible. Either you buy a bigger car or you buy a bigger car for your daily commute / use and have the Z4 so you can enjoy it. In such a situation, you'll begin to appreciate it a lot more for what it is.

Hi mate, it seems you are looking at your car from the wrong angle and should rather perceive (and treat) it as the coming young timer. two things: 1. your oil consumption is NOT normal. 2. compared to other brands/models it has lots of storage room EVEN in hidden corners. concerning the smoothness of the ride. no, it is not. especially the 2003-2005 model gives you the opportunity to feel the road like no other BMW ever will. and if there are cart ruts, you will get sucked in and you will have to steer against them. that does make it a dangerous ride, but it is also sth you will never experience in comfy and modern cars which in turn makes it a super fun and powerful toy. you have sth very very exceptional there that you cannot buy no more. on top, this is a Chris Bangle design and the very first model of a continuing series. 15 years ago people turned around for that beauty. in 15 years, people still turn around for it. enjoy!
