A common mistake people make is to buy rainbow hued propeller beanies. The trick is to buy one that has a maximum of three colors.

Absolutely agree. Personally, I prefer a nice two colour combo. Anything more than three comes off looking tacky.

Guys, guys you are getting off topic here. I think we all can agree that the way to pull off propeller beanies are classic propeller beanies. You know the ones that we still will be wearing in 20 years, and never get outdated.

Loved seeing your "baby pictures". I've made quite a few myself including not wearing a jacket to a formal band performance when I played in my high school band. One of the brothers - it was a catholic school - lent me his. For days later, I had people coming up to me asking about that Hideous black jacket. LOL. They wanted to know where I got it and what possessed me to wear it.

Hi GG! I'm 16 years old, turning 17 in July, and I've just discovered vintage thrift stores. They're fantastic for me as while I can mostly afford the better brands, I like the style of very classic 1940-50 business wear, and vintage stores cater more to this. However, I've yet to find a nice jacket or pants that fit me. All too often, they are huge for my size, 44 inch chest and 33 inch arms or something large like that. Being 16, I have a hard time finding vintage classic clothing in my size. Do you have any advice about this kind of thing, or should I wait until I grow, and for right now stick with newer items?

Hey I know this is a bit late but getting things tailored is always an option
@didamnesia3575
@didamnesia3575 Жыл бұрын
Learn to hem your own pants, buy a cheap or used sewing machine that is new-ish. Meaning one you can find bobbins for in the local store or Amazon. So, learn to hem your own pants then you can buy pants that fit around the waist but are too long. Or, find a tailor. Most dry cleaners have tailor services. Call around. Get your measurements taken and get into a physical shape you think you'll keep. Are you large and losing weight, or small and bulking up? Or are you just a dude that stays the same. Also... you don't need 100 outfits. You should get a couple things you can wear often that you love that can define your look. They don't have to be expensive. Women love men that look like they take care of themselves
@glossymouse7712
@glossymouse7712 11 ай бұрын
@@mr.potato5471Now I'm late too, but tailoring is really not an option. A tailor can help you only if the jacket is slightly too big for you. However, most teenagers have wide shoulders but very skinny chests and arms. Adults are much bulkier, usually a few numbers larger. A jacket can be made smaller by 2 numbers at most, anything more is 1) a back breaking job for the tailor and 2) the jacket will lose the original pattern and always look weird.

A navy (even lighter coloured) and a charcoal (gray) suit are a must. I'm 43 and since I was 17 I have already used up about 15 suits so far, 7 of them plain black or pinstripe. Black is next to useless I've had a bespoke navy suit made last year (the vitalis canonico fabric is the best in look and feel so far) and found an isaia charcoal suit on sale which was altered at a proper tailor. All the above based on comments received.

I find that silly ties are quite useful for situations where you fear you might be over-dressed or look too serious if you wear a classic tie. I rarely dress formal for work or when hanging out with friends. (I'm a web developer) If I show up to a work party where only a handful of people are wearing suits and some are wearing just t-shirts, and I'm in a fancy suit and classic tie, I'd get the reaction "Hah, what's with the overkill outfit? are you trying to get a job in sales?" But if I wear a slightly silly tie, I get more positive reactions.

Best budget tip for beginner gentlemen (in the USA): K&G I got my first three suits (a black DB suit, a navy three piece, and a nice gray) on their buy one get two free deal, and I think I spent around $225 on the suits alone which also meant there was wallet room for tailoring as well as getting new shoes and ties.

I agree with #1, #3 and partly #2. However, it is possible to wear four patterned parts (suit, shirt, tie, pocket square) but mistakes are made very easily. In fact if one is not exceptionelly gifted the results will be most likely not pleasant. But sometimes you can get a truly great result, too. And #5 (buying at sale): there is nothing wrong with it IF one has enough knowledge and enough basics in the closet. Especially if the buyer has a rare size that is quite often not sold while the other sizes are gone. And sale is for adding special items, like linen summer jackets or a Harris Tweed jacket for winter. Or a bolder suit pattern that can be worn only once in a while. On sale the costs are cutted down so wearing it not so often doesnt mean you have too high costs per wear. And maybe you can get a dark blue suit single breasted suit with three buttons when the store and fashion turns to 2-button-suits. It is still a classic kind of suit and even the better suit for certain body types.

Oh, shoot. I just bought a black suit for a wedding I will be attending to, and the only 'formal' shoes I have are boxy shoes, so, yeah. I guess that'll have to do for now. Anyway, Sven, I've been a subscriber for a few months now, and I love your channel. To be completely honest, I'm not really the type of guy who dresses up or anything like that, but I'm in the (slow) process of my closet and evolving my 'style', and your videos have been really insightful and helpful. Besides, now I don't have to ask my girlfriend for help while tying my tie!

Just as you Sven, my family purchased things on sale. Even to this day, my father has a hard time purchasing something at full price. As a youth, I had champagne taste with a beer budget. Often I purchased items that did not fit properly (and knew nothing about having garments tailored). I later learned about the buy once/cry once philosophy. But I continue to exercise restraint, and purchase within my means. Because of my lack of having nice garments as child, I tend to overcompensate now. I'm a bit ashamed to tell anyone how many shirts and sport-coats I own.

What I've found useful is making the acquaintance with the sales staff. If they know your size, color and style preferences, they will call you and let you know when they have new inventory they think you will like. You don't have to buy everything all at once, you can keep adding an item here and there if you stick with classic looks and coordinate your garments.

I think a loud tie can work, if the rest of the outfit is very conservative. If you had a dark navy two-piece suit, white shirt and white pocket square, your tie can be as bold and over-the-top as you want in my opinion (as long as it's not plain daft)

The first suit I ever bought was a solid navy DB suit and I bought a charcoal DB at the same time, both were on sale about 1/2 price at $599AUD each, I paid extra for alterations. Bought these about 3 years ago and still love them, they fit quite well and attract quite a lot of compliments. I'm well aware that DB is usually a strange choice for a first suit but I really like them and have no issue with what people say or think. Totally agree with shoes, I despise boxy shoes, they just look nasty. Also very fussy with my ties, I usually go for something quite minimal.

just the other day, i bought myself and my dad those black leather jackets cut like a suit jacket. honestly, i only got them bc my dad loves leather jackets and black suits are kind of what he usually needs to wear in court, since he's a lawyer. Plus, we were moving to a pretty cold place and it was more for functionality than style. If I could do it all over again, though, I'd have gotten him a tan leather jacket instead with a more matted finish, since that could be used in more casual occasions.

I know everything about black suits and I am aware of the fact that they tend to become a bit groomy... But realy, as a neutral in an office they are far more neutral than a caramal brown suit! The only person doing business turning up in all sorts of colored suits I know of, was Al Capone! For normal business: navy, grey or black, you can't go wrong with any of those 3 and it is mostly a matter of your skintone what looks best on you.

Black is too formal for business wear unless it's just the jacket over tan or khaki pants. If you feel you must wear loafers with this outfit, by all means make sure your socks match the color of your shoes, which should be black or Cordovan. White shirt, rep tie. If Cordovan shoes, pick up the maroon color in the tie. Otherwise almost any tie color will work with black shoes.

I have made ALL of these mistakes. I still have a fondness for black suits. I just know where it's appropriate to wear one now even though I don't own one anymore.

Really like this combination, just a touch flashy but still traditional. As one diagnosed with OCD, I am distracted by the ties with one edge facing out. What is the reason for this? I go with either fully out or with a dimple (forget the correct word, French for spoon). Thank you.

I do wear black suits simply because I love them. If someone will not take me seriously because of the color of suit I'm wearing then guess what? I don't want anything to do with them to begin with. Oh and women love my mickey mouse tie, so stop hating man! Okay I'm kidding about the mickey mouse tie, please don't wear that. Had to google the leather tie though and boy... I'm glad I never witnessed that trend. Good video once again, keep up the great work!

I also dissent on black suits. I don't know how they are received in business contexts in metropolises, but I see they are very popular out here in the Blue Ridge for church wear, with both men in "professional" office jobs and tradesmen who like to dress appropriately at more formal occasions, and also with youth. They can fit in with business, church, parties, weddings, and funerals (and consequently are good for t

Sorry, I hit the wrong button and don't seem to be able to call it back and finish the message. Black suits are useful for men and youths who don't wear a suit or coat and tie every day, for the venues I listed. Also, as the salesman in a very good mens' store pointed out to my nephew and me as I was helping him get suited for a foreign trip, the black suit coat can be used as a sports coat when the pants wear out. Suits of some patterned fabrics can be used the same way, such as herringbone or glen plaid, but a pinstripe can't, and many navy suit coats can't.

Your videos are fantastic. Thank you. You repeat lessons my very "Old School" Father taught me. He was born in 1908, so "OLD" style is the operative word. Etiquette, foods, wines, poetry, music, arts, literature, and, indeed, fashion, all the qualities of a "Renaissance Gentleman" were what he modeled and instilled in me, making his best efforts to be a good Dad. I heard a sweet quote today: "Gentlemen never boast about their conquests, in war, or love." My lifestyle and fashion choices are quite eccentric, by your standards- I am purging my closets and that included ALL striped, "business type" ties, shirts, and suits. Mainly because I don't do "suit type business". Now, my fashion focus is to merely get a couple of suits for dancing the Argentine Tango, with the appropriate accessories- again, thanks to you! You've inspired me to be even more ruthless as I create new closet spaces.

I disagree about black, I think black is classic and versatile enough, in my opinion more stylish than navy blue which I find is too heteronormative. I own 5 suits, I don’t wear them often one black, one blue, one charcoal, one light grey and my black suit for black tie events. Where I live the brown suit you’re wearing is a bigger style mistake than all of the ones you list. I really enjoy your videos though, and I generally agree with you. You have an interesting voice
