My number one accessory, which ties in with quite a bit of the ones you suggest in the video is a fan. It will keep you cool, help with sweat management, help with heart rate, allow you to row longer and harder.

I’ve lost almost 65 pounds using my rower and used it daily. I haven’t been able to use it only once this year though. I had a double discectomy. Two discs in my neck removed and 3 vertebrae fused together. 12 weeks in a neck collar and so much pain before surgery that I couldn’t row. Hoping to start again in 2 months. 52 years old and last year was the best I’ve ever felt thanks to the rower.

I’ve been dealing with sweaty hands for four years and never considered the simplistic elegance of sweatbands for my wrists. Brilliant suggestion. Best $5 I’ve spent for my training. They work for kettlebell workouts, too. Thanks for the great tip, Shane

All necesary. I advocate for putting a ventilator in front of you while rowing to help with sweat issue, although it doesn't eliminate the other advices to deal with it. But removing the heat air around you is very usefull.

Very helpful advice. Useful, well spoken videos. I still recommend a floor mat, for a couple reasons. My wood floors were getting rub marks over time from the rower feet. The right-thickness rubber mat eliminated that problem. I also like that any sweat that escapes my mitigation efforts will fall on the mat and not on the floor where salt/water stains could occur. Mandatory? Maybe not, but this was the right solution for my setup. Much regard for your life-affirming viewpoint.

As a female 10k a session rower I find a cushion in top three must brings. I found rare blisters on hands nothing like sores on the cheeks. I’ve also experimented with my knickers and gym short combinations to minimise chaffing. Must have: Water, sweat towel and pillow. Mine is cheap IKEA cushion sold as extra for dining chairs or stools, not more than 2 cm thick and WASHABLE!

Good stuff, Shane! I’ve run into need for all of this. The sweat management is a big one, along with the HRM & Ergdata. Progress is almost impossible to check without them. I also added an EndureRow seat, and use it with the silicone cover at times. Sometimes, having lots of options are a big plus where you can use some for some workouts, especially long ones, or not on shorter sets. I would add that a floor mat is a necessity if you happen to have your machine on carpet and don’t want a stinky mess under you in short order!

Only been rowing for 8 months. After just jumping on the Concept 2 as is and getting going with you I quickly realized a few accessories would improve my experience. First as others have said I got a floor mat as I was getting tired of cleaning all the sweat droplets off my wood floors. A decent pair of flat-soled trainers and then a good set of sweat proof, don’t-fall-off-when-moving wireless earbuds. Avoids having to crank the volume to hear over the machine and wake the family in the early morning hours. Last, and definitely the one that has been the game changer is the ipad mount I built with Ram Mounts (clamp [RAP-B-121-BU], double socket arm [RAM-B-201U-C], x-grip tablet holder [RAM-HOL-UN8BU]). Attaches to the monitor arm and holds my tablet just below the pm5 display. I did add a small block of wood into the cavity of the arm so the clamp doesn’t overly compress the plastic. Keeps Shane in sight and me trying to keep up!

Good video. Loved the end of it. You don’t need to track your data to infinite details. I’ve been rowing on a Hydrow rower for over 2 years. This year I decided to cancel my subscription because I couldn’t stand the pressure of keeping track of my data. Making sure I don’t miss a day. I still track my data, I don’t know why, but I still feel like I took a step in the right direction. I do my own thing. After two years, I don’t need Hydrow to motivate me to do a workout. I do it because I I’m healthier when I workout. I also look better and feel better when I workout. At times I do miss the analysis I used to get from Strava. But, I do enjoy rowing better now. So that’s a win.

If you're in an apartment with carpet or even wood, def use a floor mat. Sweat and the rower can mess up the flooring and that's on you when you leave. That's the only reason I have the mat.

I went into the household store and bought some PVC bathroom floor mat, cut it to seat size and applied 2 layers. Almost perfect solution for bucks. These seat pads are almost unknown here (Hungary) so the price doubles instantly when I add the shipping cost. On the other hand: I'm so busy with maintaining the right technique that I'd be unable to watch streaming while rowing. :D

I row on a simple rower that doesn't give me any data but it's funny, I can feel when I'm doing better or worse :P This saves me a lot of money on tech. So I'm totally with the relaxed frame of mind when it comes to performance. I do use over-headphones and my iPad which is on a small table in an ikea cookbook stand to the side/front of the rower, with my water bottle. I'm in a cooler climate so no need for a fan, I open a window :) Thanks for the videos which keep it interesting (even if I repeat some of them often)!

@@DarkHorseRowing Same reaction here! I was actually expecting it to be all about gadgets covered under #5 "general accessories" that go on a rower vs. a more wholistic list that is more practical (apparel, etc). But +1 on the shorts with liner! I can't say that I agree with the floor mat not always being necessary but maybe more as a floor protector for sweat (concrete, no, wood floors or carpet yes)!

love this. 1) phone holder is #1 and i recommend the one that comes with the machine because it fits all monitors so you can take it on vacay with you or to the gym and it'll fit. 2) i have spandex shorts that are specifically for erging. One size up and super soft, buttery fabric that stays put. i hate shorts that squeeze my stomach when i'm at the catch. 3) i highly recommend a good speaker or sound system with Bluetooth so you can clearly hear the music. I hate working out with headphones at home but i want to hear so i hook my phone up to the Home Mini next to my erg. 4) bandanas for sweat management. buy a ton. easy to wash and dry, you can dampen them before putting them on if it's super hot, work around the head, arms, wrists, etc.

More manageable size but when I ordered my rowing machine I also got a 70 lb kettlebell... fortunately they didn't have to be delivered the same day. If you sweat a lot, your floor can get damaged from sweat, that is quite aggressive chemically (salty liquid). Not a serious issue, when you can just mop the floor after exercise, but it becomes a problem, when you have a carpet under your machine. A carpet flooring soaked with sweat may rather sooner than later smell unpleasantly. Floor mats normally are not designed primarily to fix the position of the machine, but to protect the floor from sweat. Of course, buying the expensive, dedicated floor mat is not always the best option because of rather high prices of such accessories, but there are plenty of cheaper options to be bought in local hardware store, or even ready to be used, stored in your basement or garage.

This was great and very timely. I am most likely going to be rowing for the first time in public in October! I am sure underwear wouldn't be wise! I cannot believe how much I sweat on the erg. It is insane and disgusting. That said, I find that I absolutely need a floor mat otherwise my rug and hardwood floors would just be soaking it up. At least with a mat I can towel dry it down. I really want to get into heart rate monitoring and training, but those torso belts are just enough that it seems like an annoying hurdle and something else to obsess over. I prefer to wear shoes of some sort. Barefoot seems to bother my heels on the foot rests. I went with a pair of minimalist "barefoot" style shoes as to not absorb force during the drive. Also for me personally I am pretty blind so I wear an old pair of frames that I don't mind getting all sweaty as my "good glasses" I don't want to see them get that kind of wear and tear. -Chris
