Eye witness testimony stands up in all court cases.So if it is good enough for a court of law and to send people to the gas chamber....Also all 4 of your reasons could be reduced down to 2 or at the least numbered correctly.maybe you should edit again...why did you come at me with this remedial doublespeak.
@KinguCooky
@KinguCooky 7 жыл бұрын
+Xen I don't think going to court with just a pair of eyewitnesses would be a good idea, but it's possible, I suppose...however, I wouldn't think much of the justice system, and I certainly wouldn't be one of the jury that said guilty when considering there is no physical evidence to draw on. Absolutely not, and nor should I. The list was representative of how these arguments tend to go; somebody claims there is a ton of evidence; they are asked to show the evidence; they link to a blog article or some such thing that has a person claiming to have seen or know someone who has seen the evidence; it turns out that somebody being told that said evidence exists is still not tangible evidence supporting the claim. The most likely explanation for giants is that the ancients saw the massive bones of extinct animals and then created stories to account for them. They would have had to fit them into their worldview, somehow. We already have good reason to suspect that at least the Greeks did this. Be honest with yourself, what do you think the ancients thought when they saw a five-foot femur sticking out of the mountainside?

Odin isn’t the Norse God of War. That would be Tyr. Odin is the Allfather.
@ryangoodman5371
@ryangoodman5371 4 жыл бұрын
Zedd Smith Odin was also the god of war along with Tyr, Thor and others. Odin was also the Allfather but also the god of wisdom. Norse mythology isn’t like Greek and Roman where one god has a single role
@iradagrey
@iradagrey 4 жыл бұрын
Ryan Goodman I mean if you wanna be technical, they’re all War Gods, but only due to the Vikings being a War like people. In Sparta Aphrodite was also depicted as a war Goddess. But that’s kind of a cop out. Tyr was THE God of War. What set Tyr apart was his ability to avoid war when possible. When Viking Holds has issues with neighbors or rivals, they’d typically seek out peaceful solutions before resorting to War, as Per Tyr’s teachings. Odin was never considered the God of War amongst the Vikings. Also most cultural Gods do have dual meanings, so not sure why you think their all Singular. Athena was the Goddess of Wisdom and War. Poseidon was God of the Seas and Father of Horses. The Morrigan was a Goddess of War and Death and Fate (Celtic-Irish).
@ryangoodman5371
@ryangoodman5371 4 жыл бұрын
Zedd Smith fair enough. Odin was the god of wisdom, healing, death, royalty, the gallows, knowledge, war, battle, victory, sorcery, poetry, frenzy, and the runic alphabet. Tyr was indeed the main god of war but Odin was still considered one. Not every Norse god was a god of war either

No he wasn’t - stop spreading lies. You know very well that you have no valid, credible sources to back up that claim - its merely a highly norwegicentric theory. Nothing more. In reality his place of birth/origin will most likely forever be a mystery. And yet you speak as if its the truth/fact. The very definition of misinformation. Stop lying. - And yes I'm a Dane, if that wasn’t obvious by my strong disagreement with your unfounded, false claim.

It was not mentioned here but Ivar the Boneless, was, of course, King of Dublin until his death in Dublin in 873. Another viking Dubliner worth a mention is Olaf Guthfrithson, also King of Dublin, who led one of to the largest ever naval assaults on England with possibly up to 600 longships taking part. He, along with his Scottish allies, lost the battle in Buranburh(not sure if that is correct spelling?) but he did eventually become king of Northumbria.

@@slidred5643 Aye, we're fairly certain some Ragnar Lothbrok did exist, since his sons are historical figures. But it's extremely doubtful he did everything that's attributed to him. We do know that *a* Ragnar raided England in the 10th century, *a* Ragnar fathered Bjorn Ironside, Ivar the Boneless, Sugurd Snake-in-the-Eye, Ubba and Halfdan, *a* Ragnar besieged Paris in 845, and probably this last Ragnar might have been killed in Northumbria at the hands of king Aella. We do not know if they were the same person, whether or not they actually died the way Lothbrok died in the sagas, when exactly they lived barring the year 845. But we are fairly sure that the Ragnar we've all heard about is a legendary figure of combined Viking leaders at the time, with king Horik I being a good candidate for one of the constituents, funnily enough.

The first Viking he talks about Harald Hardrada, during the Battle of Stamford Bridge a little excerpt from the wiki "The English advance was then delayed by the need to pass through the choke-point presented by the bridge itself. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle has it that a giant Norse axeman (possibly armed with a Dane Axe) blocked the narrow crossing and single-handedly held up the entire English army. The story is that this axeman cut down up to 40 Englishmen and was defeated only when an English soldier floated under the bridge in a half-barrel and thrust his spear through the planks in the bridge, mortally wounding the axeman."

This is what happens when people believe everything they read on Wikipedia. You all need to learn how to do real research. News flash:..... THERE WAS NO BRIDGE . The Battle of Stamford Bridge is so named because of a corruption over time of the Olde English word for "ford". The river is so shallow at that point that you can easily walk across it. Why would anyone take the considerable effort to build a bridge in the middle of a field, where there was no town or major road, to cross a river that came up to their knees? Why would anyone fight to get across a bridge when they could walk right across the river past it? There is NO ARCHAEOLOGICAL OR HISTORICAL EVIDENCE of a bridge ever existing there, beyond this single account of the Viking which didn't appear until much later. Pure propaganda and/or urban legend.

One Viking you should have added to this is Raud Den Rame (Rauðr Inn Rammi), he was a fearsome Viking chieftain who lived in a place in Norway called Saltstraumen (Saltstream), which is known today as tourist attraction because it is one of the worlds strongest maelstroms hotspots. During the Viking Age, Raud was believed to not only be a fearsome warrior, but also a powerful shaman. Since ships and men who came in to attack him usually ended up getting crushed and drowned by the powerful maelstrom in Saltstraumen, which at the time was believed to have been summoned by Raud himself. When the Viking King, Olav Tryggvason (now Christian) wanted to convert Raud, he refused. When failing to convert him to Christianity, he decided to kill him instead. He died by having a snake forced down his throat, and the snake would go berserk and eat him up from the inside.. This was a symbolic death by the hands of King Tryggvason, because Raud had a very nice longboat with a dragon head in the front, and a curled tail in the back, fittingly named Ormen. (The Worm/The Snake). After King Tryggvason killed Raud, he took the ship because it was much nicer than his own ship, this ship also was used later by King Tryggvason as a model for his new ship, Ormen Lange. (The long Worm/The long Snake). Raud den Rame was one of the most fearsome chieftains among the Hålogaland Vikings, which were very feared and brutal Vikings living in a specific area of northern Norway. (Basicly the die hard berserker vikings pictured in media today.)

For those wanting to see something about Ragnars sons revenge on England watch the show The Last Kingdom. It should still be on Netflix. It follows the great pagan army as it ravages England and the last English kingdom left, Wessex led by Alfred the great trying to stop them. Alfred would go on to unite the kingdoms and form England The main character is an Anglo son of an alderman whose father is killed in battle and he's taken in and raised as a Viking. His adopted Viking father is killed by another Viking in order to steal his adopted sister to make her his bride and he tries to go home but learns his uncle wants to kill him and be alderman himself. He flees south to Wessex and eventually swears fealty to Alfred so he can work his way up to get revenge on the people who killed his adopted father and eventually retake his birthright It's pretty unbiased with good and bad guys on either side. Not glorified. Alfred isn't made out to be some super human figure of strength and righteousness It also goes over the whole Christian vs pagan stuff pretty well Even though the main character is by birth an Anglo and was baptized his identity is that of his adopted family of the Norse and pagans. Lots of side switching and fighting adopted brother against adopted brother

The issue here is that many, many of the Norse gods are somehow linked to war, but the two gods we usually think of when we hear the word 'war' tends to be Odin and Frey, as they are those who pick out the fallen dead after the battle.

Freya, Frey's sister chooses half of the slain warriors for her own, Freya is the nordic goddess of war, there is no male god of war. good choices! For this video, I would have thought of Harald "Finehair", who was allegedly the first king of all Norway, and also Svend I and Cnut The Great, who played an important role in the late stages of the viking era. Cheers mate!

@@LordAloui right. So based on Michael Hirst's story, meaning, based on fiction. No one knows for sure why Ivar had his name. If you knew much Viking history, you'd know there are multiple theories as to the origin of his name. He *may* have been disabled, as is depicted in the show, but there are multiple other plausible theories suggesting otherwise. Nor was the Great Heathen Army quantifiably "the greatest Viking army" - which is a statement which cannot be quantified. Nor was Ivar the Great Heathen Army's only leader, but one of many. When there's more to discuss beyond the arguments at play in "Vikings", which isn't a historically accurate depiction of history by any means, maybe there will be some merit in the argument, but as I said, there is no really genuine metric at work here.
