Ignoring people when you‘re walking past them is very common in cities in my experience. In rural areas you‘re almost obliged to greet people, because otherwise your parents/grandparents are being informed of your bad manners. In Germany people in small villages most likely know which family you belong to🙈

Also kinda depends on the location. On a busy street you can get away with not greeting people but if it's a lonely road and there is nobody else but you and this other person you better greet them.

@@chrissi7560 I had the exact same experience, I grew up in a rural area and it took me a long time to get used to not greeting people in the city. Now I experience some kind of reverse culture shock when I’m in a rural area. When somebody greets me in the street, I immediately think: “What does this person want? Are they asking for money or for my signature?” then after a second I remember and greet them back.

Not being critical but yet again Antoinette the things you mention are not just typical German but European. In England we always wear slippers in the house, we would never great everyone we meet on the street in a town but, as in Germany, great people in rural areas or when out walking in the woods etc. The cooked meal time varies from family to family depending on their situation and I find that is the same here in Germany. Here in North Germany nearly every one I know drinks still water ( back in the 80s this was virtually unknown but not now) and the Kindergarten I work in offers tap water to the children as well as bottled sparkling water and the majority take tap water. I do however agree with you on the socks in sandals, I never saw that before moving here!!

The underlying issue with ignoring people is that, especially in more urbanized areas people that approach you are automatically associated with someone who wants to sell you something or someone asking for money. Unfortunately this happens quite often so you just learn to ignore people as a form of self-defense

I would say that saying hello on the streets is something where you have to differentiate between countryside and city. I grew up on the countryside and I was taught to say hello whenever I pass a person. It always distresses me when someone doesn't say hello :D but in the cities it's not so common to do that. It's way too anonymous and crowded there

Great reasons - as an American I've always done this, just never with black socks. House shoes actually make complete sense to me after my (german) city dwelling friend explained the whole logical thing of that, not only does it protect your feet from injury but also keeps the "outside" dirt from being trampled around your whole home. Now it has become a habit for me (along with airing my flat, turning back the duvet, not being loud on Sundays etc and everyone assumes it means I'm a german who speaks good english which I find quite amusing.

German tap water has in many regions a high level of calcium. As drinkable as it may be, it just doesn't taste very refreshing. Not pure in a glass, not in coffee, not in tea. It's what we call "hard water". And the difference to "soft water" is distinct. Sparkling water on the other hand usually has this light sweetness to it which I expect from "sweetwater", which is "fresh water" in English.

I am Norwegian and I do smile and say hello, in my more rural neighborhood I even waves a hi with my crutches 🤣 I do the same if I see people I know in town, the wave with the crutches that be, but I still give a smile and a hi to very many in town too. I also shout out “thanks for the trip” to the bus driver when going of back, even in a very full bus. This is NOT normal, but I think it is nice to say thank you, and the bus drivers have a hard work, so at least I could give them some appreciation. I had an old man thanking me in my teens for talking with him on the library. For me it was nothing special, I try to be polite and I really love older people, I have always done, and he was a very nice man. That thank you change me. It is 20+ years since then, but if I meet someone on my hiking that wants to talk and I can cash a later bus (they mostly go’s every half hour in the weekend, sometimes more frequently, always more often in the weekdays, so it is real not an issue) I do that. I know how good it can feel that someone gives a hi or a little talk. I have worked in nursing home for elderly for 13 years, so I really love the elderly, even though I don’t work now. Many I meet on my trips are elderly, since I often goes on weekdays, or early in the weekends. So many local waves at me, even in the cars, so I just waves back, even though I don’t always know who it is 😂😂 You get a little local fame if you use crutches for 4 years, and goes on long walks and hikes every day, in every kind of weather. I think it is nice of you, and sweet that your boy is caching up 😍 We drink tap water here in Norway, some use house shoes, mostly in the winter (we never wear our outside shoes inside), some wear socks in there sandals, but that is mostly seen as a joke, and we have 4 meals in Norway: breakfast: bread, porridge or yoghurt, lunch: mostly bread at work/school (there are some changes going on here, but most kids need to have lunch with them at school, and that is a cold one), dinner is often at 4-5pm, and is hot, and we have evening meal, that is more like breakfast, bread or maybe some leftovers, some easy. Thank you for sharing! Love from Johanne, Norway

The kindergarten my son is going to don't use sparkling water - they use tab water. My son always drinks tab water (or half tab water, half juice) at home - he literally hates sparkling water. I like to drink tab water or 'Stilles Wasser' as well. But sometimes I also like to drink little sparkling water (Glashäger sells one under the name 'sanft' - gently/smoothly). As a german, I don't like these unfriendly, not greeting behavior too. We live in a small city in the northeastern part of Germany, so it is a more rural area here. There are a few moms at my son's kindergarten, who can't get their mouth open for a little reply. But luckily the most of the parents are responding. Lovely channel btw :-)

The point of wearing socks not only in sandals but in every kind of shoes is - first of all its much more hygienic. But the main reason for me is that my feet get sweaty and slippery in Sandals without socks and i absolutely hate that feeling - and sometimes i even get blisters on my feet when i dont wear socks. I can't remember the last time I drank sparkly water or Apfelschorle and I'm having my biggest meal in the evening for at least 15 years. Goes to show that German culture hasn't changed everywhere, it seems. This socks in sandals thing is something old people do, right? I would be really surprised to see it on anyone below the age of 40.

Yes, there is a reason for socks and sandals: normally when you leave the house early in the morning it is still cold outside, so you should wear closed shoes, but from about 10 - 11 o'clock it begin to heat up. As you will not have your feet cooked by noon, you leave the house with socks and sandals and by the time it gets to hot you just quit your socks. So this is the theorie. Practically the youth today plainly evoid wearing socks in the sandals, prefering frozen feet or perhaps they wear the sandals firstly in the bag and then later on switch shoes (what I do). But the over 45ish still cling with the bad habit of socks and sandals, as they where brought up.

I'm one of the Germans who don't like plain water. I use tap water and carbonise it with a soda stream. I also wear slippers( Birkenstocks) inside to not get my white carpet dirty with my outside shoes ( due to age and arthritis I'm not comfortable with walking barefoot or in just socks. I HATE the looks of socks in sandals, lol, and tend to associate that look with a certain kind of people - don't know why though. Walking with your eyes open to people passing by and give them at least a smile or a 'hello' is the thing we do here in my little village all the time. Even teenagers do it when cycling by my house and see me in the front yard. It's different in bigger cities I think.

I am German but I am not your typical German. I do own Hausschuh, but I usually just put them on when it is really cold and I am stepping out of bed to walk to the bathroom or something. In summer I walk around barefoot. I hardly ever drink sparkling water as we live on the very top floor of our building and I don't want to carry the bottles upstairs all the time. We have really great icy cool tap water and I much prefer that. Even in Schorle. I call it "Stille Schorle" . My kid doesn't like fizzy drinks. We sometimes cook for lunch, but mostly simple stuff. Most of the hot meals, we do eat for dinner, as the whole family is at home. We can cook together and it is much more relaxed that way... I would never wear socks in sandals...but in Hausschuh. But I sometimes use my Hausschuh in summer to step out of the apartment for a few minutes as you can slip them on and off much easier. They are the rubbery crocs kind. I basically only put shoes on, if I want to protect my feet from dirt, painful walking ground or cold. I also think I am a little more approachable than the average German person and find myself talking to strangers that look lost or in need of assistance somehow. I think that is something everyone should do! I try not to get into everybody's business but I am aware of my surroundings!

When shoes are to warm you wear sandals. Socks, to protect your feed, issues with sweating, leather / plastic irritating the skin wathever. There are different reasons possible It may sound strange but my feet swill sweat anyway. When I wear no socks, the sweat will be in the sandals on the leather / plastic of the shoes. Then you walk the whole time in this wet sweaty sandals, you have no grip to the shoe, it will irritate the skin, you will get blisters and so on. It is much more comfortable to walk with socks on your feet. And I really don't care if it looks aesthetic. Many people wear stuff that looks aweful, ludicrous or not suited for their age and nobody asks me for my opinion and I don't complain at them about their outfit.

I wasn't a grungy person, but it was comfy. And I love, love wearing my birkenstocks in the house! They keep my feet from getting sore if I'm standing in the kitchen or cleaning. I still wear them after moving back to the states, so it's a German habit that I'm not letting go of.

I'm German and these are my answers: 1. sparkling water: I don't actually like it, I always go for still water and at home I drink it from the tab. :) 2. ignoring strangers: I come from a small village and it's totally normal there to greet anyone you come across. But I now live in a bigger city so I no longer do this. 3. having the main meal in the daytime: I often have my breakfast very late in the day (at 11 or 12) so I don't really have lunch at all. Or I guess I don't have breakfast :D In the evening I then have my big meal of the day. 4. wearing socks and sandals together: So I have a pair of Birkenstock sandals which I like to wear as regular shoes when I go out. But I also wear them when I just quickly go to take the trash out etc. because they are so easy to just slip on. Since I often wear socks when I'm inside it does happen that I wear socks and sandals to take the trash out etc. :) But I wouldn't wear it like that in public 5. wearing slippers inside: I don't own any slippers, I just wear socks or in summer I sometimes go barefoot.

I`m German and a really love my Hausschuhe ;-). I even know some families, that have a bunch of houseshoes in common sizes for guests. I agree that the sandals-and-sock-thing is an absolutely no-go. It's so ridiculous but my daughters (17 + 22) also told me that it's becoming kind of trendy (we were all shocked ;-) ). Perhaps people do it because of blisters? Ignoring people you pass by is "mal so - mal so". I often walk the dog and it is very common to greet people you meet during the walk. I also love sparkeling drinks - in my opinion you still stay thirsty if you drink sth not-sparkeling - but my sister thinks just the other way round. I know a lot of people who like "stilles Wasser". At home we use a soda stream with tap water which is very tasty in our region. We have our warm meal in the evening because every family member is at home then. During the weekend we always sleep very long and have a "gutes Frühstück" at lunch time and cook in the evening.

Dear Antoinette, as a German, I always wore socks in my sandals and esp. sandals with straps because I always developed blisters after only a short while above my heel and across the basis of my toes. This only changed after my pregnancy. I don't get cold feet anymore and hardly any blisters. And I don't wear houseshoes, because we have floor-heating. The floor is that cosy and warm in wintertime, I only wear socks. And in summer I'm barefoot at home. I dislike sparkling water on its own. It's okay when mixed with fruit juices. The only brand of sparkling water I can tolerate is a famous and rather expensive Italian. I prefer non-sparkling water. t I'm guilty of ignoring people I don't know, but I always answer a greeting or a nod. Cooking is my nemesis. And as I have to care for my widowed father-in-law I'm forced to cook for lunch. I'd go for cold meals only if I could. CU twinmama

When I feel sick in winter or something like that, I prefer thick socks at home. Other than that, I am barefoot at home almost all of the time. Main meal at lunch. That depends on the situation. When I'm off duty, then yes, weekends my husband and I have our main meal in the evening. I do greet people in the house, but on the street not that often because I live in a big city. I just remembered another German habit that I could never get my head around. During my first couple of years in Germany, as a Gastarbeiter, I worked for a large car company in Cologne. The lunchtimes were fantastic and heavily subsided to deter workers from leaving during the 30 minute lunch break. We got a variety of wholesome meals for 90 Pfennige each. It was Eintopf, or Kasseler mit Kartoffelklößen, or Hähnchenschenkel. But on hot days in the summer we got "Kaltschale" aka kalte Schale, which I hated. Dunno whether this is a German thing, but I need something more substantial for lunch!

Lol. My daughter judges people on whether or not someone says hello. My daughter actually despises people who dont say hello. She's 2.5 and she'll say Arschloch loud enough for them to hear 🤦‍♀️. My wonderful husband taught her that word and I have to deal with the repercussions. If you're in Basel Switzerland you better say hello to my daughter.

I don‘t live in Germany but in Austria it is considered really rude to not say „hello“ when you walk past or meet someone on the street. (not in big cities, but in towns and villages). When I was a kid people would even tell your parents if you didn‘t greet them and they would also gossip about other people‘s bad- mannered kids 😅

zum Thema "Socken und Sandalen": Ich auch. Immer! Schließlich will ich mich doch primär wohlfühlen.

I have lived in big cities, Hamburg, Munich, as well as in a small village of just 200 people. In cities you don't greet, in villages you do, it's as simple as that. Personally I prefer not to talk to anyone as I'm quite introverted and like to keep to myself, but I do respect the expected manners in rural areas. The bigger the city the more it seems awkward to greet strangers, which makes sense since you can't greet thousands of people every day. Currently I'm living in Munich and you know what, if I meet an old lady in my street and we're alone, I will greet her anyway to give her a good feeling; they seem to appreciate it, probably because they remember old times when things were different.

LoL I'm very German and I don't do most of these things either. Hate Hausschuhe, I just prefer being barefoot in the house; hardly ever drink sparkling water; socks in sandals is a big no no, I think that goes without saying 😂 but many people of the older generation still do that; I prefer having my main meal at lunchtime and used to when I was a kid, but unfortunately my schedule doesn't allow it anymore; but I'm guilty of the not saying hello thing, but I'm from Hamburg so I feel like that kinda counts as an excuse haha. But in the countryside it's definitely a bit more common to say hello to random people on the street :)

Other than fashion, why not socks and sandals? It´s a little lighter and better ventilated then socks in closed shoes and there is no risk of sunburn on for the feet and it you don´t get cold feet, as soon as the weather changes slightly. Personally, I very rarely wear sandals anyways, but I can totally see the point, why it might be favourable to combine sandals with socks, depending on the weather conditons.

After 20 years in Germany my english spouse picked up the water habit - all 4 children drink sparkling water. )btw - Apfelschorle is better done yourself - you can put less juice into it, make t healthier (ups - so german), don't like socks in sandals (but is USED to be a thing when I was small in the 70/80 - Skirt, long stockings to the knee and sandals...feet where thought od a gross. and we do not own house shoes, unless school demands it. And we eat hot whenever. Don't like Abendbrot as I don't eat bread anymore. Ignoring people is not meant as rude. It is just that you intrude into their personal time/space/headspace. I do not greet strangers, I might smile. But I chat it the dogs meet, or in the supermarket. Offer dog bags, tissues. Just different upbringing. I do greet back though.

Here I am explaining why I used to wear sandals with socks 😁 My hands and feet are cold all the time, even when it's summer. It may be hot as hell outside but inside the building I may have cold feet. When I was a student I used to wear sandals with socks inside, and when I went outside I just took them off. Also, my toes are quite long and sandals were really comfortable. Why not to bear when I have cold feet? Idk. I never bear neither cold feet nor being hungry/thirsty, whatever. When I go outside when it's hot and I know I get back late, I take a hoodie for the evening in my bag. As well as water. Now I don't wear sandals with socks cuz I realized if I wear summer type of sneakers, I don't even need to take my socks off 😁 Interesting to read other people answers.

The best compromise is to have a main meal at lunch and a main meal in the evening ;) When I'm jogging in the farm fields during the day, I usually say hello to the people I pass, and more than half of them return the greeting. I guess someone in the middle of nowhere and looking like he is near death isn't much of a threat. Either barefoot or in socks in the house ... scandalises the friends and family.

What i do is: I fill water from the water tap into my water glass and drink it. What water selling companies do is: they fill water from the water tap into bottles, carry the bottles with heavy trucks throughout the country to the grocery stores and sell it for a big amount of money and line their pockets nicely. To me it makes no sense to buy water from the water tap in bottles, produce a lot of plastic waste, spend much money and have at least the same as I can have from my own water tap. Be assured, the water quality is fine, you can drink it without any concerns. I once made an insurance survey in such a company which fill water in bottles. Be assured they DO fill water from the water tap in the bottles.

and that is called "table water" (Tafelwasser). Mineral water is taken from a natural source. Some habe natural gas, some are gassed up. It is certainly better to use tap water or mineral water from a near-by water producer than, e.g. some French still water like Volvic or Perrier.

I would not confuse respectful acknowledgement and leaving them their privacy by not "talking" to them with "ignoring". There is a distinct difference. Ignoring means that you will act as if they don't exist even if they say "hello" to you. Not saying "hello" to everybody just means that you leave them in peace, respect their privacy and leave them to their own thoughts. Many Germans eat a warm meal in the evening, especially those who work. Socks in sandals, I am always confused about this, as I have barely seen anyone do it. But maybe I am just not in places where it's done. Hausschuhe ... I am almost 60, never head Hausschuhe and doubt I ever will. I am not sure if that is really so common, as I don't know this from any of my relatives or friends. Maybe it's something older generations do (I am realizinfg the irony, as I now belong to the older generation - I guess I mean even older than me) :-)
@grandmak.

I'm not sure about that. Nobody had 'Hausschuhe' back in the days of my parents or grandparents and it was considered very offensive to make your guests take their shoes off ( I still don't do that). I first experienced that habit in Scandinavia about 30 years ago. I always thought it had to do with the growing hygiene awareness in homes with babies crawling on the floors but I may be wrong.

Wearing slippers is not only german, I guess it's at least european (don't know about the US or Asia). In every country I know - Hungary, Romania, UK, France, Germany - people are wearing slippers, or in some cases shoes/sandals at home. This might depend among other things also on the climate. I personally would find it awkward to be barefoot inside and then having to take some shoes or slippers every time I need to go to the basement (AKA cellar) or the mail box or bring out the waste or such. Plus it would be too cold most of the year to walk barefoot. And we have the main meal in the evening since ca. 35 years, we're keeping this habit even now, as pensioneers. When we were employees, we both came home somewhere in the afternoon, so there was no possibility at all to have the main meal at noon.

I have been living here 20+ years and I alternate between tap water and Sprudel. Each has its spot in my life. In my Ortsteil, we greet everyone we pass. However when downtown in the city, I can’t possibly greet everyone! However, if someone makes eye contact, holds a door... I always/greet acknowledge the person. Naja, I have two teenage boys. We eat full, huge meals always including breakfast. So I cook twice a day. But my boys (including my husband) all help cook and clean-up. Socks and sandals! 😂 No, just no! Never! If you need socks, you should not have sandals on. I grew up with Italian parents and they always wore Hausschuhe. I never did. Either just socks or barefoot. My kids hate Hausschuhe as well even though my German husband tries to convince them.

As a German I have to say, that I can't exactly understand why I should greet a random person I have never met and will probably not meet ever again, just because he or she walks past me on the street. I mean if I'd meet you and you would say hello and smile at me, I would greet back but after that I would wonder why a complete stranger is greeting me out of nowhere. And I would probably ask myself if we've met before and I just forgot about it.

I'm a german who definitely wears socks in sandals because I get blisters on my feet every time I don't wear socks.

And I also think it's a little bit too embarrassing. Hope it helped ;)

The bottle you showed will not really be fully recycled. You can Google about the topic if environment and climate is important to you (I guess so, because you pointed out that it could be recycled). There is a lot of confusion about it, because there are "Mehrweg" and "Einweg" bottles. People often think it is environmental friendly to buy these bottles because you pay "Pfand" and it's true that there is something like "recycling", but it is still huge waste of resources. There are other PET bottles which are truly recycled & resused (Mehrweg bottle).
