Here in Italy we have the name Andrea, (pronounced as in German) but it's a male name. The feminine (very seldom used) is Andreina. We also have Laura, pronounced as in german but the r is not guttural.

I also met young people here in germany (skin heads) which told me that foreigners had stolen their parents' jobs (which was BS by the way). Others told me about very bad experiences with immigrants/refugees who beaten them up and bullied them at school. I even had a very heated conversation with a german lady who got robbed and beaten up by a foreign lookin man. Its very hard to have a objective conversation with people about how their views are racist if they themselves have had bad experiences with “foreigners” or if they were influenced by their parents. In most cases i think some people are just afraid that others can come and live here.. so their "club" of being german isnt as exclusive as it seemed. XD

But do you actually know that "diarrhea" is Greek and also literally means kind of the same as "Durchfall" in German? Diarrhea literally means "flow through".

Lol now i understand my Oma's stories of people talking shit and her clapping back at them. My oma LOVED obnoxiously colorful clothes (it was always a rainbow in her closet qnd in fact most of her clothes were a raunbow on their own) and other things that this list says not to wear (though she was definitely pro practical footwear) She had so many stories of people loudly talking shit in German thinking that she was foreign and having her respond in her mother tongue (she was originally from wilhelmshaven) and their shock that she had a recognisable northern german accent shocked them. Better yet she was a german school teacher so she would correct their grammar too before she walked off.

Hi Antoinette! Thank you for sharing all your experiences - so very interesting and funny! In terms of wet hair, though, or eating everything that's on your plate, I get the impression this may be very typical to the community or region you are living in. Here in Berlin, nobody even looks at you nor are people puzzled or even irritated by that. Maybe you won't to come her and visit. In summer, everyone is perfectly okay with children playing barefoot in the sand or on the playground or in parks or public swimming pools. 😊

Hi, I just stumbled upon this video, I am German but quite familiar with English speaking countries. Listening to your different points, I just thought that maybe one presupposes the other. Eg. The fact that Germans don’t mind telling you off/ giving their opinion on certain personal matters (like with letting your child be barefoot). If we interpret this as looking out for each other (which it may not be the case all the time, but even if it’s judgemental my point still makes sense), it would explain why Germany has less strict eg. on alcohol. At the pool for example, if parents would get wasted there would definitely be people telling them off, maybe even taking care of the child or call authorities.

My son (12 years old) faces with racism, discrimination and prejudices by the teachers here in Germany. He's good in English, Math and German, but not in Music and Philosophy. The teacher said that he might not be able to continue "Gymnasium" which is awful.

Maybe your littlest could start riding a Laufrad? He probably won't be able to go as fast as you go on your bikes, but he will exert himself and it will be a good opportunity to learn balancing and steering before actually needing to pedal, which can be daunting to learn.

I am German and have gone through the entire German school system. I always hated it from the 5th to the 13th grade. I was also a blatant school refuser at times (I pretended to be ill). I took a few breaks, for example after the 10th grade, to do other things, in my case the army. But I had to go back to school to get my diplomas to do other things. Things that bothered me the most, from my student perspective. 1. the subjectivity of the teachers and their inability to recognize changes in performance. For example, when I did badly in biology in 7th grade, it was almost impossible for me to get away from the bad grade up to and including 10th grade, because the teacher simply saved me as bad. And thats not a single case. Because of this subjectivity, my goal at another school from the 11th grade onwards was not primarily that I was good, but that the teachers thought I was good. And that worked straight away. Making an effort in the first quarter of year 11 was enough to get consistently good grades until year 13. 2. oral grades are unfair. 3. the school subjects are too linear. I would have liked much more choice. 4. School classes are too big (I know that this has changed to some extent) 5. Schools are overstretched. Too few teachers. For example, I was at a school where 5 teachers were on long-term sick leave (for years). There are no replacements for these teachers because they are only sick and will come back. This means that all the other teachers have to cover for them, in addition to the normal absences. Another thing that didn't concern me, but that I have often heard, is that the differences between the federal states are too great. So when you move, there are incredible problems. In principle, there are 16 more or less different school systems in Germany. I can't speak to the perspective of a parent, but I can imagine that many things there are very frustrating. All the best to you and your children :)
