Most footballers accept that the combination of relentless training, the right attitude and natural talent is the only way to the top. Some, however, believe skills are all you need. We look at five players with unbelievable ability who ruined their careers with a lousy attitude to training. And note, our definition of ‘ruined’ includes winning the Ballon d’Or!

Exactly. Sometimes the problem is that a player peaks too soon. Ronaldinho won everything worth winning in football by an early age so I guess he kinda lost the motivation to keep going and decided to just party instead. He had a successful career by all measures but when your heart is no longer in something, it doesn't really matter how good at it you are, you are bound to underperform.

this just makes me respect messi and ronaldo even more because in ronaldo's case he is known for training like a machine. he worked so hard to perfect his skills. in messi's case people regard him as "god-gifted" but often forget that without the hard work and determination in training he won't have reached the level of where he is today.

Those who say Messi is better than Ronaldo, Ok lets say Ronaldo is bad. But he plays just as good if no better than Messi which is reality. The summary is, if Ronaldo can engineer himself to be as good as Messi, isn't Ronaldo the better role model and better person than Messi? Why should i look up to Messi (a god given talent), when you and me and everyone can use Ronaldo's ethics to be just as good at anything we want to be good at? In this case Ronaldo worked hard to be the best because he was not that good in the first place? 🤪

You could say Dinho would be the GOAT if he took his career serious or had a sharp decline from his peak, but you can't say he ruined his career. Ruining a career would be players with undisputed, high ceilings but never achieved the ultimate peaks in the sport because of their own lack of dedication. How could Dinho ruin his career if he won all the most difficult trophies there were available for him to win? Ballon D'or WC Confederations Copa America Champions League Libertadores Spanish Champion Italian Champion Name any other player with all of these. putting Riquelme on a list of ruined careers is disrespectful on so many levels. The only real argument there is "he didn't do well in Barça and he wasn't really liked in Villareal despite playing really good football". Doesn't matter. If we are gonna compare trophies, Xavi & iniesta, Pele is up there. There is a reason maradona's name is mentioned in the same breath as Pele despite only winning it once. What makes Messi or Ronaldo a goat, is that both shown consistency & extreme professionalism till the end of their careers. How often do you see 34 or 36 year olds still performing for accolades & at elite level competition as a first team player? I think they can still go on to play till 38 or 40. Its an incredible achievement along with Zlatan, who is at AC MIlan at 39. This are what legends are made of.

True. I don't even think prime Steven Gerrard would be signed by Klopp since he was a little too lazy defensively and, not selfish, but over reliant on needing to be the one distributing the ball offensively that it would not work for Gegenpressing football. Klopp has a certain type that others undervalue and they become amazing when paired together. However there are a lot more football coaches coming through that share Klopp's philosophy so now it is a lot harder and more expensive to sign the type of players that fit.

Mourinho was telling about the laziness of Hazard something like 10 years ago, many people thought it was just Mourinho that was speaking bad about another guy. Mourinho will only say shit about you if you don't give all for the team, he never told shit about the old Chelsea team, in fact it was the opposite, he always defended them (the first time he went there). Cause Lampard, Terry, Carvalho, Drogba and all the other guys were thinking about the team first and winning. Nowadays everyone criticize him because he doesn't manage to get the best of his players, but the truth is the players now just think about what they want, not what the team needs, and they rarely are thankful. Most of them just care about social media, money. That's why it's hard to get the best of guys like this. Pogba never gives everything on the pitch, he does efforts only when he wants to (and that's not that often). Many players could be way better and improve than what they are, like Alli in Tottenham. Now watch what's happening with Hazard, Mourinho was already telling that he wasn't very motivated as he should have been.
