In my case (married for 37 years) it was the opposite. He would tell me that he didn’t need to hear my compliments. I’d tell him anyway. He also never gave me any directly. My friends would tell me that he had compliments about me. Why would a man not want to compliment his wife? I hear the compliment from many other people, even children, but never from him.

yeah now the woman is in the competing role, which is masculine "give a compliment that is not common, that stands out" what about giving a genuine appreciating comment? what are you going to say that noone has said before? now you're overthinking and in your head and competing and in your masculine...yeah better not
