My husband and I have always lived as if we only had one income. Our friends and family never understood why we were the way we were. Now we are in our mid fifties, I am retired, we have no bills, our mortgage is paid off and we are able to help our family when needed. 😉 I won’t be changing a thing and plan to continue living like this!!

My husband and I told our large family...no gifts this year....they are all adults-our grandchildren are all almost adults...we will buy for the great grandsons...but we all help eachother out thru the year...we will all get together and have Christmas dinner...but theres no reason for them to buy gifts when really nobody needs anything at all🙂

I'm a professional chef so I rarely eat out or get takeout, unless a friend invites me to their place for free. I can cook whatever I want at home and have more control over the ingredients and quality of the food. I splurge and get takeout at the most once every few months. Once you know how to cook and have the right tools, it's more satisfying and way cheaper to make it yourself and eat at home.

I eat at home always and bring lunch, and coffee. I shop at 2nd hand stores, reporpose, make due just can't make ends meet! Food and utilities and a roof over my head are so hard.

I have found that over gifting also puts extra stress on others to return a gift of equal or greater value when they really can not afford to do so. Instead of encouraging spending we now do a simple gift exchange, sometimes with things we make ourselves, and than enjoy a beautiful meal together where everyone brings some kind of dish. So much more relaxing. It also keeps our focus on why we actually celebrate. Thanks for all your ideas.

I do the same thing with wrapping paper, ribbons, bows, cards, decorations, etc. To make sure I don't buy too much, I decided that I have to love whatever it is I'm buying and also that I need it for next year. For instance, some years I buy a lot of wrapping paper and then don't buy any for the next year or two even if I see some I love. At this point, I don't buy many decorations since I already have enough.

Eating out is an absolute KILLER! The average household spends $300 a month on it. That said, I kind of love it. To do it on the cheap my wife and I order appy's instead of mains and we often skip the expensive drinks and no alcohol! I can't completely say no but we can really cut down on the costs! Kate, I'd love to partner with you to help parents raise kids that NEVER go into debt! Could I touch base with you via email?

I'm amazed what people spend on eating out. I hate to eat out! I don't know who coughed or sneezed while prepping my food, they could even intentionally spit in it! I know how many times I wash my hands while I'm cooking. Guess maybe I'm paranoid!

Over-gifting is a form of people-pleasing and “if I give you this gift will you love me / like me !” Over-gifting is the external manifestation of inadequacy. Painful realization but true. Once you are aware of feeling inadequate- the behavior around that will change - to a much better …healthier way of gift giving.

I WAS an over gifter. Christmas of 2017 I ended the holiday about $600 in EZ pay debt, QVC and HSN! I started my gift savings and haven’t had gift debt since. Feels so much better. My Christmas gifts are all bought, not wrapped yet lol.

I would add - Try doing something different out of the traditional box and/or start a new tradition. Thankfully my daughter had taken over the holiday meals at their home several years ago. The other year, we discussed the wisdom of having a large meal both at Thanksgiving and also at Christmas. We decided to have the big holiday meal on Thanksgiving, and then just have snack/finger foods available during the day on Christmas. We've done this twice with total success. The girls are still young enough to just want to play with their new toys from Santa more than enduring another big, fancy sit down dinner. It's a much more enjoyable and relaxed day for everyone and there's more than enough food to snack on during the day. A total win-win all around!

For the present wrapping. My husband and I decided to start using cloth drawstring bags for gifts. Its not as pretty as the paper, but we buy them once and can reuse them every year from now on. I love Emmie and Paul! I actually found you through their channel. My husband and I don't eat out more than once a month, honestly. It helps in this regard that I am vegan and there haven't been a lot of choices for me out there. How do I keep on track during the holidays? I make a lot of the things we give as gifts, including the Christmas cards, which I only mail to those people who don't live close enough to hand them to. By "make" I don't just mean cooking or baking, I can, knit, crochet, sew, grow and do various paper crafts and mixed media. These are things I can be working on all year so I'm not spending money on supplies all at once.

We have done potluck meals for ages for all holidays. A few years back my family started doing Christmas Eve brunch instead of a dinner. We usually do some kind of breakfast casserole, fruit, French toast or pancakes and of course Christmas cookies because, you know, Christmas😂 Much more economical and it’s nice that those who travel a ways can head home earlier and prepare for Christmas Day. On Christmas Day, we do a lunch potluck with my husband’s side of the family. Soups are the main dish along with salads, rolls, snacky foods and, of course, cookies! We try to keep it simple, but always delicious😊

One frugal thing I do for gift giving, I decide early in the year how much I am going to spend for birthdays and Christmas - I save up all year long. I don't stray too much from the plan because I have already decided how much to spend. Somehow that is freeing to know the spending boundaries. Very smart idea. I do this as well, but I start shopping around January and continue throughout the year. I usually get all of my gifts at 75% or more marked down. Make sure you write down what you get and where you placed it so when it’s time to wrap those gifts you won’t forget them. I’m usually finished with all of my gifts by October and can stay out of the hustle and bustle during the holidays. It’s not as safe to shop during Christmas time. Good luck and stay safe

I rarely eat out but this month I have extra birthdays in my family and friend group. So this is the time of year that I spend more on eating out. I do intend to plan my holiday baking better than in years past. It is so hard to see ALL THE RECIPES and not want to do it all, but post holiday food hangover is real for me. I would prefer a much simpler offering, for my budget and my tummy. I will make one or two of the staples (7 layer cookies and peppermint bark) and add one or two others. Then I will STOP!!! Thanks for your enthusiastic video. You are a doll (By the way, I am totally guilty of overgifting! A source of joy and stress all mixed together. As a mom of four adult children and four grandchildren, I need an intervention!)

My eating out is 2 times over 3 months. I have lent out ornaments to family when they want a different colour theme. I wrap gifts in new tea towels, brown paper and decorate with a ribbon because my cats will eat the stringy ribbons and I don't want a vet bill due to this. Happy frugal friday Kate and K Squad.

Paul and Emmy sent me. I enjoyed your video and your enthusiasm. The first thing I need to do this year is to have a budget. I've never had a Christmas budget. I had no idea how much I spent until the credit card statements started coming in. Throughout the year I'm frugal, but for some reason I go crazy at Christmas. I lose all self control.

Try the local library for things you are going to use only once. My library has a free lending program - mainly tools and kitchen appliances - where patrons can take out an item for a week or two. Who knows, they might have a library table that can be borrowed? Gift Giving: Make it! Crochet it, knit it, macrame it, write it (I once gave a co-worker a story I had written about the office), whatever you do. When my twins were born 28 years ago I made a vow to myself that I would make them something every Yule. Wrapping: I use the same holiday bags every year and have for probably 15 years. Bigger gifts are wrapped in brown paper.

I've been using the Every Dollar FREE budgeting app for over two years, and it's made such a positive change in my life. My frugal tip is to stop shopping for entertainment. My best friend came to spend the night a couple days ago and instead of going shopping, I showed her how to make homemade bagels. Then we ate a home cooked meal with a bottle of champagne that she brought. We had so much fun and I spent less than $10. Keep up the good work! ❤️❤️❤️

Love the way you use recycled deli containers for lunches. I am always filling mine with chili's, soups, curries for my hubby's lunch at work. And I NEVER eat out unless we are travelling and not even then if I can find quarters with kitchen privileges.

I don't have a long Christmas present list these days. But I do pick up things throughout the year and I have a small linen closet in the hallway and I put things in there that I find throughout the year that would make great gifts. Sometimes I'm thinking of a particular person. By the time the holidays come around or birthdays or other occasions I often already have something on hand. I pick up some gifts that are on sale, and some that I pick up on out of town trips like to the Smoky mountains. I also make pottery and often give Pottery gifts.

Kate, about extra ornaments…string them on a ribbon or whatever and hang across the wall like streamers or wreathwork-or incorporate into the greenery. I’ve just got a very small artificial tree now that the kids are grown, but yes, the ornaments ate still important!!!

I’m making a lot of gifts for Christmas - dehydrated fruit in pretty glass containers I bought on sale; vanilla salt & sugar; vanilla paste; bath salts; colloidal silver I made at home (VERY expensive if you buy large quantities!); & teas / candles I’ve purchased from either charities or farmers’ markets.

I have been using brown craft paper and jute twine for Christmas gift wrapping for years. I put a sprig of greens on the bow. Always looks great. ($Tree garland cut up). I also give a jar of Hershey Kisses, (everyone needs kisses). This year I have several Ball jars, a piece of fabric and more jute twine…. Voila! One friend/recipient gives me the jar back so I can refill it for next year! Of all the frugal gifts I give, that one gets the most excitement! My grown children and special friends look forward to this one.

Kate's never going to chipotle again! All the best things in that crocktober meal and you'll ALWAYS have your onions and peppers 🌮. Love these tips, gifts are definitely not my love language so I'm always a fan of reducing gifting 😆 Another wrapping tip - buy your paper after Christmas for the following year 🎁 I've actually been buying clearance Christmas fabric and making reusable drawstring bags to use every year. Eventually we will have enough to use those exclusively. Have a safe and joyous holiday season k-squad!

I'm subscribed to both of your channels, and I'm glad you've found each other! One thing I'm going to do to be frugal this holiday season is I'm going to try to stay away from all of the decorating channels this year. Last year I watched a lot because I was just starting out and I needed some inspiration, but when you're shopping for decor, you're done and any more adds discontent. Another idea I got from this video is I think I will try to use brown paper for my gifts and beautiful ribbon. That's a good idea. Thanks, Kate Kadden! Miko from Maryland
