In today's WWT (Wrist Watch Talk) I discuss a common question that pops up in the comments to my videos. How do I save money for watches and are there any tips? So in this episode I share my own top 5 tips of how I saved money to buy my own grail Rolex GMT Master II among many other watches in my collection. Please free free to share any tips of your own or advice for fellow watch enthusiasts and collectors in the comments. That way we can assist each other as much a possible and all get that much closer to the watches we all dream and aspire to own.

My tips( Things i do to save money in general): 1st: Don't eat out. I do meal prep and save a lot of money a year by doing so. On top of that i have shed off a new pounds by eating healthier. 2nd: I also put aside any dollar bill under $10 ($1s and $5s) in an envelope. Don't count it for at least 6 months (I personally count every December) so you can be pleasantly surprised when you do.

A few things I am doing to save: 1. I opened a savings account that dumps 100 dollars per month for luxury purchases (vacations, watches etc.) and only use it for that purpose. 2. Coin jar. I started doing this in college to pay for flights home at Christmas and have kept it up as a supplement to the saving account. All change goes in at the end of the day. Right now I have a least 4 mason jars full of change waiting for when I pull the trigger. 3. Wasteful spending spreadsheet. When I drive to work instead of walking or cycling, or buy lunch instead of making it at home, I document the cost on a spreadsheet at work. This way I can see the actual cost of doing things I don't need to do. I just started this year and it's already having an impact on my habits. I may not spend all this money on watches but I know I'll be able to enjoy life experiences without harming my future financial goals.

Alex Moffitt I tried that, I just got opened mouths and glazed eyes. I'm forever searching junk shops auctions etc for decent watches. But I also love to look in the windows of the big brands. I also saved a lot of cash to get an Omega, but I don't want to get rid of the nice looking bank balance. Then I think if I die tomorrow some bastards going to get my hard earned cash and spend it, TGV is correct we have a short time on this planet, so WE should enjoy.

I tried that and got a similar result so I started picking up silver and gold at car boot sales mainly and just piling it up in an old record case then going to a dealer to sell up once the insurance company got funny about covering that much and soon found out why just under £15,000 bought for less than £6,000 in a couple of years

Good Video, as always. I try to save for the retail price, then buy the second hand item. Extra money never hurts. Saving with a goal in mind is a lot easier than just saving for savings sake. After you have saved your goal amount, you may find that the work that went into it may not be best spent on the item in question. At that point I like to try and save that amount again. Oddly enough, after that the big purchase doesn't seem so bad. Not to mention that after you buy your item you still have a sum of money ready to jump start the next big purchase. I have done this for years. Cars, guns, knives, guitars, and of course watches, I can treat my self and not put my family though undo strain. Keep up the good work!

Hi TGV , new viewer here from Swansea UK, just been watching your shows the last few weeks , like to share my story of how to save for a new watch , all you have to do is mow the lawn!!!!!!! , let me explain , instead of moving an empty cardboard box to get at the mower I lifted the mower over it instead and yep used a really useless technique and ended up rupturing a disc in my lumber region which required surgery six months later! , so I ended up on lots of scary painkillers which you could not drink alcohol on , so my couple of bottles of wine a week plus all the other rubbish that you pick up at the local shop went out the window so surprisingly quickly I got myself a nice seiko diver ska371 to look at while recovering (been diving in my bath loads ) . Just got to say your videos have been brilliant keep them coming , all I need to do know is find a bigger mower and box and I’ll have a Rolex real soon , cheers Colin

These conversations are difficult. My gut reaction is "saving up for a watch" means you cant inherently afford it. There is a balance, and being honest with yourself is the most prudent advice anyone can receive. If you're making 40,000$ a year, then "Saving up" for a rolex is pretty poor use of your finances. If you're making 80,000$ a year, then saving up for a rolex makes a lot more sense. The saving grace of all this is that higher end watches typically hold their value pretty well. I could buy a rolex subbie for 6000$ right now, and if I really needed to, could probably sell it for that same 6000$ really quickly (hell, might even turn a slight profit). Then again, passion is crucial. For me, watches aren't as important as TGV is obviously, so my "needs" to "save up" are different I suppose.

JgHaverty so many people spend a lot of money on hobbies. Is that not the idea of money, you change your work time into something you really want but can not do yourself. I know people who eat out everyday because that's their lifestyle and they love it and would totally scoff on the need for an expensive watch, car, apartment etc. If you take it like TGV and do not get into debt it does not really matter how much you allocate to what as long as you an everyone of your dependents is content with the spending habits.

Just because you can save up for it, doesn't mean is the right thing to do lol even $4000 old rolex is too much for a watch unless those $4000 is a small percentage of your savings. If you need to save, then you can't afford. If you can't buy it twice, you can't afford. I have money to buy a new rolex right now but that'd be retarded, for one, nobody would think is real and most people simply won't give a shit. I'd rather spend money on some nice shoes.

My parents bought me a dream watch a year ago. Now it doesn't cost a fortune but it does what it needs to do. It's a Tissot T-Touch Solar and that's really all I need (maybe except for a dress watch since this one is pretty casual). It keeps time quite reliably, since it's a T-Touch has several smart watch functions whilst still keeping the traditional face and hands and it's solar charged so it is indeed a perfect everyday watch.

:) i loved this video. so many things that hit it right on the head. ive been trying so hard not to spend money on things or other watches. christmas i wanted to get myself a macbook. then i realized it would cost nearly half the amount of the rolex explorer i want. no you dont need a pair of shoes, youve got 4, no try and hold off on that, go to starbucks when you get a giftcard. wait till you get home to make coffee with that coffee ninja you got for christmas. no you dont need the Sinn 556, yes it looks great but thats a 1000$ less. yeah that grand seiko quartz looks awesome but dont do it. yeah id like to get an xbox one to play forza but i dont have time for it and thats 400$ down the drain. keep telling myself be happy with what i already have and keep on track so I can get my Rolex. something that would mean the world to me.

Excellent advice - when I bought my Grand Seiko the way I did it was to cut back on buying lunches at work (took homemade lunches instead). I cut back on my wine buying (some!)... I also sold a couple of watches to go for the quality not quantity tip. I'm doing the same now for my upcoming Black Bay purchase. So yes, cut back some, go for quality over quantity are my 2 main ways of doing it. Oh, and buy used. While I didn't follow that with the GS (for various reasons) I have done so for nearly every other watch I've bought. Ciao, John

Do what makes sense to you, watches are for your own satisfaction you don’t have to always go for the impressive, expensive watch or brand that’s going to turn heads! I got two solid case back Longines watches because my wrist sweats a lot with the display backs, do I like the sinn 104, or the Oris Aquis, or Aqua Terra-YES ! But they wouldn’t work for me in the summer even on nato or perlon. A quartz dress watch is OK to me and I’m so happy with my Tissot Carson for that. It just makes sense and I love it, I got so many reasons behind each choice of a watch, and that is so satisfying. Stacking black dial divers, just doesn’t make sense to me and some people have like 4 or 5 of those...

After actually holding my grail watch in my hands at my local store I've decided to reduce spending and start saving and maybe pick up extra work where I can to save up. I do have a lot of serious car work that is going to take priority, but once I'm done with that I'm going in on it. If I miss out on it and someone else buys it first, I'll go with my second, far less expensive grail watch.

Speaking of settling with watches, I have an example of both a good compromise and a bad one. When I decided that I wouldn't get a Rolex GMT, I still wanted a watch with a Pepsi bezel. Initially I purchased an SKX009, because the SKX had all of the things I was looking for in a dive watch. However, I knew that it was too large for me and that the dark navy of the 009 wasn't really the color that I wanted. I figured that I would come to ignore those problems, but they continued to irk me. Eventually I bought an SKX013 and a Pepsi Orient Mako, the former fit my wrist better and the latter had the iridescent blue similar to the Pan Am GMT it was replacing.

A related idea: if one is resourceful and in possession of steady hands and strong vision, a dream watch can be built by parts purchased on the internet. If you know what it is that you like about your dream watch and you can execute the task properly, you can purchase high quality components and assemble them into a watch at a significantly lower cost than you'd pay for a pre-built watch. And on top of that, you can use pad printing to affix whatever logo, text or image you like into the dial. A viable option for those who are confident in their mechanical ability.

Hi TGV, very nice video indeed! Thx a lot for your efforts! I also put money aside immediately every time I get money in and focus on what I really want. After flipping watches constantly for about 5 years, I came to a point 2,5 years ago that I sold every piece I had. I started from scratch and since then I only buy watches of which I am 100% sure and that I will not sell again! That's the reason I only buy new. I also bought used watches in the past but I don't like the feeling of it. For me, a watch is something too personal...like clothe. And since Iam at a point that I don't sell the ones I buy anymore, it's worth for me to pay extra and have it brand new. However, this makes only sence if one doesn't intend to sell them. I now own 3 watches and didn't buy one since almost 2 years now. In July I will be able to obtain my next grail - a Cartier Tank! After that, I only fancy a Datejust. So my way to safe is just to buy every couple of years the watches I really want and wear. However, watches are just my third priority after travelling and spending quality time with my loved ones. A nice visit to a restaurant every other week is a must ;) Thanks for all the tips my friend! Cheers!

Great advice, totally spot on. I absolutely agree about homages, when the homage is 500-600 dollars but the real thing is 3-4k? Way better off just saving up and biding time for the 1 or even 2 years it takes, then buying the real thing.
