Every time my wife mentions how much I spend on guitars, I bring up how much more our friends and neighbors spend on hobbies like boating, golf, motorcycles, hot rods and so forth.

Nobody understands why I get up at 3:30 AM each morning to practice before work. I keep telling them dudes in their 50's are not too old to get better and I love the joy music brings! Nothing moves me like the joy an audience gets from a well performed song. If you're lucky you can see the smiles wash over the audience when you hit on the right tune. I'll stop playing when I have assumed room temperature!

It occurred to me that all five of the reasons for not playing guitar that you guys listed here can also be the same five reasons you give someone when warning them to not get addicted to drugs. Thankfully, I never did any hard drugs, and I never went down the addiction rabbit hole, but an argument can be made that playing electric guitar for a lifetime without getting rich might just be similar.

It's like this: if you want to make waves, make sure you have the right stuff before trying. If you have no song ideas, you're just going to have a nice hobby. If you DO have song ideas (I have hundreds, probably forgot thousands), the real pain begins. If your ideas are derivative, congratulations. You'll be competing with millions of other unimaginative people, making music that inspires nothing. If you are truly original, and have a fire in your belly that won't go away, be prepared to throw away all of your personal relationships, your friends, and your family. None of them are going to GAF. Unless you break the barrier, then everyone will suck up to you saying they always knew you would make it. Fuck all of those people. In fact, fuck everyone, because no one thinks you're good UNTIL you are already famous. So, be prepared for years of going nowhere. If you're still making music after years of going nowhere, congratulations. You are now officially an artist. If you're still noodling around after two decades, you're never going to be an artist. Enjoy yourself. Being an artist is great, but enjoyment comes hard. You'll be punishing yourself for not being more successful. You'll have days when you wonder if there's any reason for you to keep on living, much less making music. In fact, there will probably be more days like that than good days. But if you have the determination, and the goods (not necessarily skill with an instrument), someday you might be appreciated. Chances are slim, but it can happen if you have the right stuff. You will need to be strong in your belief of yourself. Stronger than you can possibly imagine (I've been doing it seriously for 34 years). And you'll need to find at least ONE person who believes in you (besides yourself). I've already created an immovable object. Are you ready to apply unstoppable force? If not, then quit now. You'll save yourself years of disappointment, grief, loneliness, and misery. But, there's a bright side, also. If you truly believe in yourself, and you never gave up, you are a true hero. You have earned my respect. You have run the gauntlet, and survived. My channel is going to be featuring a new segment soon on how to make GREAT music if you're a mediocre musician. It is a perfect place for me because I am a mediocre musician. But the music I write, and produce, is better than almost anything out there. Personally, I think this is something that is missing in society: how to succeed when you're not a virtuoso. Your mind is where it all starts. Great music can be made inside your head. The brain is the most integral element in music, and yet gets completely ignored in favor of maniacal skill. I'm going to start to change that. I have no road map on where to start, or what to impart to people to help them write music. But I'm going to give it the old college try.
