What would be your primary use for a bandsaw?

I am not sure what my primary use will be but I know th thing I am most looking forward to using it for. I will help many Cub Scouts, boys and girls now, create the Pinewood Derby cars they want to have. There really is no better tool for the job.

Where can you find a 70.5" bandsaw blade that can cut more than just butter? Must I buy a $150 carbide tipped blade, or are there other options that csn cut grade 5 bolts?
@bradkerr2798
@bradkerr2798 Жыл бұрын
@@andyh8239 Should be some decent bimetal, good tool steel, or hardened carbon steel flex back blades available in that size. Go with higher TPI. Specific recommendations are difficult without knowing your location. Main issue to make blades last is getting the speed slow enough to cut steel; from the typical 1500-3000 FPM of cutting wood, down to 75-300 FPM for ferrous metals.

Great review. I've had a Rikon saw for over 10 years, and they're a good machine. Concerning the need for a brake, just keep an offcut of 2x4 nearby. Each time you cut off the saw, run the sacrificial piece of wood into the blade, and it will stop almost immediately. Learned this from Alex Snodgrass of Carter Tools.

Being old I used to read a lot of the old Fine Woodworking magazines and one of the things the old timers said was they would go for the bandsaw first then get the table saw later. I have to say after using a bandsaw for a few years and dealing with solid wood not plywood I can honestly say I never had the need for a table saw for fine wood working or cabinetry (not a production person). Bandsaws are not to be feared they are pretty easy to use and can do more than a table saw. Just pay attention to setting it up...keep it tuned up and let the saw do the work with your gentle touch and everything will be fine.

Good review, I have the same model bandsaw, there was a promo to include a mobile base (from Rikon). And because it was a floor model, another 10% off. I agree, a brake would be nice. You do need a dust collector, a shop vac does not hack it. Creating usable wood from small logs is a great reason for a bandsaw. I will collect 8"-12" diameter logs, resaw, and let dry, some pretty wood. Thanks.

I have been using a Harbor Freight Band saw. The metal cutting one (4X8 I think). I built a shelf to feed it from the other direction so I can do more cuts with it. I just tried out a HF wood blade, lasted about 10-12 cuts before it dulled. I got the metal cutting blade it lasts. I tried out a 1/4" wood blade on it, and didn't get the results that I wanted from it (not anything near a tight curve cut). I would like a dedicated wood band saw but even the used ones go for high prices. We are almost neighbors, I live on the OK side 30min from Ft.Smith. Keep up the good work, I like your channel.

Hey, Matt! Perfectly timed video. I had a friend give me a tabletop bandsaw recently. It wasn’t working, and he needed space. Turns out the safety switch wasn’t in all the way, so it works like a charm. I’ve never had a bandsaw before, though I’ve wanted one, and a tabletop is all I can handle, because storage and portability are essential. (My shop is the back patio in good weather.) Now, thanks to you, I’m eager to learn all about it and see what I can make with it!

I have the same saw. I agree with all the positive comments and I also wish it had a foot brake. I got the Rikon mobile base and it’s terrible! It has three wheels, not four, so it’s not stable, and there are no adjustable feet to stop the rocking. The saw itself is very well designed and built - the mobile base is a disappointment.

Great video Matt! Now you have me thinking about getting a floor standing bandsaw for my shop. One thing though - the size of the bandsaw (i.e., 14 inches) refers to the diameter of the pully wheels - not the clearance between the blade and the "upright". They're related but that's not what the size refers to. Also, the larger the wheel is, the more power the saw has because there is more angular momentum in the larger pully wheels.

When I first bought a bandsaw late last year I started sourcing some blades. One of the blades I bought was very vaguely descripted, bought it as I thought it'd be a good resaw blade. Turns out it was for non ferro metals but didn't bother to return it as return shipping was half the price of the blade. Now several months after the fact I'm making some boxes with brass and aluminium splines. Guess what's the ideal tool for cutting splines out of flat stock? 🤣

I have that same bandsaw and I first have to say that I love it's performance but I did find one thing of concern. When I use 5/8th or 3/4 inch blades for resawing and, if the tension is on the high side, it sometimes has difficulty in starting up. Maybe I'm keeping the tension too high when resawing or maybe I should convert it to 220 volt. I would love to hear the opinion of others on this matter. One time it popped the breaker on spin up, but mostly I just hear the motor struggle a bit.

I guess it depends on how much you would use jigs and things to help speed up your process of the signs and things. If you could build a few jigs for your table saw that sped up the process that might be better. However iff you need to cut more curves or re saw boards then the bandsaw may be the way to go and use the track saw to break down larger pieces.

So wait, is a band saw kind of like a BETTER scroll saw? (Cuz I hated my scroll saw. It was a Dremel Moto saw & idk maybe I just didn’t know how to use it but I thought it was weak) But also how thick of wood can you cut on a band saw? How much do these things run? I’m a girl who’s just really into learning about woodworking. I have to learn all by myself cuz I don’t have a car to leave so I don’t get to go anywhere, but I watch like a million KZfaq videos & so far I’ve got a router table, a 8 1/2” table saw, band & disc sander, belt sander, a miter saw ive never even opened out the box yet, & most recently I got a LATHE! (A really cheap cheap lathe that goes up to 40”… haven’t set it up yet.. I’m weary though..) I was under the impression was that the TABLE SAW was the staple or King of the wood shop jungle.. but now you just broke it down to me what a BAND SAW is & now… I’m over here wondering why I skipped over these things EVERY TIME I saw them. Never even really tried to know what they were because idk I guess I’d never been properly shown how they work. Now I must start looking into these. I hope I don’t discover they’re insanely priced.. cuz this thing is looking like it’d be perfect for cutting my own corbels & all kind Of things. Wait - 1 downside or difference between a band saw & a scroll saw is… well actually I guess you can only start from the outside of a piece on both huh. Neith of these tolls will Let you start in the center of a piece huh
@AxGryndr
@AxGryndr 2 жыл бұрын
A scroll saw operates more like a jig saw with the blade moving up and down. A band saw blade only moves in one direction. This is a 14" floor model band saw which is about the largest you can get that runs on 110V. Smaller band saws are considered bench top. This Rikon, and similar 14" saws, range from about $1000 to $1800.
@ishtlutz1261
@ishtlutz1261 2 жыл бұрын
@@AxGryndr Awesome. So I looked up band saws immediately after I left here, & the 1st one I saw - was a Ryobi for like $179. Its like a baby version of yours. Lol. BUT, They say big things come in small packages.. I’m wondering how it performs. Just as an example, what differences might there be between the Ryobi benchtop band saw thats just under $200 & your bigger $1800 Rikon bandsaw?
@AxGryndr
@AxGryndr 2 жыл бұрын
@@ishtlutz1261 The main differences between each size of band saw is the height between the table and the guides, the width between the blade and the support column, the size of the table, the size of the blade and the overall horsepower. For comparison, this Rikon has a max height of 13 inches, a width of ~13.5 inches, a table that is 21.5 x 15.75 inches, will accept blades between 3/16 and 3/4 that are 111 inches long, and has 1.75 HP. The benchtop Ryobi on the other hand is 3.5 in height, 9 in width, a table that is 11.75 x 14.75, takes blades between 3/8 and 1/2 and has about 1/3 HP. Therefore, the Ryobi, and similar benchtop size bandsaws, are regulated to more scroll work where the face of the board is on the table. The large bandsaws have wider blades and more power so they can cut with the edge of the board on the table (this is what is known as resawing). Resawing is a bit tongue in cheek, this implies cutting a board again with a saw but doesn't that really happen any time you cut a board with a saw? Anyways, it means cutting the board so that after the cut you have two boards with the same length and width but now with a thinner depth.

I like them. Haven't had any issues. It helps a lot with my back and legs vs standing on concrete.

Wow. I have not noticed it before but I have actually started to notice recently that I overuse 'actually' a lot. I blame Matt.

One more thing is less waste. I've built 4 cedar-strip canoes. When ripping cedar boards down to 1/4 x 3/4, if you have a board that doesn't have any knots, you want to get as many strips as possible. A table saw is faster but more wasteful.

You bought a Rikon ? They are the bottom feeders as far as woodshop tools goes , I bought a Rikon and wish I had spent the $ on a Harvey Brand . Good luck trying to unload it . Enjoy the YTV !

It's a Rikon 10-326 14“ Deluxe Bandsaw. I have one of my own and absolutely love it. Rikon makes the 10-324 14“ bandsaw also- while decent the 10-326 is definitely worth the extra money for the many upgrades over the 10-324 it has, in my opinion.

you left off using a band saw to cut your own lumber from logs. I have a Grizzly Band saw that I'm happy with.

Another thing to like about it would be just throwing small magnets at it for when you're taking a break. 😂
