Going on any vacation by yourself or alone can be scary! However, going on a solo cruise by yourself, is one of the easiest vacations you can take! I have done almost 100 solo cruises by myself and truly believe solo cruising is one of the best ways to vacation! When going solo on a cruise ship, you are part of a broader community of people on the cruise ship! Even Though you might be cruising solo, you always have the option to never be alone.

I cruised as part of a couple or group for years. After my first solo cruise, I decided I do not not want to go with anyone else after that. When I travel alone, I enjoy every day. I have noticed that couples and families who travel together tend to start arguing and complaining about/with each other around day-four of a cruise. That doesn’t happen to me as a solo. Every day is a joy! That is not to say that unpleasant things never happen on a solo trip. But even when I had food poisoning on a cruise in February, I had a great time. I didn’t have to worry that my rough days were interfering with the quality of a travel companion’s experience. I could just relax and take care of myself.

Number one: you don't know what you're missing!! People on cruises are there to have fun and most people are happy and out going. It's very easy to make new friends! Did not expect to cry when I started this video. I've gone on many cruises with my dad, the last one we went on together was 8 months ago. My dad passed away 7 months ago, and I've been thinking about going on a solo cruise but have been feeling hesitant. I searched "reasons to go on a solo cruise," and your video is the first one I saw. I don't know if this is a sign, but it definitely feels like one. 🥺

Brandon, I always travel alone, cruises or not. My Lucy doesn’t count but I take her with me every time I go away. Some people ask me who I go with and don’t understand why I do by myself. They’re lucky to have companions. Not only have I got many friends, the majority of women at my age still have family commitment. I envy them but feel sorry for at the same time. I also find most men about my age are attached so that there’s little chance to meet 1 of them. At least I don’t have to dress to impress them and am happy to eat at the buffet for my entire cruise. You are quite right about the benefits of solo cruising. I recently returned from a river cruise courtesy of RIVIERA TRAVEL. A voyage called CRUISE THE HEART OF EUROPE. Now I chose the reverse itinerary and flew from London Stansted Airport to Budapest Airport in Hungary. I travelled on a five star ship with Riviera Travel called the MS GEOFFREY CHAUCER (all of Riviera Travels cruise ships are named after artists and writers). Cruising the Danube and calling at Bratislava (Slovakia), Vienna and Melk in Austria, and then following the Danube into Germany. The ship then travelled along the Danube - Main - Rhine Canal to reach the River Main, calling at various river ports including Nuremberg and Mainz. And then along the River Rhine to Cologne. It was a wonderful holiday! Seeing new places, making new friends, and thoroughly enjoying the experience of a 15 day long three rivers cruise in Central Europe.

@@TheWeekendCruiser i’ve tried the Norwegian solo lounge at least two or three times on different ships. I find it wonderful mostly because the space is usually just for the solos because that’s where all the solo lounges empty out too. Also they have a coffee machine that’s free for the solo lounge and a few pastries put out for breakfast and just before dinner sometimes some of the solos like me who has had a bottle of wines sent to by their travel agent but does not drink it what to drink at all alone I will bring it to the the lounge and open it there invite two or three people to join me and then we all go out to dinner together . And you’re not obligated to go out with the ones in the lounge to dinner or excursions or anywhere else but have freedom to do if you find one or two friends or companions that you have good conversation with.

As usually a solo cruiser, I often notice couples at breakfast and other meals and they probably spent decades talking to each other know everything of what they’re gonna say but they don’t usually include other people to talk with. I’m making a wide generalization here but that’s what I notice sometimes if I meet other solo travelers in the lounge from many different countries we have a very interesting conversation or sometimes a couple might invite me to join them and then I hear about their country where they’re coming from and I told them about mine.

I was nervous at first because it can be scary, but I ended up having a great time and met so many wonderful people from different parts of USA. I'm looking forward doing another solo cruise, but it has to be cheaper. The room can be expensive because I'm paying for two people. So unfair. The wonderful thing (and possibly the only) about COVID is that we can now work from home..... or a cruise ship.... or wherever (I work in HR Data/Analytics and it can be done from anywhere). Excellent information. So my question more focuses on your vlog's moniker "weekend cruiser." I'm interested in a high-end cruise line like the new Celebrity Edge ships or Viking, but they all seem to run at least 7 days. Are there 3-4 night high-end weekend cruises? Thanks!
@TheWeekendCruiser
@TheWeekendCruiser 9 ай бұрын
Hey David! Great question! Unfortunately, the answer is none that are consistent. When I am planning a trip, I go to www.vacationstogo.com and sort by cruise line and number of nights and scroll the list to see what is available. Higher end cruises will offer random 3 and 4 night sailings but are few and far between. With that said, Celebrity is getting into the weekend cruise market next year out of Port Everglades, though many would argue she isn't as up-sale as she used to be and it certainly not an Edge class ship.

I would love to solo cruise (my partner isn't interested in taking another cruise). However, even for a weekend, the cost is prohibitive. Airfare to and from the port, plus a hotel the night before, and maybe a hotel again before flying home. Maybe once we both retire and move to FL, but until then, there's KZfaq videos of cruises.

Hey Pauline and that is great to hear! Will be an amazing cruise! The vibe does change based on the cruise line for the solo meetup. I always say go the first night, that's when most people will be there. Hang by the bar and see if other people by themselves are there. I always like to ask "are you here for the meetup?" and that always starts a convo. Have fun!

@@TheWeekendCruiser Thank you for the advice! I will definitely go the first night & try to go to all of them. I never was the type to go to a bar by myself (too scared) but will try this too, based on your advice. I generally meet people during dining, in the casino or during dancing. I'm nervously excited about going to my 1st singles event but also anxious to see what they do & what happens during these events! I may have to have a drink first to help get over my fear. I'm not a drinker so 1 drink hits me hard! I will try to remember to report back to you to let you know how it went.

Well, when you work (as most people do) and have limited vacation time available, you can't always take advantage of sales that are for cruises only at a certain time of the year. For work or personal reasons, people often cannot take time off on those dates. That being said, most of the time solo cruisers are stuck with paying the much-hated SINGLE SUPPLEMENT, which means basically paying double as opposed to going with a cabin mate. This alone is a big enough disadvantage for me to do more solo cruises in the future, especially now that cruise prices have gone up an average of 43% since 2019, pre-pandemic. I've done three solo cruises, but I think that will be it for me, unless I find a super deal that I can't refuse!
@TheWeekendCruiser
@TheWeekendCruiser 6 ай бұрын
Hey Dancer! You are right, to get those better rates (even if you are a family of 5) you have to have flexibility in your schedule and that isn't for everyone. Its the same logic I am doing weekend cruises as I can't do 7 nights. The system is definitely not on our side.

Try to find a line that doesn't charge single supplement. Meaning, charge you for two people when you are only one. MSC, Virgin Voyages are the best for running these deals. NCL's black Friday sale might also be a good fit. Go, have a great time and do exactly what you want to do!

@TheWeekendCruiser
@TheWeekendCruiser Жыл бұрын
That is a personal preference of yours. Personally, I have no issues eating by myself in the Windjammer, Main Dinning Room, or a specialty restaurant. Best practice, as soon as you et on the ship, check with the Matre De on your table size and who you are sitting with. If you have a preference to eat alone or join another table, let them know and they can adjust. Often, the tables around me will start chatting me up if I am looking around and no playing on my phone. The experience is completely up-to-you but after you do it once or twice, I promise you will have much less anxiety about it.

Then realized the dates conflict at this point there is no one else available and no one I want to be in a cabin with for 8 nights. A refund is not a option and I REALLY want to go anyway. I know there are aspects I will like and there are plenty of other people on board to make friends with. Plus no one to keep up with will be nice. I only wonder if I will get bored or feel weird eating in the dining room solo. Yeah I know that I can sit with other people but with a person you know it’s a little less awkward and I don’t want to Buffett it the entire time. Breakfast and lunch I have eaten alone but not in the dining room. So I will see.

Good for on you for still going and thinking this through! Dinning is the biggest mind issue to overcome with going on a cruise by yourself and we have all struggled with it. I eating by myself, I find it often helps to sit at the same table and have same wait staff. Gives me a sense of knowing someone. Often, folks beside of you will talk to you if you are open to it. If you meet folks you like on the ship, don't be scared to ask if you can join them for dinner once you are comfortable. If you don't want to meet folks I often play on my phone the entire meal and have seen people bring books to pass the time but servers can get you in and out quick if by yourself. (I love that). Sorry for long message but hope you have an amazing time!
