5 Reasons US Aircraft Carriers are Nearly Impossible to Sink

Aircraft carriers are symbols of American military might, and, recently, a Chinese military professor caused a stir by calling for China to sink two of them to crush America’s resolve.
“It wouldn’t be impossible to hit an aircraft carrier, but unless they hit it with a nuke, an aircraft carrier should be able to take on substantial damage,” said retired Capt. Talbot Manvel, who previously served as an aircraft engineer and was involved in the design of the new Ford-class carriers.

The USS Enterprise, a carrier, was deployed before WW2 started for the Americans and finished the war unsunk, despite having been in most of the heavy fighting, and despite taking and absorbing a lot of hits and battle damage. The USS Enterprise was decommissioned and retired almost 2 years after WW2 ended. In fact, the vast majority of USN ships have never been sunk. No USN battleship was sunk in combat in WW2, unless you count the 2 that were sunk at Pearl Harbor. But they weren't in combat and the US was not in the war or at war at the time. Pearl Harbor was an attack during peace time for the US. The battleships were tied up at dock and largely unmanned. After 60 or 70 years, and several wars, no Supercarriers have ever been sunk.

It's my understanding that there is a small thermal exhaust port, right below the main port. The shaft leads directly to the reactor system. It's only about 2 meters wide, but a direct hit will cause a chain reaction that will sink the entire carrier.

And you're forgetting that most of the piracy happens in and around the indian ocean and of the coast of africa where u already got a rising power like india and its navy already patrol the area, even if US navy pullout the combined forces of other allies like Indian Navy , Royal Navy and the French can surely patrol the shipping lanes from pirates. As for a threat from other navy, well most of the cause of problem in the region is because of US when it invaded Iraq for no valid reason or how US carries out drone strikes through middle east and different parts of africa that actually help recruit more west hating radicals and terrorists. “5 Reasons US Aircraft Carriers are *Nearly Impossible to Sink”* Some Random Swedish Sub: Am I a joke to you?
@ryannichols8315
@ryannichols8315 4 жыл бұрын
@Mike 72 First the US military never said they are almost impossible to sink. But they are very hard to sink. Because they are built to withstand attacks . You can blow a 20 foot wide hole in bottom of one. And it can close that compartment off and keep going. But the main reason isn't because they are built so well that they can run into icebergs. Its because they have many defensive weapons and measures on the carrier and surrounding the carrier. Different battleships on all sides, subs underneath, and some of most advanced aircraft above. And although they likely wouldn't need too, those other ships subs and aircraft will shield the carrier as a last resort. But really the biggest reason they are not likely to be sunk is because trying to sink one would be an act of war that would have the full weight of American military power thrown at whoever was responsible. Say if Russia did it. It would be the end of the Putin regime.

The Aegis defense system mentioned in this video is a component of the US nuclear shield against ICBMs. You know, those things that fly at mach 20. Hypersonic missiles are not a magic bullet. Chiefly, they cannot target due to the very nature of hypersonic flight. Meaning, unless its nuclear equipped, its only useful against a stationary target. There's a reason the US has largely ignored their development. Until very recently, they've had next to no tactical value.

Bcoz they have advanced defense systems and protected and escorted by a fleet of advanced warships. Those escorts can provide other defenses as well. Plus the carriers can deploy fight jets to the target where the threat was deployed. A Nimitz carrier can carry up to 90 fighter jets, but they usually don't fill all the spots with fighter jets. They also carry Airborne early warning planes, small transport planes, helicopters like Seahawks, Vipers, Super Stallion, Ospreys, etc.

In January 2024, a simulated attack on US warships by Chinese hypersonic anti-ship missiles from space was demonstrated at a Chinese research lab in Chengdu. The simulation involved an American aircraft carrier strike group, warplanes with a combat range of 620 miles, and the Chinese PLA launching a salvo of missiles from 745 miles away. The missiles climbed more than 124 miles, then headed for the US warships, whose radars didn't detect them until 10 minutes after launch. By then, the missiles were only 30 miles away. The simulation showed how the People's Liberation Army might use space weapons to strike an American aircraft carrier group.

This is all fine and dandy but there's a couple of facts that probably needs to be brought up. The record. Underwater speed achieved was over 44 knots which is about 50 mph. You can rest assure there are submarines out there that can achieve speeds that can match that of aircraft carriers. Also, you have hypersonic weapons along with advanced underwater missiles that travel at record speeds. Great video! But I guess we really won't know how impervious these beasts are until we actually get into a real hot confrontation. Might be sooner than later.

Being difficult to sink is one thing, being put out of commission are two different things. The USN's large deck carriers have an armored flight and hangar decks, multiple rows of compartments between the outer hull and the hangar deck. The theory is that battle damage could be contained and, flight operations would continue. The greatest danger to a carrier is the Russian "keel hunter" torpedo with a one-ton warhead from a submarine. That can stop a carrier's ability to make war.

You fire nukes at that Carrier group the last thing you're going to see is the Bow, the Stern or both halves sinking together or the ships rolling over as they sink. That's why we are classified as WMDs! Trust Me! And let me tell you how it can happen. Multiple ships, aircraft and submarines fire near Nukes simultaneously or in succession or sequentially.

With all due respect, this type of "invulnerable thinking" is the Achilles Heal of all militaries throughout time. Even with carrier task forces that include submarines and surface support, the fleet and carrier are in danger to: 1) High altitude ICBM type missile coming in like a precision dive bomber 2) Swedish type “low tech” HIGH tech diesel submarine possibly able to enter too close to fleet. 3) Swarm attack by much lower value vehicles in high numbers. 4) Other? @@jeffburnham6611 Partially true. Fighters tend to have pure-jet engines (they lack a fan by-pass), plus the weight and complexity penalties of adding reverse-thust would be undesirable, and off little operational benefit. Passenger aircraft with high by-pass jet engines usually (but not always) have reverse-thust and is only used at high speeds upon runway touch-down where the probability of FOD due to debis ingestion is unlikely. For this reason, among others (imagine what would happen to airport ground equipment!), reverse-thust is not used on the taxiway or apron, but it could be. Turbo-prop aircraft such as the C130 Hurculies do have reverse-thrust and use it regularly, however the engines are high up which makes FOD unlikely, and the mechanism for reversing the propeller's pitch is relatively simple (with respect to adding reverse-thust functionality to a solution that requires a variable-pitch prop).

If Carriers aren't at risk that's because they monopolize nearly the entire fleets offensive capability for passive escort duty. As well as most of the US defense budget. And if you throw enough personnel and resources at any difficult problem you usually get it solved. Except of course the Ho Chi Minh trail paradox. Where nothing worked ever!

When in green water diesel electric subs will always have an advantage. 1 Torpedo will not sink a carrier. The US tried to sink it's own carrier and gave up after 4 weeks and scuttled it. Ill also post a sinkex exercise(where they test older ships armor by destroying them to see how much they can take) ""The ship was pummeled by explosions both above and below the waterline," The War Zone reporter Tyler Rogoway explained in 2018. "After nearly four weeks of these activities, the carrier was scuttled. On May 14, 2005, the vessel's stern disappeared below the waterline and the ship began its voyage to the seafloor." "America stood up to four weeks of abuse and only succumbed to the sea after demolition teams scuttled the ship on purpose once and for all, it's clear that America was built to sustain heavy damage in combat and still stay afloat.""
