At 8:36 the image on the right is the 24-200 and the left is the 24-70 2.8 z lens. My labels got deleted in FCP... but if you were wondering it just shows how good the 24-200 is.

I’m a fashion/make-up portrait photographer based in Switzerland and for static work I mostly use an H6D. Last year I invested some time to select a new full frame system. I’ve used the A7RIV, the R (and later on the R5 for a few days), the S1R, the SL2 and the Z7 (and briefly the Z7II). I can confirm that the Z7II is not only the best landscape camera of the bunch, but also the best for fashion and portraits. The tonality, dynamic range, colors and sharpness are unbelievable. The raw files are so easy to process. My editor claims it saves him 30% time over Sony and Canon files. Let alone the files from Fuji. Only the SL2 came close. I’ve never used Nikon before, but for this image quality I gladly forfeit a few milliseconds in AF speed vs the Sony and Canon. Next to that the Z lenses are stellar. Still some limitations in choice, but what’s there is absolutely amongst the best for full frame. I find myself picking up the Z more often for personal work as well. As a photographers camera it’s the best of the MILCs that I know of. You can tell that pros have been consulted for this camera.

I'm looking to up grade to the z7 II, i shot with the z6 mark1 for a year and a half and it produced some of my favorite portrait shots ever, and i completely agree. The raws are extremely flexible. I wish more reviews would speak more on the raw files. More than just the technical details of the noise ets. Nikon raws have incredible flexibility. Im look to get this z7II very soon 🤙🏽

@jacobh5817
@jacobh5817 2 жыл бұрын
@@terencegibbons5455 hi Terence, first the Nikon NEF files have great lattitude, meaning that you have a lot of possibility to recover shadow and highlight details without introducing side-effects. In general that is an advantage of a larger sensor over a smaller sensor (there are exceptions though) but esp. the Z7 sensor is great considering the high resolution. Furthermore, Nikon files hardly need sharpening or noise reduction as Nikon’s standard are already very good. Fujifilm applies standard quite aggressive sharpening and noise reduction. You can dial them down in the settings, but only for jpegs. But for us the most important difference is the very neutral colors that Nikon applies. Already in standard mode the colors are very realistic and without annoying color casts. When compared to Fujifilm, you will notice that esp. the X-system has a blue/green color cast with skin tones and a magenta color cast in shadows. I’m talking RAW files here, not jpegs after film simulations. That always requires work in post. Of course we have Styles for that (in Capture One, or presets in LR) but after applying a Style you always need to fine-tune. For landscape and product photography that is not a big deal in general, but for fashion and (make-up) portraits like we do, it’s very critical and always additional work. By the way, the X-cameras are more affected by this than the GFX line. So, we are extremely pleased with the Z-system. By the way, another advantage of the Z-mount are the great lenses Nikon offers for that. We use various lenses but each of them is amongst the best ever in their category. Perhaps not always the fastest in aperture, but stellar in performance. The 85/1.8 is a great example of that and so are the 50/1.8, the 50/1.2 and the 24-70/2.8. Gorgeous stuff…

@@majamidzor3801 Hi Maja, it is not worthwhile for me to upgrade to a Z7 II because it is not much of an upgrade for me. I am waiting to see what the Z9 has to offer and maybe go for that one. If I decide against the Z9, I might go for a Z6 II or just wait and see if they come out with a Z 8 or who knows what will be next. Nikon seems to be taking quite a while to come out with new cameras in the higher end market so I’ll just have to wait and see.

I have the R5 and Z7ii. The Nikon files are great. I used the Nikon at an event instead of the R5 with the Z70-200s and liked it a lot. I was trying out the wide s and wide L with face detect and it worked very well. I actually had the R6 and sold it for the Z7ii as if I were out in the weather elements, I would trust the sealing of the Nikon more so. I definitely thought about going all Nikon once the Z8/9 hits. It’s a very fun and addictive system with great ergonomics and functionality.

It makes me feel more sane to hear others having a similar experience to me. I'm gald to hear the z7ii worked well for you for event type shooting as I have yet to use for that. I really feel like the z70-200 is the superior lens to the canon rf70-200. Even though it is bigger, its crazy sharp and I feel renders a better image. I think this system will continue to gain traction.

I’m glad I came a crossed this video. I’m currently on the Nikon f-mount system and looking to moving to the Z mount. I’ve been following all the Nikon Z8 rumors forever and have been holding out for that camera but just getting tired of waiting so last week I kind of reluctantly bought a used Z7ii. I do a lot of hiking and landscape photography so I think the Z7ii is going to be perfect for that. When the Z8 comes out I’ll have a deck on to make because I also like sports and wildlife. Can’t wait for my Z7ii to arrive any day now, I’m going to pair it up with the 24-120 F4.

The Z7II is a great landscaping tool . Not sure if you mentioned it , but the fact that it has 64 native ISO is great . Also I like how when you flip the LCD screen out it disengages the EVF . I also came from Sony ( A7RIII , A7III) , but I enjoy using the Zs more . I currently have a Z6II and just traded my Z6 for a Z7II ! Good times !

I'm only at reason 4 (lenses) and have to comment on the quality and honesty of this video. Up front, you emphasized how this was subjective for you. Your reasons are outlined with just the right amount of examples (something missing from other so-called "reviews"). Just like you said the z7II felt like a camera designed by photographers for photographers, this video feels like a photographer being straight about his gear. Too often we have videos that feel like KZfaqrs making gear videos. Thank you.

I agree 100% as have been shooting with the Z6 for a few years for landscape and found for wildlife had to shift to Canon but l always use the old Z6 for landscape because of the files as you said. The Z system is definately underrated yet certainly has it's issues in regards sport and wildlife but good to see it getting some love. Yes the autofocus is slow but very precise and l sure wish Canon had pinpoint as it allows you to get between branches n stuff.

I agree with all your points. I mainly shoot landscapes as well. I started off with the Z6 and I have put it through so much punishment like seascapes, waterfalls and in heavy rain. I never had any issues. I now have the Z7ii and I absolutely love it. I also do a little bit of portraits and the files that come out of that are amazing also. The eye autofocus is plenty good for portraits.

Being a landscape photographer & Nikon user since the film days I always believe that Nikon has always produced the best cameras for landscape photographers. There were the dark years when Canon took the limelight for its superior autofocus system back in the late 80s & early 90s. Many of us even today still value the old AI & AI-S lenses which have their unique characteristics when adopting to newer bodies (I have a Z5). I have one Z-Mount lens the 28mm f/2.8 & it's a lovely carry around lens. It's awesome to hear many photographers praise the Z lenses not only on its sharpness but quality & character. It was refreshing to hear from a Sony user to switch to Nikon for the reasons you stated in your video; well done!

And also the way the computer handles the files. 50% is the taking of the image and 50% is post production. Cheers. Derek.

I had been researching a new 'landscape' camera to replace my ageing Canon 5D2 (for what feels like years!). I eventually went with the EOS R because of budget realities and existing lenses, but my conclusions, all things considered, went something like: Best value - Sony A73 (+ Tamron lenses). Best (landscape) Camera - Yep, the Nikon Z7('s).

I am a canon shooter, I have an aging 6D and when I held the z7ii I have to say it's a beautiful camera in the hand. Feels wonderful to hold and very well designed. It also looks beautiful. I am very tempted to look into the Nikon cameras as an upgrade as they offer much better value for money IMO.

Having used an A7riv and z7 cameras side by side for several months, I can say I found myself reaching for the Nikon as often I could. As a landscape photography tool, I prefer it… that being said the A7riv is a really great camera… we actually put together a review of it on our channel last year kzfaq.info/get/bejne/e9CDa6R-1prdqX0.html . The one change I would make to that video now is that now that Sony has released the A7riv-a with the better screen they have fixed the biggest usability concern I had. Still the z7ii with iso 64, pin point af, low-light af exe beats it for pure landscape.

I just added the Z50 & 16-50 kit alongside my Z6II. I think it's a great combination having full frame and APS-C bodies. The little Z50 is so versatile, very capable, and convenient to carry around. The 70-200 S would pair well with the Z50, since that lens has VR. I frequently have my Z50 set up with my 70-300 4.5-5.6 AF-P (also VR), it's a super combo. Nikon's instant rebates are still in effect, the Z50 & 16-50 are currently $100 off.

GREAT VIDEO. Can you help !! My Sony 7 R is not working anymore and I have many Sony lenses. I saw the NIKON Z7 2 with the 24 to 200 yesterday and fell in love. I own the Nikon D800 with 3 lenses . very heavy. Is the adapter from Sony to Nikon a better choice to keep my Sony lenses? Or buy the camera with the Z lenses or buy the adapter and use my NIKON lenses. I like to do travel photography!!!! Thank you in advance.

I would check if there is recent firmware to the Sony to Nikon adapter, but I couldn’t get mine to work at all on the z7ii… honestly Sony lenses are selling pretty well right now and the adapter experience was soso at best. You really couldn’t go wrong with the 24-200 for travel.

Landscape, Portaiture, product photography. Nikon was smart with their lens flange mount size. The only thing better for scapes if weight is not a concern would be the 100mp MF camera. Since you have used all 3 brands, I'm interested in hearing your take on the EVF experience with all 3 brand cameras. If I understand it rite, with the Sony cameras you can zoom in the EVF which can help with chimping , etc. in sun light. Also the what you see is what you get? What is your take on it please?
@summitbid
@summitbid 3 жыл бұрын
The differences in EVFs for my use are small… you can actually zoom in on all three brands and I actually like the zooming in process on the Nikon best because you can map a button to zoom in 100% with a single press but the process on Sony and canon are not bad. The “what you see is what you get” is equally good on all three as well. Technically the A7riv has the highest resolution but I didn’t really notice a difference even when I was using them at the same time.

Thanks for the video... trying to choose between the A7RIII and the Z6ii. AF is the primary concern. I primarily shoot landscape but have 6 kids lol. Nikons DXO marks on their sub $1k lenses combined with their ergs, Snapbridge, screen resolutions etc. is just the best all around choice (and at $2500 with the 24-70 F4!). The A7RIII with the Tammy 28-200 is also a very attractive consideration. Would love to hear your opinion. Sub'd! Looking forward to watching your journey.
@summitbid
@summitbid 3 жыл бұрын
If you are shooting mostly landscapes have you considered the original z7? You can find them for about the same price as the z6ii and you get the resolution bump. But between the z6ii and a7riii I would still go Nikon. I shot a lot of shots I love with a7riii but I wouldn’t go back to it. The Nikon colors and image quality plus ergos would outweigh the resolution for me.

Hello All! May be it will be helpful for Nikon 7zii owners. I had problem "Lens initialization failed" during the first attachment of 24-200 Nikkor Z Lens to camera. It was solved when I turn camera on with the lens adjusted to the maximum focal length - 200 мм. It was my second lens of this type. The first has defect of small plastic ring with Nikkor name at the front of the lens - the ring was not fixed correctly - it jumps out - I exchanged it. The first lens also has initialization error - but it was gone by turn camera off and on as suggested.

This is a tough call, and you are not going to make a wrong decision. In my eyes, the big advantage of the a7IV is the better video specs. It also has better tracking autofocus. With the z7II you get better image quality and dynamic range, higher MP and still very good video. To me it comes down to the lenses, and I feel that Nikon has better landscape glass at better prices than Sony. The 14-30 f4, 24-120 and 24-200 are all reasonably priced and have really great image quality (especially the 24-120. I sold my 24-70 2.8 because that lens is so good). Sony Equivalent glass (16-35 f4, 24-105 f4) is not quite as good when I have used it. Hopefully I helped you more than confused you lol.

@@summitbid I just recently transitioned from a D750 to a Z5 but I'm still using my old F-Mount Nikkor 24-120mm f/4 lens which has served me well as my general purpose lens. It produces awesome quality images plus the autofocus performs better on the Z5 with the FTZ adaptor! I can't imagine how the Z version of the 24-120 performs!

It's only because of a certain fro dude spilling ill influence about Nikon that it attracts so much bullshit and negativity. Any one used these Z bodies know that they've got the potential to be endgame. On latest firmware they are about as easy to use as any brand. And you get some of the best lenses today. Yet the Z mount has so much potential in future.

I enjoyed your video but I’d disagree that the R5 or Sony’s are better as a general cameras. I’ve learned the hard way that the KZfaqrs only tell you the good things about certain cameras and explore bad things about other brands. Do you know that with the R5 if your battery level drops to 70% then your continuous shooting (mechanical shutter) drops from the 12 FPS to around 5? And the raw bit reduces from 14 to 12 if you shoot with electronic shutter? These won’t be told on KZfaq my friend.

Extended shutter ( up to 15 min). Better low-light af (better af in general). There is no huge new feature, but the z7ii is just a snappier, better experience overall. Also dxo mark claims the dual processors squeeze a little better performance out of the sensor but I can’t tell the difference at all in real use.

You'll be well resistant to hearing this, but amidst your comments about usability, design, IQ and purpose-built "photographer first" for landscapes, you really should do yourself a favor and have a look at the Pentax K-1.
