Let me remind you, Tom, that your adventures and photos are for you. For your escape, it really doesn't matter what we think. It is for us to enjoy your adventures because some of us don't get to go on them. Or maybe we get inspiration from your adventures. What ever the case might be from our end it doesn't matter. 19:47 That's exactly what I do. I picked up my first camera to learn more about photography without any thought of what to shoot beforehand. Since I loved photographing my friends candid style with my phone while at school, I then got to learn about street photography. But in the end, it's the curiosity of trying any kind of shoot and photographing any kind of subjects which caught my attention. Now I always have my camera in my sling bag and ready to shoot whenever I want given the opportunity, subjects, and mood.

Two tips that might help. Before I set out, I always let off an "insect bomb" in the vehicle and then close it up for at least 12 hours, then air it out. By doing that any midge, mosquito or other bug that climbs or flies into your vehicle is history before it gets to bite you. I also carry some sort of bug spray with me that is designed to ward off ticks etc. and apply it before I head out... I know all that sounds pretty toxic, but here, in Australia, if you don't follow the boy scout motto of being prepared even the bloody flies will carry you away... ;)

Weather tip! If you stand with your back to any breeze, and look up - if the clouds are going straight over, or from behind, or don't move at all the weather will still the same. If the clouds go left to right, the weather's going to get worse. Right to left, weathers going to improve. Rough rule of thumb. Plus it can be cloud and rain on one side of a hill (esp if water source is near by) and sunny the other. I'm a mine of useless information. Great video

I hardly ever comment on youtube videos but I just wanted to say great job with this one. What a breath of fresh air to see a photographer relax and just have fun with photography. Compared to all these instagram photographers chasing the most extreme locations and lighting nonstop, this reminds me of when I first started enjoying photography on camping trips and just getting outside to shoot and being curious about everything. I'm taking a big trip soon and this is probably the reminder I needed while planning to enjoy the journey as well.

As you worry about detail in the blacks, I suggest to try the following: set the light meter in the Z 7ii to "highlight-weighted" and select auto-bracketing for exposure, e.g. with two shots (+2F) and e.g. 3 EV increment. The +2F gives two frames, first at 0EV exposure correction next at the chosen EV correction. As the "highlight-weighted" metering takes care of the highlights, you will have zero detail loss in there. You need one or two additional shots for the blacks, as said at 3EV distance. Not because the camera cannot record detail in them but because likely the blacks will be more grainy. You might try silent shutter as that removes all vibration.

What you said about there always being another day really struck a chord - I managed to get a free morning to go out shooting on Monday, but the location I'd picked to go for the first time wasn't as good as I hoped; wrong time of day, wrong (no) light, tide was too far out, clouds were too flat and I didn't even take any photos. Been feeling down about it all week because I'd felt like I completely wasted my free morning. Hearing your perspective has really helped changed how I felt about that trip. I'd put too much pressure on myself to get an image I was proud of and didn't stop to enjoy the trip for what it was.

Thank you for the video. Had hoped to hear more about your use of the Z7II but enjoyed it anyway.

What a result stumbling on that location. The z7ii is an amazing camera. I am loving mine. I’m finding the auto focus is absolutely amazing, especially how it copes with low light. I’ve Used it for Astro as well and it will focus on the faintest star.

No need to auto focus on stars. Set your camera to focus to infinity when switched on, then put in manual focus, and start shooting. Always works and save time, especially when you are swapping lens

@@martinsarre I agree Martin but I find that at full infinity stars are sometimes just a bit soft and you have to just back it off slightly. I was really just making the point that even with a very small low light object the auto focus on the Z7ii will pick it up and focus. Unlike my previous d810. 👍

@@IanBarrowPhotography Never soft on the z7ii. I’ve used this method 100’s of times it is 100% accurate on all the Nikon z primes I am using. pin sharp check out the vid below and test for yourself. Nikons best party trick 🙂

Firstly loving the book. What really comes across in this video is your love and passion for photography and its infectious, it's great to see you focussing on that and taking us along for the ride. I have never tried to make a video like you do but it always strikes me how demanding and time consuming it must be as well as distracting, your videos are always really well shot, great storylines but todays was really enjoyable just seeing your love for what you were doing, more like this would be great.

Making videos does add a lot to the workload, but once I'm in a rhythm it's not too bad and sometimes, it's even fun 😄

Another great video Tom! The shots of the afterglow and boats are stunning! Wonderful shadow detail and integrity in that Z7II!
