Ah, two great nations divided by a common language. Ed, if ever you come over to the UK, be sure to look up the meaning of 'fanny'. That said, taking the American interpretation of the word actually makes fannypit non-sexist, so you're right!

“We act as though comfort and luxury are the most important things in life, when all we need to be truly happy, is something to be enthusiastic about.” Charles Kingsley I have savoured this quote like a good wine/beer/rum for the last four decades. The most important thing I’ve learnt ? No matter how big or flash your boat is, you still see the same dawns and sunsets, swim in the same ocean, eat the same freshly caught seafood, and drink the same rum. Sailing is a great leveller. Cheers, and thanks for your great videos. Mach Buffett

It’s me again, I forgot. I can’t swim a stroke. Never fell in and let’s be honest, if you go in off shore you ain’t getting out. Can’t wait to get afloat again next year. Real boaters are all in it together and are the same. 20ft or 200ft, you’re all the same. Best people on earth by far. None judge mental, complete headcases but in a great way. Never tried deep fat frying in a F9 with Beamer rollers and a nice wind over tide on the bow 😂 what’s not to love. Just subscribed, love you guys. Keep them sails full and the rum flowing (you got to love rum). Best wishes, Chris ex capt, SV Ohana.

Wonderful video guys. As usual you got all the big things spot on. I loved that your first comment was about food. In my 70 years I've sailed 220,000 miles, been to 96 different countries (not all by boat), sailed out of one marriage and, literally, into another, fathered 3 great kids (and now am blessed with the great joy of 6 grand children), truly enjoyed a long and satisfying career and remember the first tastes of new and exciting food from all my ports of call. From Boothbay Harbor in Maine, US where I learned boats and sailing at my grandfather's knee and ate my grandmother's clam chowder like mother's milk to my recent return to Cuba, where we used to sail to in the '50s and happily can visit once again, and food I remember from my childhood, it's amazing how evocative food is in stirring old memories. I'm sure you will find great joy in Japanese cuisine which varies profoundly from it's southern semi-tropical flavors to the Szechuan like heat of Hokkaido's cuisine. Happy sailing and adventurous eating.

I'm playing catch up, haven't been watching much you tube in 2018. there feels like there is a change in your last 2 months of video, can't put my finger on it but its like you are refreshed and excited . maybe it was the visit home or the Anambas or the new challenge of your next journey, anyway i like. i did like your reasons not to buy a boat and reasons why you should boat, i think anyone who goes camping fishing 4WD power boating all ready has a good understanding that its not all fun and games. last year i met people who had never been out of the city, camped, put up a tent, etc. they would be the people who would get the wrong idea watching videos, most channels show good and bad side of live a board sailing. some more good as they want the hits / income, i think you two show a good balance. these videos refreshed our patience and determination on our wait to be able to do this. it was in 2016 i had the idea of why fly or go on a ship cruise when you can get a boat and do it at your own pace. since then i watch videos / read blogs, research boats / places and start to form a plan. 3 years till we buy our big sail boat, 2 years for local cruising, learning to sail and repairs. thanks for the great videos. cheers davo and colleen

"A sailboat is a lot of work". So is living on a small farm with 2 barns, pastures, horses, weeds, a house, vehicles, a tractor, a mower (all of which need to be maintained), housework and cleaning, and keeping a fulltime job - while saving money and trying to learn how to sail so you can tell "The Man" to piss off in a few years. A boat takes work - until you think about all the crap we have to do just to maintain a job and a household. A Jabsco rebuild on a sexy ketch a few times a year seems like a good trade for a 9-5 job. :-)

Liz....I chuckle inwardly when I see your facial expressions. Always wondering if there's a lot more inside there to say that you opt not to reveal. I have recently become an 'armchair' lover of sailing because of that freedom you guys expressed. I always feel there is the indescribable thrill of sailing upwind a tad off keel and seeing the wake of the boat skimming through the water. There are issues I have not heard of yet with the vlogs I have seen and that is security and entering jurisdictions that might be understandably risky for non-nationals.

Good one Liz and Jaime. 👍I liked that you put reasons that are "far out there" like working that grey matter and the passive exercise of just living on a boat.... you can never get too comfortable like on a couch. I would add that if you like travelling, there is no better way to see there world then from your boat as your base. Plus, once you arrive at a destination, it's much easier to adjust the length of your stay if you really like the place. We sailed around Croatia and this was the best way to see the country. Many places are still only accessible by boat or maybe only visited by locals who know better. Wishing both of you good vibes!

I thoroughly enjoyed this video. It’s a very insightful summary of the esoteric benefits of owning a boat. Again very well done! If I may I will build on your thoughts by adding cruising is therapeutic. For the most part sailing in active conditions bombards the senses to the point it washes the stresses and concerns of the day out of your mind. With all of your senses, sight, hearing, touch, smell, taste, activated by the forces of Mother Nature and the motion of the ocean, there is little room for anything else, especially negative thoughts, to take residence in your mind. Now this may apply more to part time cruisers still holding on to the traditional daily grind and the baggage that goes with it, however may still apply to the long term travelers such as yourselves. For many years I toured North America on motorcycles and felt the same therapeutic effect while riding the bendy bits of a mountain road as I do cruising around the gulf islands of British Columbia. It’s absolutely exhilarating. We used to say you never see a motorcycle parked in front of a psychiatrist's office. I think the same could be said of sailors.

I'm just getting into sailing, and this video and your "5 reasons why you shouldn't buy a boat" have been *very* helpful for me in determining what it is that I want out of sailing and a boat. I'm not cut out to live aboard a boat 24/7/365. However, I live in the Seattle area and there are many islands to sail to and from literally at my back door. Being able to do that kind of sailing while maintaining a residence on land is really what I want. (Along with maybe the occasional run down to San Francisco or Mexico or up to British Columbia. But, again, I wouldn't really have known that if I hadn't watched your videos.) Thank you! I've subscribed and will keep watching!! Be safe!!!

I like you said, life is not perfect. Isn’t that the reason to live life. Sitting in a house leads to your death unless you have hobby’s, which cost quite a bit. Hobby’s can be very expensive. Also, what do hobby’s produce. Not much really, unless its gardening.

At present I have three an Arden 4, Westerly 25 and Macwester Wight II ketch. The latter on a whim because I could, our weather is enough to make you run away to the Carib, Med or sunnier climate. However our dreams must sometimes remain exactly that, raising a family and the commitments of buying a home taking priority. Later on time and health play their part in constricting your horizons, this doesn't mean your not having a life ! Enjoy what you have be it dinghy, kayak, pair of binoculars, if we all had wishes come true would the oceans become cluttered I don't think so. As for Follow the Boat it's an example of what can be if you make the right choices, so go ahead choose !

Yes, I cannot wait. I have been giving it alot of thought. Not only the boat but what I can physically do, the very strong possibility of needing permanent crew, and how I will deal with it. Until I got hurt, I lived the life of what alot would consider a loner. I lived alone, and alot of my work was alone. I either was on a crew or ran a crew but almost always I was the guy out working alone. I liked it that way. But, that is no more. I'm going to have to find someone to take me out open water sailing to see just how limited I really am. Then as Liz told me, go find a Nordhavn Motorsailer. It's funny, I was already looking real hard at them. It's looking like I will be able too look seriously and purchase my new to me boat by middle of summer. Hopefully my boat of choice is still for sale then. Thank you for all you do. Be safe!

All very good points.👍 I used the term ‘cunning linguist’ in my father of the bride speech - we had guests from all over and I welcomed them in their language and concluded by saying that my fluency probably surprised you all - but now you all know I am a bit of a cunning linguist - surprisingly went down a storm.😉

If you remember my previous comments, this video resonated again. Not interested in sail yachts, only motor. Your lifestyle is really what I desire. Apart from being land-lubbers (now), this is how we live. Clothes?, meh (my shorts have a big hole as we speak), product? meh, liquid soap and shampoo is it. Convention? Occasionally when we have to, however running a small business from home means we rarely have to do the corporate thing. We are the worst gays ever. Your videos more than any others are creating an itch that has to be scratched. If health and wealth persist, the clock is ticking. Thank you for that. Your vistas and appreciation of remote idylls are a pleasure to watch. Unfortunately a lot of the world is dangerous for us, so we will never see some of the places you have been, but we can live vicariously and see the rest ourselves.

Well done!!! I agree with you.I really like your style of putting such an issue. Syntetic, clear and understable (as the other blog, 5 reasons why not to buy). On this matter i wish to have your advice. I was born in Venice 64 years ago, my eyes and my mind were always facing the sea. Space, sense of freedom, travelling,looking for unknow and remote places on this planet and imagination, dreams and so on. So i started to sail around from the age of 15. From many years i own a ferrocemento kech (Endurance 37). I decided to sell her for many different reasons. She is a fantastic blue water boat but i am getting old and she requires a lot of agility and fhysical work. Actually i am looking for another boat and after a long search on internet i found two types that i consider suitable for me (consider that most of the time i am a solo sailor) not more then 12m. lengh. One is a Westerly OceanRanger 38/39 ft. and the other one is a Sweden Yacht 38 ft. Please when you have time just give me your opinion. Thanks a lot. P.S: the t shirts of Esper are very nice! how to buy it and what is the cost each one. Fair wind el venesian
@followtheboat
@followtheboat 6 жыл бұрын
Hey Riccardo. Both Westerlies and Swedens are solid boats. If I had to make a choice I'd go with a Sweden on paper, but the reality is there are many factors to consider. I can't help you on that because I haven't seen either boat so you'd need to sit down and thrash out the pros and cons of each. By that I mean the condition of each yacht. T-shirts are available in our shop! www.followtheboat.com/shop Fair winds to you and good luck with your purchase. Let us know how you get on!

Words to live by... Now while I didn't share your reasons not to buy a boat with my spouse, I will indeed share this one with her! All good reasons. Also, it can be cheaper to live aboard than to live ashore. And the people, the cruisers you meet are pretty cool people. Just don't buy a boat and sit it in a marina and forget about it. Use it. Boats can be holes in the water you throw money into, and leaving a cruising boat sit around for months or years at a time will be just that. Buy it and use it.
@followtheboat
@followtheboat 6 жыл бұрын
"Buy it and use it" - too bloody right! One of the reasons they go wrong sometimes is because they are just left too long. When you live on a boat you're familiar with all its noises and foibles, and can pick up on a problem at the early stage. I hope your spouse doesn't go for a wander through our videos, otherwise you'll be in trouble! 😃 Liz
