What's it like living on a sailboat, in a space 13m x 4m? SY Esper has been our home for more than 10 years! It's amazing how much you can pack into a liveaboard sailboat and still have plenty of room to live comfortably.
If liveaboard sailing is what you're after, then the sky is your roof and the ocean your horizon; it really doesn't seem like you are living in a tiny home.

That was an interesting tour. I imagine that it's changed a lot, given that was 6 long years ago. Wow. 6 years. Anyway, our sailing journey has just begun. Hopefully we will learn much from you guys. BTW we are almost 100% sure we are also going with an Ozefridge to replace our ageing eutectic system that was installed when the boat was new in 1979. When purchased, just under 2 months ago we had a brand new (in 2006) whopping great 100W solar panel (I think - markings have all faded into oblivion), which is in the process of being upgraded to 4 x 440W bifacial panels, with mandatory Lithium house battery to replace the 12 year old AGMs. Anyway, appreciate the tour.

I really liked how you explained the way you split the boat up into “his, hers, ours, and Millies” areas. You keep the relationship dynamic and interactive despite being cooped up in such a small area. I’ve never sailed and probably never will, but I find what you do to make sailing work pretty fascinating.

Thanks for the tour. It's great to see the choices people make in their living space and the reasons for them. Designs these days tend to follow a fairly fixed format, but you both have deviated in a practical way because the Esper is your primary living space. I know I am seeing this in April of 2018.and spent the entire day watching your refit videos. What a spectacular experience that must have been. The refit was really beautiful nd now you have a brand new boat "like". During the course of these videos as you were doing all your auditing of time and parts that went into this major undertaking...you mentioned that many were wondering what a refit like this cost. As you mentioned many of the materials (especially) those that have to be imported cost about the same anywhere but there is monumental saving in labour. You communicated you would share with your viewers what a refit like that costs. I know there are expenses with rent and food and travels home....but the actual refit cost would be fascinating to know if you wouldn't mind sharing that with us. Fair winds you good people.

Watched the entire refit series till very late last night. Loved it! Don't think I would have done anything different. I really liked your choice of the light and bright decor. I am going to go back and watch the beginning episodes. Unless I missed it, I never saw the recap of what the project/refit cost was, as you promised. I am sure many others are also very interested since it opens the possibility for some cruisers that are not as well heeled as others to consider doing the same. Thank you.

12:35 The problem with your "noisy floor" comes probably from thermal expansion. In the yard, the hull was more or less at the same temperature as "outside". But once back in the water, the hull temperature dropped down to the water temperature, around a 10 degrees difference (Celsius)... What happened is that the hull "retracted" and when you walk around the wooden floor "cracks"! What You need is a 5 to 10 millimeters flexible joint between the floor and the "walls" and you'll be fine.

In regards to your squeaky floor. I was watching a video about the new 55 foot Amel. They put a layer of thin leather around the lip on the floor and replaced the "lid". This stopped the two pieces of wood from rubbing together.

Guys a couple of observations... you have a screw out on your boom fitting on the mast it looks like. If so... best get that looked at fast. On a passage, do you sleep aft or in the salon? I like how you made Esper your's. You weren't afraid to modify her for your needs. How has the quality of the work performed lived up to your expectations? I too would be bothered by the floor creaking.. but a lot of boats do. Maybe some butyl rubber would stop it?

Good video. Burning plastic effectively with no risk can only be achieved in large incinerators, with control of the combustion and temperature, (high temperature breaks the organic molecules) exhaust gas treatment, filtration for fine particles... These are gigantic installations, they release cleaner air than they consume in the process. But they can only be found in very large cities. Locally, if recycling is not an option in the country, landfill is a better option than throwing plastic in the ocean. I agree with you about metal and glass. Some animals may be trapped in the bottles, better smash as you describe.

@ericechols5806 6 жыл бұрын
I have been looking at sailboats for the past year and it depends on what makes you comfortable. Their 43.5' would be just enough for me alone. But, I have seen couples in 35'rs be happy. I guess it would depend on how much you like the person you are with, and what type of "liveaboard" you are going to be..... my 2¢

You hear so many pro's and con's concerning galley design, whether long, narrow ones like your's is better as opposed to the "L" or square shaped galleys. Do you find your's easier to work in when in relatively rough waters? How inconvenient is it when you're working in the galley and he wants to pass and go forward? Thanks.

I'm on the fence between steel and aluminum. 42-44' enclosed center cockpit, schooner rigged, with bilge keels (so i can tidal park it to scrape the bottom), bow thruster, and a platform just big enough on the stern for a beanbag to sit on while fishing.

I chose steel because I want to sail to Svalbard, Greenland and north of Russia but also to Antarctica once or twice and steel, in case of damage, seems easier to repair because you can just put a plate of Steel on it. 60 - 120ft would be the size I take so I can stay away from any Docks as long as possible (north Russia etc) and have all needed gear (and power Generator etc) on Board in case I have to repair things - it certainly is not a matter of "I want big because big is cool", maybe even a Motorsailer if it's not a two-masted gaff ketch. (I have one in eyesight at the moment but I think it will be already sold when I have the money *sigh*) I've personally don't really know the pros and cons of the different keels because it never mattered to me - my current boats have either a daggerboard or a "half-cut" keel with a daggerboard extension because of the way the lake is (average depth of 4ft).

Trading up vs re-fit. frankly your boat is the most agreeable oyster Ive ever seen at that size, your inputs to the refit made it the perfect live-aboard. but I have not (yet) found any references to the actual cost of that operation? mind me asking what the refit set you back?
