The Simulation Hypothesis, first published by Oxford philosopher/physicist Nick Bostrom, speculates that in the future, our descendants could create computer simulations that would be indistinguishable from reality, and that we may be living in that simulation.
This video is a very high-level overview of the Simulation Hypothesis, here are some links that go much deeper:

I was once a cacti collector. Had hundreds of specimens from all over the world. I was searching for a particular south american cactus and stopped in at a large commercial greenhouse to see what cacti they had. When I walked in, a young man who worked there, who apparently had Down's Syndrome or something similar, came up and motioned me to follow him. We wound our way to the very back of the huge facility where the cacti were and he excitedly pointed to a single specimen of the species I was searching for. I never told him what I was looking for nor could he speak clearly. Mind. Blown.

I went to a record and CD fair looking for Ace's 'How Long' with the brilliant Paul Carrack (he was singing lead vocals, not accompanying me to the record fair). This is a fairly obscure song - it only reached no.20 in the UK in 1974 and this was 16 or 17 years later. I walked up to the first table in this large hall, told the guy on the stand what I was looking for, and he said, 'I think I have it somewhere'. He had several hundred CDs stacked on his trestle tables, yet the first one I pulled out was the song I was looking for. When I went in, was half expecting to draw a blank and leave empty handed after spending perhaps an hour searching at the record fair. Instead I was in and out in under a minute, cd in hand. Whadayareckon, A guardian angel or a glitch in the matrix?

Physical reality is like a boot camp training course for souls but far more sci-fi and other worldly than even Steven King could imagine. Because the being putting you through this course and looking over you, is you yourself. A future self. If you don't have any spiritual or occult knowledge you will scoff at this and laugh. And if you do then you won't laugh but it will be a struggle to believe. Still there it is.

This was SO interesting! My friend Geneva and I experienced a glitch TOGETHER! Geneva was washing dishes and I had my little pup on top of the kitchen island counter putting a belly band (male doggie diaper) on the little fellow. Geneva and I were in typical conversation. Without warning the entire vision of my kitchen shook and blurred like video static. Suddenly my hands were holding nothing but air. Geneva didn’t perceive the blur. In her words, Bentley (with belly band) just vanished from the counter and appeared standing happily on the floor without the belly band! The belly band was found back in the closet where I kept them. I was ecstatic! I felt I was special to experience this unique oddity with a witness. I’ll never forget Geneva’s big eyes and blanched white face. She was terrified! When I suggested that we needed to research our shared experience, she said she never wanted to think or talk about it again. I was so disappointed! The same experience with 2 different reactions...

Best argument I've heard against simulation hypothesis: irrational numbers. If we ever find a termination to an irrational number, then statistically we probably live in a simulation. However, as long as irrational numbers continue to go on forever with no repeating pattern, on irrational number would consume an infinite amount of bits in the simulation programming. Thought that was a clever explanation I would never have come up with.
@minecraftminertime
@minecraftminertime 5 жыл бұрын
That would be assuming that the simulation is similar and has a structure of our human-made computers. If we were in a simulation, we might never reach the end of an irrational number because that would require us to calculate to a level more powerful than the simulation that we run on. We would need to make a computer that's bigger than the universe.
@KaDaJxClonE
@KaDaJxClonE 5 жыл бұрын
Or the simulation could take short cuts in order to minimize the computing power for this function to allocate its resources elsewhere. Perhaps if we could measure the rate of information processing at the same time we run an overwhelmingly intense calculation to see information (entropy) happen at a slower rate. If it did, we could confirm that we are within some sort of device that is limited to a finite amount of processing power. However this is unlikely a fruitful experiment because: The amount of processing power should be incomprehensibly astronomical as it is currently running special and quantum relativity from all observable angles simultaneously.
@KaDaJxClonE
@KaDaJxClonE 5 жыл бұрын
My best guess: quantum interaction is being simulated, or it is the fundamental truth of the universe, we just haven't found the way that it scales up to influence larger structures yet. In time we will; and then futuristic High School physics classes will laugh at their stupid ancestors for not comprehending "the basic concepts of reality". Sadly, this isn't much help since this ignores or doesn't answer why we are here. it just assumes the smallest interaction will scale up and create everything we have through random encounters based on the impossibly exact set-up of the singularity.

The weirdest thing for me is that there is a shortest period of time where we can't measure anything shorter (plank time) and also a shortest length were nothing can be shorter (plank length). This could totally be the pixel size and refresh rate of our simulation.

I had plenty of paranormal experiences in my life. When I was in the 4th grade, i visited a high school with my uncle for cub scouts. I stepped outside and a UFO came down, looked at me in a 45 degree angle and hovered there for a while before disappearing before my friends came outside. I also tend to see things that I can’t explain like a face in a group of trees, things falling over by themselves, voices that can’t be explain, and seeing shadow people before something bad happens. I also don’t dream, but when I do those dreams show a depiction of reality in a different setting. All of which sounds crazy, I know but its been through out my life and I feel like there’s more then just us in this world. I believe that as humans we also tend to go through multi parallel universes that we are unaware of until we realize something has changed. Like knowing that you put a pen in a specific spot at a specific time and when you go back to get it, it isn’t there but in a different spot.

I constantly experience things like your pen story. All. The. Time. Thankfully, I've had witnesses to it enough that I no longer feel like a lunatic. Only one out of body experience, but people and electronics, especially computers and lights, do NOT like me much. I've had multiple lights just explode above me, after being on and working fine for some time, cash registers, cc readers, and video games quite often have to be reset when it's my turn to go, and an outrageous number of computer errors have impacted my life, like one page of a digital file will be missing on the other end, but is always part of the original file, and emails will vanish into thin air when I try to find them to use info in them, and will return to my inbox or saved location about an hour after the need has passed. Oh, and this is a really odd one, but when I go through the body scanners in airports, my lady bits set it over every single time. never had any piercings or tattoos or anything like that, and of course I'm not doing anything that would cause me to be searched on purpose, but here we are. I have to make jokes because it's too weird a thing to understand. lol No one has to convince me that there are glitches, I am a walking, talking glitch in real life, and it sucks. If I ever figure out how to use my powers, I'm going to fix the world, but sadly, no instruction manual yet.

There's not really such a thing as conscious free will. We just think we really wanted to do what we did.

Here's something that happened to me...here goes... I was watching a movie with my husband that I had already seen twice. I didn't realize it before deciding to watch it again, but while we were watching it, I kept waiting for a specific scene in the movie that I wanted him to see. We got through the entire thing with no sign of the scene PLUS the movie had a completely different ending then when I'd previously seen it. I didn't think anything of it at the time figuring maybe there was an alternate ending and they just played that version culminating in the scene that I'd looked for, being edited out to support the ending. To no avail, my husband and I looked everywhere on the internet, to find the answer. Nothing. The next day I wanted to talk to my friends about what I'd experienced and ask if they'd seen the movie, so I planned to say something when we met to have lunch. As I started to try to describe what had happened I found myself unable to remember the movie that this was all about!!! It was like I could feel the men memory still there but there was something blocking it or surrounding it in my brain and wouldn't let me gain access no matter how hard I tried. I called my husband to ask him what movie it was and he couldn't remember either!!! I thought, "there is no way in hell this is happening!! I'll just look on my browser history to check it out and it will be solved." It was then and there that I first started realizing that there is something strange going on. This was almost nine year's ago now. The day was July 22nd my friend Julie's bday we were out celebrating at the time. I still try to remember the movie and the scene it is that has somehow escaped my mind. Til this day there's been absolutely no sign that I'll ever recall it...but I know that I'm not a crazy person. * IF THIS SOUNDS FAMILIAR TO ANYONE IN A WAY THAT A CERTAIN MOVIE HAS A MISSING SCENE THAT BEFORE WHEN YOU WATCHED IT WAS ALWAYS THERE AND AN ENDING DIFFERENT THAN U REMEMBER WITHOUT IT BEING A MOVIE WITH ALTERNATE ENDING LIKE THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT PLZ TELL ME WHAT MOVIE IT IS.*

@@howtowithelizabeth7513 Exactlty what I was thinking. Most likely. I don't think we live in a simulation but a huge multi dimensional universe and being there are so many alternate realities of our own going on at the same time. So what I'm getting at is one of the other dimensions interjects itself into ours from time to time or vice versa. Since I've been getting in to eastern religion and ways to raise your consciousness. I've had so many odd experiences like people on here are explaining that simply can't be coincidence. Especially since I started Lucid dreaming. Exploring my overall consciousness has really been a trip. Like I only experienced the few times I used psychedelics but now I feel more in control of it without drugs.

@Mar M Well to start its havin a bit of foreshadowing ability of certain events. Like when my mother-and-passed away I dreamt a few nights before almost exactly how it happened and what caused. Same with my old 5th grade teacher I couldn't stop thinking about him one day for some reason then he passed the next day. Next just small things like saying something someone was thinking or saying right before they speak it. Lastly I had a Lucid dream about having a son instead of the daughter I have almost like it was an alternate reality I was being shown. Pretty wild...huh? There were other dreams I just should of wrote them down since I cant remember them now lol

I don't know about glitches in a proverbial matrix but I have witnessed a very disturbing event. When I was 19 a friend of mine and I were at a bar unwinding after work. We left a bar (we were underage but my friend's aunt owns the bar), and on our way home the car quits. The transmission was on it's way out for a while at that point, so we weren't surprised. We are in the middle of nowhere. There was nothing but woods on this country road for as far as we could tell. We start walking. The only reason we aren't bummed out or pissed off was because we were dedicated stoners at the time and had a readily available stash on us. So we walk for hours until an van pulls up to us. A guy offers us a ride to his destination and the use of a phone when we get there. We agree and ride to this farm manor where the locals were having a party. There were like 40 or 50 people here and having a gold ole country time. We popped some cold ones and just shot the shit all night and even forgot to make our call for a ride. We both end up passing out. When we woke up, we were in a field. Not 30 feet away was the manor house but it was decrepit. I mean like not been lived in or worked on in decades decrepit. My friend is freaking out like dude I had the weirdest dream about that house. It could not have been his dream unless I suddenly had become telepathic in my sleep and read his mind. I was there too. All the stuff he was talking about matched my memories of the party. We remembered doing the sane stuff. So we walk around the place, determined to find some rational answer. Not only did we fail miserably, but the rabbit hole got deeper. We found a graveyard out back and some of the names of the people we had been introduced to at the party was on the headstones. We also found a memorial thing which told the story of an infuriated man who, angry that his wife had left him for another man, had driven to a party at that house and shot the ex wife, her new man, and many of the friends and family before killing himself. We flip out. Eventually we get to another house and the old lady there told us more of the story while we waited for a ride we called for using her phone. She was a little girl when it had happened almost 70 years prior. She described the people we met in detail. A guy with a limp, a woman who couldn't talk much because of a disease she had had, a guy who told jokes to make a sailor blush, and more. And she described the shooter. The description was a perfect match to the guy who had given us a ride to the party in the first place. I do not much believe in ooga booga stuff and I am not saying this experience is any one thing or another. But we both distinctly experienced it and neither of us can explain it. Before anyone chocks the whole thing up to very good weed, he had long depleted our supply and sobered up in the long miserable walk before the guy pulled up in the van. I really really really wish the answer were something as simple and normal as that.

It's crazy you mentioned some of the dreams. I had this happen one time. I had a dream about my ex-wife cheating on me. I had seen this guy one time in a crowded restraunt that she worked at and just had this overwhelming feeling that he was a threat somehow. Never seen or met him before and he wasn't even her customer so I couldn't explain it. Then a couple weeks later she introduced him at a bar and I just knew I didn't like him at all for no good reason at all. Then after a week or 2 I had a dream that I caught her with him at another bar. Now this is the really crazy part. In my dream they were in a bar I had never been in before but the layout was somehow familiar and it was named a bar that we normally went to. Then I woke up and noticed she had been off work for over 2 hours and still hadn't made it home. So I called her job and they told me she left with a co worker and went to the bar that I knew the name of in my dream. Well this kinda freaked me out so I went to that bar to see if she was there but it was closed for the night. On my way back home I took a different route and saw this new bar that had just reopened and her friends car was there so I walked in and this place was exactly like the one in my dream all the way to the placement of the restrooms the people that were there everything. Her and this guy I dreamt about were even at the same pool table that I saw in the dream. She kept telling me I was overreacting she couldn't understand why it had bothered me so much but after a week she ended up leaving me and went to a different state with the same guy. I don't know. Maybe by my reaction I actually willed things into reality but never could shake how strange the whole thing was

I was walking into a town with my ex and suddenly I had this awful feeling about his new girlfriend. I told him about it and he wanted to know more but it was really fleeting; so all I could say was it was a really bad feeling but it had gone now and I had no idea. Anyway he married her and ended up drinking himself to death in his early forties. I wondered about the bad vibe a lot after he died.

Talking of 'glitches in the Matrix'... Some years ago, when I lived in an old (18th Century) house in London, which was originally part of a grand estate from which the main house had long since been demolished, I experienced an inexplicable event which, to this day, I'm at a loss to explain. The house often felt strange and unnerving, even during the day. I had an electric hand mixer in a cupboard, in the kitchen, which would have originally been situated in an old wash-house which was used as the estate laundry. The mixer was fairly new and had performed flawlessly since I purchased it. One day I took the mixer out of the cupboard, where it had been since its previous unremarkable use. When I attempted to insert the removable whisk attachments into their sockets on the base of the device only one would fit as the second one couldn't be inserted without fouling the first. I tried swapping the attachments, putting both in either place and rotating both of them multiple times without success. Eventually, I concluded that the only way to remedy the situation was to dismantle the mixer and inspect the mechanism. I am an engineer, so am familiar with such simple mechanisms and the types of material used in their manufacture. On removing the cover of the mixer it was evident that there was nothing broken or damaged that would explain the fault. I soon concluded that the only way to fix the problem was to remove a metal plate holding the two nylon rotating gears (into which the attachments were inserted) in place and rotate one of them to enable the whisk attachments to line up once more. I inspected the two nylon gears carefully and there were no signs of either of them having skipped in the slightest. The metal spindle of the motor, which had been machined into a driving worm gear was, similarly, entirely intact. The backlash of the gears was minimal and with the metal retaining bracket in place there was no conceivable way either of the nylon gears could have moved independently without significant damage, which was not the case. From that day onward the mixer has worked flawlessly, as it did before this incident, and I am at a loss to explain how it happened.

My uncle had a recurring dream of this shadowy figure that crawled through his window and stared at him at the end of his bed when he was a young teenager. He would wake up terrified in a mad sweat and the man was gone. This happened every night for months. My grandparents eventually called a priest in to cast out evil spirits and bless the home. The dream still continued. Finally one night before bed my uncle drew a portrait of the man in as best detail as he could, he's a very good artist, to see if anyone would recognize him. He went to bed after drawing it that night and fell into the most peaceful sleep. He woke up for the first time in months without having that dream. After he got out of bed he went to his desk to get the portrait to show my grandparents and the drawing was gone. Since then he's never had that dream again. Not really about the simulation theory, just a interesting story that gives me goose bumps everytime I think of it. Was this just his mind messing with him or was there a ghost type figure who needed to be validated in some way. If it was his mind playing tricks where did the portrait go? This world is filled with so many unknowns that nearly everything and anything could be possible.

The part where you said that things are only real once we look at it is scary to me. Most video games will only load things that you can see so you lag less. It corresponds to this a little and maybe one day, if we really are in a simulation, it will abruptly end because it can't "render" everything and just fails.

Youre not thinking out far enough. How long before a game will be able to save it's state in something, blockchain, and crash but repair itself? 15 years? maybe much sooner. As something within the system you wouldn't even know. You'd temporarily pause, and then continue knowing none the less.

I had a boyfriend once. Thought he was the one. We broke up. Flash forward 18 years. I had a pool table but moved and didn't have room for it. For some reason, I held onto the balls. Had a friend with a two year old who would always throw them out into my yard. We would always go and collect them but three of the balls were never found, we assumed they had made it to the creek and been washed away. Moving on... I found my long lost beau after 18 years apart. We got back together. When we moved in together, he had some random pool balls. When I asked about them, he told me while doing yardwork at an old house, he found them burried in the yard. He kept digging but there were only the three. He wasn't sure why, but he hung onto them. They were the three I was missing. Making them, together, a compete set.

Like I'm watching the world through someone else's eyes. Often showing things and places I've never seen or experienced. I've talked to few people about this and once I described a street that an American friend used to live on. Down to the corner shop and what colour the houses were. I was obviously a bit freaked out when she told me that. Or another time I saw a moment at a place I worked at, a couple months later the same scenario actually happened. Dunno if it's evidence of the simulation hypothesis, but it's a cool thing to go to sleep wondering what part of the world I'll see that night.

one time when I was 12 I was up at 3am alone at my computer and I was trying to take a photo of my desktop image with my mom's point and shoot camera, It was a photo of the Matrix movie poster with Harry potter characters heads photoshopped over their heads, and when I took a few photos of it trying to get a good image and then I took one more and I looked at the image on the camera review screen and all of the heads and faces(and only the heads) on the image were covered in what I can only describe as green plasma or goopy looking stuff, it scared my so much I instantly deleted the image and ran into my bedroom... I never stayed up late again for a long time.... And the thing has also happened to me where one time I had a dream about a having a specific conversation with my friend while standing in a specific place and then I woke up for the day and vividly remembered the dream and what my friend had said to me in the dream, then that afternoon I happened to be talking to that friend and she started saying word for word what I had dreamt in my dream, also the scene in my dream was exactly the same.... It actually really shocked me and I was kind of weirded out for the rest of the day...

Had this experience too and wonder if it's not more explainable as a processing error. Definitely gives me chills when it happens. Like when I was ten I had a dream I was sitting on playground talking to my friend and then weeks later exact scene plays out even my focus on this plant and then as my friend was starting to speak I almost panicked trying to tell her what she was going to say and that I'd seen it. That one somehow is the most memorable for me though I still have them time to time.

As a lifelong gamer it hasn't escaped me that the laws of physics, speed of light etc. would be a good way of keeping us within a desired environment. Similar to the way in which game developers place obstacles in the way, preventing the player from exploring beyond the immediate game environment. Alternate realities could therefore be nothing more than multiple variations of the same simulation. Lets face it. 100 people can play the same game but each play in their own way and slightly different from everyone else.

The simulation theory also makes me think of free will. It's possible the choices we make every single day were never our own decisions. Here's an example. Say I decided I wanted a cup of coffee. If something influenced me to want coffee, like in a game of the Sims, I would believe it was my decision to want coffee but the reality is that it was never my decision.

Does free will even exist?
@thomasmaughan4798
@thomasmaughan4798 4 жыл бұрын
@@murilokleine It does and it doesn't; depending on what you or anyone thinks it is. You can define it in a way that it doesn't exist in the real world, sort of like the square root of a negative number. Generally speaking that definition is useless and stupid; "free will" ought to mean something in the real world. As you can see, some people use a particular definition as an excuse for taking no personal responsibility in their lives.
@murilokleine
@murilokleine 4 жыл бұрын
@@thomasmaughan4798 Both the presence or the absence of idea of free will can lead to nihilism, I don't think it makes it less or more real, though. Make it about life or death, is the choice a product of free will or is it a consequence of the path your life has taken? Isn't responsibility the same as caring to the point of taking action? Can one choose what to care about? Do we choose to stop or start caring? It all seems to be about what interests people -- not necessarily in a good or in a bad way -- and what gets them going or not, meaning, it's not about free will at all, it's about who we are.

Not going to lie, I’m jelly of the original Creator’s of whatever level of simulation we are currently in... Are you moral inside a game with those virtual npc's? I guess that what i'm trying to say is that from the point of view of whomever made the simulation (if this is a simulation) we might just be npc's. toys with whom he/she/it can do whatever he/she/it pleases that included torturing them or subjecting them to a natural disaster... sadly...

sic semper tyrannus, well, pain, death, sacrifice, and suffering is the base of all ancient religions. Without those conditions no one could ever experience love. If everything was just joy and pleasure no one would give a fuck about anyone, probably not even themselves. In terms of Judeo-Christian religions that's why anything involving joy and pleasure without the counterpart correlates with Satan. Anything involving pain and suffering also relates to Satan. It's only when both occur, pain and joy, that you can relate them to what's "good", aka day-night, Sun-Moon, Adam-Eve, Alpha-Omega, beginning-end, etc.

I wrote a short story (published on Amazon) that was inspired by a paranormal experience I had when I was little. I was about seven or eight, when I woke up one morning with the strong feeling it was my first day of life. I could remember the day before, my family, my name, how to talk, and everything I knew before, so I certainly didn’t act like a newborn. And yet, for about an hour after waking up that day, it really felt like I was brand new. A glitch in the matrix?

Before we got there, my buddy and I went up into the trees quick to take a leak. Where I would usually just whip it out in the first place out of sight, I found myself going around from spot to spot until I knew It was right. Oddly enough, my friend apparently did the same thing. Neither of us could explain why and just laughed about it. Damn, I miss those days...

There's this big house nearby with two huge oaks beside it. When I was like 10, I went outside at night, stood a good 20 meters in front of it and saw the full moon behind the house, spanning from one oak to the other, bigger than the house itsself. Normally it would of couse only be as big as the chimney. It was like a visual glitch, like the "moon radius" variable had one 0 too many. I still distinctly remember the image and telling my parents about it the next morning, especially when looking at the house today. Sadly I was really scared and went back inside immediately, also phones didn't have cameras back then, so I am left with only the memory.
