Something that's also a benefit of digicams over phones I think it's that people are less afraid of it when you aim one at them. Like, if you aim a phone at someone there's often the anxiety that "oh no, this person is going to post this on the internet to make fun of me" or "this person is stalking me" because phones are just so immediately adjacent to social media/how we communicate, but I think using a digicam just looks so silly (in a good way) and "out there" that it puts people at ease I think? Like, "oh they're just experimenting with a thrifted item/something they found in their grandma's house". It makes you way less intimidating and sus on the streets, which is a huge benefit for candid street pics. Idk, what are your thoughts on this? As someone with severe anxiety I'd definitely be way less spooked by a digicam shooter than a phone shooter haha.

Yea true very true I’m so bad in losing photos in my phones like phones die or stopped working I lost many photos,videos, got into photography a while back and ordered a digital kodak easyshare. While I save for a good slr film camera and film hopefully this will make it worthwhile. I’m sure I’ll get confident in pointing it in places

Also these old digicams give you the same excitement when you see the photos because the LCD preview is usually so terrible. Plus the sensors and low megapixel is a whole new look. All of a sudden it is fun to take photos as an experiment just to see how the camera will render them. It's the surprise of film, but you don't have to pay and wait for a roll to get processesed.

Yay digicams! My fav benefit is that when you point a goofy little champagne colored digicam at someone their reaction is better than any other type of camera. Nobody ever gets nervous or takes it seriously. Absolutely the best for candid shots. I love my old Coolpix camera for this reason primarily.

CMOS overtook CCD in image quality a long time ago. But for a while before that, CCDs were the king of dynamic range.

Been a professional photographer for 18 years and I’m loving getting back into these older CCD sensors. However, like you mentioned, it’s little effort using a point and shoot and they end up looking like snapshots instead of photographs. If you want to scratch that filmic itch with a CCD sensor camera, I’d suggest the older Nikon and Fuji DSLRs. You will get that great filmic look but you are more engaged rather than using a point and shoot. If you don’t want to mess with larger cameras and lenses but still want that look, I’d look at the upper end of Canon Powershot and Nikon Coolpix cameras. Fixed lenses, smaller footprint and more point and shoot style but you still retain DSLR features and full control over your settings. I paid under $100 for my Nikon Coolpix P7100, same for my Canon Powershot G11. Fun little cameras.

Wait, how do you get "that filmic look" with a low end camera that looks more digital than current digital camera because of the limited dynamic range, especially in the highlights?
@michaelbell75

@@caleidoo Huh? Limited dynamic range is exactly what film is. It's super limited. These cameras I and the person who replied to me listed are not "low end" they are just older technology.

As far as DSLRs, Pentax released similar cameras, K10D with a 10MP CCD, K20D with a 14MP CMOS; same cameras (slightly different styling, different RAW format container or minor firmware features) are available as Samsung GX10/GX20. Would you say there is much difference between the look of the pics they make between the CCD and CMOS version, and what differences should i expect? I'm sort of tempted by the CMOS version of these cameras.

Should i get a nikon d50 or d200? Or a PowerShot g3; 5; 6; 9? I dont mind having another dslr, and don't mind trying a digicam. Ik the d50 will have 6 mp, and some of the g ones 5 mp. When i upload my pics, i want others to think i took pics on a actual film camera. Im confident in my shooting abilities and editing skills, but getting something where sooc raw image needs very litlte editing is for me. So which camera from the ones i mentioned? I shoot all types of photography except portraits

Another great video Lucy! I stumbled on Ali’s channel some time ago, but your interview sealed the deal and I’m now a subscriber and officially obsessed with the CCD sensor. I knew I’d have to go back to shooting more digital, but knowing there’s an option for something kind of in the middle is amazing.

I'm in the process of getting it up and running and intend to do some out and about shooting to see what transpires. The idea of creating a 'zine or a small book of images really appeals to me. My favorite digicam is a 4MP Nikon that we got as a backup camera for a trip to China in 2006. It was so easy to always have with me that I took some of my favorite photos of the trip with it. Now I use it occasionally for street photography. So unnoticable compared to when I have my M5. And the colors are wonderfully vibrant.

One thing that I've really enjoyed about old digicams, is that by carrying a basic usb c sd card reader, you can easily share your images while out taking them. In some ways it's almost easier than with a modern camera and having to rely on wifi or Bluetooth, and an app.

Damn, didnt even think about that anymore. I got into those vintage CCD cams as i found my old Sony P100 point and shoot from 2004, my first camera. Luckily we can do it that easy with any SD card as i do it with my "proper" camera. I got since then only old Sonys with memory stick (and the hassle of a dedicated card reader for Sony MS or proprietary data cable) so i rely on here and then copying down the files. I completely forgot, the actual vintage CCD camera i use has already SD card slot, yet i read them via PC and USB cable. I got the Sony W830 recently and really love this tiny camera. super small, 25-200mm optical zoom "thing". Its hard to call it a camera, basically the SMALLEST camera i ever had in my hands (excluding action cams, this Insta 360 etc)

I have family pics starting from 2000, all shot on digicams…maybe I should get them out! I took lots of really nice pics with them back in the day, and they are still on my hard drives! I often have my 4 year old granddaughter shoot with my waterproof, shock resistant camera …way less stressful! I still have a CCD Nikon DSLR….might combo that with my vintage Nikkor AIS glass to see the effect?

It feels like the main reason we need Digicams is for KZfaq creators to make their clickbait videos based on trends (the hidden gems that are not so hidden anymore...). Compact point and shoot cameras with an agressive jpg rendering? It is exactly what a smartphone can do. And that is exactly why the Digicams fell out of favour, because we all have one in our pockets. You want a proper camera but the old school look? Any CMOS sensor camera with built in "creative filters" or shooting RAW then applying specific profiles will do the trick. The trend of "get a cheap camera" is getting so omnipresent than the cheap factor disappears and the lack of quality stays. In the end it leads to people selling you for big money, the distorted perception of an era most haven't even lived. Like all vintage trends.
@TeamGeist06

I like using digicams and old tech in general but I kinda agree with some of what you said. The trend is getting ridiculous with people trying to sell low res digicams used for almost as much as they cost when they were new. If you want the film look then use a film camera, also ive seen people take pictures with these digicams and then EDIT the picture to make it seem more retro. Whats the point of editing these old digicam photos when you could take a pic with your phone and apply a retro filter. Gheez.

Totally agree. I recently got a Sony DSC-S40 (I wanted to buy one back in the day but I was a broke teenager), and so far it's been great. Yes, the stabilization is not the best, the settings might be limiting, but it's a great option for when I go for a walk and I find an interesting place/scene, it makes you play with the lighting, composition, and it's a good middle ground between a pro camera and a smartphone. I'm definitely getting an older digicam, or a Sony Ericsson CyberShot smartphone from back in the day (I got a k850 a few years ago, but I broke it when I took it for a run to use as an MP3 player and fell on it. I'll live with regret for my whole life). EDIT: And YES, Salvation Army thrift stores and Facebook Marketplace are a go-to place when looking for almost anything vintage/retro. At least here in Argentina, it's the only place where you can find cool things at good prices that hasn't already been 'gentrified', if you know what I mean.

Love this! I have definitely been in the CCD rabbit hole lately and fortunately the cameras are still inexpensive. And the comments about getting through a roll of film hit me hard I have 3 cameras with half shot rolls in them. I was like I guess I'll at least see if this camera works. Months later still have 10 frames left.

I recently bought a couple of Canon IXUS cameras, the IXUS 90 (SD790), IXUS 85 (SD770) and IXUS 40 (SD300), because to my eyes these are design classics. Turns out they take great pictures as well. All have the CCD sensor type. But honestly I don't think the colors are more natural nor do I think these JPG images have a more filmic look than JPG's I have taken with my Fujifilm X100s and images I have seen taken with current cameras. ("Natural" is very subjective. The somewhat colder JPGs of my Sony RX100 IV taken in bright daylight appear to be more natural and honest to me, in many cases. At other moments I perceive them as clinical and digital. Reality or perception of reality? Taking shots at evening in low light, with light bulbs on, images taken with a poor auto white balance are warmer, have more reddish or yellow cast. In many cases (probably most cases) this looks more natural to me than with the perfect auto white balance of my iPhone, that renders the image like it it is taken in bright daylight)

Excellent video, watched it because I've been given a bunch of old digicams lately, probably have a dozen now lol. One particular digicam I've been using lately is a Sony Cybershot DSC-P72 (made in 2003) which is 3.2MP, had to order a 2nd hand Sony memory stick to use it. Anyhow been testing it to see how well it holds up for 2023 standards in image quality, have to say some shots it shows its age but other shots it still holds up well enough, depending on the subject and lighting conditions, I want to feature at least one shot at my local camera club meeting and surprise them that I used a 20 year old digicam instead of a 12-24MP DSLR, I found a number of shots I think I can fudge it with Topaz Gigapixel to look displayable on a 4K monitor. Anyhow I'm into old analog and early digital tech and got a kick out of using the Cybershot. Speaking of early digicams my first digicam was an eBino binocular camera I got in 2004/05 which gave rather gritty low res looking images, then in 2005 I had the Nokia 6230 phone (my 1st mobile phone) which gave compressed 0.3MP 640x480 images that look like oil paintings and it had this wickedly cool looking ring like lens effect when pointed to the sun, the video quality of it is so woefully crap 128x96 resolution everything is barely to not even recognizable to watch lol, if you're also into old phone cameras and get your hands on one of those 6230s or similar please do a video on it.

So funny. I posted my first digicam shots on my digital Instagram account yesterday. I've been bringing my very first digital camera from my younger days, the Canon PowerShot S50 with me as my daily carry this week, and yesterday I got some shots after a rain shower on the way home from work. I also had my Canon EOS 300v with a few frames left on a roll of Ektar from my vacation, so the red berries and leaves, I shot was the perfect subject, I thought. I already shoot with a few DSLR cameras with modern big sensors, and what immediately became clear was how much easier it was for my computer to deal with the 5mp raw files compared to 20-30mp raw files from my DSLR cameras. In the past I have also used another digicam (my second digital camera) to practice shooting B&W before putting B&W film in one of my film cameras.

Some of my coolest photos, and most sold images came from using my Sony Cybershot DSC-S650 7.2mp camera. Close up shots can be made from mere inches from the subject, and the ccd sensor does render images less sterile looking than modern high mp cameras. I paid $80 new on sale in 2008 I believe, and it lasted unti a couple of years ago when I stopped using it because a hair somehow got inside and showed up in all the images. They are everywhere at thrift stores for a few bucks.

That's a very good point! The Canon A-series Powershots are descent little cameras that take AA batteries, and many have manual controls as well. A good source for rechargable AAs, are LADA batteries from IKEA (they're actually rebranded Sanyo Eneloops). One thing to to look out for on many of these older cameras, is that they are not SD HC compatible. You'll need to find an SD card that's no larger than 2GB. I have one camera that runs 1 GB microSD card with an adapter.

Film is what got me into enjoying photography, before then I hadn't been interested as my experience with photography had been with digicams which my family would always bring out on Christmas, birthdays etc. and interrupt everything. The time I got to borrow the family camera, a bronze coloured Ricoh Caplio R4, for a school trip I felt compelled to take photos of just about everything which quickly became annoying and was entirely pointless, I've never looked at any of those photos to this day. However after realising that photography was more than just bad posed family photos I've started using a digicam for photos I'm not sure are gonna turn out or want instant feedback. We still have the Caplio R4, it's been a bit neglected as of late as it only works with windows XP which is a shame coz it's my favourite digicam to use. It's a nice size, not too small like my aunt's old one which I dropped coz it was so tiny and fiddly and while it can be slow to focus it's better than the camera we bought to replace it which struggles to focus and the battery goes flat very quickly. I think I'll take it out more or at the very least have it as a back up camera for when I run out of film.

I'm curious how many of your film-shooting viewers don't also own a modern DSLR or Mirrorless camera. I collect, repair, and regularly use film cameras, and I own several digicams now. It's out of a love for photography that I've gone down this route - a love I discovered with more modern DSLRs and mirrorless cameras. At 33 years old, I would be surprised if that wasn't a common progression for many of your viewers as well.

The issue with digicams is the sensor size. Most of them have 1/2.3 inch sensors which is the same as most phones. Another issue is the lack of creative control. I think, for a bit more money, I'd rather have an old mirrorless like the Olympus E-P1 or even older DSLRs that can be had for next to nothing.

I remember that many Canons would come with a 16 meg SD card out of the box. You'd get maybe 8 shot on the card!

Canon has lots of cameras that take really good pictures that only cost 10 or 20 bucks or so at a thrift store. I probably had 30 or more of them at one time. They have great colors they look more like film the sweet spot is usually between about 4 and 7 megapixels those cameras are really good. Most of the other cameras are not very good they don't get good colors the pictures are over sharpened they just don't look near as good. But the only way to really tell how good a lot of these cameras are is if you actually make a print from the photos. I've made thousands of prints from both digital and film cameras I don't think you can really tell on Instagram or Facebook how good a camera is especially if you are looking on a smartphone.

I wouldnt personally bother. For just alittle bit more you can get a more dslr which allows more out of each shot. Theres a reason the best shots are rarely done on compacts

I want to enter this world of digital cameras and that nostalgic aspect, I saw a nikon easyshare z650 (6mpx) from 2006 with cdd at a good price, what do you think? It also has manual mode that allows you to play a lot

Hi Sanjat, we had to get an adapter for the memory stick we had as it was the wrong type I think there's 3 different types it was really confusing knowing which one I needed. This one is a 1gig version which is obviously heaps for a low res camera. You should check out Ali's Discord group those guys would be able to answer questions like this better than I can. Thanks for watching lovely.

I've owned a number of Canons over the years. You've got a good camera. You've got a high resolution CCD, with image stabilization, and support for high capacity memory cards. One thing I've had fun with for changing the tone on photos is to deliberately mess with the white balance. When you manually calibrate the white balance, instead of using a white card, use something that has a strong color on it.

It's not the same. A camera is a camera, a phone has a camera but you can do all.kinda things with it also that will distract you from just taking photos. Plus de fact that a digicam have an optical zoom as opposed to the ugly digital zoom smartphones have.

What Sonys i can recommend: P100 (2004): sadly only 5,1MP, but superior build quality compared to any newer small Cybershot. Magnesium/Aluminium alloy case and higher quality buttons on the back including the zoom buttons. P200 (2005): 7,2MP, noticable faster UI, focussing and processing, but the 7.2MP are not much better/detailed than 5.1. Biggest issue with this camera: ALL PLASTIC. I worked/disassembled P100 and P200... P200 is fragile/cheap as hell, P100 internals are protected by a tank of a case! W800 and W830, my newest toys i worked on, W800 slighty better in low light (faster lens), W830 8x optical zoom for 25-200mm (AWESOME!) Initally i wanted to sell P200, W800 and W830. Now im keeping the W830, great little camera and the 25-200mm are just hilarious in a package smaller than a cigarette box.
