My journey to becoming an attending physician has not been straightforward. I'd argue that no one's journey to adulthood really is. But that being said, with how much social media highlights all of the happy, bright things in life, it can be easy to forget that all of us stumble sometimes. All of us fail or receive rejections.
In this video, I share 5 rejections/failures that I encountered during my journey to becoming a doctor. They include:
➣ A toxic letter of recommendation that led to limited options for transferring colleges
➣ Almost 20 rejections from medical schools I applied to
➣ Failing a medical school examination
➣ Failing to be elected into a position I cared a lot about
➣ Being rejected from an administrative fellowship
There's a lot to learn from these life experiences... with each item I go into what I learned, too.
I'd love to hear your thoughts on the video in the comments below!

Fourth-year medical student here who didn't match this year, and will be reapplying into anesthesiology this fall! So excited to pursue this amazing field! Thanks for sharing the reality of medicine and how the road can be long and winding for some. Hopefully, I'll be joining the field of anesthesia next year!

I just got my score back from the MCAT. And I am super disappointed with my score. So def feel the failure aspect.

You're not a failure! It's just another opportunity to identify ways that you can improve for the future. In a few years, you'll look back at this moment and realize that these "failures" or bumps in the road are learning opportunities and turning points in our lives. Good luck on your journey!

I didn't watch the entire video yet but I dont believe the professor sabotaged you. It is up to the letter of recommendation requester to ask for a STRONG letter of rec. The professor might not have known you needed a strong letter just to transfer so they wrote what they probably thought was good enough. EDIT: It was a good video overall :)

Thank you for your comment! I actually disagree about a professor not knowing that I needed a strong letter; I believe that it is the job of the letter-writer to be honest about their opinion of you as a student/applicant. I was young and naive at the time so in a way, I was relying on the mentorship/guidance of my professors/mentors to help me succeed. I personally would *never* write a lukewarm letter for a candidate - instead, if I didn't feel like I could write a strong letter, I would decline to write one. I want to see people succeed and it's possible that an individual just didn't show me their "best self" when we worked together, but that doesn't mean that they didn't excel with someone else that could be better suited to writing a letter! Either way, I appreciate your comment and watching the video!
