I knew it was the O-rings in my filter housing that were leaking, but your idea to "rob" them from a coupler was brilliant! These sizes are not included in the typical 30ish-piece O-ring assortments. I was surprised to see just how bad the old O-rings were, considering that they're exposed to nothing more harsh than air and water (and there's no chlorine in my water; I'm on a well.)

This was amazing. I was stumped and didn't want to pay nearly $100 bucks over a couple o rings. Then I broke a retaining clip and figured I was up the creek. This was a perfect fix. Thanks for sharing!

Awesome tip!! Lowe's carries that part $6.28 vs. a whole new filter holder for $70. The o-rings I have in my tool kit would not work, their diameter was too thin. These were thicker walled and just what I needed. No more leaking from those lines now. Thank You for posting this.

Hahaha! This mysterious stranger has helped me be able to fix my mysterious water leak that has mystified me for over a decade. It would appear and then wouldn’t appear again for years or months. Once the water inlet tube from the water supply line that went into the water inlet valve/selinoid leaked so I replaced that. This time it took me a lot longer to trace it down. I studied the parts supply list and watched many videos over several weeks. Ran different tests and finically caught it in action, but needed a solution, other than calling an appliance repair person because the last one I called couldn’t find it or the cause of the leak in my dishwasher, which turned out to be the door gasket. So thank you for this video!

FOR ANYONE THAT IS HAVING A WEIRD PROBLEM WITH THE 5/16 O-RING NOT FITTING CORRECTLY.... The old O-RING might be colored white so it blends in. Use something to grab around and lift it out. Trust me it blends in if it's white. Took my dad and I forever to realize the old O-RING is colored white to match the housing.

You just saved me $75+ and made me look like a hero to my wife, which is priceless!!! THANK YOU for posting this. I never comment, but this was AWESOME and why the internet sometimes is the BEST thing... Thank You for sharing. I got the same Sharkbite 5/16-in Push-to-Connect x 1/4-in Push-to-Connect coupling (#835034), which was GREAT to help make the process easier. Everyone should try this fix before spending all the $$ for a new filter housing. Again, it worked for me, and I wanted to say Thank You to the author 97krmduke. You're definitely paying it forward in life, and if you get a Millbrae, CA, I have a cold beer or glass of wine waiting for you at my shop!!! Cheers.

Thank you for sharing this. It was a life saver or at least a money saver. I have several kits of various sizes of o-rings but none of the o-rings would fit. I went and bought the suggested coupler and it had the parts I needed to fix the leak. The only thing is that in 3 years the price went from 5.00 to 10.00 for the coupler thanks to inflation.

The o-rings and retaining clips are also the same as on the inlet water valve. Thank you this saved me. After an unrelated water line repair needing to disconnect the filter, the rings were leaking all over the place. I had reused the retaining clip that I broke from the inlet valve. Worked great, back in business, thank you!

This was a great tip . TY. My filter housing wound up having a crack so I did have to replace that but in jockeying around I noticed the water inlet valve was starting to leak. I figured its same thing just at the other end. Worked like a charm and the water inlet valve is more than twice as much as the water filter housing. I had a leak in two but replaced all three o-rings while I was back there just in case. ....so I needed and additional 1/4 o-ring. I just bought the straight 5/16-5/16 coupling and a tee 1/4-1/4-1/4. That way i had one extra of each. Thanks again.

Thank you! The water stopped flowing on mine because the old push to connect tabs had broken off and clogged the flow. I cleared them and put two new connectors in exactly as you described and it worked perfectly! No issues going on a month and saved me the 60 dollars for a new one. Much appreciated!

Helpful video. The suggested Shark Bite part was the right one for our KitchenAid KFFS20EYMS00 fridge. However, it turns out that wasn't where our leak was coming from. I couldn't find the part at local hardware big box stores. Amazon had one for $20CAD. Successfully replaced the o-rings as shown in video. Found and removed two o-rings in each side but only replaced one. O-rings weren't in bad shape so I wasn't optimistic that they were the problem. Filter housing still leaked. Then I realized I could run the water without any filter installed. Always assumed there wasn't a bypass and never tried until now. Duh moment. Leaking stopped without the filter so I knew the problem was a crappy Amazon filter all along. Ordered a different brand of filter and so far no leaking. Still, very cool video.

How did you run it without a filter? I read you could do that but when I removed the water filter, a lot more water leaked on the floor. I suspected I might have a crappy water filter too so ordered one and subscribed to the SearsPartsDirect website, but they are expensive. And I think the box said something about containing arsenic!? Anyway, while I was waiting for my filter, I turned the ice maker on again and kept an eye on it so when the water leak appeared I could track it down. The water outlet tube from the water filter housing was dripping and missing the drain pan. Or the drain pan has a lot in it. I haven’t gotten that far yet.

Thank you!!! You’ve saved my marriage. I had a new filter that looked exactly like the one I needed but wouldn’t twist in. My husband thought I’d damaged the filter housing because it wouldn’t stop dripping. (I think evaporation had been faster than an existing drip). We had already had 2 major problems with a washing machine and my car’s A/C before we left on vacation. Thank you for the inexpensive and quick fix!!!

Holy buckets, I have had some good YT helps, but this was THE BEST! Holding up the package of the Shark Bite coupling gave me all the information I needed. After trying my local hardware stores, a search by the Shark Bite part Number 835034 showed that Lowe’s had 4 of them in stock in Aisle 42, Bay 13 for $6.98. The replacement filter housing on Sears Parts Direct was $70.00 plus shipping.

A big thank you. I was sure the filter housing needed replacing but am glad I saw your video. I followed your directions and the leak is gone! One comment, not about your fix but about getting the filter out to replace the o-rings. All the fix-it videos make removing the filter housing look like a simple two-bolt removal. My KitchenAid has a plate along the bottom front that would necessitate removing the doors in order to pull the filter housing out the front. Fortunately, I was able to fish it out the backside to replace the o-rings. Again - thanks!

Just a quick follow-up. In my case it turned out that the leak was coming from inside the housing - where the filter should have formed a water-tight seal, there was a crack. Had to replace the whole housing but I would always try this fix first before buying a new housing..

I love that you fished it out from the back! A friend of mine and I had to do a similar thing on a Delta Select/Bizmo(?) water faucet handle for a sink. The ceramic cover was supposed to just screw off but it had come unglued from the metal thing so we had to go under the sink, disconnect it from the water supply and push it up through the counter to get it off to get to the seats and springs. It was a lot of trouble, but we fixed it.

Great tip! I wish I'd seen your video before sourcing the O-rings, because this Sharkbite 5/16-in Push-to-Connect x 1/4-in Push-to-Connect coupling (#835034) had the all O-rings AND plastic push-in retainer clips needed to repair the 1/4" & 5/16" lines on the filter housing. It turns out I had to buy it anyway as one of my old retainer clips broke. Also, if the end of the hoses are rough like mine were, there's enough extra hose to clip off a little, so you have a smooth end inside the connection.

Thx for sharing. Great eye recognizing that those fittings were the same as Sharkbites. I used your method and it worked like a champ. Sharkbite couplings are available at any of the home improvement stores on the weekend especially. The only way this repair would've been any cheaper if you can find suitable O-Rings in the home improvement stores. Either way it saves a lot of money. I saw a couple of KZfaqrs had tried your method and were successful. They even blamed, I mean cited, your video. Hahaha. Again, thx for sharing. I hope my testimony encourages others to use your method because it works.

Thank you for this video & fix. I was able to fix my leaking 18 year old Kenmore refrigerator for $10. I bought an Amazon alternative (other than Sharkbite) that offered 5 adapters in a pack, I wanted extra pieces after your comment "... try not to break this one." ... and to have a stash on hand in case the other push-to-fit connections ... for the valves to the ice maker and water dispenser ... failed in the future. And thanks to other commenters who noted that the 5/16 inch side of the housing could have a hard-to-see WHITE O ring. Mine did. But the repair was easy, cheap and effective.

I want to tell you that in my case this repair DID NOT work so the problem must be in the housing itself so instead of spending $8 now i will have to spend about $ 90 I noticed that the larger o ring was missing from my filter housing and I thought for sure that was the issue but it still leaks like a sieve. Real bummer 😒

You probably didn't notice the larger o-ring was white and hard to see. I thought mine was missing at first too. If you put a second o-ring on top of the original white one it will leak.

The information on filter construction although interesting, completely misses the point: is a particular filter working on a particular water supply after a certain amount of time. The ONLY way to tell that is by actually testing the water coming out of it. Rather it's OEM or aftermarket, one has test the output for things of concern such as Ar, Pb, Fe, Cl, etc. Without that discussion, this just seems like a marketing video.
