The best way to check a used AUTOMATIC transmission is to reverse up a hill (5-10% gradient) and see if it slips on you or makes a rumbling sound. The reverse is usually the most under-engineered components to save money, but it shows you the preview of what is to come for your low (highest speeds, most used) gears later on.

@STho205
@STho205 5 жыл бұрын
Nima Nejad. Hard to find them "cheap" considering they are 25 year old econoboxes that are sooooooooooo dependable, they were mostly ignored on service after ten years. They have been so hyped as the most dependable car ever, most people want 2500 ++ even if they are dented up beaters with rotted away paint, worn and torn seats, smoky and mildew smells, bald tires... A 94 Camry for $1200 is fine, new seat covers or junkyard seats, tires, minor top end work,and even a cheap macco paint job would get you a $2100 car that is better than a recent used money pit. You have to get it with room in your budget to spend at least $500 the first year shaking out the problems of the last owner. I just went through this search for my daughters first college commuter. First target was early 90s Camry/Corolla. Nah, overpriced and gross is all I found. Next were Civics. Similar. Eventually found a clean car 11 years old for $2000, but I knew it needed plugs, some coils, valve cover gasket. $500 later i got a good, tuned, safe $2500 car with 110k miles that should be good for 2-4 years. Finish price must be less than $1100/year or you may as well buy late model (or a new loss leader small S car) from a dealer. 1st owner does all maintenance under warranty 2nd owner does half the needed maintenance Auction then washes the car 3rd owner does 1/4 the needed maintenance Auction then washes the car again 4th owner buys on time and gets repoed Payday lot then washes the car and replaces the stolen radio 5th owner does no maintenance and regularly stores fast food rotting trash and soiled diapers in the car Repeat. When you get into 10+ year old cars. Count the transfers. The more owners, the worse shape the car is in. If it has been at auction more than once, it is a DOG.

I would love that, always had expensive GM, I can't do GM anymore and I didn't mind car payments, but the last couple years I now do. Celica sure would save tons of $$$. My 2012Chevy Malibu LTZ 3.6litre V-6 blew $5500 engine at 50,000 miles, had bank note, had to fix it, I literally cried when I had to fork that cash over, they even charged for oil, come on, spend $5000 u really Shud get oil w it.

I agree about the Cougars, but the Cougars are REALLY hard to find. My friend had a '70 Cougar for 18 years, it had a little rust and needed a little work back in 2014, still in good running shape, but some guy saw it and offered him $25,000 on the spot, since he was from up north and never saw cars like it. Thanks Scotty, this video should be the lesson that all buyers of older cars SHOULD be made to watch. This covered just about all the number one issues of what to look for when buying a car that is older then yourself. And when the car has gotten a good grade then you also should be ready to negotiate a PRICE that is fair and within your budget, which would take in any things that would need to be fixed. No old car comes without flaws so expect to have items fixed. like tires, brakes, AC, interior, and any modifications you want to do when it becomes YOUR car. Thanks Scotty a great video as always.

I got a salvage title car because the bumper fell off and the hood was bent. No frame damage, mechanical damage, no headlight damage or anything. Literally it was the bumper that fell off. If you do roll the dice with a salvage title, MAKE SURE YOU GET PICTURES FROM THE ACCIDENT AND SEE WHAT WAS REPAIRED. You'll have a good idea of how severe the accident was and you could save thousands of dollars buying a salvage title vs a normal accident free car. My 2017 370Z with 13,000 miles was 17,000 because it was a salvage from the front bumper falling off.

I'm also looking for it since you have recommended that those kinds of cars tend to run for a very long time. It seems like I'm in luck since I am seeing it for less than $2K. I will certainly keep these new tips in mind and further research before I make the buy. I have heard from my uncle that the toyota Corollas were popular here in the 90's used as taxi cabs so there are many spare parts that I can get in parts need replacing. Cheers, Scotty! :-D

yeah stay the hell away from the 99-02 Corollas with that 1zz engine. I owned a 99 as my first car, the oil consumption was so terrible I was spending more on oil every week than I was in gas. It got so bad that the engine would actually FLOOD with oil and wouldn't start without 10 minutes of cranking and letting it rest. It went about 120k KM without a proper oil change because it'd get a fresh gallon every damn week. The problem was fixed after 02 model.

I have a 2004 with almost 300,000 miles on it. It's still running on the original clutch. I bought it new, and other than wearables (tires, oil, brakes, etc.), it has only cost me about $1200 total in repair costs in almost 15 years. Best cars ever made, when it comes to reliability.

When you say suspension problem from tire wear can it also mean axle alignment?
@richardkey4289
@richardkey4289 5 жыл бұрын
NewbArchitect he means any &/or all pivoting suspension and steering parts; any worn part can make the hubs & wheels sit at a wrong angle.also, if the vehicle hit a curb, or slid off the road or something, the frame itself could be tweaked out of square, resulting in 1 or more wheel not being pointed straight ahead.even a road pothole can whack something out of place, remember, all that weight is on 4 points touching the road; easy to have things stressed & go wonky.

Another thing that a lot of people overlook with vehicles that have rebuilt/salvage titles, is the insurability... Some carriers won't even insure them; while the others that do, but for a much higher premium than a clean title!
