In this video, I cover 5 blues-centric acoustic guitars that shocked me because they are all such incredible deals. I looked at Recording Kings, Gretschs, Yamahas, Fenders, and so many more, and here's what I've come up with...
In this episode of Acoustic Tuesday, I'll also cover 5 easy upgrades you can make to your acoustic guitar. Whether you're on a budget or looking to augment the sound of your guitar, these upgrades will surely help!
Last but not least, I want to feature an Artist by the name of Charlie Hicks. Charlie Hicks has an incredible voice and is a bluesy dobro player that definitely should not be passed up.
As you continue on your guitar journey, or maybe if you're just starting, know that you don't have to spend an arm and a leg to get a great guitar. Especially when you're looking for a specialized sound for blues guitar, there are plenty of options out there!
Now, without further ado, here are the 5 shocking blues guitars that I found for under $230!
5. Gretsch Jim Dandy ($169)
Is the Gretsch Jim Dandy rich with overtones? Is it long on sustain? Does it sound luscious? NO...and that's what makes it a perfect blues guitar! The Jim Dandy has the bark, the attitude, and sounds incredible for costing just $169.
From a visual standpoint, the Gretsch Jim Dandy is a standard, no-frills kind of guitar. What shocked me most about this blues guitar was just how punchy it was, as you can see and hear in the demo video. Is it the best $169 you could spend? Perhaps...but I have a feeling another guitar on this list will give it a run for its money.
4. Recording King Series 7 - Single-0 ($169)
The Recording King Series 7 - Single 0 is a strong alternative to the Gretsch Jim Dandy. While the sound and timbre coming from the two guitars is very similar, this Recording King has a visual panache that certainly beats out the Gretsch.
One of my favorite parts about this Recording King is the headstock and the slotted fretboard inlays. These two parts scream vintage attitude and style, which I totally love. So, if you're a guitarist who wants to have a bluesy looking guitar that can be backed up with a punchy sound, this might be the guitar for you.
3. Yamaha FS800 ($199)
While not a dedicated blues guitar like the previous picks, the Yamaha FS800 is a strong contender. I really love this guitar because it's perfect for a guitarist who doesn't want to deal with a dreadnought body style. The smaller body of the Yamaha FS800 makes for easy playing.
Additionally, the solid wood top is also a nice addition that adds just a touch more sustain to make the guitar a well-rounded instrument - although it still leans heavily on the bluesy side. Finally, the price on this bad boy comes out to $199, which is very affordable considering how great it sounds.
2. Fender CP60S ($199)
Compared to the Yamaha FS800, this Fender has a much more shallow depth of tone. So, while it isn't as well-rounded as the Yamaha, it might actually be more suited for Blues playing. The parlor size is also a nice feature that is on par with the Yamaha's comfortability.
I likee that Fender has been moving into the acoustic market and trying to provide some decent-quality guitars at a great price. So far, the Fender CP60S is the most interesting offering so far.
1. Recording King Dirty 30's Series 9 Triple-0 ($229)
There are a couple reasons why the Recording King Dirty 30's Series 9 Triple-0 is my number one pick on this list. Perhaps the biggest reason is that Molly Tuttle demos the vintage version of this guitar. Boy does it sound great. And while the newer versions to quite sound like the guitar that's almost 100 years old, it still holds up.
The aesthetic factor on this acoustic blues guitar is perfect. From the sunburst finish to the pickguard, this is a no-nonsense blues machine. Additionally, the bigger body on this guitar will provide much more bass in your overall sound. So, if you're someone who likes a thump, this guitar is perfect for you!
If I missed any guitar that you think belong on this list, please let me know in the comments. I'm always on the hunt for finding great guitars at a great price!

My dad bought me a brand new Yamaha FG-180 "Red Label" acoustic guitar in 1968 that I still have and play to this day. My dad bought this for me because he didn't have the money for the Martin acoustic that I really wanted. I am here to tell you that since then, the FG-180 continues to get better and better over time. It performs and records well. In fact, the sound of this guitar is much better than my friend's 70-vintage D-25. Every time I play my Yamaha, I think of the sacrifice my dad made to buy it for me........Russell D.

I recommend that every guitarist should be able to set up, and do their own maintenance on an instrument. There is nothing more satisfying , than taking an affordable guitar and changing it into a screaming beast! I recently bought an Epiphone Hummingbird Pro, which, after unboxing, there was nothing 'Pro' about. It sounded terrible! The frets were marked by the strings and needed a minor fretjob, to remove some burrs where the string was catching and polishing. I installed a set of Elixir Nanoweb Phosphor Bronze 12 light into brass bridge pins, set the action and man, does this baby sing.....😀🎼 Thanks for your great videos, greetings from Switzerland👍🤘🎸

You are totally right! Couple weeks ago, we bought an acoustic guitar for my friend. Washburn HD10SCE. He was hating the guitar beause of it was un-setted up. He bing the guitar to me, I adjust the trust road, sand down the bridge saddle, polish the frets, oiled the freatboard and re string it. Now, he can't lay the guitar down from his lap :) The guitar become the most playable guitar for him right now.

Thank you for that show, Tony. Great job! I would like to throw in the Harley Benton CLP-15ME, from Thomann. I own this guitar as a lefty and it is my little slide devil. It has this boxy, dirty sound. I love it for playing blues and also for some folk. The body and the neck are made of mahagony. It also comes with a bone nut and bridge insert. Here in Germany it is about 219€

Great show as usual, Tony. I have another blues guitar suggestion. Back when I was a kid, the first guitar I ever had was a Stella Harmony. The local music store sold them like hotcakes as a beginner/student guitar. They were well made and cheap, even then. They had a spruce top with a birch back and sides. They were small, with a great, barky, boxy tone. You can still get a decent vintage one for about $200. Nowadays I wish I still had it, but a Stella Harmony will probably be my next guitarsenal purchase.

Hi Tony, so far I have watched the acoustic uprising and the greenfield guitar documentary. Like both a lot. Thinking about going to the finger picking workshop In Austria one of these years. I just ordered a budget guitar that I think meets the criteria. It’s a Harley Benton Custom Line CLP-15ME LH VS. I’m a lefty and was happy to find this one for 229 from Thomann. Solid mahogany top. Slotted head stock OOO body style with bone nut and compensated bone saddle. Not sure what kind of bridge pins, but I will play around with some options. Oh and it does come with a Fishman Presys II Preamp System with integrated tuner. Love the show keep up the great content.

@ericecklund676
@ericecklund676 4 жыл бұрын
@@davidm.kesslerfineart1717 That's true, they aren't even in the same ball park. They are however both Mahogany guitars with a Spruce top. The CEO-7 is Adi/Mahogany and the RK is Sitka/Mahogany. If you could listen to a recording of both guitars you would be able to tell them apart, probably because of the Spruce. But, the CEO-7 wouldn't be ten times better sounding that the RK Single 0, just because it is ten times more expensive.

@@powbobs The whole point of Tony's video is that there are less expensive options available that don't require you to spend $2,500 for a smaller 00/000 sized guitar. I have played the CEO-7 and it's a great guitar if you like the mahogany sound of an 00 sized body. Since I have a Martin 000-28, I might consider an Eastman E10 00 as an alternative at half the price of the CEO-7. But, there are going to be folks who don't have even $1,100 to spend on an 00 sized guitar. For them, one of the five guitars on Tony's list might fit the bill. On the other end of the spectrum are going to be folks who can easily afford a Bruce Sexauer FT-00 (about the same size as a CEO-7) for $18,000.

Hi Tony, this isn't really relevant but I like hearing your opinion as I feel your pretty honest from what I can tell. I watched some of you older covered through another channel in regards to the PRS acoustic line. What do you make of them? I'm in the market for something under 1K US and keep jumping between the Taylor 114CE or 214CE, Martin Road Series or something from the PRS line. I currently have a PRS SE custom 24 electric guitar, I love the brand, but most of the recordings I hear are very bright sounding. Do you know if there is one in your opinion that is warmer sounding like a Gibson or Martin? Thank you, keep up the good work!

I bought a Gretsch JD a couple of years ago and I never regretted it fr a single moment - I play it practically every day. However, no disrespect to the dude, but the clip of him playing actually showed exactly wht the JD is not so good at - strumming chords with a flatpick. Play some Delta blues, or some ragtime, finger-picked, and you'll hear it at its best. Get some snap and dirty bends with a side order of growl. Also sounds really good with bottleneck playing on slightly heavier strings - try 12s.

If you’re not playing a sub $200 guitar you’re not playing the blues. Most iconic blues was play on some pos guitar that was available. I’ll have to agree the Recording King guitars these days are pretty good, and I’ll have to add my personal opinion on Gretsch: guitars are ok, but the resonator guitars are worth it as well as the cheaper open back banjos. And remember that you cannot play the blues in a suit unless you slept in it the night before.

Tony, I have watched your show every week since episode 1, and gained a lot of info from it. I've commented a few times, and even contributed an item way back in 40's. You've always come across as a a nice guy, which is why I find myself hesitating to call you out on something. Last week (AT 143) you made a big thing about being nice to each other. That was what prompted me to write this to you. About seven weeks ago I spent several hours compiling a CD of mostly English guitarists that you may not be aware of. I typed out and printed a list of the stuff on the CD with small bits of info regarding the performers. I posted this to you as I say seven weeks ago. I can't be certain that it has arrived, but I've received a package sent to me by a friend who lives in Virginia five days after she posted it, so I feel reasonably sure the CD arrived at your address. I didn't expect a mention on your show, and didn't send the CD with that in mind. What I did expect though was just a plain 'Thank you'. You are obviously too busy to attend to that, and I have to admit I'm feeling a bit disappointed in you. It won't however, stop me watching your show, just that I now see you in a slightly different light. gvanwin@gmail.com

George, Thank you so much for watching all the AT shows for nearly 3 years :-) I appreciate you sending that cd and it sounds like something I would really enjoy, but unfortunately I have not received it as of yet. All the mail I receive makes it into the show's mailbag portion with a good healthy thank you as I do appreciate all of the incoming messages and such from fans of the show. It looks like it may have gotten lost somewhere between you and I, which is a huge bummer because I am always interested in hearing new music. Thank you again for watching the show, here's to many more years full of Acoustic Tuesdays :-)

I played 2 of a 4 guitar set by Grestch from the 1950s. All four in the set were etched with a cowboy scene. And they sounded great. As I've played Blues from grade school. I never found the sound that encompasses many genres from the years of yesterday. But, I needed change from the everyday question of playing...(pick a song!) So, now playing Gaelic, Irish, Russian and so many others, I unwound the strings on my Guild fg30 and put it aside for the Recording King model we're watching now. A very hip rig at a decent price.

One more comment. Forgot about your soon to arrive bundle of joy. Do you have a day care lined up? I hear there is an excellent on in your area. One of the owners is a bit questionable, but I understand his co-owner wife is really the best part of the operation. She picks up his slack all the time.

In my opinion I would say either of the recording kings (likely the larger one) would make a good slide instrument... just would have to set it up for slide :-)

@@tacguitar Thanks, I'm looking for a new guitar at the moment that isn't going to break the bank , I am drawn to the Recording King's or the Jim Dandy. I own an Epiphone EL OO and have owned a Tanglewood Crossroads, both are very reasonable for the price. The Tanglewood was less than £100 and the Epiphone was I think about £250. Both are worthy Blues Boxes.

It looks like I'm in the minority here. The first guitar you listed sounds and looks tacky. It reminds me of my 1967-68 Steela-Harmony (the second worst guitar in the world), the second was a little better, the Yamaha FS800 was on the impressive side, the Fender was okay sonically, but visually was boring (maybe it's because most of the time I don't like sunburst or tabacco stains), the Recording King was the best.

......and no one played blues? Wtf did you just search the web for videos of people playing said guitars? If you’re going to recommend something , play it and show us why. Kinda odd to recommend guitars for blues then show how well they sound playing folk. I waited for the last guitar to hear some blues, but nope pop country ugh.
