One thing that I have always thought about is why no one, simply no one educates teenagers on how to love and be loved. I don't just mean sex education which is also equally important but just to know what healthy relationships look like , how they feel and mean. We cover every academic topic out there but why are relationships never considered worth discussing. It's one of most significant aspects of one's existence and totally left on kids to navigate through this on their own.

Have been stalked, harassed, constantly stared at and groped by a 'friend' from college when I was really young and instead of warning him off, all my other friends asked me why I didn't like him back and tease him with my name as though anything in that entire equation was mutual. I had clearly told him I don't think about him as anything other than a friend. Had asked him if I had given any indication that I was interested and he replied in the negative. And YET that didn't deter him from acting the exact same way. Still, somehow, I was the 'heartless' person for rejecting him. The pressure was so much that all I could do was let it all slide as a joke and had started believing that maybe I was the one who was overreacting when in fact I had to bunk a couple of classes just to avoid being touched by him. All of us are doctors, by the way... so, yeah. education doesn't change anything and this entire "harass and stalk her and she'll fall in love with you" trope really needs to go. Movies and shows need to stop glorifying such disgusting acts.

Just because something was 'acceptable' once, doesn't mean that we can't criticize it. Sati system, child marriage, etc were all acceptable in a certain time period, what makes some people think that we should embrace the fact that they were 'acceptable' or representing an era? They were still glorified. Certain crimes and immoral things were glorified. It'd the same as accepting the crimes done by people in past as normal. Something considered bad today, has been a bad thing since forever and we should not put our word weapons down just because they weren't considered bad in a "certain period of time".

I truly truly believe stalking girls and harassing woman culture in India is a product of movies. I am from a rural background, stalking and harassing girls was considered "cool" thanks to our role model heroes. Guys like me who were hesitating to do that were considered as beta male.

Personally, I have observed that Stalking was glorified and was not seen problematic in the Tamil Cinema Industry until 2014-2015. There were several movies which came upon that theme and moral policing in movies was prevalent during that time. However, due to the rise of new age directors in the last decade with their increased sensibilities stopped glorifying such madness and the audience too evolved. Earlier Movies which were glorified were seen from a new aspect and new movies which still stuck to the same concept was trashed and bashed, examples being movies like 'Remo' and 'Mr. Local'. Tamil Cinema Industry is now moving away from glorifying such concepts for good.

Constant debates and conversations about sexism in Bollywood movies over the years has reduced such sexist portrayals and moral policing to a great extent in movies from recent years. Its not 100% eradicated, but its safe to say that at least 98% of recent popular films and web series shows are free of it. Such rigorous debates and conversations about content matter should happen within the South film industries as well. That's the only way change will happen, sliding it under the rug in the name of entertainment is not the solution.

There are so many red flags in these movies I could sew a wedding dress for each woman in my family with fabric to spare.

Something from real life that I am prompted to talk about is the whole aspect of normalising stalking. I remember that when I was in my late teens, I initiated something by glancing over at this guy who was 20 from across the room. Ever since, he'd always stare at me from a distance and he literally constructed this whole 'affair' thing just based on staring at me from a distance. It was as if only the two of us knew about it, like he wanted to keep this some secret 'understanding' between us. I'm not just saying that this guy was checking me out, he was practically living and dwelling in a story where he'd watch me from a distance. Initially locking eyes with him felt so powerful, it was like this connection I never felt before, but since he never spoke even when I tried approaching him and didn't want to do anything about it, I eventually lost interest in him. However, he still didn't stop. Although I only saw him occasionally, it went on for almost 5 years! He always stands at a distance to watch me, and at parties, he'd stand afar, hide or crouch behind the door and stare at me. I ignored all this too, until one day when he was again standing at a distance and staring at me when I started getting really annoyed. It went for a couple of minutes straight, and being under his surveillance felt like I had no escape. I wanted to be left alone, I wanted to escape his gaze, so I hid behind something for a minute or so hoping that he'd stop. However, even when I stepped out, he was still standing there, at a distance waiting for me to step out so he could still keep staring. Something about this feeling just made me nauseous, I felt sick and when I got into my car I couldn't stop crying. I didn't care to reason anymore, I didn't care if he's doing thing because he thought I was still in love with him but I gave this guy enough chances, 5 years of chances, before I finally realised that this made me feel trapped. I just wanted to escape from it. People have told me "yeah but you initially loved him, so it's ok right?" No, staring for a couple of seconds to convey interest is fine, but if the other person lost interest in you and you still keep watching them from afar continuously, it is an unhealthy fixation and an obsession which is a form of stalking.

About the male gaze, it's true we women go through it every day of our lives. There's a dialogue in the Mumbai diaries 26/11 attacks series where Konkana sen is talking to doctor Oberoi who is fed up with his day going bad due to him being unable to save the lives of his patients after the attacks and seeing people die! Konkana looks at him and goes like 'what you are going through in this one whole day, we women go through this every day of our life!' honestly, I couldn't have agreed more.

Consent should be matter of common sense. Nobody likes being stalked and harrassed in the name of attraction.

Being a vijay fan, I have to say Villu, Sivakasi, Kuruvi and many more have a problematic theme portraying certain social injustice as heroic. I hope he makes better decisions on his scripts and never revert back to an era of such idiotic scripts.

RHTDM was a super hit, but imagine Saif's character was made the villain just because he was a NRI and was to marry Dia. However Maddy's character who was a fake, impersonator, stalker and had anger issues was the hero and the girl falls for her. The basic values are flawed..... 🤔🤔🤔

The south indian film industry has had a very interesting development from the 2010's. I remember watching those movies as a kid and even then being appalled by some of the scenes. But over the past 5 to 7 years, the south indian industry, malayalam, tamil and telugu (my favorite being naveen polishetty), have developed greatly to give us some very compelling films. Perhaps it is telling of our growth as an audience that filmmakers are given platforms to make unique and interesting movies.

Same goes for Sivakasi (the public shaming of Asin), Minsara Kanna (where he lectures Khushboo that a woman can never be independent like a man. Khushboo has an eccentric characterization which is anyways a separate topic for discussion). @Jammy, u need to watch 7G Rainbow Colony - the agony faced by the heroine Sonia Agarwal, has not been depicted better in any other mainstream commercial Tamizh film, due to the unabated stalking by the hero. It can be an ideal topic for ur next Mathlab kuch bhi episode. Regarding Madhavan in Alaipayudhey, Karthik in Mouna Ragam - both being the most celebrated films of Mani Ratnam, yes, stalking was present. Though in Alaipayudhey, it can be argued that the script is such that Shalini responds to Madhavan's advances passively (she visits his house for the baby shower, smiles at him etc., but this in no way justifies the stalking), it was continuous pursuing and stalking in Mouna Ragam by Karthik despite repeated strong rejections from Revathy (unlike the case in Alaipayudhey). However, the bottomline is, to the general audience, stalking becomes a problem only when a ruffian like hero does it. It does not unfortunately appear to be a problem to the general audience when the hero who is doing this has a good personality. And in Mouna Ragam, Karthik is shown as a dashing handsome young man .

Men watching women taking shower is a crime, it is voyuresim. Another similar scene is from Nayak when Anil Kapoor watches Rani Mukherjee taking a bath and even clicks her pictures obviously without her consent and then she falls in love with him. Terrible

Tbh i would like to see some "matlab kuch bhi" episodes on Hollywood movies. No movie industry is perfect. And although Hollywood is more progressive than indian movie industry. Sometimes even they take it too far. So I think it would be fun to see their shortcomings.

Vijay, Dhanush and Madhavan are legendary actors who should improve with every film. Hum Tumhare Hain Sanam was surely a film that could have ended earlier. But I don't really think it was a bad/ too unrealistic movie.

There is a deleted scene in master where JD(played by Vijay) defends a girl from being slut shamed after being sexually harassed and assaulted and goes off on the professors who say this is what happen to girls who wear skimpy clothes. That shows how far Tamil cinema and Tamil directors have come and how far the audience have come. Hopefully this carries over to the future movies.

I am a tamilian and I appreciate that you have highlighted few sequences from Vijay and Dhanush movies. Stalking and harassing women seem to be a common theme in almost all love stories in films. Sad part is, the baton has been passed on to every generation. All the movies of Sivakarthikeyan, this generation star who is compared to Vijay, have the exact storyline of a guy stalking and forcing a woman to fall in love with him. Vijay films for me have always been uncomfortable to watch. It's something I always had on TV growing up but could never really accept it. Everybody treated it like it was normal and heroic but it was just cringy and uncomfortable for me. Even now most Vijay films lack story and reality. The latest hits like master, bigil, mersal,etc were all just commercial masala which is a genre I believe shouldn't exist. Except for the charm and screen presence Vijay has I find it difficult to accept that he is a great actor. He does have some good films but I don't think he has grown as an actor.

Alaipayuthey was almost relatable for people back then because men during their young age, did creepy things like that at that time. But, watching this now where in most movies, girls are clearly creeped out with stalking and that men knows it being out of their minds, I am happy to know that more approaching is happening and rather not staring or following.

I would like to see your review on a telugu film named Arya (2004) in which the lead actor keeps stalking and harassing the actress in every possible way to accept his love, and the worst part is that was a blockbuster in the year 2004, a path breaking film in Allu Arjun's career. I watched hindi dubbed on Sony Max of film called Nenu Local (Dangerous Khiladi 4) This film left me brain dead and it stars one of my favourite actor Nani (Lead of Jersey which I adore) Basically the premise is a Jobless guy falls in love with a girl, lies to his parents so they get personal loan to send him into the college that she is studying in, stalks her Gaslights her manipulate her basically every toxic behaviour you can think of he has it, He drinks smokes and refuses to take any responsibility, when she asks him to quit smoking he says I was smoking before you came into my life you came later and I'm not leaving smoking for you bc that's how logic works I guess The girl's father sets her marriage to another guy who is also in love with her and years ago he asked for her hand to her father, father replied you have to become something, so he became a police officer in few years got home and everything a couple requires for a healthy life came back to ask if she would marry him now and if she refuses he would go away and leave her alone AND HE IS THE FUCKING VILLAN OF THE MOVIE 😫😫😫 after the second act our hero refuses to change his life, refuses to get a job, or leave all the bad habbits of smoking and drinking that is being paid by his mother bc he is fucking jobless she decides to marry the officer, the officer realises at the wedding day that she still loves him so he goes to Nani offer him a job so he can marry the girl that officer is in love with( but he is the VILLAN) and now that he has a job he can also convince the girl's father, guess what our hero does he refuses the job that was practically given to him in his hand By his logic He says he won't change bc this is the man she fall in love with and he wants be this guy for the rest of his life ( I was screaming into the screen in anger TU NALLA HAI CHUTIYE 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️) And after all this in the end he gets the girl with more gaslighting and manipulation and the father finally gives up WTF This film came out in 2017 😫😫😫

I am Tamilian, and honestly, films like Villu make me cringe. Films released in the early 2000s romanticize stalking and harassment so much, that it becomes normalized and accepted in our society. I was catcalled a month ago, and let me also mention that I am barely 13. My friend told me to take it as a compliment because that's what movie heroes do. I officially give up hope in humanity. And no one teaches their kids about how to love and how to be loved. You just learn it from movies. But when movies are this shitty, your love life becomes shitty too. Stalking is not flirting. It's disgusting and makes people uncomfortable. If I see one more comment defending Vijay's actions in Villu, I swear to god, I'ma bury myself under my blankets and hibernate until humans start having basic decency and common knowledge.

I always felt Hum Tumhare Hain Sanam is a deliberate sequel for Anjam in the mid 2000's with a twist wherein SRK's unfulfilled dream to marry Madhuri in Anjam came true through Hum Tumhare Hain Sanam. Coz SRK's borderline obsession disorder films also included Dar & Anjam as well other than Hum Tumhare Hain Sanam .

Actually Jammy, If u watch R.Madhavan's Alai Payunthey, He did stalk her. But he never pressurized her, He never tried to physically hurt her. And there was a scene where he goes to her near her train and proposes, and I consider it adorable. There was even a scene where they feel like they can't be together anymore and He faces rejection, But he never tried to give her a lecture like some other movies have done. If you watch the movie, It's amazing, It gives us a feeling of Love and Affection. If you watch the movie, you can understand the intensity of each and every scene. And also it has the Maniratnam essence. (Only My Opinion)

I am a die hard fan of LadySuperstar Nayanthara.. still I've disliked films like Villu.. well the industries promoted only such sort of films back then.. Well from then to now Nayanthara has totally revolutionized the south industries and now does films like Puthiya Niyamam, Imaikka Nodigal, Aramm, Netrikann etc 💯 And just the way Samantha Akkineni speaks about Nayan..when one woman makes the change it positively influences others as well! ✨ Happy to see all these happening ❤
