I am a German woman and yes, you are right. In my experience German men do not flirt as much as men from other countries because some are just shy and wish the woman would make the first step or they are confused because a lot of women nowerdays are or appear very independent and confident and the men don't want to scare them away. I also know what you mean with being honest. But I think that's a good thing. At least then you can trust and rely on them. I used to be married to an American and he always said something nice but half of the time didn't really mean it. He just said what he thought I would like to hear, I can really do without that.

I love how strong and independent women here in Germany are! I really think that has a lot to do with the guaranteed maternity leave. Girls grow up seeing women be financially independent and working! I see a lot more cultural equality in Northern European countries where women are in the workplace.

Yes, there is a kind of border between North and South Europe! Southern Europe has still the traditional role model for families and mothers. That's why the birth rates in Scandinavia e.g. are much higher than in Spain or Italy! In Germany we had the same border between the West and the East: In the former GDR women were needed as a work force, so they had a job and a family. Until 10 or even 15 years ago the Western part was still much, much old fashioned, and today particularly Bavaria and BW are still conservative in terms of the women's and mothers role. There is also a GREAT difference between the level of self confidence between West and East German women. As a sociologist and someone who moved from the West to the East I can confirm that to 100%! ;-)
2 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't say that the low birth rates between south europe and northern europe are due to cultural roles of "women do the house work" and "man bring the money home". It is quite typical that a woman has a job and provides to herself and to the family. I would rather say the reasons for such low rates are more related with 1) the very low average salaries, 2) very low welfare support for families and 3) the very short maternity leave. Unfortunately is very common nowadays that women will have their first child after the age of 35 (actually more towards the age of 40). I'm very happy to hear german man are very good and engaged father's, i would love it to be true all over the world 😉

Don't underestimate the value of a proper sex education that doesn't neglect the fact that sex can be fun for men and women if you are respectful with each other. When dating goes beyond sexual interest, it is way easier to be serious and honest with each other.

Same here, me and my partner of 13 years are Austrians. And though Austrians and Germans tend to have slight to sometimes even big differences in their mentality, romantically, German speaking men have something in common. My man is very respectful, a little shy, no smalltalker (like many German speakers haha), straight forward, good cook and dedicated partner and father :-) Also, the German speaking world mainly refrains from - what I call - Hollywood dating rules. If a man likes you, he will most probably tell you quite fast, straight to your face. No overbearing romantic gestures, flowers, chocolates and wawawoom action. Just plain to your face haha And ladies, it does have its charms!

I’m glad you have such wonderful experiences with German men and that you were so lucky with your husband. However, I just want to highlight that you rate German men that were obviously husband material as you and your friends married these men. I am a German single and must say that I have dated many German men that were not honest or father/husband material. I don’t think you can rate dating German men in general, but it seems like you were really lucky.

As the male part on this side I would argue that it might has to do with what you are looking for as well. See you have basically 3 types of mens 1st the players which are basically childs stuck in puberty and searching for trophies rather than an equal relationship. Those are mostly the ones that prefer to be in the middle of the party and honestly more likely to attract women therefore. Be aware of them please lots of scumbags are in this group as well. As we speak about childs there is the 2nd group mens that are not all grown up in some aspects ( i have to include me here too) This group is basically stuck between the missing experience of a relationship and their own wishes for life. I wouldn't say we are selfish but we have some issues to understand the needs of our partners and deal often with a lot of our own problems first. I'm not the best father to my daughter nor I'm the most reliable partner for my girlfriend in some aspects (I'm often late, have not much time for her ,because of my work situations and the time we spend together is not feeling like beeing together then but more like sitting in the same room dealing with our own thoughts and the main reason to meet each other is the need for something like money or going shopping or visiting family .....) This might be frustrating and this type of men is not suited to be the partner you dream off but overall it is not like they want to disappoint you they are just the way they are. Honest but also overwhelmed. My girlfriend and I are living in the same house in 2 different flats we both have work with bad working times so we see each other like once or twice a week only and I often spend more time with her mother and grandmother which are basically raising our daughter most of the time then I can spend time with her and because of this whole situation there is little news and a lot of more of the same when we finally meet. I myself would wish that she tells me what she actually wants to do so we could do it and it is basically what partner shouldn't be afraid of talking about with the 2nd group of men. the 3rd type of men is basically what is spoken off in this video or as you say it the husband material type ^^ The main reason why we are not so active in showing our interest might actually be that we are afraid of getting a "korb" as it is not just that we feel miserable ourselfs because of it but it is actually making the whole atmosphere weird. It is basically like the idea of your best friend relationships getting awkward the moment one talks about their feeling for you and you do not share them in the same way. Despite that as much as most women like to hear compliments it also has this bad taste of a macho if mens are doing the first step too. Speaking as a man myself I would wish that women learn to understand what problems we have with relationships at all and instead of avoiding our questions with small talk chatter how important it would be for us to be told what you expect from us rather than letting us figure it out and pissing you of because you getting frustrated about us ;)

@@kirasternenfeuer6198 thank you so much for your very open response. The way you replied makes me think of you as a pretty mature guy as you seem to reflect on the situation a lot. You said you would belong to the childish type of men, but here you are reflecting on mankind and why they behave the way they do and even putting on words what you (and probably also many other men) need. Thank you so much. I know to avoid the first type of men for sure as these guys are neither attractive to me nor would I waste my time like that. I often met the second type of men which was scared when I mentioned I want kids and a family. It felt to me like this type of men is probably the biggest group so it’s hard to find the husband material type of men that are ready for a serious relationship and maybe kids. I will try to improve also my communication skills to help men know what I would like in a relationship. Let’s hope that doesn’t scare them away ;)

As a foreigner who moved to Germany 5years ago, I’ve also found that I rather approach or give a girl clearer signs outside Germany than in Germany. In other countries, if a girl is uninterested in you, they turn you down softly and nicely. But german girls are really rude with their rejections. So naturally I need a stronger internal push to approach a girl in Germany and risk being insulted. Of course if she’s interested in you, then it’s all fine but how do you know she is, if you don’t flirt or approach? It’s an annoying cultural difference

I think my boyfriend copied his way of flirting from his American father. We met on the internet and we were going to meet and he was like "Hey, I could come over tomorrow!" and 12 hours later I picked him up from the train station and even though he's quite introverted, he flirted with me very directly and it totally threw me. I wasn't even remotely used to that. Well, it will be nine years ago on the 20th of December and we're still together, so he was pretty successful with that. 😂

Good morning Antoinette, What I know from the part of our family living in Poland is, that family means a lot to them. Family is important and everyone cares about the others. When went to a dinner or lunch it meant a lot to them, they prepared always so much food and took there time to enjoy everything together as a family. It was always such a joy to visit them. A German with polish root's is definitely a good mix, they are correct, honest and heartwarming when you know them better. Dad's caring more about their kid's and like to be a real father is something that changed in a positive way over the last 50 years step by step and that's just wonderful. Education and contact to people from other countries is something very important in that case. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and to be honest, your jeans jacket is really cool. ☺️

German men are very good fathers because they feed and change the diaper as if it were the most normal thing in the world, even they let their work be work to enjoy the time with their children. I have not seen that from Australian, New Zealand or American men! We German men watch the woman we find interesting and don't stare! We Germans generally test and wait before we mean business, so it really becomes real when we trust the other person! Then you’re on the cheek for a lifetime.

I disagree with your statement that in Germany everything is 50/50 and women and men are equal. To be honest I am a bit shocked that you see it that way. Maybe it's better than in NZ, I have no clue, as I don't live there. But statistics say different than this 50/50 statement! Women take much more time off work for children. They are most likely the ones who will raise the kids. That's also one reason why they don't earn as much as men! Part time work is a "killer" for higher paid jobs. Also many employer think that a woman could leave work for kids, which is the reason why they will prefer a man for the position. Women will be told thinks like: Teacher is a perfect job for women because you can leave it for 3 years and come back. Wtf, nobody tells men this shit. If a man leaves his job for "Elternzeit" (parental leave??) He will get so many comments like: " oh wow such a good and loving father!" But for women it's normal and if they don't do it they are a "Rabenmutter". Things get better, but it's not Equal, I could go on and write a book about it. Feminism is still very needed, also in Germany!

Also I have to add: Within Europe Germany is very much behind. Women stay at home so much more than men. There are statistics about it and in other countries it is much more even. Also if you look at salaries. In Germany almost always men are the ones who earn more. The topics are very related.

And also as a last comment: Women do still about 70 Percent or so of household work. Not 50/50 if you look at statistics

I agree. To say that "German men are great fathers" is very generalized and just not true. Of course there are great German fathers, but there are so many who are not. I think it's a very naive point of view based on her own husband. 50% of fathers don't pay child support, so how could that be true?

My 2 cents

Danke Antoinette.. Ertappt!
