5 Simple Piano Exercises For Building Technique

In this piano tutorial I'm going to go over 5 exercises I indulge in from time to time to keep me in shape. They're great for building finger independence and strength, simple enough to be picked up by a beginner but complicated enough to challenge veterans if played sufficiently fast.
Remember to always practice slowly and with a metronome at first until you feel confident in your playing and can play each note evenly. Then slowly pick up the speed. If you're starting out, think long-term: it takes many months to build up technique on these, so don't rush! Remember, if you can't play it slowly, you sure can't play it fast.
If you enjoy the video and want to "give back", consider paying my sister's online ETSY jewelry store a visit (if that's your thing, of course :) ). I am proud to support her & her work and talent. Here is the link:

Very important to stay on top of the keys when playing stretches like the rock octave exercise. It's very tempting to cheat. Also, make sure to use a metronome doing these exercises. This way you can also reliable track your progress. If you can't play it clean, turn the metronome down 10 bpm until you master the tempo.

Is guitar easier than piano?
@MHK_79
@MHK_79 5 жыл бұрын
@@juan7582 I wouldn't say easier.. just slightly different.. for piano you mainly focus on hand coordination and timing, and maybe how hard you press the keys later on.. classical fingerstyle guitar might be similar to this, but the real challenge in playing guitar is improving physical ability of your fingers.. pressing the strings firmly and fingering/picking technique requires a lot of exercise, just like any physical activity.. developing callus on your fingertips takes time, but as long as you enjoy the process, it's really rewarding later on.. piano requires crazy right hand left hand coordination and sense of timing, but as long you press the right key, you should get the sound that you want.. but for guitar, the same note can have a lot of different sounds if you know the technique as you are directly in contact with the strings the created the sound, unlike piano where your finger are not physically in contact with the strings.. I've played guitar for for than 10 years, and recently i'm trying to learn piano/keyboard on my own.. I find that hand coordination from my guitar playing helps a lot, but piano requires a looot more coordination than guitar.. though they are less harsh on your fingers.. :)
@larabeautysage
@larabeautysage 4 жыл бұрын
This is true for me too, I think my left hand fingers are quite stong from playing guitar so the excercises were not as difficult to get into as I had anticipated. I did have to polish up timing and coordination because its a different instrument. Starting slow or at a comfortable pace helps me greatly. Happy practicing!

Mr Petester z if I understand you would like an exercise this may seem long but is in .any steps and you might have to print this out . this may not be clear regardless copy and paste it in a file.. if I made a video of this it would be self explanatory.. . I give you about five or so exercises here.. start simple put both thumbs on middle c . now play digits 54321 with both hands at same time. .this exercises will end up with a thumb on both fingers hitting middle c simultaneously. I don't have a piano in front of me . go up one octave I think that c will be c5 put pinky on one c5 and play the octave back. 54321321 thumb will end on middle c I think that is c4. now remove the right hand and play the notes from c up to to middle c. 54321321 simple right. now play the two simultaneously. . left will be playing cdefgabc. right will be playing cbagfedc.. in numbers right digits 54321321 . . Now move out to c6 with right hand play cbagfedcbagfedc . simultaneously play left hand c2 cdefgabcdefgabc your thumbs will end up on middle c at the same time on the right hand the digits are 54321321321321... note that 54321321321322321.. on the left hand .. you can move your hands out to the further details notes and you will get different effects.. it will sound like Bach..

It's a long journey man, that never ends, so it's never too late. I started teaching myself banjo last year. This year I realised I know nothing about musical theory so I pulled out the old keyboard to help visualise it better. I'm 39. Just a little bit every day, even if it is only 10-15 mins. Before the start of last year, I've never played a musical instrument.

May be a foolish question but do you recommend doing every exercise in different keys or are the keys you demonstrated in each exercise sufficient enough?
@plootyluvsturtle9843
@plootyluvsturtle9843 Жыл бұрын
i’m so late i don’t even know if this is any useful to you but, different keys will feel different playing and a lot of the time and possibly harder. it’s also really really convenient if you know your keys when learning songs just to make it easier so you don’t have to keep referencing the key signature on the sheet music

I know it's an old video but thank you so much for this still. I took piano lessons for many years as a kid, and then switched to violin in my teen years. But like so many I fell out of playing my instruments in my young adult years. Despite that though I always kept a piano in the house. Now I'm a parent and so happy that my little girl is interested in the instruments, I find myself wanting to scrape the rust off of what I learned so many years ago and get some of my dexterity back so we can enjoy it together. This is exactly the exercises I was hoping to find. Thank you so much. 💕
