5 Single Malt Scotch Whiskies Cheaper In Canada Than In The U.K.

Canada is known for a lot of things, but low whisky prices is not typically one of them. Sometimes it feels like a Canadian Whisky lovers favourite pass-time is complaining about the multitudes of horribly priced whiskies. And while we seem to have endless examples of poorly or unfairly priced bottles of whisky there are some fairly priced bottles that could even be considered deals or steals at the prices asked. In this list I wanted to highlight 5 Single Malt Scotch Whiskies that are being sold in Canada for less than in the U.K.! Because the U.K. is the domestic market from which Single Malt Scotch whisky comes from, the prices there are often closer to MSRP and offer a good comparable for export markets. These 5 Single Malt Scotch Whiskies featured in this list are all available for sale for less in Canada than in the U.K. It's not the norm but I certainly appreciate the prices we get on these whiskies in Canada at this time. There's no question that certain Canadian locales (one rhymes with Shmalberta) offer pricing at or below UK pricing. I found the same situation when I was in Kentucky a couple years ago. Tax rules are highly variable and with the large state tax on liquor in Kentucky AND the exchange rate differences, Alberta has cheaper bourbon prices than the state that makes most of it. Of course right now the Canadian Federal Government is ramping up alcohol taxes but I hope that changes soon.....like really soon....like today if possible....but alas, one can only dream sometimes. You nailed it man, it all hinges on taxes. It's incredible that with shipping from across the world, because of taxes and free market principles, how low these bottles can be in a certain Western province. The Bourbon prices make me want to jump into that too. The Rare Breed price was criminally low at about $40 for so long lol. May sounds good to me, looking forward to it buddy. Cheers 🥃

I didn't respond to your question in the community post you did but, while I might be a bit biased, my opinion would be to stick to the spirit reviews on Short Pours. The protein reviews are helpful but I feel like they might appeal to different audiences. Now, will I take my own advice and keep beer off my channel? Thanks Matt@@whiskyonthewestcoast yep bit tired of the week but had a blast tonight retrying one of my other Highlights of the Year 2023...this is so good & you might like it as it has really something of a high Rye whisky profile while it is a single malt (so, not so far, if not sounding too immodest, to my own creation in late 2021). It is Rampur Jugalbandi #4 Ipa finish, CS (rated 93,5/100 points now-it gained a half point tonight & it is only bit under neckpour ! -and before you ask, I'll review it soon too), Cheers !

$145 is a "buy now" sort of price on that whisky. LCBO prices include tax as well, correct? If so that should be the lowest in the country as I've seen it in Alberta for $140 + the 5% Tax. Great shout out for an addition to the list! Cheers Peter! 🥃

Great idea for a list Matt! Sadly this is virtually impossible in Ontario 😂 but I am definitely ready to start ordering from Alberta for the savings even with shipping! Not familiar with UK $$$ but here is a fun one for the USA. Buddy got a bottle in FLA for 59.99 USD. Ontario is selling for $189.00. Wild I know. All the best. Cheers. Man, super quiet trade deadline. But sometimes it's the trades that you don't make that are more important than the ones you do. Canucks are still in a good spot to make April interesting. That FLA deal sounds crazy. Love hearing stuff like that. Hopefully Ontario gets better one day, but until then look west, but not that far west haha. Cheers Tyler!

Shhhh Matt. I agree with you, if you are a local in the provinces you mentioned, you win on those prices. Once in a bluemoon while, we get a screaming clearance deals in Ontario but you are talking like on a very rare occasions. As for other ones, I would add Ardbeg 10, Arran 10, Glenallachie 12, Glencadam 10 sometimes they go on sale in Alberta and those prices I believe are cheaper compared to elsewhere. Old Forester bourbons are sometimes at a good price too. Btw, Craigellachie at $50 is a great price with taxes and shipping still works out cheaper for me compared to local price.

Haha yeah. Real talk, I'm thinking I may need to stop mentioning a certain western province in the future. I feel like those who watch generally know where to look. Great adds to the list buddy, all are worthy and bloody steals. When it goes up, years later into the future we may all talk about the good old days of $50 CR 13. Peter White pointed out the CR 17 was/is on sale at a pretty fetching price of $145 including tax at the LCBO. Personally I've been waiting to try the CR 17 as on sale it still costs 3 bottles of CR 13 lol. Cheers Rohit! 🥃

Thanks Jon! I hate turning down a good deal, but probably should do so for my own good once and a while haha. The Old Pulteney was from CC in Calgary on 20% off. To me it's a whisky paradise when I compare it to B.C. with our tax or Washington State with yours lol. I know some guys who buy bottles for 12 months and then drive out and load up. We're a ridiculous bunch haha. Cheers Travis! 🥃

You know what, if those are the ones you get a good value and are going to be the only whiskies you ever drink, you could do worse 😃 Funny thing is, even though they are produced in the UK, they're not priced the best there but sold at cheaper in Germany and Netherlands. Definitely could do worse man. These are all worthwhile whiskies, and personally I'll stock as much Glengarioch 12 and Craigellachie 13 as I can at these prices. It does seem the Netherlands is one of the very best priced malt markets out there. Hope you picked up some sweet bottles on your trip to Deanston man. Cheers Sertug 🥃

Remember that in 2018 & 19, when Glendronach 18 was much older than the age statement, it was a lower price in Canada than the US. Cheers Matt

Man, I love to complain about our liquor/whisky prices up here as much as anyone, but events like the 2018/2019 Glendronach 18 price are good to remember it's not all bad. Very interesting! I had been interested in the Glenmorangie Palo Cortado. I have only seen it for $90 but I would take a gamble for $70 for sure. How are you liking it? Cheers, Matt!

On the Glenmorangie Palo Cortado I am enjoying it more and more. First sip I wasn't so sure, came off a bit too spice driven. Since then it's more rich and nutty. only maybe 5 half pours in but so far so good for $70. Cheers buddy 🥃

Nice list Matt! I always enjoy your content. If you tried the Old Pulteney Huddart I highly recommend you do. Also, I live in the Seattle area and we don’t get the Benromach Cask Strength releases. Is there a liquor store in BC you would recommend checking out for Benromach? Thanks and keep up the great work!

Thanks Kevin, love having people watching the channel that are in the PNW! I'll be trying the Huddart soon but have heard good things so I'm definitely looking forward to it. I've been picking up my Benromach cask strength from Alberta for about $90 a bottle. However, if you are looking for Benromach Single casks in B.C. some Angry Otter Liquor locations have an ex-bourbon 11 year old I believe(248th St. near the Aldergrove border crossing has it for around $150 CAD). Also Strath Liquor had a 1st fill sherry cask Benromach Single Cask as well for $186 CAD. Hope this helps! Cheers Kevin! 🥃

Hi Simu! Thanks for watching! Dalmore 18 Year looks pretty on store shelves, but at $550 it should stay there. I'd suggest looking for other whiskies. Arran 18 is overpriced in B.C. at $220 but I'd still buy 2 of those over Dalmore 18. Some really like it, but I cannot support the price it is being sold at. Jumped from $295 to $550 last year. There is nothing that could explain a jump that high. I actually included Dalmore 18 on a video I did called "Top Alternatives to these 5 Overpriced Whiskies." Like I said, some really like it but I'd personally spend my money elsewhere. Cheers eh! 🥃

Never go up north to BC without picking up the Glen Garioch 12. On my third bottle since seeing how inexpensive it is up your way last summer. Wonderful stuff. As for cheaper in my market??? I'm not aware of anything that's cheaper here in Seattle. 😢😢

That Glen Garioch 12 is probably the best buy in B.C. along with Ledaig 10 and maybe Benromach 10. Not surprised it's a threepeat on your shelf! I just realised that it's currently on sale for even less in B.C. right now at $65. Washington's liquor taxes are just depressing lol. I'm glad you've got a couple good local distilleries to explore but man, it's a tough state for a whisky love. Cheers Jerry! 🥃

Great review however your voice over isn’t matched to the video slight delay on the video to your voice. Not a tragedy just slightly weird. All of these are very good bottles. And as long as a bottle isn’t over 150 I’m okay with it. This is my absolute cap for anything alcohol. Yes I miss some great bottles but I can’t justify anything more expensive. Enjoy!!

Yeah, their definitely is a law of diminishing returns with more and more expensive bottles and how much is reasonable to spend on a bottle of barley water should definitely have a limiter. Sorry about the glitch on the video! It's a confusing one to me as we record the audio and video together and don't separate the track. I tried watching it back again and couldn't find it being out of synch but I believe you. Hopefully it's an isolated thing. Alberta has a 5% tax but there are some online stores that the price you see is what you pay (these are the best stores to purchase online out of Province). Alberta province online sales to another province and you may be subject to the province of destination tax rate which is much higher than Alberta. Plus shipping costs comes into play as well. The real bargin is to the Albertans.

@@MrEgyPete In the Province of Ontario, they do but prices are much higher for most scotches like much higher. Alberta prices are exclusive of taxes so you add 5% plus destination taxes for delivery out of province and add shipping cost. Those are the adders which make it not so cheap. If you are local in Alberta, then you win all day everyday.
