The Perfect Introduction To Macaloney's Island Distillery: Na Braiche Single Malt Canadian Whisky

4 ай бұрынWhen starting to explore a new distillery have you ever wondered where you should start first? If the distillery is Macaloney's Island Distillery I have your answer. Today I am reviewing the Macaloney's Island Distillery Na Braiche Single Malt Canadian Whisky, a whisky that is, in my opinion, the perfect introduction to this young west coast distillery. Macaloney's was founded in 2016 and has made headlines for it's award winning whisky as well as being targeted by the Scotch Whisky Association in a lawsuit. The Na Braiche Canadian Single Malt Whisky is matured in Portuguese Red Wine STR Barriques. These type of casks were created and made famous by the late Dr. Jim Swan who helped set up the cask maturation program at Macaloney's as well as countless other distilleries. Macaloney's uses this cask type quite extensively. The Na Braiche is bottled at 46% is non-chill filtered and natural colour. The Na Braiche also was priced at a much lower price than other whiskies from this distillery which definitely grabbed my attention. Thanks for your video. Very well researched! We're glad to hear you enjoyed the Na Braiche Whisky. Currently it's available only through BC Liquor Stores, however, we will be expanding the distribution of this whisky further afield in the near future! It will also be available in the US, UK, Germany, and Switzerland later this year!

Thanks to trading samples with foodquig for the last couple of years, I have been fortunate enough to taste several things from this wonderful distillery. They were all fantastic. I'm glad to hear that Quig was able to get some samples from Macaloney's out to you. Sounds like you enjoyed them! From what the distillery commented this whisky should see some U.S. distribution later this year. And yeah, I couldn't do my first review from Macaloney's without mentioning Dr. Swan, it would have felt wrong not to mention his involvement here. Cheers buddy 🥃

In the same boat as Glenora with respect to their battle on the naming. I have always wanted to give it a try. Gotta hook up with the distillery for a tour/visit. Love the risks they are taking. Very much a trailblazer in the Canadian Single Malt category. Great review and reflection. Sounds very scotch like. Love chocolate notes in my whisky. Cheers.

Yeah such a similar story to Glenora. I was lucky to get to tour Glenora in Cape Breton so it would be fun to tour Macaloney's to compare the two as they both focus on Canadian Single Malt. Hope you find some Macaloney's in your glass someday soon. Sounds like this one may get a broader Canadian distribution later this year. Looking forward to your Glenfarclas lineup review man. The price difference on this compared to other Macaloney's products is dramatic and, I think, positive. The distillery followed up with a comment and it sounds like it is only available at the B.C. Liquor store for the moment but a broader distribution to the rest of Canada, U.K., U.S., Germany and Switzerland is expected later this year. Thanks for watching Jon! Cheers neighbour! 🥃

Another great video and review Matt! Thanks! I am fortunate to live a short drive from this distillery. The tour is definitely worthwhile and they have a great bar where you can try the range, as well as their excellent beer, Twa Dog. I haven't tried this bottling though, but will hunt it out. I've got a few of their cask strength versions of their core range and they are incredible! The Glenloy in particular. Also want to get some of their recent peated bottlings!

Thanks James! I'll definitely take a tour next time I'm by the Distillery. I've had my fair share of Twa Dogs back and appreciate the Robbie Burns literary nod. I have tried 2 of the Washington Peat bottlings and they are super fascinating. Will be at least reviewing the European Moscatel version soon. I would mention, since you are already acquainted with some bottles of their cask strength releases and the Glenloy that maybe you should try this one first before buying. It is a profile that I feel familiar with from some of their other Portuguese STR Red Wine cask offerings. That way you may not be retreading the same ground. That said I'm a "collect 'em all" sort of person with distilleries I love so if you're looking for it I believe it is exclusively at the B.C. Liquor store until a broader distribution later this year. Cheers my friend 🥃

I got a bottle of the Glenloy batch 5. Wonderfully young and spirit forward. Cask strength at 57.8% in cask of bourbon, recharred red wine and sherry. Great review Matt.

Glad you were able to grab the Kildara Peter! I tend to come to the same conclusion with most of their whiskies. Tasty but youthful, which is pretty encouraging from a young distillery. Can't wait to see where things go in the future. Cheers buddy 🥃

Great review & passion about some of your local distillery, Matt...Hope to see them arrive here at some point (& of course Shelter Point too). What would I expect ? Indeed a natural presentation as you said, at least a Bourbon matured version as you said (a bit like Cotswolds does, who relies a lot on STR too & has seen Dr Swan too) & some hints of "terroir" if it makes sense...I'm so glad some of our distilleries now do that & are bringing something different to the table as well...Price wise, indeed, a more affordable expression of a new distillery could help indeed jump in the wagon...Cheers, and looking forward for your celebration live this week end ! 👍🥃

Thanks Greg! The distillery commented on the video and said that their should be distribution into the U.K., Germany and Switzerland later this year but no word on France. Hopefully Macaloney's and Shelter Point are found on the shelves of places like LMDW in the future. Good comparison to Cotswolds, a lot of similarities. Using local barley and being a coastal distillery kilning the malt with local peat feels like it is practically screaming for a bourbon cask so we can discover that "terroir." This isn't available here as far as I know, it sounds very interesting though. We do get Shelter Point and I have the CS and Smoke Point which I love. I try and sample new to me distilleries in a bar first but it's not always possible. I have a shelf of shame with various shelf turds collected over the years, it's all part of whisk(e)y life. Some people start foaming at the mention of STR, I couldn't care less so long as it tastes good.

You're correct Peter, it's not in the U.K. yet, but Macaloney's commented and mentioned it will be available in the U.K. later this year, which is exciting as it will be nice to have more Canadian Single Malt representing Canadian Whisky instead of the more typical corn or rye. The Shelter Point and the Cask Strength are both great Canadian Whiskies, glad you've got access to those! On STR, I don't hunt it down and won't pay a premium for it, but if I find one in my glass, as you put it "I couldn't care less so long as it tastes good." Cheers eh! 🥃

I've been intrigued by Macaloney's, Shelter Point and Two Brewers BUT, being Canadian distilleries they don't seem to have enough production to distribute to a large consumer base province such as Ontario. Add to the fact their special/limited releases seem to get sold off directly from the distillery from what I hear. None of them make their way to here which is truly unfortunate. It looks like Shelter Point released a 10 year old so I agree with you regarding an age stated release.

They all do struggle with with broader distribution and larger markets, however I believe they are all starting to address this. Macaloney's actually commented in the chat here that "Currently it's available only through BC Liquor Stores, however, we will be expanding the distribution of this whisky further afield in the near future! It will also be available in the US, UK, Germany, and Switzerland later this year!" Sounds promising that it may make it's way to you in Ontario. None of this helps with the single casks/ limited releases sorry to say. The Distillery website shop does ship to Ontario but then you are paying shipping on it as well. Good to hear from you Rohit. Nice spot on the Flying V retro logo! Love the classics and since my team has a identity crisis with colours and logo it gives me lots of options! I should ask, if you have a team in the NHL is it the Pens, Flyers, Devils or someone else? Cheers eh! 🥃

Non chilled filtered and no colour, that’s my kinda whiskey, but hard to find in Toronto so far. What do u think of Alberta Premium Whiskey I believe it’s at 60% Maybe duty free might have them The one you are reviewing Cheers.

Yeah the integrity presentation is on point here which is great to see. Macaloney's commented on the video regarding distribution of this whisky and said "Currently it's available only through BC Liquor Stores, however, we will be expanding the distribution of this whisky further afield in the near future! It will also be available in the US, UK, Germany, and Switzerland later this year!" So perhaps later this year it could be available in Ontario. In regards to Alberta Premium I have enjoyed batch 1 & 2 of the Cask Strength Rye but haven't purchased any of the more recent releases. I have only limited experience with other Alberta Premium whiskies outside of my university days :p Cheers eh! 🥃
