I finally learned the lesson to focus on quantity instead of quality. I wrote two of my best songs and did the production in 7-10 days. You can focus on quality in the end stage of the songs. Just be ok with wroting bad songs. After a while the good songs will be written too. I've been writing songs for twenty years and I only just realised that quantity is better than quality. Finish them, and learn from your mistakes.

You mentioned that people should listen to their own song more. I think the main problem here is when you listen to your song so much you'll almost be immune to actually pick up the errors. The best think to do then is to allow yourself to take a pause and revisit it later. (This is just my own experience and may not necessarily work with everyone).

Re: point 5, this is something I haven't heard said aloud a lot. Through quantity does comes quality. In 2005 I tried to write 1 song a week for a year, including mixing and everything. At the end of the year I had 46 songs, obviously not all masterpieces but nothing else has improved my songwriting as much as that effort. It also helped me to find my "voice" in broad sense of the word. And I did have enough good songs for about 1,5 albums.

Just ordered your book. One thing though. Number 5. Yes. Write as many songs as possible and work on the craft of songwriting. But I think also maybe learn 100 songs first. And study their structure. And I should say I’ve been stuck in a world of 8 bar guitar loops. Need to break out if that.

using the same key and sounds on every song i compose helped me a lot to get them finished. nowadays i only use piano, strings, bass guitar and electronic drums like an 808 or linn and thats it. it may seems kind of counter productive but the less i fussed about sounds the better and also make sure my DAW is set up to have a good working mix right from the get go.

Picking up the book today. All 5 of these resonated with me. But #5 really clicked...in my first year I’ve written only about 6 songs.

Number 5 should be Number 1 on the list. It is by far the most important. I have a folder on my PC called "Finishing"....yes....it is the "finishing" folder. I don't have any other songs in the folder until that song is complete. It works.

I’ve played guitar half my life so coming up with songs are easy. Just recently I’ve started to write lyrics (in my head) to some of them. Seriously can’t get past an intro of lyrics 😢

I'm on the technical/dj/producer side but I really think most people can easily ignore the sound/technical part if the songwriting and the substance of the song is good. Just think about how many people used to listen and ENJOY music on cheap radios or cassette players with trash speakers/headphones or nowdays on smartphone/laptop speakers. Also there are a lot of indie/bedroom songs that have popped up lately with basically no mixing and mastering and people still love them for the melody, lyrics, feeling etc. So while the sound is very important and definitely a big boost please don't stress too much on it and definitely don't prioritize it over the substance of the song.

About writing without thinking about theory - man I can so relate to that. If I don't let myself do whatever my hands, my voice or my mind wants to do and play with it I'm never gonna come up with new stuff. And I also know what you mean about analyzing your music retroactively. For example there was a song I wrote in 4/4 and I couldn't figure out how to write the rhythm for a specific part and than I found out I skipped a beat so I had on 3/4 measure, and it made it sound really cool. Never would have done it I would have though about theory and notation in the first place.

My notes 1.Structure/Storytelling Your song needs to be structured so the song is functional, and easy to understand. Make sure your sections are set in stone and clear. 2. Sound Production There’s two sides; technical & instrumental. Usually you write the music first. You have to think about the blend of the song. You can have killer lyrics, but it won’t draw people in if the sound isn’t good. They come for the sound and stay for the story. 3. Sound Performance Your song can sound great, but you have to have meaning and it needs to be written well. The parts of the song have to sound great live so that it has life. Don’t be a rocking chair, figure out when to be laid back or when not to be. 4. Listen Listen to your music closely. Every small detail should be fine tuned, but the big picture has to work as well. If you don’t pay attention, listeners will pay attention to how you didn’t. 5. Quantity not Quality Focus on what you’re doing now. Don’t half-write a song, but don’t overwrite it either. You won’t get anywhere by writing crappy music because you rushed. Practice everyday. Write all the way through everyday. Don’t stop halfway. The quality will come on its own.

About "good performance" vs "quantize everything" - if I may add my personal intake on this - I don't think it's black and white. I often correct my timing but not "quantizing", i.e. leaving the imperfections of the performance but consciously deciding whether to put it exactly on the bit, or a bit later or earlier. This is especially important when playing chords on a keyboard - making all the notes play at the exact same time will sound fake, but if you just move the notes around a bit to tight the rhythm without quantizing it still sounds good.
