I was looking forward to hearing more on the schematic design phase in relation to what the client wants. What happens before you put pencil to paper to come up with a concept? Consultation with the client etc..

Thank you Mr. Drew Paul for your videos, they're very informative specially to me who's thinking of pursuing Architecture when I go to college. And I'm still praying if it God's will for me, to be an architect or not. I'm a Senior Highschool student here in the Philippines. :) Thanks again. God bless you!

I went to college to become an architect and flunked out. I should've studied up before I started. I didn't understand the material, and I spent my time being anxious instead of starting projects because I had no idea what I was doing. Now I'm 28 and want a career, but I don't know what I want to do with my life 😔

When you choose the material, do you usually have a brand preference or do contractors make suggestions/give options?

I would have started with a brief of what should be in the final design. eg. for a house, the budget, number of bedrooms, etc.

That’s a very important step. We call that Programming. As far as the typical AIA contracts are concerned, that’s an additional service outside the scope of the contract. But a doctor couldn’t prescribe something without first diagnosing the problem. Programming is a mandatory step as far as I’m concerned.

Hello I recently finished high school and looking forward to study architectural design next year at uni. People have told me that studying architecture takes forever and after that I don't even get any Job, is that true? Is it hard to find a Job as an architect?
@DrewPaulBell
@DrewPaulBell 7 жыл бұрын
+ZOOM8 it depends on the job market. It takes a lot of money to build buildings, so our industry swings with the economy. There are obviously some architecture jobs because this industry is still here as it has been for thousands of years 🙄 lol. But if the market is down, yes, it can be hard to find a job, (or WHEN it goes down, it might be hard to KEEP a job.)

I'm finding that many clients in the single family residential market don't want to pay for the last two phases, so I've been mainly providing the first three... But maybe this has to do with me not being licensed (yet) :)
@DrewPaulBell

+Ara Hovsepyan Design I think a lot of people underestimate the work it takes to build a building. Since they don't understand how many things can go wrong or how much work goes into it, they don't think they should pay for it. But every industry is like this. I know people who work in video and webpage design and everybody wants a music video for $500 when it will probably be $20,000. They want a webpage for $200 when it will probably be $5,000, and everybody wants to pay $200,000 for a house that should cost $750,000. You have to just expect it and deal with it by managing expectations, bothering people until they pay you, and firing clients who you know aren't going to be realistic. IMHO. (It's still a little early in my career for me to give an opinion on how to deal with clients, but this is my theory so far lol)
@arahovsepyan
@arahovsepyan 6 жыл бұрын
hahah, I agree. I haven't had trouble billing for SD, DD, CD, and permitting - I meant they don't want the entity designing the house to help bid out to contractors and provide construction administration, so they don't tend to want those in their contract, but, I am super early in my career as well..

Question .. Do architects design the Pipe ways and stuff like wirings or is that others persons work?
@DrewPaulBell
@DrewPaulBell 8 жыл бұрын
+iamAX 830 it depends on what you mean by pipe ways. A you would mostly likely hire a plumbing specialist or subcontractor to size the pipes and lay out a riser diagram. But then the architect needs to make sure the lines fit in the wall and floor systems. We layout the electrical stuff like lights, switches, and outlets. That's usually just shown as a diagram but sometimes you want to put a switch right inside a door but the door is close to a perpendicular wall and the framing doesn't provide enough room. There's also HVAC ducts. Any work I have done on those has been tweaking base plans from a mechanical engineer so I didn't have to size anything but I've had work with that kind of thing and make adjustments to it. Thanks for the question.

And yes from where can i get AIA building codes in pdf?
@DrewPaulBell
@DrewPaulBell 6 жыл бұрын
You could check out Architectural Graphic Standards. This will give you just about all the technical info you need. I recommend the ninth edition because it's laid out nicely and the newer ones are over priced. Here's a link: amzn.to/2DSc527 Then for architectural design basics, I haven't surveyed all the books out there, but I really like Frank Ching's book, Form Space and Order. It is pretty thorough, and he describes cool concepts in a way that's easy to understand: amzn.to/2pzGQon The AIA doesn't publish building codes. (They do publish Graphic Standards which I mentioned above.) We use the IBC family of codes here in the US. I think you can buy the codes from their website in PDF, or check out UPCODES.com. Reading the codes is generally not free. There are people who write codes for their career. So there has to be a way to pay those people to standardize building construction in a way that keeps society safe. It's a lot of work and they have to make a living. If you're just starting to learn more about architecture, before purchasing codes, I would suggest one of Frank Ching's other books, Building Codes Illustrated: amzn.to/2IQdo5w

In which part do you talk with the engineer or generall negotiate and calculate the physics of the building so it Stands up and stands up long and doesnt tilt AND doesnt become hothouse or impossible to build without annoying draft. Is that 2 or 5? Phase?
@DrewPaulBell
@DrewPaulBell 8 жыл бұрын
You do that throughout SD, DD, and CD, and it's quite possible in CA. It all has to happen as the design changes. Going to a consultant is most likely to happen during DD and CD, but the architect has to be pretty close to a good solution before going to a consultant in the first place. It's really costly to figure out the building is slated to be a hotbox during CD's, so the architect should design it to not have something catastrophically wrong from the beginning.

Speaking of these stages... I'm really having a difficult time with fees... Usually, prospects/clients want free schematics before they engage with doing the project with you... But some of them, after giving them the design, they disappear and you end up seeing your design built already by foreman and laborers... T_T i live in the Philippines and it happens here... I'm not sure if it's the same anywhere...

+Rovinna Ferrer Greetings first, I have experienced the same in Egypt, I think you can ask for/condition a (down payment) for your schematic designs, as a part of the total commission, in case the other side refuse, do not handle him your work, & add it to your own portfolio, may be some other client ask for it.

+Rovinna Ferrer any form of drawings whether construction drawings or a simple sketch is part of the architect's instruments of service. meaning, you own the copyrights to those drawings and under the law cannot be used for reproduction or use for contract documents. always highlight this in the contract. check guidelines of the PRC. thanks.
