Honestly that book was such a waste of time IMO. I genuinely thought it was going to get better at some point but it kept dragging on and on and on and on. Really disappointing considering the fact that people said it was ‘the scariest book of all time’. eh

I think Rooney does an amazing job at capturing a certain feeling that a lot of people at the protagonists age have felt. It hits deeply for some people, especially since it sums up a certain wistful, lost, sad or lonely feeling. But I can imagine that if you haven't experienced it, it just seems mediocre, annoying even.

Lily, I feel Mateo’s pain when it comes to trying to understand what the fuck is going on in a story, but not for the same reasons as him. He has a language barrier, I have psychological issues. When I was taking schizophrenia medication in 2004, it dulled me to the point where I had no idea what was going on when I watched Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex. Turns out that show would be difficult to understand no matter what someone’s state of mind was. Damn, that shit’s eerie.

Terry Pratchett's discworld is legit on another level. The writing is some of the most craftful you'll ever read, its funny as f°°k (as a fellow Aussie the humour is just perfectly absudist and beautifully constructed), and also definitely gives you things to think about without even trying. The characters are just phenomenal. No idea how much research you've done into them, but the earlier ones are much wackier, and than later; they become a little more, dare i say, critiqued in the later ones. Id say at least half are stand alones, but there are series within that even use those stand alones. My series within recommendations would be the Moist Von Lipwig: Going Postal, Making Money and Raising Steam; The Death series, (i forget the order but): Mort, Reaper Man, Hogfather, Thief of time(a personal fav); and Tiffany Aching series is really good. Reading chronologically is fine, but there are some gems that will take a long time to get to by that route *cough* Monstrous Regiment *cough cough*. I am very keen to check our some of these, i know my brother has a copy of 'S', so I'll have to steal it.

Hey Lily, if you're going to read Discworld, I'd not recommend starting with book #1. The series takes a little bit to find its stride. I think a good starter book for you would be Guards! Guards! or Moving Pictures.

discworld is my favourite book series of all time !! it has a very british sense of humour and i definitely recommend looking up where to start as there’s 41 books divided into smaller subseries 😅😅 as a general rule, and what 99% of discworld fans will tell you is, don’t start with the first book - instead, have a look at the different discworld subseries and just pick whichever one vibes with you the most !! i know it must seem very convoluted but trust me there’s heaps of recommendations online as to where the best place is to start :)

Sanderson is my favorite author. I’ve read almost all of his books. However, I don’t know if mistborn is the right book to b introduced to his works, only because it is a trilogy. He has some standalones if you want to read something smaller then a trilogy. If you decide to read mistborn, be aware that it’s part of the grater cosmere; a shared universe in which several of his series take place. They are stories on their own with very little overlap among them. You can read mistborn only and be totally fine, but if you keep reading more books or series from the cosmere, you will start noticing they are related.
@DuffyHimself
@DuffyHimself 2 жыл бұрын
Mistborn is generally accepted as the best introduction to Brandon Sanderson. Some people start with Elantris because it's his first published book, but it's arguably his "worst" book. It's not bad but it's not great, like most of his other books.

In my opinion, Mistborn is the best starting point for the cosmere. I also get starting with Warbreaker (because it's a standalone), but Mistborn is definitely better. I've seen people recommend the Emperor's Soul as a starting point. It's only a novella, so there's not that much of a commitment. It also features Brandon's best prose (in my opinion) and has overall not much of a cosmere significance.

Currently reading House of Leaves & so far.... 5 star vibes; idk about scariest book in the world, that sounds like a bit much but I guess it depends on your definition of scary? It's good. Brandon Sanderson is definitely my favorite author, so I'm excited to hear your thoughts about some of his books. The Name of the Wind is amazing and 5-stars for me, but I was disappointed with the Wise Men's Fear. I got really weird (in a bad kind of way) at some point and the flaws are more noticable.
