Latin music is by far one of my genres of music. Merengue, bachata and salsa are just amazing. The best concert that I have ever been to was when “El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico” came to Australia for their 50th anniversary. It was just so amazing. The music, the dancing, the atmosphere. So perfect. Willie Colon was good too but El Gran Combo were beyond amazing.

The best part of it is that at the end, there is the protest feeling and the history telling in the lyrics, but still you can dance it! simply genious!

DCampusano1 - You're very right, and it's funny. I've read blogs about it: "are Brazilians latinos?" Pleazzzz. I'm Brazilian. My dad says Portuguese is a useless language, and that we'd be much better speaking Spanish because it only served to isolated us from the Latin America. In other words, we've been isolated because of the language barrier. Ok, that's an exaggeration, Portuguese is beautiful. But...true it hasn't helped. Only recently (internet? zumba?) we started to massively consume Latin music and culture. Hey, more power to us! But I promise you, we've always been proud of being part of Latin America. ..."se tu eres latino saca tu bandera..." (Gozadera, my favorite song) :)

There's a greater connection between Veracruz and Venezuela. In Spanish colonial times, there was immense trade between Maracaibo and Veracruz, as there was between Cartagena, Colombia and Veracruz. There was tremendous cross-pollination of idioms, accents, foods, and musical styles. What also facilitated this cross-pollination was the fact that the majority of Spanish sailors were Andalusians, people with great love of percussive instruments, "zapateado", and guitar music from any type of guitar and harp.
