5 Surprising Lessons I Learned Simplifying Life / Hello fellow souls 🍃
It isn't always easy to live intentionally, especially if your values are different from the social norms. I feel like many minimalists and people who live simple lifestyle can relate to this.
So, in this video I talk about how I simplified my life, things I've learned on the journey and how is it to live this more minimalist lifestyle now after 5+ years.
Hope you like the video and get inspiration and ideas on how to simplify your life! 😊

Issue with older generations not understanding. I'm in my 70's and it took me too damn long to get off the "train" of wanting more stuff, keeping up with the Jones's. You're young and lucky you figured it out. The last 20 years have been the happiest, realizing I don't need anymore stuff!

We made a choice when raising our two daughters to stick with entertainment that didn’t involve television babysitting, among many other lifestyle choices. They learned to be creative, use their imagination and not need constant external stimulus like so many of their friends. Fast forward 29 years and our eldest is living in Costa Rica with her husband a very minimalist lifestyle as they can travel out of a few backpacks. Our youngest is, essentially, back country living and building a 25’ x 25’ geodesic dome to live in, wood heating and also very minimalistic. On the flip side we recently sold everything that wouldn’t fit in four large suitcases and moved to Mexico. That was 32 years of accumulation and home, cars etc. We have embraced this living style and new country but we have a long way to go beyond the physicality of the changes. Our eldest, just today, thanked us for raising them the way we did as it opened up so many possibilities beyond the social expectations of friends and family as her and her sister are able to employ critical thinking skills without the trappings of those expectations that are the result of various external pressures. Basically, we are the black sheep and we love our life with less, living slower and appreciating what we need vs what we want as we realize the want is often a result of being marketed to and bowing to those social pressures of accumulating stuff.

Only just discovered your channel and really enjoying your videos. I can relate to them more than the ones living in a cottage or wooden hut in the middle of nowhere. It's a more realistic existence. Even if we live in an urban area, it can still be slow, peaceful, simple living. It's what we make of it that matters. We can always escape to the countryside to enjoy all it has to offer. I think you have a very balanced view of slow living. I'm 63 and have always lived a slow life. It was more hectic when the kids were home, but the last 20 years or so have been so peaceful. I just enjoy living in the moment, taking joy from the simple things in life, and doing as I please... and not what others think I should be doing.

I really resonate with a lot of what you are saying and live a simple life myself. I have noticed that I have a slightly different take on the "quality vs quantity" aspect of friendships. I have worked in service and bars for many years and I have really learned to love a casual friendship. I am a bartender twice a week (currently my only gig - thank god for low rent) and love seeing all the local regulars. I do not really hangout with these people when not at work but I love getting to see everybody and chat for a little while here and there and running into them in the streets. I do have a few close friends, but also really appreciate having so many "more subtle" connections with people. The more love you give, the more love you get, the more love you give. Great content my man. subscribed

The phone sound is really good. 😀 I am in no way a minimalist, but I buy very few new things these days, especially technology wise, because I think a lot of things don't evolve anymore, it's just the producers making new models out of greed, not because they've come up with something new. And in a way it makes me sad that I've already experienced peak mobile phone, peak car, peak houses and it just seems to be going ever increasingly fast downhill.
@zazhou

Hi, perhaps the peak item is not a peak and simply a plateau with all the other items that suffice? What is the point of a peak item if one does not use or need all of its capabilities? Have a happy, simple day!

I've done a similar thing with Christmas approaching. There's really any "thing" within reason I want. It's more about experiences and things I want to do, things that can't literally be bought. Aside from a cabin on some land, but I don't think Santa can fit that in his sleigh. It'll come with time.

Great points Steve! Recently I started getting rid of a lot of things and selling some of them online and it feels so good to do that. Having only the things I need! I have to say though, that if I have only few things that I really need, I would like them to be high quality, because if there’s something I use on a daily basis and it brings me value I want it to be high quality and pleasant to use, so for example, I would prefer using a high quality phone instead of a cheap one, again, just because it is one of my few things I own and use everyday frequently :)

I've watched (binged) a lot of videos with similar topic as this one. I've felt like most of those have been repetitive and I did not get much value. Just few minutes in your video and I've brought out my all-around notebook and wrote down how I want my life to be 10-12 years from now. Your decision to work 6 hrs, choosing time over potential earnings, reinforces my desire to work less hours and have more time living my life and spending it how I want. I'm not there yet. I have a lot of work to do to have that option but this gave me a lot of inspiration and drive. Thank you! This is my first video from your channel and will definitely check out your other videos. Couldn't agree more. One has to define his/her own way of minimalist life. Couple of years ago I started creating a list of material things I need (except for obvious items like spoon/fork or bed). Today this list contains 3 items which is bike, ebook reader and fishing rod and I feel like I realy do not need anything more. Crucial thing was to realize the difference between my true needs and desires. Not all what I desire is what I truly need. Some of my desires can make me even unhappy as I realized I was overwhelmed by possessions. In fact I didn't possess those things, they just possessed me as I had to take care of them, clean them, maintain them... As burned out workaholic I am still working on simplifying my life, but never been so hopeful before...

Wise words from a young man, I'm probably twice your age and have only learned the same over recent years. There is nothing more important than your health for a start so no experimental jabs for me, secondly without love, is life worth living? Several years ago, I have discovered for myself something that I call "wasting time productively". When I would find myself unable to address what I considered priorities, I would procrastinate on them by doing what is important to me, but is not a priority. In that way, I understood that I am still procrastinating, but there is some good coming from it. Hence, your speech around 5:40--5:45 resonated with me .

7:30 _"You can be a minimalist and still be an a$$hole."_ This is true. In fact, we could replace "minimalist" with probably any other group or process identifier -- rich person, poor person, spiritual person, materialist person, etc. -- and it would still be a true statement. Our practices are *how* we choose to live, but our *selves* are who -- *who* -- we are _regardless the group or process that we identify as/with._

It resonates so much with me because I realized I was asked so often what I want (including me asking myself) that I came to the conclusion that I don't want anything right now. I am happy where I am and not striving the ideal life is ok and totally fine!

Thank you, Seve! And again everything you say resonates with me so much. It's so great to hear someone sharing thoughts of not receiving any gifts. It's exactly how I feel myself. And so few people around me can in fact understand that. Also regarding mental clutter - it may be even a heavier load we carry compared to the physical stuff we have. Your question about the colour of life made me think a lot. I can't think of any colour. Seems that my life is transparent. I'm glad I found your channel!

Transparent, that's interesting! Made me immediately think of letting life flow naturally and not getting stuck in one phase or narrative of your life 🌱

Maybe rethink the gift giving/receiving thing? Giving a gift gives pleasure to the giver, it allows them to feel generous and loving. I understand that you are talking about unnecessary flash/dazzle/expense. But taking someone out for coffee, drawing a small picture, writing a letter of appreciation can give both giver and receiver a little glow!

Moving far from a 250k city to a 1k village is, 3 years in, an interesting experience. Gone are trophy hierarchies. The solitude forces, and helps, you to enjoy time alone. Nature is always here to cheer you up or vice versa. I felt it was harder to be alone in the city. You felt extra isolated seing all people, you had no relation to, all the time. It has a bunch of downsides but mostly practical ones. A bit surprisingly good sides dominates this far.

@@TheTRELOS7 George, the Finnish word ruska has nothing to do with Russia 😄 It means the phenomenon when leaves change colours from green to yellow and then red. So no worries, my content has nothing to do with Russia and politics. I've been keeping myself updated and aware of the horrors there almost daily too. Very difficult times for people there, I have a friend that lives in Kyiv 😢 You can google "Ruska Finland" to learn more and see some nice nature pics if you want to

Great video! I find that after spending so much of my time earning more and more money and gaining more and more things, that it was not spent well with these goals. Once I had what I really just needed, then more meant very little. I would buy new toys and technological gadgets, and found I did not use them. I did not take the time to learn how to use them. They added nothing to my life but more mental clutter that I just couldn't keep up with. Getting rid of most of these things was very liberating for my mind and my time. In the west we are trained to be consumers. Indeed the economy and it's future drive consumerism. It is an ever increasing pyramid scheme of an economy. And it seems to be destroying the quality of our lives, and doing harm to our world. Our food supply system is a good example. Industrial farming has taken over the role of raising our food. In my grandparents generation they almost all had gardens. Not hobby gardens, but real food producing gardens that they relied on. These produced good foods with a denser nutrition value than the industrially farmed food products we see in the grocery stores. This is why home grown foods taste so much better and have a far more robust nutrition content. Growing locally either for yourselves or from small farms that practice organic methods is so much better for us and for the world. It is good to see the younger generations questioning this consumer driven lifestyle. I think minimalism as an adopted religion could be a problem. But just using less and less in our lives is finding the balance as you seem to indicate in your video. Good stuff. Thanks for taking the time to post it.

I'm going to point out something to you, Seve. First, you are insiteful for a man of your age and that will serve you well. Second, consider sailing. I would say that to anyone wanting to live simply as it forces you to reduce and, for what it's worth, makes for an interesting life. And third, thanks for your message. Ciao
