Your statements about get out and make memories hit home. My husband put off retiring for years and he always wanted to travel. We bought a fifth wheel and took a few trips while he worked. When he retired, he took over 2 years to decide on a motorhome. We out a deposit on one, then covid hit. Everything closed. The dealer agreed to hold the motorhome for us for a while to give some campgrounds close by a chance to open. Two weeks after we put the deposit down, my husband was diagnosed with stage 4 esophageal cancer and passed away 8 weeks later. I lost the deposit and gave up the idea of camping. In February of this year I put a deposit on a small 20 ft. Travel trailer. Now I am waiting on it to be built due to supply shortages and labor shortages. I pray I live to get it and have a few years of pleasure before I pass. Don't delay life because you may not live to enjoy it.

Every point was spot on. Full time RV'ing was my wife's lifelong dream, hitting the road, seeing the sights and making new friends. I made her dream a reality shortly after my mom passed away, so we sold our home, vehicles, furniture and I basically quit my job, 7 years later and many thousands of miles later I have absolutely no regrets about this decision.

The best RV is the one you can afford. Start with what's in your budget and move up as your budget allows.

Ex-RV sales guy here. I was always up front with my guests and discussed many of these topics with them. I agree on the not waiting, get going with the fun and memories. I would often tell people to rent before buying and that they need to be handy with tools. When asked I told everyone these aren’t built to be lived in b/c the appliances weren’t built for everyday living among other items. Also, I went one step further - - - If we didn’t have what they wanted I sent them to other dealerships and had them speak with someone I knew who was honest, which there are many. Now you have 6 things an RV salesperson will almost never tell you. Later….

This is incredible! "You're going to die" was like a slap in the face. Lost my mom, mother-in-law and my husband of 45 years ...all in the past year. And here I sit wasting time researching day after day after day. Thank you Matt for a reality check. Overall Bottom line I guess is: have an emergency fund ready to support you when that "down time" occurs. ~S

For those that struggle for long periods of time trying to find the perfect RV, here's a reality check. The house you purchased was not perfect either. Yet you made some awesome memories in that house. God bless.

The buy it today part hit home. My dad worked for 40 years, retired, started making plans and died 6 months later. You have a good heart and I respect that.

It's like a regular house with really thin walls. My husband and I were full time for 11 years. We had the best adventures and made great friends. He passed in March and I loved our life so much that I will continue this life style. I must say that an extended warranty was a good investment for us.

Great video! I retired in 2013 at age 55 from Federal Service. My 2 children as they were growing up tent camped, then later we owned 3 pop up campers. My children who are 31 and 35 now have such great memories of camping. My wife and I always wanted a Motorhome and upon my retirement we sold our house, down sized to another home and bought a Coachmen Leprechaun which we used for 5 years. We only sold it because my wife’s parents were having health issues and her dad was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and we convinced them to move in with us. It took us about 6 months to sell the house we had and purchase another house that had enough room to accommodate my wife’s parents. We always recognized when we bought the RV that the day may come that would require us to help our parents which we are honored to do. We then had to sell the RV because we could no longer use it due to my wife’s parents condition. We are grateful that we had the chance for 5 years to follow our dream but are equally honored to have the ability to help her parents. We trust that if it is meant to be we will one day buy another RV and get to travel more again. It is important to not put off following your dreams!

I've been watching your channel for over a month now as my wife and I contemplate purchasing our second fifth wheel. At first I thought your videos were a bit silly and comedic but soon realized there was some real value in your channel and understood that your presentational tactics are purposeful to keeping it on the light side of things. As I continued watching I actually grew more fond of you and the others who join you in your presentations. With that said, after watching this latest addition I would in fact enjoy purchasing an RV from you and giving you a good ole fashioned handshake. Keep doing exactly what you are doing Matt, responsible people have to work for a living and you've taken your career of selling RV's to heart, which most of us hard working people can appreciate.

Concerning point #3, before retiring, an older coworker of mine once mentioned that the one regret he had in life was that his wife always wanted to have a pontoon boat. He always put off buying one saying that would be great later for retirement. However, before that happened, she came down with a bad case of Alzheimer and needed full time care. She never got what she wanted because he put it off. So when my wife said she wanted a camper, we immediately went out, looked a many campers, decided on one we thought was great and bought it. After enjoying it for a year, we found several points about our first one we did not like and traded it off on another more suitable one. So at this point we really like the one we have and our dealer took good care of the trade off. Matt, you hit the nail on the head!!

Your Dad's story touched home. My Dad was seriously physically handicapped. He had his own Agri-based business. Hard physical labor involved. Doctors tried to convince Dad to go on Disability.....he wouldn't hear of it. In the early 80's Farmers were going broke, after several customers who owed large amounts to him filed bankruptcy, Dad had to close his store that he loved. The day after he closed the store he died. Broken heart. He was 59. He was one of the smartest men I ever knew: He was a Fulbright Scholar: taught Agriculture in Persia in the early 50's. He easily could have been a College Professor but he loved Farmers and Farming. Like you carry your Dad's handiman tool, I use a cane due to my physical disabilities.....it was my Dads cane. Every time I use it, it's like holding my Dad's hand. God Bless our Dads Matt! You're a hell of a good guy, your Dad would be proud of you!

This is exactly what I needed to hear about buying an RV or trailer.

Thanks. You have pulled back the curtain and exposed what anyone anticipating the purchase of an RV should know. Over my lifetime I have owned several RV's from a towable to motor homes. Buyers need to exercise good judgement and common sense. Don't overburden your budget, understand that unexpected situations will arise and all will entail some form of cost. As I approach my 90th year, I no longer own an RV but true to what you said, I have many, many beautiful memories that my wife and I shared over the years while RVing.

“You have to plan your trips, but just know that your trips don’t always go as planned”....Matt, that statement is the basic premise of life. Wow!

Number 3 was great. We spent too much time researching our first rv and it was traded in two years. We did not research much for our next RV and it was used regularly, for 12 years and 4 years later we sold it for nearly nothing just to get rid of it. Our current RV was not researched at all. I know there will be times I regret the purchase, but I also know that our family will enjoy it more than if staying at a motel.

As a salesman myself, been honest is what puts you on another level! Keep up the great work. 💪👍

I purchased a small Forest River Sunseeker on the Ford Transit chassis model 2380. I bought it new 2019 in June It has 26,000. Plus I love the wide open spaces the great big star filled night sky. I love the Desert 🌵 I love the Mountains 🏔 I love the California northern coast and the Florida 🏖 beaches in winter. I go about 6 to 7 months a year. I gave up on the service departments and go to a park and call the mobile service guy. He comes right out and within a reasonable amount of time everything‘s repaired I didn’t wait forever he does a fantastic job and I simply pay the bill and it’s not unreasonable and it’s not a headache and it’s not waiting until they’ve screwed up your trip that you had planned when the weather was exactly what you wanted so please folks don’t be afraid to use the mobile RV Repair Companies

Makes total sense. Another thing an RV salesman won't tell you....or has no idea is: about your towing vehicle, how much it can tow. Towing information should be completely up to the customer's research and information to purchase the right RV, NOT the saleman.

I'm glad I found your channel. Thank you for this info! My husband and I had talked about getting an RV, but didn't think we could work out the finances since we were already retired. We traveled a little here and there since I'm retired from the Navy & have access to Space A flights, plus we bought into a "Vacation Club." I wish we had pursued the RV. Covid hit and we didn't get to travel or do much of anything else except a big trip last year and visit one of our kids. He just passed away two weeks ago. I'm going to sell just about everything so I Can hit the road. I miss exploring and I want to see our kids, grandkids & other family. They are all spread out across the country. Only two nieces live within 65 miles of our city in CO. Now I just need to find the best rig for my needs by the middle of November. I still have lots to learn.

Also Matt, thank you for the honest answer to my financing question at the Tampa show. I asked two sales people the same thing, and both said "No problem. It's easy", but you made it clear it would be a bad idea for me. Your honesty means so much! 😎

Some are rated for full-time living but a RV is like a house - maintenance of a home is essential to remain in it.

I can so relate to what you said in this video. My husband passed away this January. He was never interested in camping of any kind and the last 5 years of his life he was too sick to travel, so I went alone or with a girlfriend once or twice a year. I decided to buy a Class C because I didn't want to tow a TT. I did some research to decide what kind of RV I wanted and made an appointment to see 2 or 3 models and General RV. I left with a purchase agreement. Life is too short and I wanted to enjoy it while I can. I am 71 and maybe can enjoy this lifestyle for 10 years and maybe it will only be 5, but I will enjoy traveling with my 2 little dogs. As far as problems, I am on my second problem in the first month of ownership - a recall and a gas tank issue with the supply chain situation that may make finding a gas tank difficult. Coachmen is working on it. I don't regret my decision and have even decided to go to the Gulf of Mexico for 3 months this coming winter. That is an adventure I am looking forward to having. In the meantime, I will stay more local with the price of gas. Thanks for your reviews and your candid comments on each and every one.

We made so many great memories in a $3500 1982 RV. So glad we took the risk. Looking to upgrade now.

We left our jobs early to fulltime and workcamped to supplement our income. We now settled at an RV resort in Arizona in a park model. We're not rich but planned to travel in the summers. It hit home when you talked about living for today. We both have experienced health issues in the last few months. We're still hoping to travel, but who knows if we'll be able to. Don't put off living. It doesn't have to be expensive. Invest in solar, a generator, and boondockers welcome for some cheap camping. We treat ourselves with rv resorts, but not everyday

Hi Matt, you must not have any motorhomes to review. Matt, I agree with all those 5 points you made. To me the best time to buy an RV is when you can afford it, and you have to really think about how much time you will have to use it. You don't want to spend a lot of money and have the RV stored someplace where it costs a lot of money and use it twice a year. Thanks for your video.

I will be officially retired in exactly 2 weeks. We have already been visiting dealerships and watching every available video. THIS, is one very awesome and honest video! I can truly relate to the #3, as after raising 5 kiddos, we are heading to do what we have not been able to do in the last 38 years of marriage (and 35 years on the job). I'll be surprised if my wife doesn't have the Class A parked by the curb on the last day I drive home from work. If not, it will be within the first month of retirement. LOVE these videos. At 55 I just bought a new (4 me) pre owned toy hauler This is part of my dreams & bcuz I took so long (55yrs) bucket list I'm so excited 2 start my new adventure & this is also like my 1st home 4 me There's a chance I never get 2 pay it off, I might not live 15 more yrs & if I do I'll b 70 JUST DO IT! Thanks for the thoughtful presentation. Have family with RV's and with boats. Cousin's quote about boats, "First time you step on the boat and hear something, it's something breaking. If you don't hear anything, it already broke." He's owned boats for more than 50 years. Liked the comment about tomorrow's, too. So glad to have taken all the vacations and cruises with my wife while we were both able to travel easily. Now looking for that next adventure alone.

Very honest. Thank you. I think I’m guilty of taking a bit too long to buy my RV, but I’m learning about new stuff everyday and just when I think I’m ready to decide I learn another new thing.

I bought a 2020 Keystone travel trailer from a RV dealer here in San Antonio. Signed and thought the deal was done. We did the walkthrough and all was great. Beautiful inside and out. As the lot was not ready yet, they said I could leave it there at no charge and so I was glad about that. so I made a deal with them at the time of purchase. The day came for delivery, I called them up and asked if I needed to be there when the transport guy was to hook up. They said NO and that everything was fine that the transport was set for delivery. So, I said ok. About 4 hours later my RV had arrived at lot that I had rented. As I was getting out of my car I looked and I'm like OMG! You've got to be kidding me? The RV had holes in it. Front to back on both sides. The front awing was broken off and holes on the front door latch area. At the top by the awning was holes. The light on side was broken off. The back rear on the other side was scratched from top to bottom. The light where the scrapes were was broken off. And I could go on.. I called the dealership and told them what I had just received. and that I was taking pictures of all the damages. They said to send them the pictures and see what I was talking about. Luckily I took pictures when I did my 1st walkthrough and after as well. The driver was smart too because he took film before he left the dealership. Anyway, I went straight back to the dealership and it turns out when talking to the salesmen, he admitted that him and another salesmen knew about the damage to the back light and they tried to fix it with black tar. They NEVER admitted to anything about any of the other damages they had done while it was sitting on their lot. It took them about 8 days to pick it back up. I have been calling and nothing yet. It has been months now and nothing has been done yet. They did call last week and said they did NOT have an ETA when the parts were even coming in. I am in a stump mode and am paying monthly payments for something that I don't even have. I don't have my RV and NOW I don't have the lot. They couldn't hold it! I also found out that when I DO get it back, I will only have a few months IF ANY to have a warrantee left on it. I wish I knew what to do without spending more money out of pocket.. I am wondering if when I do get it back will the Title be a salvage title?

After many years of RV'ing 3 to 6 months out of the year, I have to say you did a real service to new RV'ers with this honest video! You are totally correct on all counts!!

The flip side is homes don’t break down since they aren’t moved. RVs don’t last, which suggests they should be frequently bought and sold. Gas prices are increasing. Overnights at RV parks are scare and more expensive. So ditching your life for an RV lifestyle should be reconsidered for something in-between.

Our dream was to retire and travel in an RV. I will do it by myself. Your comments about putting it off really hit home. I have to get the last kid out of high school but I think the rv will now be top of the list. Love you guys

This felt like life lessons. Thank you so much for this, Matt. I've been watching your videos for a year now and love every single one of them. After some traumatic events that happened recently, my siblings and I finally decided to get an RV instead of putting it off and coming up with "What if"s that weren't helping at all.

We were going from Michigan to Alaska in a motorhome it kept SHUTTING OFF on the highway so we kept going to different service departments between Michigan and Alaska and they kept saying it was the fuel pump and they would put another fuel pump and we went through four brand new fuel pumps finally here in Alaska guy figured out it was the wiring to the fuel pump not the fuel pump so we put in five fuel pumps when that was not even the problem 😮🧐 blessThe smart mechanic in Alaska who figured out our problem and FINALLY FIXED IT 💪😍

When I was young, my father had a dream of circumnavigating the world in a sailboat. He grew up around boats, even share/owned (with friends) a nice sloop rig on the Great Lakes, back before he had us kids. We would sit at the cottage dining table, and review brochures, we were going to wait until I was in HS by that time, my father had slipped a disk, after recovering enough from that, a few years later he had his aorta replaced. By that time, it was considered unwise to set off on that adventure. We sailed plenty of smaller boats, monohulls, and catamarans, but were never able to sail off into the sunset for 5 years as we had hoped. You shared valid points, and I appreciate this video. "Men plan, God laughs." - This quote is paraphrased and apparently has many roots.

I love hearing "This is a bad investment". You're exactly right, anyone who buys any sort of camper is going to get a negative ROI. If you go into buying your first camper understanding that you'll enjoy it way more IMO.

Thank you Matt for making this video. I agree with you on all points, 100%. I have been camping regularly for the last 35 years and my wife has been for the last 57 years (she started at 6 months of age). We have camped in a Travel-Lo, several tent side popups, a couple of hard side, A-frame trailers, a travel trailer, and now a Class-C motorhome. We live in Chicagoland and have had to have emergency service in SD. We won’t give up our house, but with retirement coming next year, we will go out a lot more. Even if you have a dealer you really trust, they won’t be able to think of everything to tell you. You will need a very experienced salesperson that is extremely ethical. When we bought our 2022 Class C, they didn’t tell us that Ford will have to take care of chassis issues. I had to find out from Coachmen. They were nice about it, but I had to find a Ford dealer in Chicagoland that would/could fix a motorhome. Not all Ford dealers would do it. Also, if your RV dealer isn’t local to you, you will need to make sure that you can get your RV serviced for warranty issues locally or expect to drive some distance to get your unit fixed. These are things you need to consider. On top of that, where are you going to store your unit. Many municipalities have laws against parking in your driveway for more than a couple of days (load and unload from a trip). There are a lot of things to consider. Is it worth it? ABSOLUTELY! Being in nature and away from the rat race, even for a week or 2 a year, will refresh you.

As a previous owner of a boat, I understand exactly what you're saying. I should be buying my Super Class C in a year or two, and your information and energy has been invaluable. Keep up the good work. PS: You make my stomach quiver every time you climb those ladders, be careful!

We never saw ourselves as RV people. When my husband retired and our kids were taking care of their own lives, we decided we hadn’t seen a lot of the country. We have a dog and didn’t want to always board him, so we decided to buy a small class c. We have loved traveling and meeting lots of interesting people along the way. We are currently waiting for our new, slightly bigger RV to arrive so we can go away for longer trips and have more experiences. We’re not getting younger, so we want to make the most of that. My only wish is that we had got one when the kids were young. I know we could have had such fun with them. Maybe we’ll have grandchildren some day to take with us.

The comment /advice 12 minutes in it the realest thing I have ever heard. We used to tent camp and while it was fun it was miserable when it rained. We bought a camper have been camping more time the past 2 summers then we have on the past 15 years of my sons life.

Very true words newbies need to know. Honestly, living/camping in our Class A is very, VERY similar to being back on a small ship in the Navy. There is little to no privacy, constant maintenance and the costs keep going up. That said, trips to Yellowstone, Florida (from Seattle), NASCAR races, the Grand Canyon, two 'rapid deployments' for funerals (40+ hours straight through, no breaks) and my favorite, going to Crater Lake (and joking with my family about how the legend of the giant crayfish sounds like a Sci-Fi Channel movie). Those are memories my family will pass on when we're gone.

When is the best time buy a RV? When you can afford to. Metrobus paid good wages. Sounds like your dad worked in what once was called the main shop. My father worked as a driver for 28 years. Retired to Florida with medical benefits and a nice amalgamated transit union pension. With social security he retired comfortably. I worked as an inspection leadman in the garage across from the main shop.

This has to be one THE most honest perspective on any endeavor that I've ever heard. Matt this was a powerful statement re: everyone will die. I am a heart doctor and I can tell you that Matt is correct. There is NO great time to do or buy anything. Do some homework and mind your money. BUT memories with others is priceless. Also RVing is NOT for everyone. RV are not made to be lived in. Just like those rollaways beds aren't meant to be slept in everyday forever. Do some homework & mind your financials....but do things with others, have some fun, be responsible, but live your life like it's golden and blessed.

Hey Matt we bought a 42 foot sailboat to sail across the Atlantic and see the waterways around the coastal areas of Europe. Wife and I became pregnant. Decided that was a limiting situation to our plans for Europe. No problem. Just keep it in the coastal areas of good old America. Worked for a little over a year. We became pregnant again. two years later we added one more to our family. Decided to sell the boat and raise our children in a more secure lifestyle. We all have the memories, the good the bad and the ugly but We have found that the bad and ugly memories fade and the good memories linger on still.

Matt, VERY GOOD video. We've been camping for 31+ years, have had 6 campers, and many memories of failures, breakdowns, water squirting through out our pop-up drenching beds, DP engine cutting out on climb through WV mountains...can't wait to get the next RV and add to the memories. You said it, RV's are not for everyone.

Love your video's Matt and I 100% agree with what you said, especially the part about tomorrow isn't promised to any of us, so take action today. My wife and I are action taking kind of people and watching your video RV reviews PLUS going to the dealers and shows to see different floor plans in person helped us to find the "perfect RV for us" within a couple of months. Seeing it on a video is NOT the same as seeing it yourself in person. We thought we knew what we wanted by doing internet research, but hated it when we saw it in person. Since purchasing our Thor Delano, we have visited both Yellowstone (before the floods) and Grand Tetons, then drove south to MS to visit friends family. Having the RV made the visit with friends and family so much comfortable, convenient and enjoyable. It also allowed us to stay much longer than we would have stayed without it. You are so right, its all about making those memories.

Now think back to the vacations or weekend trips your family took together. If you're like me, you can remember almost every day of all of them. Making memories with loved ones is much more impactful than any material thing you can give to them. Do not wait. Get out there and make those memories.

I enjoy all of your videos and I appreciate your honesty. My wife and I have been retired 10 years and we got into RVing long before retirement. I can't remember how many or what type of rv's we have had, but we both enjoyed everyone of them. Currently we own a 2016 Coachman Freelander motorhome, and a converted utility trailer that we tow behind with our side by side UTV, an extra fridge and sleeping quarters installed. We like to boondock for extended periods and sometimes need the extra refrigeration so we can travel with less fortunate family members and still avoid extra trips to the grocery store for more food. More to the point...I feel like this video boosts your credibility and I will continue watching your videos. Thanks

You are an damn good salesman!!! I have been researching this for like 4 years mainly because I cannot afford it and work reasons. I WILL be getting a motorhome very soon and I will be LIVING in it. I will make it work. My girlfriend and I will be living in it. We will figure it out. I am 51 years old and have already had a heart attack and am GOING to enjoy whatever I have left. So important are those memories because after all the stages of grief that you will suffer through after the loss of a loved one at the end of it all you have is those cherished memories that will help you reflect and get some comfort. We bought a used truck last year and it came as a package deal with a Lance 992 truck camper. I’ve always wanted a truck camper because of their versatility. We really enjoyed and now we’ve traded that camper on a 2022 Lance 1172 truck camper which should be delivered this spring. Make those memories while you can brother. Subscribed. 👍🇨🇦

Great video, so much truth to the story. When you mentioned about your dad it hit home for me. I worked on trucks for over 40 year's. And most of the time didn't like my job. But it paid the bills. I've been retired for 6 1/2 years and spend several month's a year in our 5th wheel. I do 95% of my own repairs . And helped other's. That job I worked has paid off . And we've met a lot of great people and made a lot friends ( especially when you help them with there RV's problems) But it's been a good time. Just don't forget you are going to have to adapt and improvise . Even people with deep pockets have stories to tell about RV problems.

Hey Mat. First I have to say I love watching your video's My wife and I just bought our first RV. Yes we bought it at General RV in North Canton Ohio. We got a Prime Time Avenger 16FQ. Ohio is where we live. When we were picking it up this past Thursday ( 7-22-21 ) the panel that shows the Battery, Grey Water and Black water levels was not working right. The button for the awning, lights water pump worked perfectly. So you are right on what you said about having issues. Service said it would take 4-6 weeks for Forrest River to approve the part. This didn't stop us from buying or bringing it home. Patience is a virtue. Thank you again for all your HONEST video's on RVs.

As a former RV salesperson myself there is nothing in this video I disagree with. Great information my friend and thank you for sharing it on your platform.

Thanks for putting this out there. We bought a 2021 Bounder (from your team 😊) and had several items fixed before delivery but had other things break on our shakedown trip. Fortunately the hubby is handy so he has been able to fix things on the road. And you are so right about not missing out on Today...tomorrow is not guaranteed.

Excellent video! Nobody has better camping memories than my brother and me, along with our parents, the four of us went to every state, federal and private park between Canada to Mexico and what did we have? An 8 foot long Alaskan truck camper with no bathroom! Now in our 60's with parents gone little brother and I cherish each and every trip we took, from Mt. Ranier to Great Sand Dunes, Yosemite, Zion, Yellowstone, Canyon de Chelly and everything in-between. Get an RV and get going now, the clock is ticking!

I will say that you really will want a residential refrigerator. All windows in an RV have weep holes and don't expect to have a cheap heating or cooling experience. Living in one takes water, propane or gas and a macerator.
