You should do a video on pro-stock vs. retail gear: skates, sticks, jerseys, etc...

the difference between pro stock sticks and retail are for sticks pro players can choose custom curves they want different material in the blade and the shafts custom flex as well skates same thing they can choose different tongues different blades and holders

Oh I know. But given that it's accessible for people to buy pro stock online (prostockhockey.com, etc...), as well as things like jersey quality, I thought it might be interested for those that aren't in the know. Some may wonder whether it's worth it to invest in discounted pro stock. Just a more fleshed out breakdown of pro options vs. retail in a video.

For some items its perfectly fine to buy pro stock gear, and definitely can be a great value, mainly for things like gloves, helmets, pants..sticks and skates can be a bit iffy - one of the main reasons is what youd call "dressing" - which means you may find lets say a Bauer Vapor 1X stick, but its actually a Vapor X60 "dressed" with 1X graphics, and you actually end up with a stick thats nearly 5 years old but with the current flagship product graphics because of marketing and sales - most pro players youll notice in locker rooms dont always wear or use the most current gear, youll see players still wearing shoulder pads and elbow pads from 10 years ago that arent even made anymore, and other items that are "broken in" or "lucky" that they wont bear to stop using (Crosby still uses the same jock strap from when he was a teenager and has his equipment manager keep repairing it, theres a video out there somewhere on it) - theres lots of info on prostock stick codes to tell what actually is the model online in forums. Skates can be the same way, youll find plenty of listings for Bauer Nexus skates with a Vapor X-Rib mold pattern in them and so youre thinking youre getting a certain product but you end up with something that isnt the same as the retail version description..the nexus being a very wide fit normally but the specific prostock was built with a narrow vapor fit and dressed with nexus graphics on the outside of the skate and they end up not fitting you like they normally would in a store. Jerseys are an awesome example of the difference between 'retail/replica' and 'authentic/prostock' - ive got 2 different Reebok Edge practice jerseys - one bought from a store retail and one bought off ebay that was a game used training camp authentic and the difference is interesting how much more goes into prostock. I should probably do a video on it some time lol. But anyways, some products are safer than others, ive got some friends that will only buy prostock stuff and swear by it, but its up to you really I guess.

Hey Chris, I think you should also mention the fact that any major hockey store with a pro shop or a store that specializes in skates will also modify off the shelf skates. For example I have a wide food and I bought a pair of Bauer N9000. I needed them a little wider and the good people at Pro Hockey Life were able to widen them as well as “punch” them out in certain parts of the skate where I needed more room. This was done with a special press that stretches the skate after they come out of the oven. The guy at PHL also told me that they can easily do this with more expensive skates because the have a higher quality of material compared to a lower costing skate. So it’s kind of like getting a custom fit skate from something off the shelf.

Definitely interested in a video on your thoughts of a custom skate vs an off the shelf skate being baked and having problem areas punched out. I've always had some trouble finding skates that I *really* feel comfortable in because of bony bits of my feet which stick out a little bit. I find when I pull my skates nice and tight I get far better performance (as you'd expect) however the sides of my skates really press against the bony bits and it is extremely uncomfortable to skate in and when the skates are taken off can be painful as my foot readjusts to not be squeezed any more. This makes me sometimes not tie them up so tight so I get a bit of comfort, but my power is seriously impacted and my feet wobble in the skate a little bit, sometimes causing me to do a comedy slip up 🙄 I'd be interested in a video which might explain if a custom skate would benefit me or if other options might be available.

Hockey Tutorial, Hi, I’m Brandon’s mom. I have watched your videos occasionally over the years. Now I’m watching on my son’s iPad! He and his brother are members of a special needs ice hockey team in California. Although there are hockey stores around, they are not very close to us, but I will travel to one (ie. Monkey Sports in Irvine, California) if you think it may be worth the trip. Can you do a video regarding custom skates? There are ongoing problems with severe pronation for Brandon and his brother. Also, Brandon’s 2nd toe hurts after practice. I Bought several pairs of skates. I also used braces for his brother, but they don’t seem to fix the problem. Even with professional orthotics, the pronation continues. With this video, you have convinced me that cheaper skates are not the way to go. But Brandon’s first pair cost $600, which is not cheap to me. I just think that I’m going about it the wrong way. If you can do the video about getting custom skates, I think that it will help me decide on what to do and how to go about it. Seems like there’s no easy choices otherwise. Thank you.

Great vid, as always. I'd like to share my personal experience. I reached out to CCM Canada about trying to buy some equipment that I couldn't find at several major hockey stores and online. NO REPLY. So I emailed and wrote a letter as well. NO REPLY. Unreal. I reached out to Bauer Canada about options for changing a part on my hockey skate after regular business hours and they replied back to me that night with all the details. Incredibly high level of customer service. So I sold ALL of my CCM equipment and replaced with a full Bauer set. Anecdotal experience only, but Bauer has their act together and CCM seems to have so much invested in marketing and sponsorship that they completely neglected the customer service aspect. Never touching CCM again...

C.C.M. Canadian Cycle & Motors. Originally a Canadian company that made small gas engines and bicycles. Nothing to do with ice hockey. By the 1970s pretty much just bikes and hockey equipment. In Canada you wore CCM, Daust, Lang, and Baurer back in the day. Hockey sticks were Shurewood, or Victoriaville. And Jean Beliveau had more Stanley cups than Gretzky, Orr, Howe, Limeau, and Crosby combined. 17 in total. 10 as a player.

Yeah... What would you say to someone with zero experience, trying to learn how to skate, but who has feet that don't fit into any retail skates. My concern is that while a custom skate would fit my feet perfectly, the materials and price are too strong/too high to justify. For reference, my shoe size is a US 12 4E width. I have extremely wide feet that don't fit into any retail skates (width). I also have a high volume foot, but a low volume ankle. My ankle and lower leg have a lot of room in my current Nexus skates.

I'm a rollerblader and just got the Bauer vapour xr500s I love them, but as I'm a wide fit they're too shallow for me so I had to refund them. I can't find any UK website that does them in the double EE, and the supreme and nexus ones aren't as expensive as what the vapour xr500s are nor do I like the scheme. I'm a wide fit in Clark's shoes, but they don't have different colour schemes to make it known to the world I have wide feet and a high instep! Now every time I see the blue or yellow Bauer skates that's what I think. But I've ordered a size 7 now in hopes it will be a little wider, but the length might be too big. If ANYONE can link me a site that still has the inline rollerblades from Bauer in double ee width I'd be eternally grateful!!

Most online stores accept online returns or returns to stores if they have a brick and mortar store. Being in Columbus, we have only 1 hockey store other than the standard sporting stores. Shocking with an NHL team, honestly to me. I'm looking to get into playing hockey but the store prices are well over the budget that I have in mind. Looking at staying under $70 I've found the CCM Super Tacks and CCM Jetspeed. But after watching this video I think it eliminated the Jetspeed because I do have a wider ball of the foot area. Any thoughts if you still come to this video??

I dont care about hockey etc etc, i just like being on the ice, what boot fits like a shoe? Meaning is there a skate that wont kill my arches. They all seem super narrow and feels like my foots being jammed into a v. Also why cant they just make an insert that. Fits your foot? The ccm one sounds interesting. I like figure skates best to be honest, but is it impossible to get comfortable figure skates?

Went skating for the first time in years on Saturday night, and remembered why I haven't been for so long, HIRE SKATES! No I have never played hockey or skated that regularly but I've now decided to buy a pair of skates for both me and my wife. The HIRE SKATES absolutely killed both of our feet and legs. It really sucks because we were meant to go to enjoy ourselves but it's hard when the skates you HIRE hurt your feet from the moment you put them on

I know the feeling and just threw a pair away almost new. My feet are sore. Need new skates but don't really trust the kids selling them . Ive read about Nexus N2700 and am hoping they will work.

I'm no pro. I just like skating when I can but my ankles are fucked along with some other foot injuries. Would a custom skate help or be a waste of money? I usually just get a Bauer and tapenthe shit outta my ankles. Some input would be great. Thank you for such an informative video I'll be sure to subscribe and all the other shit too. Thanks again!

Very informative video, clearly explained - thank you. Do you work at a skate store in England? And if you do not, do you know any hockey/ice skate stores in the London/South East area that you would recommend visiting for good customer care? Thanks, again!

Thank you very much. Creating these videos is actually what we do for a living. No great stores in the London area, you need to travel up north. We recommend PuckStop in Sheffield. it’s a great distance from London but worth it for customer service and product range.
