The most important thing for a new rider is dont buy a fancy and very expensive bike, buy them when you got enough experiences.

And don’t go straight to the biggest bike, ease your way in. I think a 600 is a great start for those who have just obtained their full licence, that’s size I currently ride

I'm currently riding a ninja 250r and i started on a r6 crashed it on my first week. I kinda felt bikes weren't my thing but then 2 years later i thought i should give it another try and this time i decided to go lowest and then upgrade slowly so i get experience along the way. I'm really happy with my 250r but it does seem slow at times i also have a Z1000 but i only ride it occasionally and damn that bike scares the shit out of me. I'm thinking my next bike will be a Suzuki GSXR600 but i'm ride my 250r for a few more months just to be on safe side then upgarde once i'm ready for the extra power.

One or 2 fingers covering the front brake never hurt, its when you grab a handful of brake your going to come off, years of mtb and downhill riding taught me this

I've noticed so many mountian biking and road biking habits I've developed over the 15 years of riding I've done appearing in my motorcycle riding. Covering the breaks, counter steering, anticipating what cars are going to do and picking my ass up off the seat when hard bumps are unavoidable. Cheers!

i was taught in my cbt, by my instructor to trail brake, because it increases stability due to gyroscopic forces coming from the engine

In the us, msf teaches to stay in gear at lights so you can make a quick getaway if something happens behind you like a distracted driver coming up to rear end you.

The one about holding the clutch whilst stopped is interesting as the instructor I had for my cbt said always do this rather than knocking it into neutral (unless you have a long wait) so you're always ready to pull away.

Do every single one of them, rider for 7 years. One thing I wouldn't do when I was starting was filter, could not find the confidence. Took me about a year before I would filter nicely.

Took me a while too with filtering and lane splitting, one day i was in heavy traffic, just thought f**k it and went for it. As soon as i faced the fear i was fine

Plus if you down shift without rev matching at high revs you can lock up the rear wheel temporarily, I learnt this the hard way when learning

rev matching changed how i ride so much, tried to get a hang of it quite soon after getting my license, and clutch-less upshifts, mostly when accelerating hard but if done right, makes acceleration a lot smoother

clutchless upshifts are easy but it's still definitely more wear on stuff, I tend to just clutch it. clutches are cheap to fix, transmission bearings and gears errr not so much.

@@0xsergy Depends on the bike and whether or not you do the work yourself. I was able to get a practically new Ninja 250r tranny for like $75 including shipping. Whereas the cost of the clutch would have been at least double that. Having somebody install both of those for me would be where the real cost comes into it.

Another good thing about holding the clutch at lights. Helps you move away faster if you see someone coming in too hot behind you. Not only that, with the recent bike jackings it will help dip if they come up to you.. Plus if they do some reason pull you off, the bike will chuck itself and stall. Therefore making more time added in their getaway.

I grew up riding two strokes so even when i was 17 doing my CBT I found myself covering the clutch and getting told off 😂 I was so used to doing it as fineky old two stokes have a habit of heat seizing 😂 . Great video btw I'm going to show this to my friend who's about to do his DAS only ridden a scooter 8 years ago when he was 16 I'm going to get him to watch all of your new rider series as you explain stuff in a much easier way to understand than I do. My instructor is great I’m upgrading from my A2 to A and already have a GSXR 750 and he’s telling me all this stuff! time and place and gives me pointers about trail breaking as it’s a much faster bike great video

Thanks for reply and yes some trainees do just as you say, but most hand sizes can pull the front brake whilst the throttle is still open. Enjoy your videos as they are informative.

I rev match and 2 finger brake most of the time (I have Brembo front brakes so they give as much as you want). I wouldn't advise any one to do two fingers due to having 4 fingers on the front brake give you more and better braking force. it's just how I'm comfortable :)

Only time worth rev matching is if you're changing down to overtake, if you're slowing down what's the point, also if you go into a corner a little to quick changing down without rev matching may adjust the speed to something your more comfortable with.

i can't stand the sound of not rev matching. I've just got a bike and it pisses me off how i can't rev match. I heel toe downshift my van all day but can't blip a bike throttle correctly.

@@Be4tJumper if you've only just got a bike, unless you've been riding for a while there are far more important things to work on than rev matching. How well do you corner, what's your road positioning like, do you ride when it's raining, when it's windy, could go on....

Plus, downshifting without throttle blip can make the rear tire jerk a bit, I've felt it a few times before throttle blipping.

Yeah Spicy110, the old dont cover the front~brake!!! Can see why & would go with that advise as a learner, but yeah ive allways done it & probley still will forever! But if Learning it is an Important Factor in the Basics of Saftey! Common~Sense and Dont Panic! Take it Easy & try to Enjoy it! Early Lessons off Instructors are Extremely Important!!!! The Best Advise Your Going to get!!! The rest is then yours!!! You will become a better rider in time!! The Best Lessons you can get at an early stage! Dont Panic & Watch, Read, and do some reasearch! It'll Pay Off! Belive!! Happy~Riding!!! You'll Love It!!!!

I was never told to always out it into neutral at lights, just sat in first. Some people say that could burn the clutch out. I started doing the downwards blip, without thinking about it. Was just more natural. I do it in the car as well

That's a myth, the clutch doesn't burn out unless it's spinning at a different rate than the connection to the transmission and they're both in contact. At worst, holding the clutch in will cause the cable to slowly stretch over time and those are generally easy to replace and not that much money. As far as the blip goes, downshifting procedure is more or less opposite of the upshifting procedure, unless you're doing clutchless upshifts.

Not sure if it varies by school/ instructor but mine certainly was fine with leaving it in gear with rear brake on at junctions. Didn’t have to go through that whole drill. Great video though.

Rev matching although not always necessary is recommended when downshifting with any constant mesh gearbox.

Well... every person who went through advanced riding training and are riding this way will tell you to NOT rev-match as this is not a proper technique to change your gears, it is sort of a middle technique between beginners way and advanced rider's way. You should first adjust your speed by braking for the road/obstacle/anticipated way ahead, then change to the gear which is appropriate to the speed you are intending to travel with and this should be a natural gear engagement without upsetting the gearbox as revs should already be in the range appriopriate for the selected gear at that speed.

Because of you, Spicy, whenever I go past cows (and because I live in Devon countryside, there's thousands of the beefy bastards), I open my visor and shout "MOOCOWS" as I go past. I also have a few things I would personally add: 1 - Filtering, get used to doing slow speed stuff without putting your feet down and pulling away from slow speed stuff, riding slow along a line in a car park or something, ETC. Basically, wait until you can do it perfectly without cars before doing it with cars. 2 - Clutchless shifting, something I know too well. I though clutchless shifting was proof I was an amazing rider, ETC, ETC and I sacrificed time I should have been using for slow speed and braking practice for getting clutchless shifts. I clutchless shift every time I ride but I had to reteach myself braking and slow speed because I lost practically all of my skill in those places. And finally, 3 - changing/deleting mirrors. I (personally) think you need to get used to stock mirrors and doing correct observations before improving the looks of your bike. This obviously doesn't apply when the bike didn't come with mirrors or the stock ones are utterly unusable. In those cases, I'll allow it

Good video.. As an instructor I advise trainees not to ride with right hand covering the front brake lever as they tend to apply the front brake and not release the throttle, therefore in an emergency stop they will have no engine braking. When approaching a corner we should enter the corner in the correct road position and at the correct speed, how ever if you need to brake in the corner always use rear brake and never the front.

U use front break. So your bike go down in front spring. This way your turn wil be shorter. You only need a slow pres so really one or two fingers Al you need. If you use the rear break In a corner you can ease over do it and your bike go in a slip.

It depends where I'm going really. If I'm commuting to work I'll just come off the throttle and downshift when the bike has slowed down to save petrol but if I'm out at the weekend for a fun ride then I'll ride very different

On my cbt, when it came to my speeding, we was told not to. But as soon as we got on the road, we was going down a road with a speed limit of 30mph but about a minute going into the road I realised that I was doing was 40 and I was like "Well shyte but then I noticed not only was my instructor not telling me to slow down he was also keeping up with for him to overtake then say "Okay thank you for leading the pack follow me" about an hour later I got my cbt and he said "You were almost perfect just keep away from the parked cars" lol

Funny that... on my cbt the other day, I pretty much ignored the whole find neutral at a stop thing because it didn't make any sense to me. no one told me off. And i tried quite hard to rev match because i heal and toe in a car, so it just makes sense to me. in theory at least...

The guy that dose the CBT at pro Scot Scottish moto champion few years ago lost a few fingers covering the front brake a can't help covering the front brake as I moved freedom motocross to road bike so bad habits just seem to stick lol

I engine brake a lot and i dont rev match as I'm progressivly hard on the front brake But i do go through 4 to 5 chains a year.

Although I know how to rev match I dont do it most of the times since it uses more gas. Also I like the sound of the engine when I downshift normally. Of course if I have to downshift while in a turn I rev match, otherwise the rear tire will slide and bye bye traction.

Rev matching uses so little fuel its negligible your more likely to damage your transmission by not doing it.

Regular downshift doesn't ruin the transmission. That is a myth that I believed for a long time. I do regular downshifting and rev matching depending on my mood, but I love the sound of rev matching.

Regarding the shifting to neutral, it is a good idea when waiting for a long time at lights etc. (called vehicle sympathy) As trained at the IAM or ROSPA don't cover the back brake otherwise you have to do the strange right foot left foot dance to get the bike back into gear. Use the front brake!

With alertness you can do that dance just before the lights change or a gap opens. You are right tho but having been rear ended hard while holding the front I can tell you it really really hurts your hand haha

You sit on the back beak at lights and other places , so if your hit up the ass you slid forward if your in gear and/or on the front beak the bike will do a flip over and land on you and that's not a good day

When I'm slowing down I don't actually like engine braking too much. I use my breaks as it illuminates my break light, hopefully this will alert a driver behind me and reduce my risk of getting rear ended. It would be cool I if there was someway of illuminating the break light through engine breaking.

Pull in the brake lever just slightly. Will show a light, but not engage the front brake. What my instructor told me, what I do now

Having an sv650 I’ve got a lot of engine braking, I tend to check behind me before having to slow down to check if anyone is behind me, if there is someone there I will just use my brakes to slow down,if there isn’t anyone I’ll use engine braking. Can nearly get it to stop completely using engine braking even from 60 mph.

iv been riding for 15years and still on L plates there should be a rethink on this like if you have been riding for 5 years or more can loose the Lplates but only ride under 250cc

Clutch plates slowly get worn away when the clutch is disengaged. That's why I always put the bike in neutral whenever stopped. Rather than just sitting with the plates grinding away. Maybe I'm just too mechanically sympathetic

Clutch plates don't get worn away when clutch is disengaged, because the clutch is DISENGAGED.

@@stevepalmer5670 you're wrong. When the clutch is engaged, you're moving along. When the clutch is disengaged there is no power to the sprocket. If you've taken a clutch apart you should know how it works. Try that before saying wrong things

They probably will in foul weather or the dark ;-) You should carry a spare clear one, although you can argue that a visor is not a legal requirement and you can simply dump the tinted one when it gets dark, carrying the spare will make life a lot easier at the roadside 'chat'

@@trevorbest Yes, just don't keep it in a backpack unless you have some sort of firm armor between you and the visor. Visors can and do break spines if you ever land on them. Personally, I recommend either using a clear visor and carrying sunglasses or using a dark visor and carrying clear glasses/goggles.

I'm guessing with some bikes covering the front brake isn't much of an issue (Combi Braking System or Advanced Braking System) If I'm on the motorway with free moving traffic or a good stretch with little traffic then I'm off the brake but if I'm in heavy/city traffic then I'm pretty sure it'll be covered sometimes - I call it "road sense" But I did spend a hell of a lot of time ensuring the majority of my braking was either engine or back brake only

Holding the clutch in at stops can do some harm, especially to the throw out bearing.

My instructor told me that unlike car clutches motorbike clutches are designed to be ridden, so pulling it in at lights is perfectly fine

@@ryanm.191 oh yeh u can leave it in in first for a short stop, but if you get to the lights as they turn red, then i wouldnt. It will do damage over time, theres no question

I disagree with the clutch part. Always put it on neutral unless u actually ride 10 times a year n only go out with buddies on extreme hot days to hang out then yeh, leave it on first gear n see who goes first when the light turns green. When u put it on neutral n just come to a red light u expand the life-span of ur clutch wear, because once u r on 1st gear, the clutch needs to be released more than u holding on to it, n every second that passed u hang on to it ur burning ur springs, that’s y experience riders such as myself doesn’t think about neutral which isn’t a big deal, and shift from 1 to 5 within a split of second n doesn’t affect the clutch spring.

Rev matching only needed when on track, if you feel you need to rev match on public roads then you aren’t riding properly to start with. All the rest of the video I agree with.👍

Isn't needed no but defo smooths some bikes out, Try riding a single-cylinder 400cc bike and very soon you will be blipping on downshifts.
