I see lots of people who seem down heartened at only being able to have a A2 but the question is, Is it really that bad?

You're expected to ride at the same standard on an A2 test as the A (full) test the only difference is that you do the A2 on a less powerful bike.

Agreed A2 is more than enough power even for heavier bikes that are restricted. It just sucks that its yet another test to do to get to full A Licence. The most fun you can have on bikes is when you have lower bhp that way you can ride them properly and enjoy the roads without doing stupid speeds. Worst thing about most 1000+cc bikes is having to constantly keep your throttle down since 1mm twist is difference between 70 and 100 in almost any gear.

Rode a 500f for 11k miles and loads of days out, never got left behind at all on rides out and really was a great lesson in how to ride a 'slow' bike quickly. Im actually really grateful for the lessons it taught me.

I still love my 125 Varadero but a thousand miles in and I am already considering a big bore conversion. I am however too green to have anything bigger yet because I am still occasionally an inept danger to myself! Part of me (the diesel driver part mainly) does struggle with cruising at 9k revs😳😬😑. I love the 100mpg though as it makes going out for an entirely pointless evening drive guilt free! As a teenager on an SS50 the height of my ambition was a 250 superdream and I still reckoned it is enough for cruising.

I've held a full licence for 18 years, and I choose to ride a cb500f. Great bike, fast enough to keep out of trouble and pretty agile too. Love it!

I really loved throwing my KTM 390 Duke about, such a fun bike and that was coming from a hypernaked Ducati Streetfighter 1098 among other larger/faster bikes. It was perfectly capable of covering large distances and often did and handled better than a lot of more powerful bikes!

I tried a 390 duke and I can say these A2 bikes are great. When I passed my test it was still 33bhp for 2 years. I got a GSX 600 f and that was super fun as it makes all the power up top in the rev range or you could plod along. I never felt the need to have more power. The problem is as you feel more comfortable with power you want more and more and a lot of people don't have the skill to match a 1000cc. With 125's and smaller bikes you can ride them on the limit which in my opinion is more fun. I no longer ride after a crash but have good memories and I constantly battle with the idea of getting back on.

I also agree with your opinion on 125's being all you "need". However, after the first day on my DAS course I realised what I was missing out on after jumping back on my Cbr125r. 🤦‍♂️

I've been on a restricted license for almost 4 years now (partially because lessons here in Israel cost quite a bit and I'm in school), and have been riding an old GS500 for about 3 years and over 50K KM.

I've been riding around on an A2 licence for 4 years now and I'm not too pushed on upgrading because I've never felt I need more power.

Very much agree! I passed my Direct access a few months ago and went for a Benelli TRK 502, at the top end of A2 and it's perfectly fine for anything i'll ever need it for. And tbh, im not sure i'd feel confident jumping from a 125 to a 1000CC.
