Honourable mentions: 1) the people you ride with (or are not riding with) 2) not enough variety in your terrain 3) not getting strong at Switch 4) focussing too much on your gear 5) being too rigid Antidotes: Seek out new experiences rather than trying to perfect existing ones Skate switch, ride switch, brush your teeth switch, whatever it takes to force your brain into adapting Recognize that there have been boatloads of people who have become the rider you dream of being with far inferior gear (shout out to the old school riders and the sport’s pioneers!) Just as we control nature, you can’t control your talent, learning rate, etc. what you can do is take whatever the day brings along with how you happen to be performing that day and make the most out of it - strategically. Eg. if Frontboards aren’t working, try back 1s and if that still doesn’t work, recognize your brain just doesn’t want to rotate backside today. Try some frontside based skills or do something completely different. Go help someone else overcome a riding challenge and feed off the stoke you receive from helping someone. The possibilities are endless and there’s always a way to make every day out a good day.

i definitely had to dump some money on gear though. this is my first real season, and after about 6 days i realized that I was never going to get anywhere with the boots and bindings i had haha. the pain was unbearable, and it was far too distracting from the actual riding. i couldn't stand to be strapped in and riding for more than about 4-5 minutes at a time before I'd have to just sit down off the side of the run and unstrap and wait for the cramps in my feet to subside. miserable way to ride haha. I've put like 6 days in my new boots with custom arch support inserts and some foam bolsters to hold my heels a little tighter, and about 2 days in my new bindings that don't crush the tops of my feet through my boots every time i try to go toe-side. it's been fantastic. I can actually enjoy the ride and focus on all the other nice sensations of executing a good turn or sideslip. i can feel the little nuances in the board much better now too to control how much i want to slip versus carving the edge in. definitely worth spending some money to make your feet happy haha. everything else is a luxury, but i feel like it's a wise choice to go a little big on the budget for boots and bindings up front. that said, spending more money on boots or bindings won't necessarily mean that they are a better or more comfortable fit for a given person... whatever fits/feels the best is what you should ride, regardless of if it's 'cheap' or 'pro-grade' or whatever. no sense spending $500 on a pair of boots that don't fit lol

One thing that came to my mind right away, and directly relates to training in the off season, is to be in "good" physical condition. Strength is important for sure and right along with it is cardio. Being a bit older at 57 I can speak from personal experience when I am not in good physical condition at the start of the season it takes me a whole lot longer to be able to progress and really enjoy going out to ride. Thanks for the video and keep yourself safe! 😃👍❤🏂 Randy

Thank for the comment Randy! Good physical shape is so important. If I put the time into being healthy in the off-season it always pays off for snowboarding!

It makes a huge difference. I took up running 18 months and it significantly improved my snowboarding last season - having the extra fitness and leg strength unlocked new things for my boarding.

I’ve only been 3x total (1 last season and 2 this season) and I’m now riding blues. Biggest things for me were confidence, really using ankles to drive my heels and toes into the edges and just committing

A lot of this really ring true for me. Some people are naturally athletic and have great coordination that tend to pick new skills up quickly... i personally am not one of those people. Took so much repetition for me to get beyond the beginner stages.

Climbing/Bouldering is my off season exercise. What people don't realise is that core strength is actually very important. This way I am also able to put in balance exercises i.e. I'm pretty darn great at piston squats and that really helps with my deep carves and putting power down through the legs. And apart from watching teachers in KZfaq, is go and teach someone whose new to snowboarding. You will realise a lot about your technique by observing and giving others feedback.

Skateboarding is great for off-season training but I would say longboarding is even closer, just because you have the wider stance and turn in more similar ways

#3 I think there is a big difference between constructive criticism and putting someone down. If a rider wants to identify their mistakes and is willing to listen to feedback, it can be great for their riding. But just listening to mean comments as you say will do nothing. edit: wrote this then listened to #4 haha. I need to watch the whole video before making comments...
