Excellent information on rabbits! There's so much more to rIsing rabbits than most people think! When my daughter started raising rabbits for 4-H, we were exceptionally blessed to meet a family who had not only raised New Zealand rabbits but also showed rabbits nationally & were accredited ARBA judges. We got to be good friends & they were a huge help as we researched new breeding stock & made our way through the usual rabbit raising "oops"!! Finding an experienced person can make all the difference! Thank you Heather & God bless!!

Registered CA rabbits are the ones I would raise again.They put on an extra pound for the same amount of grain as unregistered stock. I like their size. New Zealands are to large for me to comfortably handle. We raise grass fed Hereford for breeding stock, however, rabbit meat is heart healthy. In the 10th Edition of The Encyclopedia of COUNTRY LIVING, on page 837, it lists foods to raise for rabbits. That is great to augment grain or if grain is unavailable. They would be my meat of choice in hard times. My neighbor uses rabbit manure to raise bait worms and it is amazing for the garden. Diseases can be challenging. I would have a bunny barn ~ Diane

I AGREE WHOLE HEARTEDLY ABOUT CHICKEN, I NEVER DID LIKE CHICKEN UNLESS IT WAS CHICKEN AND DUMPLINS... WE ATE RABBIT, AND DIDN'T STARVE TO DEATH LIKE PEOPLE SAY THE NATIVE AMERICANS DID FROM EATING ONLY RABBIT, BUT THEN WE ATE FISH, SQUIRREL AND DEER IN THE SAME WEEKS AND TIME . :) MY DADDY MILKED GOATS, AND THE GOATS MILK FED MY BABY WHEN SHE WAS ALERGIC TO FORMULA AND EVERYTHING ELSE UNDER THE SUN, AFTER AN ACCIDENT, AND I COULDN'T NURSE HER ANY LONGER.... Thanks for the video! I have always had pet rabbits, but I am seriously considering meat rabbits. One question about the hay: We have always given them unlimited hay because they need it to grind down their teeth. We had a rescue once and he was given no hay, only pellets. His front teeth grew through his cheeks, and his back molars were so overgrown he could not eat. So I guess just a word of caution when it comes to not feeding any hay at all.
@SageandStoneHomestead
@SageandStoneHomestead 10 ай бұрын
We have not given hay in years and the only time we saw teeth like that was when the rabbit had misaligned teeth. The pellets provide the needed work on the teeth, plus we do give them enrichment things like pinecones fresh greens and sticks.

Great series idea, looking forward to watching the rest! I agree with the warning, especially with rex. My first rex were quite small and the seller wasn't that truthful. I did get a good sized rex pair with good growth (I think the male was 4lbs at 8 weeks, but I'll have to check) from Alberta, so now it's a project to get that consistently. But we did also get silver fox this summer and if those do well for us, we might decide to do more with those instead. Except.... my husband gets too attached to certain ones and it always happens to be the poor producers! 🤦🏻‍♀️We had Californians a few years ago and they were really great. RHDV 2 is scary. There haven't been any reported cases here in Manitoba, but I see it's in Minnesota, so it'll probably hit here soon. Ontario has had a number of cases- though those all seem to be affecting pet rabbits and hay was the source.

I don't but I will. Our friends at GWP Homestead took a video of the process of dispatching and it's on their channel! We use the "Hopper Popper" Which is a cervical dislocation device, kinda like the broomstick method but less bending over.

@SweetBriarFarmMichigan Жыл бұрын
@@SageandStoneHomestead interesting I will check it out. I haven’t had rabbit since I was probably 6 years old my grandpa had beagles and would hunt them. My grandma would make from what I remember almost like a chicken pot pie stew with biscuits. I remember it tasting just like chicken. We thought about raising them when we first started homesteading since the meat to bone ratio is better with rabbit compared to chicken. A coworker from Mexico told me he used to raise them and he said they would basically do a karate chop with their hand to the back of the neck. He said they would scream before so it kind of deterred me since we had close neighbors at the time.
@SageandStoneHomestead
@SageandStoneHomestead Жыл бұрын
They sometimes scream with the hopper popper because they are scared and being restrained. The doe in the video that I dispatch screams because she had chronic ear mites and her ears were really sore. You have to hold the ears to steady the head.

hello! apologies if you've answered this, but if your breeders "age" out, will you start looking at what they produce to raise replacements? or will you go back to another ARBA breeder to get replacements, if only to expand the gene pool? (is that important if you're just raising them for your freezer?)
@SageandStoneHomestead
@SageandStoneHomestead Жыл бұрын
We will keep back the kits from the breeders we have and replace bucks as needed to keep the genetic diversity! Right now we have 2 bucks and 4 does and that allows for us to keep a pretty diverse herd, but eventually we will have to bring in fresh blood because we raise breeding stock. Great question! It matters less if you're just raising for the freezer, but you still would want to keep it diverse enough to not risk deformities. It would take quite a bit of inbreeding to get there though.

I wish I had known this info as well, I have 7 rabbits now and 1 is a harlequinn, Rex, and the other 5 are the babies of those 2. The babies came out so small 😮‍💨 and black which is fine but I'm sad about it. Father is Rex and beautiful and soft which is what I was breeding for, but I wanted moms color in them. Didn't get the color and I didn't get Dads fur quality... so sad. So now I have 5 rabbits too small for meat and no use for their pelts. Can't sell them, and I can't even give them away. No one wants them. So what do you do?
@SageandStoneHomestead
@SageandStoneHomestead Жыл бұрын
If you grow them out to 16 weeks usually there is enough meat to make it worth it. I find that a lot of times the smaller rabbits eat 3x as much feed for twice as long to get to the same weights. I would eat them and look for better stock if you can!! All is not lost.

I want to buy the Californians (I think) those are the ones with the red eyes? Just because they freak me out, you know? They look like a meat animal, like chicken broilers, meat animal 😂 Accidents of Mother Nature ? Who knows but they don’t look like my sweet bun bun boy🥰 they look like they need to escape from inside that body 😂 The more they freak me out the better for me at processing time😊 I follow Sprague River and I want to get my rabbits from her on a trip to go see my kids, if that doesn’t happen soon I’ll buy them locally, but I feel like I’ve learned so much thru her videos, that I almost have to. Thanks for sharing all these tips, they really helped me in my constant need of information when I’m getting into a new animal. What do you think about the hostil haré cages to keep breeders? I feel like I can do a nice hutch for breeders like a bachelor pad , one on top of the other and the girls side by side but I wonder if it is worth the money and time, or are those cages ok? Have you seen them? I’m going to be honest with you, I want to have rabbits but I also want a good setup for them, I really like streamlined processes and happy animals, I’ve started to follow channels on Yt where I want to go and free those rabbits, and let them go in the wild, their sanitary conditions are horrible, over crowded and in a really cold weather despite being inside with hundreds of chickens in a less than perfect in as converted into a coop. I’m not critiquing them at all, I’m sharing what I’m seeing, and this is not a commercial producer, it’s a homestead. And it makes me sad to see them in those conditions, so it always makes me keep researching, looking for things and adding to my rabbit notebook where I keep my ideas and plans on how to set them up… I look at your rabbit setup and I always see happy rabbits, living I. A clean space, and an effective meat production, so thank you! Because you inspire me, you make it seem doable for a family homesteading and encourage me to make it my own. Thank you friend, sorry for the rant, maybe I should have emailed you instead 😂 But is the truth and how it makes me feel some other people Have a great week! It’s still dark outside here in Oregon so I’m catching up with everyone’s videos while doing dishes, because my New Years resolution is no dishes left behind! In the sink, they need to be washed and put away for my mental sanity! And because we live in less than 300 sq ft 😂 Blessings Lety

Those cages look really good. You can make your own for cheaper for sure but those look like quality cages. You want bigger spaces for Californians because they are so big themselves. At least 30 inches by 36. That's our cage size and with a litter of bunnies it gets cramped sometimes until weaning. I'm making a housing video soon!!
