So how do i know what beans are going to be dark and oily when buying them other than opening the bag and looking?
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage Жыл бұрын
Hi SB925, Most beans will indicate the roast level on the bag/container. Medium and light roast beans never have surface oils so are fine for use i super-automatic machines. Many dark roast beans are okay as well but some are not. Just have to check the dark roast beans for excessive surface oils. Most retailers should be able to tell you if the beans are oily. Beans roasted extra dark almost always too much oil to use in super-auto machines.

RO water is good but only when you add a mineralization filter in the line after it is filtered, this way you get the best of both worlds, softer almost completely mineral free water then add the mineral filter you want, the right mineral filter is also important, this way you get the best taste with necessary minerals for your body as well as not clogging your machine. I’m fortunate enough to work for a car wash where I’m going through classes that has a lab for testing filters and water. a good car wash has a ppm of less than 25 in the water (Ro filter) ours is 3 ppm- this ensures no water spots as almost no minerals are in the water even if water spots are left on the car it dries clear with no minerals to harden, if you see spots on our wash it’s because soap was left on. Something we don’t let happen often, sometimes the blowers will blow out the soap that was left in the crevices of a vehicle at the end, but people still complain, what do you expect for a $20 car wash…a good car wash constantly tests and adjusts its settings as any little thing can change many things. On another note if you live in some cities you get water from the tap that is as good or better than bottled water, like Millbrae ca has excellent water which doesn’t require an RO filter at all, we also have a car wash that is in a city with over 985ppm! The worst I have seen. I myself notice drinking water over around 200ppm usually tastes bad. Average ppm in most water is 350. But it also matters what the particles are, it could just be high in one, two beneficial minerals, hopefully. Test your water!

Hi N, Thanks for the post. Yes, one must remineralize RO or distilled water if using in espresso machines. You need some minerals in the water but not to many. And, type of mineral matters. Calcium is good for extracting flavor but will cause scale if level is too high. Traditional sodium softening prevents scale but sodium is a poor extractor. Magnesium is the preferred mineral. A good extractor and unlikely to cause scale. Marc

Thanks for the video, I have juste acquired a 3200 series Philips in France and my lungo coffee is light dark like caramel. The taste is bitter I tried 2 different beans (Italian and Guatemala). My grinder setup is 3. Do you know if this could be a machine issue or strictly coffee choice ? Thanks.
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 3 жыл бұрын
Hi SA, You are welcome for the video. I've used most every super-auto machine available in the US but the 3200 is not one of them. I do have some ideas. Try a coarser grind setting for longer coffees. Bitter flavors generally indicate over-extraction. increasing grind size should help with that. Another thought is to try as Americano instead of lungo. Make a normal espresso and add hot water from the machine to taste. Marc

I have a filter system by reverse osmosis. it has 4 different filters/ 4 stages. is that sufficient enough for filtering water or do I still need to use the filter in the water reservoir?
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 6 жыл бұрын
Hi sam, Thanks for the question. That's definitely sufficient. I run a 3 stage system plus a DI chamber (stage 4) which produces zero TDS water. But... You do want to re-mineralize your RO water! A couple reasons why: First, water with no minerals makes bad tasting coffee. Second, water is a good solvent. RO purified water with no mineral content is an even better solvent! That's why you will never see pure distilled or RO water in metal containers or pipes. What you want is a mineral level that supports flavor yet isn't enough to cause scale and prevents corrosion of metal parts.

if i use distilled water, would this eliminate the need for descaling? also, i understand you don't want to use flavored or oily beans as they would clog the grinder, but do these restrictions apply to the preground single dose section? can i use flavored ground coffee in there?
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Indy, Thanks for the questions. Thanks for the questions. We do not recommend using distilled water in espresso machines. Over time, they can cause corrosion of metals in the machine. Also coffee over-extracts and produces bitter flavors as ultra-pure water is an aggressive solvent. Use of an in-tank water filter extends the time between descaling maintenance or in Jura machines eliminates the need to descale. The main problem with oily and flavored beans is grinder clogs. You should be able to use in the pre-ground chute but recommend more frequent cleaning of the brew unit.

Can I use a separate filter to filter my water, and then pour that filtered water into the Gaggia Anima? Is this bad for the machine at all? Will using this type of filtered water allow me to descale less often?
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 2 жыл бұрын
Hi b, Thanks for the question. You can use a different filter or no filter at all. Whatever water you use test its hardness and enter that info into the machine's settings. The machine will alert you to descale when needed based on your source water's hardness and number of drinks made. Not all external filters produce the same water quality and very few do anything to soften the water and/or reduce mineral hardness which causes scale. Marc

Hi, Im currently using Jura S8 but no matter which bean I pick I cant get a quality coffee crema. Its usually very little and dissipates quickly. Any suggestions on brands for beans?
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 5 жыл бұрын
Hi C, Thanks for the question. I'd go with an Italian style bean blend. Many have some Robusta content which easily produces crema. A couple of my favorites Are Lavazza Super Crema: www.wholelattelove.com/products/lavazza-super-crema-whole-bean-espresso-coffee and Maromas Orphea: www.wholelattelove.com/products/maromas-orphea-whole-bean-espresso I just featured those 2 coffees in this video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oLOHeKyEz52piJs.html In the video those coffees are made on semi-automatic machines so maybe a bit more crema than you'll get on the S8. A couple of tips for best espresso. Set the grinder to the finest setting, use the maximum coffee strength and highest temperature setting. Marc

I was given a used (barely) Jura Impressa A9 and the coffee is hot but the espresso is lukewarm. Any suggestions?
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Jory, Internally the machine brews espresso at proper temps. It does cool as it travels to your cup. Pre-heating your cup can help up the temp. An outside chance maybe the machine was not maintained so well and it has some internal scale deposits which are causing lower temps. If you do not know how the machine was maintained it might be worth descaling the machine and see if temps improve. Marc

I have been using on sale Starbucks coffee from Costco for several years without problem. But recently the Saeco just dumps freshly grinded coffee and says "out of bean". I fully cleaned the grinder and the problem goes away when I use not oily coffee. If I continue to use the Starbuck coffee, the "out of bean" problem will come back again. My question is why the first several years the machine was okay with Starbucks, but not now? Thanks.

OK its how my brain doesn't work, but NOWHERE, including your video can I find which direction the grinder knob should be turned to go finer or courser and my older machine simply says 1-10 - is 10 fine and 1 course, or visa versa.
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 4 жыл бұрын
Hi TAC, You did not mention the make model of your machine but a lower number typically indicates a finer grind setting. If not certain do a few brews at 10, a few at 1 then have a look at the used coffee pucks - it should be fairly obvious which was the finer setting. Marc

Tim Hortons uses A CRAZILY dark, oily bean. The taste is exactly the same across all the current machines. Some are button press\espresso squirt....some have a portafilter but are still button press, they just knock a puck out after the shot. The taste is, again, EXACTLY the same. I personally believe it's the best espresso there is. I find beans like there's, tho I got some from Canada from a cousin. Point was, they use oily beans for every shot. Is it possible to use an oily dark bean so long as maintenance is very thorough and regular???

Hey e, Thanks for the comment and questions. Funny story... Tim Hortons beans for much of the North Eastern US are roasted about a mile away from our studio in Rochester, NY. I often smell them roasting outside our door. Unfortunately I cannot recommend using beans with an oily surface sheen in super-automatic machines. They almost always clog up the chute which delivers coffee from grinder to brew unit. If using a semi-auto machine with portafilter then no problem! Use those oily beans! Marc

How can i adjust the pressure on a philips? Espresso extraction is too fast
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 3 жыл бұрын
Hi HE, Thanks for the question. You didn't specify machine model but I assume you are referring to a bean to cup automatic? If so, the typical extraction timing for semi-auto machines does not apply. Super-autos extract faster. Yyou do have control of grind size. For espresso I always start at the finest grind setting and back off from there if needed. Marc

Hi Eric, For espresso we recommend setting finer. I'd go to the finest setting regardless of roast level. Then, dial it back a little coarser if the machine chokes (dispenses no coffee) or if you find your espresso is too bitter.

@@ronnieyuen4309 Fully automatic need to be able to do everything. It is a compromise. I am not defending it. I use myself a very basic machine (a Gaggia Classic, pre 2015 model) and was hand grinding the beans for the last 3.5 years. Now, I bought an electric burr grinder because it took to long to grind coffee by hand for friends who come along.
