This is a list of the 5 things that most Potter's or ceramic artists have hear that either anger us or annoy us.
share this video with a friend, or better yet, a person that does one of these 5 things.
p.s I know I'm going to offend someone with this video so before you leave a level 5 passive agressive comment I want you to know 2 things.
1. I warned you in the video, you should have left. you are now forever a snowflake
2. you commented... which means your one of these 5 people....... gotcha

I'm not a potter, but I am an artist so I totes get Number 4. Why would a simple charcoal drawing be worth $75? Because I put the better part of a decade into learning how to make that and 14 hours actually doing it. That isn't even minimum wage! Get away from my art. I love getting handmade mugs. My beloved family doesn't quite understand why I delight in starting my day with delicious tea in a masterfully made piece of art. So they keep taking my beloved collection, putting them on the counter and putting pens in them. Then they bombard me with mass produced chain store mugs for gifts because "She likes mugs". Go put your pens in those and leave my arts alone!

Number 4 kills me. How little people value the craft, any craft, always baffles me. "I could get this at walmart for less." Then. Go. There. But I guarantee you you're not going to find This at That Place. Not the quality, not the craftsmanship, not the creativity. It's right up there with "Oh this is so cute, so simple, I could make this." Super doubtful, but sure. People pour hard work, blood, sweat, tears, and years of their life into their art and someone has the audacity to say, "Why is this so expensive?" when they know damn well why it's expensive. Their time is worth something, their hard work is worth something, their dedication to their art is worth something, Sandra, pay for it or get out.

I just tell them I'm a ceramic artist. Or ask "what do you mean?" and pretend like I have no idea what they are talking about. Also, "How long did it take to make this" because you should charge like X per hour. 10 years. It took 10 years to make that mug.
@CCCeramics
@CCCeramics 2 жыл бұрын
I still don't really know how best to answer the how long did it take you to make x questions. I don't work on one mug at a time. There is loss to factor in. I don't sit with it in the kiln, but there is a lot of work involved with kilns and other things that aren't just making the thing itself. They want a number as if we start a timer every time we touch that one pot.

ok, so since i just did a fair this past weekend ( and have been for the last 17 yrs ) here are a few i hear all the time from"Normies " ( love that by the way ,it's less salty than what i call them ), So here we go: I inform EVERYONE that comes to my booth ( along with SIGNS ALL AROUND) that everything is "food safe, microwave safe and dish washer safe " i get responses of : I can eat out of this ? drink from this? it doesn't blow up in the microwave ? then they will pick up a specific item ( like a bowl ) and ask :"what is this for or what can i use this for ?"REALLY ? it's a hat A hole i also make berry bowls, and i get the occasional " what is it? " or why does this Bowl have holes in it ,how can i use it for my cereal ?" Really ?! i guess you have to be a fast eater. then i get " so you teach this ? so i can take A ( as in one ) class and make this on my own and not have to buy it ? thats when i say in my head " damn i really should have brought my stun gun to the fair "

I’ve never sold things at a fair or in person, but I do on Etsy. Whenever someone finds that out, I get “oh, can you make me ...?” I know they mean well, but I specifically do not take commissions or pre-orders because I do pottery for myself, because I enjoy it. I have a full-time job. I sell pottery online to basically subsidize my clay and glaze purchases. I don’t want to ruin something I enjoy by adding in deadlines and agreeing to make things I’m not really interested in. It irritates me though when I explain this and some people seem put-out by it. Like, you literally just learned I make stuff! Why are you offended because I don’t want to make something to your specifications!?

I went to art shows for 25 years and always loved it when one "customer" in our booth would tell her friend how we made our pieces and kind of glance over at you for a nod of reassurance. Sometimes it was delightfully ridiculous. Or they ask you if "potter's" clay is super expensive and that is the reason your pieces are so much more costly than the ones at Walmart. I loved your video, you have a great rant style. Thanks

Thanks for the entertaining rant. I'm a ceramic artist too, and my favorites (with my usual responses in an upbeat tone) are: Did you make these yourself? (Yes, I did. With my own two feet) Are these safe for the oven [usually about bakeware] (they generally are--they get up to 2200 degrees--if your home oven reaches that, you may want to evacuate the house)? How do you make this (some time, skill, and practice mostly--if you want to take classes at the studio, contact me after the show. Rates are reasonable.)? I get the pot dealer line on occasion. I turn it around and say, "I am. I'm grateful for all the pothead customers who buy from me. But I don't let anyone get into mainlining the underglazes "

Then, if they don't walk away and actually give you a number, tell them how many hours it'll take you to crochet the thing they want. Then smile inside when you see their eyes bug out.

Having done pottery as a hobby for many, many years, I know how long it takes you professionals to finish a pot. When I go to a craft show to admire the ceramic work, if I hear #4, I will turn to Ms. Latte and tell her, "Yeah, at that price, he's earning a whole $0.03/hr from making that mug!. He should drop his price so that he's only making 1/5 of 1-cent per hour." But usually, when I'm at a booth with pots that really appeal to me, or if it's one of those techniques that take Mad Skillz, I'll start Loudly Praising the pots. [There's one potter, Jennifer McCurdy, who works in porcelain at cone-10, *and* alters them *and* carves out latticelike patterns in the walls. With. Porcelain. That's serious Mad Skillz there.]

Also, "Did you go to college?"...followed by utter astonishment when I tell them that I have an advanced degree. Also just LOVE when they tell me that they're too broke to buy anything, then whip out a package with a pot that they just bought from a competitor, and want me to congratulate them for the finding of their new "masterpiece". I've been a professional blacksmith for the past 20 years. Tons of craft shows under my belt. We used to keep a score of the dumb things the muggles would say until an hour before the show ended. Then if someone walked in the booth and uttered the winning phrase we would award them a door prize. But as to the price haggling, when someone tries to cut my prices to the point of being insulting, i.e.( walmart / china). I just shake my head and quit talking to them. It's just not worth the effort.

Dante, I love your love of ceramics. I don't know how we're not friends yet. I've been doing it for 16 years, albeit not as intensely as you. I love your videos. I want to co.e visit your studio soon. Also, I'm about to mess up your selsor oribe (I got my recipe from John Britt), I need to add a stabilizer as I'm putting it on a buff clay and it ran like snot off the pot. Maybe just a touch of Kentucky ball clay... thoughts?

I hate when people say, oh u know that pretty gold, can I paint an giant Christmas tree gold"? Then I say ya that gold costs $40 for 1/4 oz. So that Christmas tree will cost me about 400$ to make and it's super toxic and I have fire it 3 fucking times, so ya if u wanna pay like 700$ then sure, then they say well my grandma used to have one and she didn't pay that much and I say yeah she probably got it in the 1960s and the cost of gold OG was super low and they put asbestos on their kiln shelf so it would look better, but we know better now so we don't do stuff like that anymore

Thank you for a good laugh today!!! Every scenario is true....especially the price hagglers who left me longing to own a cow prod! Another anger inducing scenario is the other potter at the show who slides over for a 'chat' and starts 'casually' asking you about the exact details of your most popular forms/glaze/firing formulas......there is a place in Hell!!!!...... TFS!

Based on #4 if it’s $25 or $55 for a mug I’d still buy it! The artist took their time energy and heart into that piece and I would like to pay what they deserve for it
