Travel Packing Hacks & Tips:
Traveling can be fun, but it can be a pain if your luggage gets lost. Here are five things that you should never pack in your checked luggage. Always put these in your carryon.
1. Electronics - phones, laptops, cameras, lithium batteries.
2. Prescription Medicines - also keep in their original containers
3. Travel Documents - passports, tickets, hotel reservations
4. Car Keys & House Keys - you will need to get to your car and get into your house when you get home, so make sure you keep track of them.
5. Valuables - Jewelry, money, etc. Always keep that with you.

We travel with a Microsoft Surface everywhere we go. I edit my videos on it & use it to backup my pictures and vides while we travel. It’s light and the best travel laptop on the market in my opinion.

We use Sony Alpha series cameras to film our videos. They are compact so you don’t look like a super tourist when you take great pictures and videos while you travel.
amzn.to/2WbTNFH
We use Manfrotto Tripods. They are compact, travel well, and honestly I would not use another tripod for my nice cameras.
amzn.to/35AWqUs
Travel Plug that works in pretty much any country & has four USB ports. A must for any traveler.

Want to grab some great gear? We have used Osprey Packs for years & swear by them. Check them out here

This video saved me from a mistake. My wife and I were going to Ireland for our 10th anniversary. Flying American Airlines domestic and this switching to our international carrier. I had an expensive piece of jewelry that I was planning on putting in our bags until I saw this video. I put it in my carry-on instead. American lost all of our luggage somewhere around Chicago. Because they lost it on a domestic and we didn't have time to wait for it to catch up they said we would just have to do without it. We flew into Dublin and bought all new stuff for the trip but I had the jewelry with me so I could still give it to her on our actual anniversary. Thanks for saving my anniversary!

Also: always pack an extra outfit in your carry on along with a toothbrush/toothpaste, and a few snacks. And menstrual hygiene products if there is any chance you may need them. Travel can screw with cycles.

I'm a kidney transplant patient who travels often. NEVER put your Rx in checked luggage, and NEVER remove your meds from the original Rx bottle , complete with label. You are asking for trouble. I also carry a letter from my transplant nephrologist explaining why I have a sack full of pills. This is incredibly important advice, and I'm really glad these points were mentioned in this video.

Not all Countries provide prescriptions in labaled bottles. For example in Italy our Doc writes the prescription on a paper, and depending on the paper (some are usable more than once and you get to keep it, some are usable just once - for prescriptions covered by our Natonal Sanitary System SSN) you give it to the pharmacist, he removes a barcode sticker from the paper box containing the prescriptions and keeps the paper, to obtain money back by SSN. So our prescriptions are unpersonal. Go explain that to foreign customs.

i am going to Tanzania in a few weeks and have to figure out a way of carrying 12 days of meds with me. I take 13 different pills a day. I can;t afford the space in any of the bags I am taking to bring the labelled bottles. Because we will be taking puddle jumpers once we arrive in Africa, we are limited to one personal bag and one duffel that cannot be bigger than 23" x 12" x 12" and must weigh less than 33 lbs. If any of you have suggestions, I'd be happy to listen.

My rule of thumb for checked bags: anything in checked bags is disposable, any or all of which should be easily replaced at my destination. Also, best place for valuable jewelry is at home, not in your checked or carry on bags.

I'm an academic and used to do exotic vacations during my month-long winter break. My luggage was lost en route to Morocco--my research materials, books, notes. But what really was uncomfortable was the fact that I had none of my own underwear. You would think that sounds petty but many countries don't make the same stuff. Morocco basically relies on stretch fibers to form a crotch...which meant it was incredibly painful. Besides: Underwear is unexpectedly very cultural. So, now I take a few underwear in my backpack. What an uncomfortable month! But at least I edited the work of a friend who eventually would win the Pulitzer Prize...even if I was going commando!

People should also remember/be aware of the travel insurance: They often do not refund valuable or fragile things in checked in luggage, if stolen/broken. The reason is that you should have had it in the hand luggage. Another small tips: Bring one small chance of clothes in your hand luggage in case of missing luggage. It is not always so easy to buy clothes in the evening or at the airport.

Just a point on the first tip, electronics cannot be checked in not because they can be stolen, but because they contain batteries which may cause a fire due to a shortage. From the aircraft hold no one can turn the fire off but inside the cabin it is safely put off.

When you open your backpack during the TSA check and put almost everything (all the VALUABLE things that you didn't want to put in your checked luggage) in the plastic trays then double check that you get all of them back... Sounds obvious but everyone is in a rush there and in no time you can lose a important thing (especially when someone of the airport takes quickly all the trays to stack them).
@Lionababe1
@Lionababe1 6 жыл бұрын
I agree. Be careful to make sure you have everything and double check your seat. Under your seat and even behind you. I had a diary that was irreplacable detailing my experiences in New Zealand. I was on a working holiday. It had names of people I met, places I went, how I felt. 12 years later and I am still hurting. So much work went in to it and it was lost in a moment. Despite contacting the airlines it was never recovered. Be careful.

I know, I always make a mental checklist of all my valuables that I put on the tray and as I put the stuff back into my suitcase I check it off. Also don’t let the TSA person pressure you sometimes they have those tables once you’ve gone through security so get your tray and take it to one of those tables and put the stuff in your bag.

Great tips Mark! Two weeks ago I was visiting Seattle and I flew back from Seattle to LAX and had to check luggage for the first time because I was carrying liquids. Thankfully nothing was missing from my suitcase, but my suitcase did come back a bit broken. I'll try to stick to carry on as much as possible. It's less of a hassle than checked luggage.

Always keep your portable medical machinery with you. Many people with breathing problems have small portable nebulizer machines or CPAP machines for their sleep apnea, NEVER put them in checked luggage. Those machines are too valuable, let alone nearly impossible to replace internationally to chance in your checked luggage. Great video Mark (sp?).
@fuuhouhouji
@fuuhouhouji 6 жыл бұрын
Tammy Pearson If you have a CPAP arrive early to the airport. From time to time you would find that the TSA agents (or the corresponding agency in each country) doesnt know what those are and take A LONG time figuring out that you can take them with you to the plane.

As a traveling hunter I have experienced some really annoying things, like when I went to Britain to hunt. The international carrier said that the gun should be checked as luggage except for the rifle bolt, that should be a carry on item. This is makes perfect sense to me, since the "vital part", i.e. the rifle bolt, makes the weapon unusable without it. It is just a heavy stick. But then when landing in Heathrow to change flight the staff told me to pack the bolt, since that was a "weapon" to them, together with the rifle, thus making it complete and deadly. The idiocy displayed here is beyond words and the hassle to repack this stuff was totally unnecessary!

Some sound advice if some what obvious regarding checked in / hold luggage. Wolter mentioned items going missing from internal US flights. Well they are plenty of bad TSA KZfaq videos to put you off flying in the US. However one video I watched a traveller showed how he attached everything of value in his carry on case with cable ties. It was a bit OTT for my liking however you never want to be separated from your hand / carry on luggage and though I am not experienced enough with TSA. I have read about passengers getting separated from their carry on case at US airports by TSA and values have gone missing ! One TV news station set up a stinger case with an iPad inside which went missing and they tracked to a TSA supervisors house ! I trust no one when I travel where money or valuables are concerned! Sorry to be negative on this comment as I just want to enjoy my holiday not write a police or insurance report for something that I might never see again !

They weren't even items that had much value. Anyway, several of the items got stolen. Now if I don't have room in my carry on for souviners that I don't want stolen, I bury them at the bottom of my bag to make them hard to get to.

I do agree with your list, but it wouldn't hurt to put a copy of your hotel reservations in your luggage ( I keep one set in my carry-on and another in my backpack for easy access) just in case your luggage gets delayed or whatever. At least, whoever(airline staff) needs to forward your luggage will know where to send it to next. Another thing, when checking in, take a glance at the airline luggage tag that the agent attached to your luggage to make sure that it has the correct airport code of your destination.

Ryanair has gotten way more relaxed about carry-ons as they are trying to make turnaround time quicker, most of the time, if it is not too obviously oversized/over weight, you'll be ok- however, every now and then they may stop you to weigh your bag and check if it fits in the sizer stand.

I would like to add a couple related suggestions. The first is one thing you DO want to put in your checked baggage. That is a piece of paper or a card with your name on it along with the address of your destination (and dates you will be staying there) and also your home address. This helps the airline get your baggage to where you will be. A second suggestion is that I like to use a plastic cable tie on my checked baggage. That way you know if your baggage has been inspected. In the US, the TSA is supposed to place a card stating they have inspected your baggage but if they somehow "forget" you will know they inspected your bags if the cable tie is gone.

Never put you home address in you checked luggage going out of airport, in case it gets stolen then they know your house is empty. Put home address in case when you coming home.

I have had TSA try to take my epipen away, because "there are no bees on planes" I'm touch allergic to peanuts. The place I need an epipen most is the crowded confines of a plane. I had a note from my doctor on his Rx forms, saved my bacon. It helped a second time when a passenger on my flight reported me to the crew for having a mystery tube of liquid. I also tell the airline when I book my flight and the crew when I board, if I am traveling solo. If possible keep epipen sin your money belt after security.

TSA is entirely staffed with sub-par cabbages, unfit for market.

Hogwash, no one from TSA has tried to take your epipen. Ridiculous. TSA has NEVER taken a single thing from any passenger. The passenger can take any item back out of the checkpoint. If you don't want to do so, YOU give up your own item. Epipen have never been forbidden and I'm pretty sure you are exaggerating.

Traveling with medical equipment is a blast. Went to Germany for work about ten years ago now and I was 1 month post op getting my foot screwed back together. I had a boot on my foot and a bone stimulator. Oooh German Customs has FUN with that. Damn near ripped it apart.

Hi Wolter. Thank you for your video, very informative and helpful. Do you lock your checked baggage with TSR approved locker? Or its better just keep your checked baggage unlocked?

I had a portable game console stolen from my bag before. I put it in my carry on and the airline gate counter said I needed to check in it since they was no room left. They insisted that could not remove it from my bag since we were about to leave, so I decided to let them check in the bag. Once we landed, the bag was surprisingly waiting for me at the gate, but the bag was opened and the console, carrying case, and games were gone. The airline did eventually compensated me for my the lost items after I filled out a form.

Pretty much all prescription medications should travel in the original prescription containers now. This is especially important for medications like: anxiety, ADHD or pain medications.

HI Mark! As usual, very helpful information, but I have a question about lithium batteries. You said they were not allowed in checked baggage, but I swear that I have heard that they are not allowed in carry-on baggage either. Have you had any negative experiences carrying on lithium batteries? TY

Thank you for sharing such good word of advise. It's really good to have you, traveling on Poland. Have a nice travels :D, Wroclaw is really cool for example. It is located on the WEST of Poland. One of tourist attractions are the gnomes ... they are small, statues of gnomes spread on all the city, and represent the shops or places in which are located. I remember that they are over 200 of them. Good luck :D .
