If I were to add anything to this list, it's about cleaning supplies. I'm SUPER SUPER vigilant about my cleaning products and I do research before buying or using any products that claim that it's safe for pets. I try my best to be careful of what I use around my bun. We're a water and vinegar household 🙂

One more thing to put on the list: enough space. Have had rabbits for 14 years, and was reminded again tonight how much more space they each need than I initially allotted to them. If the litterbox is far enough away from bed and food , and tunnel spaces, everything works better and cleaner!

My first rabbit was fully bonded with my cat after I'd started free roaming him as a kid. The rabbit outlived the cat by a few years, living to be 13. Rabbits and cats can be bonded if done carefully. My current cat has been around rabbits since he was a kitten, and my one rabbit actually bullies the cat when the cat uses their water dish. I probably wouldn't trust a dwarf rabbit with a housecat, but larger rabbit breeds are large enough that most cats are more afraid of them than thinking they're food, but it's key to be present and carefully watch their interactions for at least a few months before trusting them.

I got really lucky with my bunnies. I was waiting to bond them and be patient. Well, my bunny decided he was impatient and escaped into the other pen, so I kept separating them but one morning while I was at work I saw on my bunny camera that he had gotten in and they were cuddling. I looked back at the footage from all the times he got into the other's pen and they never fought, and now 3 weeks later they still haven't fought.

Lorelei: I've had pet buns for 54 years, noe.w. Got my first as 11th b-day gift. Patents said I had to wait till I could fully manage; they were 100% correct. Bun before this one,Sugarplum, a dwarf, was an angel! I had to put him down @ age ten. Slept in my arms every night after five years. The one before him, my Petunia Bella, was all black- could see reflection in her gorgeous coat. She was 2.5 yrs. When I adopted from Alameda Animal Shelter. From first HOUR she was on bed w/ me! ( I am seriously disabled due to horse accident when 16.After 5 major operations, nothing left to do but be w/ my present bun, Snowball, or Snow, Snowy! All my buns have been special in own ways, but 4th( Carski), 10th( Petunia Bella, (AKA Black Beauty), 11th, Sugarplum, & hoping ( almost 4 yrs. In July)- Snow # 12- will be s "love bug" like 4,10, & 11! When I began, no bun specialists, just pet store rabbit books that are useless, etc. Sure you know "House Rabbit Society." HRS began 2 blocks from our home in Alameda. We rapidly ( rabbity?) became friends; got my vet, Carolynn Harvey, DVM from Marinell Harriman( founder, w/ husband) of HRS. Still going to Carolynn; would follow her anywhere! Have met people who bring buns from all over world to have her check them. Truly wonderful lady. Has taken care of 9 of 12 bunnies; & 5 Guinea Pigs! Yes, these buns have made me survive never-ending pain;.kept me from giving up. Now, one bun @ a time. Just can't handle more than Snow(AKA HMS- Her Majesty, Snow! 👑🐰🐇 🫐🥬🥕🍌- her remedy for everything!)Thank you again! Will always watch. 🌿( Fern) Evans.

Honestly, I think not leaving your rabbit alone for too long is way more important than people think. So many people buy small animals thinking they are just mindless animals that will be perfectly fine sitting in a small cage their whole life. I work at starbucks and a lot of the college kids find out that I own 3 rabbits, and it makes them want one. But they just don't realize that the lifestyle of a college kid (going out with friends, going to classes, going to clubs) just doesn't work with owning a rabbit. Or pets in general. We as humans tend to think that we are the only things on this planet with a soul and a heart. And that's just not true. Every living being has a soul and a heart, and they can get depressed just like us. So many people are blind to the fact that they are emotionally hurting their pets. They aren't objects.

Love these videos- they're why Ziggy Bundust is doing so well😊 You would cry at how beautiful his litterbox is - full of quality local grown Timothy hay with added oat hay and orchard grass. He's 6 pounds and gets his quarter cup of pellets daily, plus fresh organic greens, and a veggie treat and a digestive support biscuit daily. No predators in his space, and he's fully free roamed with no more than 6 hours alone per day. All of that is because of you and what I have learned from your channel! Thank you so much❤❤

An additional thing to avoid: Don't let the bunny be handled randomly by random persons - it is like the predator situation. My current bunny is really shy, except towards me. She was handled in a larger family in a random manner before they gave up on her. They did not have a clue about rabbits. Our previous rabbits have been more outgoing. :)

You are the reason I adopted a bunny and saved it’s life. So a few months ago my neighbours got two bunnies for their toddlers.they kept both of the bunnies in a very tiny cage together. And unfortunately one died due to mishandling and starvation and stuff, they didn’t know anything about how to treat a bunny. Then they were thinking of abandoning the bunny they had because it was too high maintenance. Then I convinced my mother about bringing that bunny home and adopting it. We named her Layla, and now she a very social and happy lil’ bun. I had been watching lorelei long before I had Layla that how I knew what to do with a bunny. Thank you for being so awesome and posting helpful videos. Love from India

Good quality hay is very expensive. Many hay has a lot of dust. One of my bunnies got pneumonia and almost died because of dusty hay. You have to be careful and buy good quality, low dust hay. It will cost you a pretty penny but it’s worth it for your bunnies good health. Also, from local farms is risky as you cannot trust it to be fertilizer free. You also never know if it is infested with deadly mold. I read a story a few years back about a woman who had rabbits and bought a bale of hay from a local farm. She said it seemed like great quality hay until one day her poor bunnies got sick and died. The vet did a necropsy and said they died of mold poisoning. He confirmed it was their hay. The woman said the mold was not detectable by sight or smell.

My bunny, a rescue, came home with me three years ago. I was so happy to have found your channel around the time she came home with me. I was (and still) volunteering at a rabbit shelter so I had lots of support locally. However, I also learned a lot from your channel and could watch it any time of the day or night. You gave me a great model for how to allow her lots of room to roam. We get along great and I can’’t imagine life without her. She has her own little personality and I love how she expresses it. I appreciate your honesty, showing not just the good things but the challenges, too. If people have a realistic idea of what life with a house rabbit is like we will, I hope, have fewer rabbits abandoned or surrendered to shelters. Thank you so much for the work you do. ❤

You can introduce bunnies to dogs and cats if you know your animals and are extremely aware and cautious. We brought our first bunny home as a baby and introduced him (very limitedly) to our energetic 8 year old dogs that day. By the next day, he was snuggling with our Great Dane/Brown Pointer. That said, we have very good control of our dogs and they are very well behaved. So they knew that this bunny was a member of the family. I have a friend who already owned a dog when she got her bunny, as well. It depends on the situation, but I don't think it's really that rare.

*You forgot a VERY IMPORTANT one Lorelei, PUPPY PADS!! One night 3 weeks ago, my bunny Missy chewed up a puppy pad & accidentally ingested some of it.. Long story short, she stopped eating, drinking & even going to the potty box. *SHE DIED about 24 hours later while I was on the phone calling around Frantically trying to find a bunny vet who HAD an opening to see her.. She just keeled over onto her side & just stopped breathing! 😢 **I implore everyone with a bunny to BEWARE of those puppy pads lining your litterbox; do NOT use them unless you must, & if you notice ANY chewing of those pads, remove them immediately & DON'T WAIT to get your Bun to the vet if you even THINK your bunny may have swallowed some- because my bunny's cecum burst- and all I have left are her ashes in an urn! 😢 (I was asleep while she was chewing the pad up, and she had NEVER chewed them up before!) So PLEASE BE VIGILANT if you happen to line your litterbox with these pads! My Missy was only 4-5 years old (adopted from Humane Society), and had NEVER chewed them up before, so beware, and avoid using them if you can. The benefit of a cleaner pottybox is NOT worth losing your bunny to G.I. Stasis and a burst cecum! I'll never forgive myself for this mistake/oversight! PLEASE DON'T MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE I DID! (❤ This comment is in Memory of my Missy ❤)

This is so true! I was skeptical of giving my bunny a friend but my sister had this cat that didn’t really have hunting instincts just lovable and wanted to be friends with every animal and this cats sister ran away and got lost and he was very depressed. As soon as I introduced my bunny and my sisters cat they had instantly bonded! They both have anxiety but the cat had severe anxiety and wouldn’t eat or drink until he had a friend. They sleep together snuggle together and groom each other. This is a special situation and worked out perfectly but if you don’t have experience with animal behavior and especially rabbit behavior DO NOT get your bunny a friend!

just wanted to add that it is also important to avoid using cardboard for toys, play boxes or whatever.. even though you see this widely advertised as a cheap way of making rabbit toys/houses/boredom breakers etc. My girl bun chewed some cardboard (not even a large amount) - this swelled in her tum and caused a blockage. She has to be out down. Never again will i let them near cardboard.

Hi, Lorelei, when me and my mom got my buns 5 years ago we didn't know much about rabbits, we got two males and the breeder said that we could bond them so we got them not knowing what would happen. It was fine for a few days they were so scared and would cuddle they had no idea where they were. My mom needed to get there pens cleaned and she put them in the pantry toegther then she heard some noise and went in and saw blood everwhere cole attacked teddy the most and bit his you know where and it was so bad and there were fur everywhere. She took them to the vet and then got them fixed, Sometime after that, i rember their cones they looked different, but they were separated for four years then, we found someone to bond them and now they are happily bonded and have a big enclosure and so spoiled and i know so much thank's to you and the shelter i volunteer at and google, thank you.

About the dog thing another thing to add- if you have a hunting dog breed just don’t get a rabbit or any small animals- I have an American Eskimo not a hunting breed luckily and my rabbits willingly love my dog even my usually very scared rabbit loves him (my dog is 13 now and we have had the rabbits for 3 years now so him being elderly was also a factor) personally the risk is to great to just leave them alone together of course just like how I wouldn’t leave a cat together with my rabbits I wouldn’t leave a dog either it’s just irresponsible, no matter how much you trust your pets animals are unpredictable and need supervision!

I got a rabbit almost 1 month ago (3 weeks) and I'm still with my mom, I'll move in a month and a half, but we have 3 cats and your first advice is kind of scaring me, I hope Oreo (my rabbit) will be well. He's still young, it's his 3 month. I wanna take care of him as much as I can and I fear I'll not be able to do things correctly

I raised rabbits "Bunny" for years but when I got a bigger place I allowed my bunny roam around because she can't be in a cage to long but I didn't know that bunnies can get anxiety for being alone, yeah grass is hay so it's so cheap that anyone can get it. This video actually helps out with a bunny.

As someone who has had 6 bunnies over my lifetime all rescues I can say my dogs have never had an issue with them as long as your dog is trained to not chase small animals it’s not a problem i even trained my neighbours Australian shepherd not to chase my bunny’s and he hangs out with a bunny that’s 2.5 pounds and he’s over 60. My 2.5 pound bunny also was sleeping with my oldest dog for as long as he has been free roaming which was just after he was big enough because of his size. If a dog is properly trained and socialized with small animals it’s not a problem you train them to ignore the bunny. My bunny climbs all over my dogs and has even tried grooming them and nipped to hard on my old dogs tail and my dog was like ow and just moved away from the bunny. My cat and one of my bunny’s the smallest again also sleep in the walk in closet together as the gate keeps the dogs from getting to the cat litter. So no it’s not always a complete no when it comes to other animals with bunny’s. My smallest bunny also only likes dogs and the cat not other bunny’s we tried to get him to bond with my 2 others he prefers the dogs.

Here are some other questions that I would like to know as a bunny owner: Now that I am a college graduate going into a lab technician job for 12 hours a day, 4x a week, what are some things I can do or add to my rabbit's enclosure to keep him occupied while I'm gone (the boyfriend works nights so he will still be home when I am gone but the bun is bonded to me). Another question is about litter box setups. Are haynets ok for a rabbit's neck and back? Next question, are white noise machines helpful for rabbits who live in apartment buildings with noisy neighbors/dogs or does the constant static noise stress them out more? Thank you!

I have the most placid Labrador. He is my trained Guide Dog and when we brought the house bunny, Dusty home - I think Obi my dog, was more scared of Dusty. They’ve been living together for 3 years now and Dusty is always first to approach Obi. Obi couldn’t care less about Dusty’s presence. They are very careful around each other. I am grateful I do have such a gentle, now old dog. My ex partner’s golden retriever was the opposite. He would see any small animal as a squeaky toy. I’m grateful my boys get on.

When I was working on my tv show for Amazon, door to door would be possibly 13 hours (sometimes longer) when I couldn't bring my two rabbits to work (it was both or none, one is just a brat and too squirmy). It was honestly awful for all of us. I was glad my two had each other. Do not recommend long days away. Even now I leave music on from the coffee jazz channels so they're at least not in total silence.

My bunnies and cats have been around each other a lot (normally through the pen bars though). They're used to each other and don't even notice each other a lot of the time. The bunnies are used to the sounds the cats make and the bunnies don't really make enough sound for the cats to care. I definitely would never have a dog around bunnies but I think cats and bunnies can really have exceptions unless the cat or rabbit are actually vicious towards each other.

All my bunnies were best friends with my housemates little terrier mix dog, I mean best mates one time Trooper and Minnie were sitting together eating rabbit pellets, they would always acknowledge each other with a nose bob when they went past each other etc, the vet said Trooper hadn’t read the terrier handbook haha, it was sad in the end though, as originally my bunnies were free roaming in our closed backyard with trooper during the day and would get locked in pens At night for their safety. I would have loved them to live inside but at the time my housemates and partner weren’t really onboard especially also the fact that it was a rental home. Anyways our area flooded really bad late last year, (I live in Victoria Australia) my home specifically didn’t flood but it did cause and influx of mosquitoes causing for my 4 of 6 bunnies to be lost to Myxomatosis, Tallula & Benji my youngest bunnies miraculously didn’t get it and now live luxuriously inside but poor trooper who lives outside full time (his owners decision) kept going over to where the bunnies used to play and he would look for them everyday, slowly strolling around their area and sniffing like they were bound to pop up any day, we lost them in December and Trooper did this for quite some time, only stopped last month when we got rid of all their play equipment, burnt it all. Trooper even acted a bit like a bunny after living with them for awhile and they didn’t mind him at all, they all got along so well.

i got 2 rabbits a few weeks ago, and even though we did research for a long long time before we even planned on getting them, i still learn new things from videos like these 😊 i watch my friends small dog when she goes on vacation, and even though he didn’t try to hurt my bird (and instead got scared), i’m nervous that he will get too excited around the bunnies and scare them, so would putting the bunnies in another room rather than their usual pen be better when i’m dog sitting?

What kinda dog is it because most dogs can be trained to leave bunnies alone especially small dogs. But terrier breeds and others that are used for hunting mice or other animals are harder to teach them but can be done my dog that just passed away was a blue heeler tarrier poodle mix (complete mix of breeds) and he was trained so well with the bunnies he would sleep with one that’s 2.5 pounds. I also trained my neighbour Australian shepherd which breed is a known dog that likes to chase and herd to leave them alone. BUT if you don’t have proper experience with training a dog don’t attempt it and just move the bunny’s to a safe area that they can’t be hurt in.

I have a question about the hay. I got my rabbits Timothy hay and they barely eat hay. I've tried other brands as well and they just barely eat it. Are there tips or tricks? We go out and pick them a ton of grass and dandelion leaves which they love and eat so much of. And we wash it before we give it to them. But they just don't seem to want hay.

i honestly thank you for this. I just got my first bunny named Professor Chaos(named after a south Park character) and I am hoping to give her a home to thrive in. My parents are divorced, so I was wondering if setting up a home in two different locations would be ok? I'm not sure how stationary they are but I do not want to put my bunny in a depressive state for 48 hours, and I don't trust my parents to take care of her when I'm not home. especially with a cane corso in the house.

That was one thing my boyfriend and I were worried about when we got our bunnies was how our cats would react to them. But thankfully they didn't care and they never bother them. Our one cat Athena is the only one that actually plays with our one bunny. But it's under strict supervision from us and when we aren't here our bunnies go in their bunny mansion

Lorelei you would be shocked if you saw the hay here in Australia for bunnies. Its such a racket! Apparently the good hay gets exported and Aussie bunnies end up with the dregs at inflated prices. It's so frustrating because sometimes they sell you straw and call it hay. It's really bad and really hard to get good hay for them. It's really difficult to get a farmer or someone to ship you a bale of hay. The postage here is crazy too. Sadly sometimes the pet supply places simply don't care. Recently I ordered 8kg of oaten hay and it turned up crawling with weavels so I went to the local store in desperation to find our bunny some hay if some sort to get him through till I could get some more shipped. The attitude was disgusting - they think straw is suitable for them to eat and when I explained he needed greener hay she handed me this very sad bag of I don't know what kind of dried grass. Her attitude was if he's hungry he will eat it. Totally careless and ignorant to the fact it could make him sick or that if a rabbit does not eat it, it means it's no good. It's a nightmare to get decent hay and when you find some you try to stock up a bit so you don't run out. Sadly the pet stores sort of demonstrate that hay is just a bedding option and you just feed bunnies pellets. I am so grateful for channels like yours and others around the world because it's educating bunny owners everywhere and us Aussies see all that lovely green hay you all can get for your bunnies overseas which I hope will create market demand here and change the current hay situation here.

I've owned rabbits for about 25 years & often had a similar problem here in Arizona, most of which is desert, so there's no actual grass to harvest at all. *I'm sure postage to Australia is horrendous, but I TRULY SUGGEST that you try Rabbit Hole Hay (my first choice) or one of the Oxbow hays, or even try Small Pet Select. All three seem to have the BEST hays in the whole World! ;) Tip: It'd help if you buy a larger quantity of grass, so you'd have to pay for shipping it LESS often.. *Am sure that's the best advice possible, especially in a situation like yours- *UNLESS there's a way that you could grow the grass yourself, cut it by hand & let it dry outside in the sun until it's "hay"! ;) (That's what I used to do when I lived in Iowa, where there's Lots of rain. The grass grew beautifully in the backyard of a house I'd rented there- just make sure that there are NO weed killers or pesticides used where the wind could blow them onto your bunnies grass growing area.) Good Luck to you!
