I can tell you that at Home Depot they use an outside assembly team to uncrate the mowers. All they do is uncrate, add oil, add fuel, air up tires, then install the seat. No fine tuning deck, or any other adjustments. They get paid buy each piece they assemble. They are the same people they used to assemble wheelbarrows and grills. It is all about speed and not quality. I did this for 6 months. Never one time did I check anything else on a mower. Neither did anyone I worked with the whole time I was there.

I just took delivery of an X350 yesterday and mowed with it today. When the salesman unloaded it from the trailer there were 2 bolts and hex nuts laying on the deck of the trailer. Traced them to the bagger. The other 2 were also loose. This morning checked it over before mowing. Front tires low on air and then checked deck level…it was not. Blamed it on technician not taking into consideration added weight on RH side of deck from bagger attachment. Has an LT160 I was happy with but this does mow even better.

I just purchased a JD S130 from Lowe’s, they have the local JD dealer come in and set the whole thing up (free of charge,) so the unit is literally ready to mow off the truck! They delivered right to my driveway! The local dealer checked everything mentioned in this video (I confirmed many of the steps myself to be sure such as tire pressure & oil level) & was a big reason I went with Lowe’s, I would have gone straight to the dealership itself but all their 100 series are on a 1 month back order. Lowe’s delivered mine 2 days after I purchased it. So far everything about my experience has been awesome & my first mowing went off without a hitch! Thanks for your videos!

Thank you for the tips. I received my brand new Toro Timecutter 42” zero turn last Friday. The deck was not leveled, two handles were not installed properly, one front cast tire has almost zero psi and the other has 15 psi. Manual states 30 psi. One rear tire has 30 psi and the other 10 psi as to manual’s 13 psi. There was no hour meter but the mower is definitely brand new with no sign of use. Your video made me to check those things and I was surprised how a bad job the local white-glove-service company performed.

Check battery voltage. Should be 12.7 or higher. IF 12.4 or lower the battery may be damaged. Get the seller to guarantee that the battery will charge properly to a resting level (sitting unused for 2-3 days) of at least 12.7 volts. IF you have zerk grease fittings on your mower deck spindles ASSURE that they get greased before you mow.

The problem that I find with the newer mowers that you can buy today is they are built very, very poorly. At most they might last a couple of years if garage kept and got their maintenance when needed. They are made of a very cheap type of metal compared to what they used to make then out of. I use a 1969 Sears Suburban 12 and it has lasted me forever and will most likely outlive me. They were built good and strong and were very simple to fix things on and were pulling beasts. The decks came on and off very easily and were made very, very well. I wish they still made them as good as they used to. Very good video also.

I don’t know what brand of mowers you have had in the past but I am genuinely convinced you can’t kill anything with a Briggs and Stratton engine. And I know a lot of people who rant and rave about Honda’s. Although I don’t even like their cars so I wouldn’t have one.

People want to buy a mower as inexpensively as possible, so the manufacturers complied and built “economy “ machines to meet a price point. Folks generally don’t do much maintenance, abuse them and then get a new one about every 4-5 years. Deere, Cub Cadet, Simplicity and Husqvarna all build a top shelf model for those who are shopping quality, but expect to pay a premium on them. People look at horsepower, deck width and the price tag, not necessarily in that order.

I just learned a few days ago that the only JD dealer within 40 miles of me had it's dealership pulled out from under it due to a purported lack of sales. They had been selling JD's for 42 years. They are still open selling Cub Cadets, Skags, and large commercial mowers (didn't notice the name). That former dealer is understandably bitter. I haven't decided whether to buy at a local big box or try to go with a distant dealer.

just wanted to add a comment, 2 years ago i purchased another brand, Cub Cadet XT2 took delivery from the dealer later in the summer at the end of the season i only had 5 hours on it. come spring i go to remove it from our shed and both front tires were totally flat, i never had an issue with our previous mower in the shed BTW, i tried to put air in nothing, i went to the dealer and they said pretty much not much they could do i was like it is a 2000 dollar mower and it only has 5 hours on it, they said their hands were tied and couldn't due to the warrantee is only like 6 months on tires. i called Cub Cadet directly explained the whole situation stating it only had 5 hours on the engine, they sent me 2 new tires and rims at no charge, i believe the beads or something were defective because 2 western NY winters and no issues with the new tires.

Interested in one but concern if any of JD is going to fit in my 48" gate (opening space is 46"). My existing movers is Bolens 38" deck and it fits just right if I lift that black flappy thingy on the side. Will the 42" deck work? Tried to read the actual measure online for all riding mowers but impossible, not sure how they measure it. I need help. Thanks.

Good question, the width of a 12" mower with the chute raised (black flappy thing) is 46.5" so it would be close to get it in and out of your gate. I wish John Deere still made a 38" option but unfortunately they don't. Thanks for watching!

This is why I would never buy a mower from a big box store. It was likely uncrated and assembled by some recently-hired person who may not get it done right - or to completion. I think the chances of this happening are lower when buying from a dealer. Another thing I hate about the box stores is they park their mowers outside, usually in front of the store, and exposed to weather and tampering. Not only does the mower take rain, but every unattended raggamuffin coming to the store with parents is going to jump on it and tamper. Some may say it's not going to hurt a mower to take a few weeks of weather outside, but I don't store my mowers outside in the weather, so I'm not going to buy a brand new one subjected to that.

I watched several of your videos of the past few weeks. Overall, some really good content. This video takes some pretty subtle clear shots at the non-dealership level sales. I attempted to contact several dealers near me before ultimately going to a big box store - and here is why. Each dealer I walked into, they had 0 interest in even talking lil ole me "only" spending 3-4k on a residential mower. Practically laughed at. You're not buying a 700k combine? GTFO. Like your videos, but I think you should have a little reality check on the elitism of the "JD dealers." If you're not spending 25-50k+, don't waste your time at a dealer, they don't care.
@WesternEquipment
@WesternEquipment 3 жыл бұрын
@atcdude067 thanks for leaving your comment. We want this channel an open forum to talk about what people are experiencing. $3-4K is a ton of money to me and I want to be valued as well when I make a big purchase like a mower. A mower is sometimes the 3rd biggest purchase in a person’s life, I take that serious and it kind of drives me to create useful content so people can make a more informed decision when buying a mower. Nothing more frustrating than not getting in the right mower model or not knowing all about the machine OR not having somebody appreciate your business.

Are you 'buying the unit that you want' or wanting them to 'sell' you something? I already knew that I wanted one of the X500 series from doing my own research. I called the local dealer and asked them what was available. I bought the X570 over the phone and was told it would be ready later in the week. I have a truck and a small trailer so I did not need to have it delivered. I picked up a maintenance kit at the same time as the X570 and worked only with the salesman who sold it to me over the phone. Everything went very smoothly about 4 weeks ago.

I think a lot of it depends on where you live. I live in Greenville SC, and we dont have a lot of farming or agriculture around here, but we have a LOT of residential. No one is buying combines... lol. I just bought an S120 this week (pick it up today) and I was treated VERY well. They were responsive to my email questions, and very friendly in the showroom. I highly recommend getting John Deere products from a dealer rather than one of the big box stores. There is a peace of mind that come with purchasing from people who are focussed on one particular product or brand. At the big box stores you are lucky if you can even get anyone's attention, and even luckier if you get the attention of someone that knows what they are talking about. Since the prices are exactly the same at the John Deere dealership... why would anyone not go there? But... its America, people are free to do what they want. (for now... lol)

I experienced a bit of what @atcdude067 did. Went to my first dealership 2 weeks ago with my twin 3 year old boys so they could take a look at all of the “cool tractors” and I could ask some questions. No one bothered to even approach me. As a result, I bought my kids 2 toy tractors and left. After some additional research, I came to my own conclusion that the dealership was still the right place to make my purchase. Especially, since I was aiming for the x350. I watched all of Western Equipment’s videos and a handful of others; and educated myself. A week later, I knew exactly what I wanted along with the attachments that I needed. I called a second dealer near my house, luckily, I got a friendly salesman over the phone and essentially made my purchase right there with him. He didn’t up-sell me on a warranty, additional services, or any other attachments. He gave me exactly what I asked for, gave me the price (which I knew ahead of time), and I bought it. In the end, @atcdude067 may be right. However, us little guys just need to do our own homework, call up the JD dealership and make the purchase. Very little can go wrong with that recipe.

Having worked at JD, I would never buy anything made by Deere. Although they preach quality, they rush the lines. If you are not done in the time allotted, supervisors descend on you demanding to know why you are not done on time. If a part does not fit right, send it anyway. Then they wonder why there are so many aftermarket repairs.

How to avoid most of these things that aren't set properly? "Buy from a DEALER". You can buy a John Deer from a big box store but if there is a problem and John Deer sends you to a dealer for a warranty issue, keep in mind your mower is going to sit there until they have free time to work on it. The Dealer will always take care of people that bought from that dealer first before any warranty issues from a box store...... On another note: absolutely NO Box store is going to check for you what this kind young man suggests in the Video, they will always refer you to the nearest Dealer. Moral of the story, buy from a dealer even though the mower at the Box store is the exact same as the dealer is selling, your issues will be far less and if there is a problem the Dealer where you purchased the mower from will take care of you with in 24 to 48 hours instead of 3 to 5 weeks if bought from a box store. Be a smart consumer be smart with your time and money.

It is not practical for consumers to do some of these checks. It comes down to trust and not disrespecting the dealer. This opinion may be different if you buy from a box store.

Don't buy this John Deere x147r Ride on mower. Unless you want to mow a level short lawn that doesn't get too long. Maybe a bowling green would be suitable. The grass shute constantly clogs up if you mow heavy green grass so you have put your arm in and pull it all out. You have no warning when it clogs and jams the blades while the motor keeps spinning the deck belt resulting in black smoke coming out that lets you know there's serious problem. If you're lucky the belt will jump off the pulleys. Putting the catcher back on is a frustrating procedure the makes you think it from a different model. The lock catch on the catcher releases very often dropping grass out the back. The whole catcher set up is flimsy and cheap. Not too mention frustrating. Not good around trees as the catcher handle sticks up way too high and hooks onto branches. 1 hr of use after buying this brand new mower it developed an unnerving clunking sound in the deck. I've always owned John Deere and have been a happy customer,but this model is poorly engineered and designed.
