You are, without a doubt, one of the most inspiring and profoundly wise designers I have ever come to know. You speak to in terms that are easy to understand and extremely insightful. You have the heart of a teacher that is far beyond your years. Anyone who listens to you can feel the passion you have for your work. I applaud your energy, your practical perspective , and your ability to communicate your ideas. I have already listened to several hours of your work and hope you come to Dallas some time and share your talents. Good luck, God bless, and keep up the great work.

Copics = ❤️ My Boss at my last job in Germany gave me a whole set for landscape architecture as a going-away gift! Copics also makes the brilliant Multiliner series of fine nibs. That sketch book with the dots is ingenious! My must-have is the parallel glider. For clearing my mind, I prefer garden therapy and running; I have to travel quite far from the tundra (Michigan) to see design inspiration by a professional.

Hi, I'm 14 and since little I had a natural talent for drawing, I still do, but now I feel a bit uncomfortable drawing things in general. Later, I found out about architecture and I realized that I liked making or drawing building and floor plans. I started watching you videos and today I considered subscribing and I do not regret a thing. Thanks for the great videos and thanks for the inspiration and ideas

You look awake in this one, fresh. Traveling does you good. For me it's the same. Traveling, taking pictures, recording sound. Everywhere I go I take something from that place, a leaf, natural cotton fibers, a small rock shard, a dried flower. For me the table in the living room is the most important, it is made of wood, it lives and breathes, it has scratches and scuffs, and if wax drips on it I sometimes leave it there, and sometimes I remove it. But it's no biggie if that happens. The head of the table sits flush against the wall and there is where I keep all my traveling souvenirs. Sometimes I replace them one by one, and put new stuff there for inspiration. Either way, guests always admire my table. It's a conversation starter.

You are amazing! I started following you today and have already learned so much. The way you present yourself, the way you speak, the way you work is so inspiring! Thank you! I start school this June, I am 31 years old but have dreamed of being an Architect since I was in high school. I have always love drawing but when I took the engendering design class my JR year and saw all the amazing models and blue prints I automatically fell in love! I remember graduating being in the principals list and to be honest I had no idea awards were offered in high school. I attended a college at the age of 20 give or take and dropped out for whatever reason (not that I do not want to share with you but too long of a story). I now have a 1 year old daughter and am happily engaged to the most wonderful, caring and loving woman whom has shown me so much love and respect apart from my beloved mother. I have been going through so much lately and hit rock bottom breaking point! Financially, mentally and everything else you can think of. My wife to be and precious daughter Athena are whom keep me sane and remind me what love is here on earth. I decided I was ready for change, for growth, I came to the sense I wanted to be a positive, motivating and influential father figure for my daughter. I decided I wanted to reach my every goal! I applied for The Academy of Art University in San Francisco and will shortly start my journey to becoming a licensed architect. I am well aware of the fact I am many years away from that dream but if I don’t start now, I will never get to where I want to be. I apologize for going on a never ending story but you asked to comment below. Thank you for reminding me why I love Architecture, I feel as if you have impregnated me with life through your teachings (multiple videos I have seen). Please continue to grow, teach us and remain feeding your heart that warm and humble love that shines through your being. Thank you!

Alumnicolor makes an amazing architects and engineering scale. They are a little more pricey $15-20 but they have the most pleasing concave tri-point shape that feels great in the hand. That being said in a studio environment I've lost/ had borrowed and unreturned at least 2 or them and 1 or so of just the basic plastic kind.

Those Copic markers reminds me of the small fortune I spent on Letaset markers back in the day (yea, I'm that old) when I was getting my Graphic Design degree. Sketch pads, tracing paper, and vellum were the "go to" items for thoughts. There is something about the tactile feel of those mediums and tools that bring back very fond memories.

Being inspired by your videos I started purchasing my sketching supplies. I started with the Pentel Graphgear 0.7mm, and Copic gray set that include a 0.5mm multiliner. Today beginning with a basic color set of about 7 colors that you recommended in one of your other videos or blog, I added about 15 other colors of the Copic Sketch markers thinking of colors used in building exterior and landscaping colors., plus a 0.25mm multiliner, a block erasor and pen erasor. I also picked up a Copic Sketch pad for my final design ideas that I want on better quality paper. So now I am building up my sketching skills on simpler small cheaper wire ringed notepad. I bought my supplies from a local small art store that has great service answering questions and a new member discount so only paid about $5.50/marker which is pretty decent compared to the big box art supply chains like Michaels. I like using engineering paper to think about floorplans because it has the squares on the back but not as good for color because it is light green. Looking forward to watching more of your videos.

don't under estimate the quality of a good sketch book and for the love of god, get yourself a heavy mechanical pencil. I find the heft of an all metal pencil grounds your lines ,the weight of the tool sort of gives you pause , every stroke has meaning. I find comfort in my Rotring aluminium mechanical pencil and wouldn't trade for anything else. I did give my 0.9 to the wife as a gift, then they stopped making it XD.The things you do for love ... The sort of sketchbook i use is made in germany by a company called Fantasticpaper, the authentics series. dense, white paper with a binder. it's organic and FSC to boot. don't know how they make it organic, but that's what it says on the label. The alcohol pens I use are unfortunately no longer made. they where RAL based so had quite a few of them at one point. basically I guess all architects use the same sort of pens. And I'm guessing the guy who invented the sign pen is rich beyond belief ^^ you didn't mention tracing paper? You don't carry a roll of the stuff around? :p Also a razor blade stuck in a rubber for erasing ink lines on the tracing paper ^^. nice to have a vid to start my week end :D
@30by406 жыл бұрын
the rotring would've been hard to part with...solid choice...just ordered a new kuri toga roulette (the rotating lead one)...i might have a problem with trying new writing implements, there must be a 12-step program for that. re: trace...yes of course...! i recorded a section on it but chopped it...perhaps a misstep as i use unconscionable amounts of it in the studio. trying to keep these vids a bit shorter...but always experimenting... thanks for always contributing such insightful commentary...
@stourleykracklite76634 жыл бұрын
Yeah, those heavy mechanical pencils are easier to lose than the cheap plastic ones, so I leave them at home. And I find no use for tracing paper in the field. I use lots of it in the studio, but on the go I do not find myself needing, or wanting, to overlay my thought-images.

What pulls me away is my interest in weird stuff in studying architecture to enjoy and have fun fill that curiousness in me when I see trees next to a building it comes to me that the trees were plants at some point is the architect had a plan for ten years or more ahead that amazes me til lithos day that’s why it’s my main goal to become the very best in this generation of evolution

By understanding each others struggles, we can all work together to help everybody's work become a little easier & a little more enjoyable. I'm a Architectural Building Technologist (big name, easy job HAHA), and a carpenter. I've realized that there are things a carpenter would like to see on plans that would make his life SOOOO much easier, and if the designer/architect/draftsman knows that ahead of time it only takes a small fraction of his time to make it so. There are also many things that I can do as a carpenter that will help out other trades electricians/plumbers/HVAC/dry wallers etc. "we're all in this together...so keep your stick on the ice!" ;)

Hi! Thanks for your sharing, it's the kind of initiative that drives me to do the same ^^ ...As I said it's not easy to find these supplies but if you love your work doing some sacrifices is not difficult!

Eric, Sir you are a wizard! Keep sharing... inspirational! It appears I cannot buy Muji Notebooks direct in Australia :( When I need a creative break, I head out with camera in hand, it gets my mind flowing to look at shapes, colours, etc., from nature and our surrounds.

Hi. Great videos. Thank you. What pulls me away from the studio is Barbering. I like its social aspect as well as the craft. It helps me to get away from a project and it keeps me in a creative activity.

You are so inspiring.Thanks for honesty and positive energy. I realy need to overcome my fear of sketching again after graduation.i ll start with ordering MUJI sketch books your making amazing jobs over them.(and thanks for not pretending GERMAN faking names like BERG ,COHN,SCHMIDT to sell a cheap North American job hiding behind GERMANS and Germany).

Hi i'm sixteen years and from the middle east however my school follows the British system so currently i'm in the 11th grade but this is my last year and so ill start college next year which is quite nerve racking. For that i've been asked to know now what i'm thinking for my future. Many of my close family member and friends always see me as an architect since the age of 6 when i loved build unique and crazy forts on the living room so i knew one day i want a life to in cooperate design element with a touch of nature for my love of it. After that in the age of 10 my parents decide to buy a land for an architect to make a lodge beside the beach which was when i was inspired to be an architect one day as i would always discuss on unique ideas for the lodge to and some elements of nature. I was always described as creative and i love art but my drawings are described as a bit messy but with a character. My other favourite subject is design and technology which i got an award for being the lead in my year group even though i started that course late with everyone in the class passing the ninth year and it was my first year in that course. In design and technology we do many works on wood like designing a mini shelf unit starting with your drawing then developing into a prototype then a actual thing where you get to use different materials like acrylic and if were lucky we could add on our wood for example pine with a section made from resin. Anther subject i love is math and physics with straight As but i love math even more than physics. However, one thing i'm bad at is my english language as its my second language but other than that i'm a leader and love to work in a group i also love to one day develop further with a business career. Many of my relatives are engineers but they always say i have a mind of an architect as they worked with many in past projects that i love to hear their stories with architects experience.

Great show. I am pleased we have identical preferences in pens, pencils and their colors. I would say that sketchbooks do *not* in my experience make good gifts for architects. I note you have very specific preferences, as do I, and while ours are similar I have never been given a sketchbook of any use. Most of them have been hardbound, which we agree, are non-starters. (Especially if the say something like "You are the Architect of Your Life" on the cover. I have been given accordion style sketchbooks- again I can't use them. Or if they are spiral-bound, as you and I prefer, they are either too large or too small or the paper is smooth or too toothy or it is gridded. (I don't care for any kind of gridding, thanks.)

Great stuff, sir. Architecture as a profession needs more positive spokespeople like you, given the many myth-conceptions young folks have about what it takes to be an architect. (e.g. "do I need to be good at math?" Answer: Hayyyuull, no, you probably will never use it once you graduate") Keep up the good work.

totally legit my friend. creative work is taxing...permission to leave and think about something else is actually a requirement of the design process...have you seen this video where I talk about bisociation: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/edeBqNCrv7zFYYk.html keep after it...this isn't easy work...

Im in my 1st year of my college and architecture is the course i took. I was doing well back then but I was discouraged by people who criticize archi. They would say "architecture is nothing without engineers" or "archts works for long hours but payed less" or "architects are engineers who cant do math"...... and now goddamn it everytime i make projects i get less motivated...
