Absolutely adore y'all. My husband of almost 20 years was a city boy and I'm a country girl who grew up in the Appalachian mountains and my family grew up on the land. My husband used to kindly joke about the way we lived.... Now that I'm a gardener, canner, a homeschooler, quilter etc. He's so thankful for marrying this country girl from the mountains. He knows we'll survive as long as I'm around lol.

Yes! It can happen. We were hoping to move for several years. We had down-payment but every land we found people were asking over asking price. We chose to stay, trust God and get our fruit trees, berry bushes, grapes in and extended our garden. We already started our journey 2 years ago with gardening and animals. Homeschooling....we always did that. God helps those who help themselves. Thank you for using your platform to speak out.

Wow, I sat watching this with pain in my heart and tears in my eyes. I felt a powerful pull 8 years ago, I begged, pleaded and pushed my reasons for that pull. Financially, age, health and personal situations prevented that. My children, grandchildren live in different states. Everyday my heart breaks, knowing deep in my soul what is happening. And yet only my son has begun to listen. I taught myself how to can last year. I planted as large of a garden as space allows in grow bags. I have purchased food by digital coupons and store flyers and discount meats. I had chickens but moved and the expense to restart is a lot. I purchased Heirloom Seeds as well as non. I feel so alone in this, close family members refuse to listen. Everything I do, I do almost entirely alone at 61. When my son visits he will bring me discounted meats for me to can. He tries, but the rest of the people around me wear blindfolds. I'm not worried for myself, if God takes me home, I will be okay. I am terrified for my family and a very challenging future.

@@sandraewers178 I am sorry to hear that. I only wanted a tiny home for basically the same. Land, livestock and a large garden was my hope and dream. Sending prayers, feeling alone is extremely difficult. Also prayers you and your family make it through this disaster.

Just found this channel and I love these two. We "jumped" one year ago and bought 7 acres in California. Yes, I know booooo California, but I couldn't be happier. I was a city boy, and now we have chickens, a small fruit orchard, multiple compost piles and 4 raised planters full of veggies. We are in the thick of the "pest" and "soil" phase! Learning and adapting everyday. The sooner you start, the sooner you can yield actual food in large amounts. Home schooling has been A HUGE blessing. Getting our 4 yr and 7yr old's out of the indoctrination camps has truly changed their lives. Many people have looked at us like we are completely nutz, but pay them no mind and PUSH FORWARD. Listen to these two guys! NOW is the time. We are BLESSED to have all of these resources and KZfaq channels to share ideas. TOGETHER we CAN do anything!

I truly appreciate your honesty…I personally tire of so called homesteaders that say oh look I have a huge fancy greenhouse with tons of plants I bought and oh my look at my flag stone walkways..etc..etc…true homesteaders are prepping for what’s to come…if you have so much money to waste on fancy things why not buy extra for the more needy. Money is sent to Patara on Appalachian Homesteading and she takes the money and buys items for the Giving box at church…share and care……I posted about the elderly lady in a nursing home lonely….so lonely…..please think how much influence the two of you have…all those followers can be influenced to do charity for someone….if you have extra garden items find a needy person., have senior family member ? Then freeze dry or dehydrate some for their shelves….think…I’m alone..I’m elderly …I’m scared ….I’m a mother and have to feed children…..it could be YOU…

You never know what people are doing with their money they earn. Just because they don't stay in the lane that "you" think they should be in doesn't mean they aren't doing things for the good. I've learned a lot from this channel as well as another channel who happens to have a beautiful new glass greenhouse and installing a beautiful new stone pathway.

Gardening in ground has gotten hard for me and so this year I got raised garden beds and I will be able to care for my garden much better. I am using the raised beds and 30 pots from trees that they planted on the property where I work. You work with what you can afford. I hope my garden does half as good as yours.

This “shift” is something Ive felt since my 30’s. I’m now 66. We built a couple of small businesses and hubs and I have developed some serious skills, over time. His are in home construction and repair. Mine are in accounting , banking and home keeping, gardening, food preserving etc. At ages 50 and 45 we found a wreck of a house on beautiful wooded rural acreage and made it our own over 12 years without debt. This house was 200 miles from where we lived. It was tough at times but we made it with many sacrifices. We paid off all debt and almost everything we made went onto our dreams. We bought good quality things while working so we dont have to keep replacing furniture, cars and everyday items. Mostly what we buy is used. Even the cabinets in our entire home are salvaged. Im so thankful we listened to our guts , did ghe work and pressed on. We feel we are at the right place at the right time. And God has blessed us every step of the way. If you feel it, do it. Make it happen. God will provide.

Thanks for sharing. The sad truth is that not everyone has the financial ability to buy land and establish a farm. Nor the family support to take care of that much responsibility. Many of us are seniors and the only thing we can do is plant a garden. And some people may be able to have backyard chickens but many won't be able to butcher them. It's very hard to kill a live animal but starvation can change that quickly. My grandparents survived the depression. It was so bad my mother would give up her food to her baby brothers who cried from hunger so badly she couldn't take it. So, they taught me how to butcher a chicken, and rabbit, when I was 10 years old. Over 50 years ago. They felt teaching me was the most important thing they could do, and they were right. BTW-keeping rabbits is easier than chickens but difficult to butcher because they are so adorable. Plus they scream like a baby if you don't do it right. So if you're going to choose this lifestyle, do your research, and figure out what you're willing to do to survive.

Thank you for this video. I hope and pray more and more young people do what you’re doing! Three years ago, I was living in a 55 and up concrete jungle in Ft. Lauderdale, “retired”. I began to see where things were going and wanted desperately to get back to the Midwest, buy a small farm, and gather my children and grandchildren close, but my situation was looking impossible to do so. God knew my heart, and out of the blue, the possibility of moving back to MO materialized! I bought a house that hadn’t been lived in for 10 years that sat on 10 acres. My son gutted the house and we basically rebuilt it, and I now live in a small 2/2 house perfect for my needs. My son and his family are also on the property in their own place now, and we’re slowly but surely becoming self sufficient. I thank God for my gifts every day, and I thank you young people for teaching others and living by example! Love your channel! May God continue to bless you all!

Thank you for your insight and for following your gut instincts! 2 years ago in January at 60 years old I had the need to "jump". I heard of 10 acres for sale and honestly all of the pieces fell into place. I just knew it was the right thing to do. 2 months later, it became clear why. I quit my job as an OTR driver to come in and run local so if I need to get home, I can. Thanks to you guys and the input you have, and my son that is on the same page (he lives about 6 miles). I'm now raising our chickens, pigs, ducks. Trying a bigger garden but working 65 hours a week, it's not pretty. But....I know in my heart that we can grow a good bit of what we'll need. The pantry is full, the bills are paid and this was the right move. I thank the Lord every day for the push to jump.

Thank you Zach and Jenn for your words of wisdom. 30 plus years ago we bought the 6 acres we are still on. It was bare ground. We lived on this property for 4 years in a couple of rvs until the land was paid off. Then we bought a new but several year old mobile that we are still in. Yes we made payments on it but that was still cheaper than rent was in town. We are now debt free and have been for ten years. It can be done. Friends called us crazy while they paid high rent and still are in town. Through the years We home schooled, raised gardens, chickens, goats, etc. Our age has us only doing gardens right now, but some family are considering moving back home and we can grow again from there. Even though we are seniors and have health issues it can be done. Don’t not start and don’t give up.

I’m a new subscriber and love your channel. I purchased Jenn’s cookbook and some items from Etsy. I’m not in a subdivision, but I did inherit my late fathers home within city limits. I made the decision to leave my country home which had a mortgage to my fathers home because I don’t have a monthly payment. My ultimate goal is to fix up my fathers home as I live in it and sell it. At which time I will purchase a small farm with little or no mortgage. That made sense to me at the time. I definitely miss country living! I am allowed to have 8 chickens which I currently have. Hopefully in the next couple years I’ll be on a small homestead. I’m a empty nester as my 3 boys are grown and have their own families. I am by myself which I know will be hard to maintain a homestead but it’s so worth it. Thank you for sharing

We live in town, I retired a year ago, my husband will in 5 years. This past year I have been canning and preserving, filling my pantry. I have a big container garden. I watch for sales and stock my pantry and freezer with items I can't grow. We can't have farm animals in town, but do support our local farmers first. We can't live in the country here Michigan and raise animals, physically we can't do that. Our family looked at us like we were crazy canning and preserving but after a year we now have 2 years worth of food, less debt they cheer us on. Ty for sharing your story.

Yes! Absolutely yes to everything you said. I would just add one thing. I would encourage everyone to not make their decisions out of fear. Try to stay calm and "listen" for the answers. I got to my land. And financially, I should not have been able to. And I'm far from a calm person. But Every Single Time I was quiet, calm, and "listened" as the answers came to me. Solutions came out of the thin air. I was not a believer before moving to my land. But there were far too many crazy coincidences that got my house built and got me moved up here. I believe now. God is good. He was with me when I was living in the urban apartment. He is with me here. When the time was right, He moved me to my land. Don't get me wrong, I was working my butt off and saving every rare free penny. But when I was on the right path, doors opened. I want to encourage everyone to keep moving forward. It is do-able.

Prayers needed. I rent and I put in raised gardens every year. But becuz of a dangerous tree up against my home. I have to rip out 2 of my gardens. And do my best to save what soil, bricks and plants that I can. In hopes that I can put it all back when they are done. I don't ask for prayers very often. But this is heart breaking. I have been working so hard to put these gardens in. With dealing with a very painful medical issues. I have to go thru the expense of replacing the plants / seeds / soil and hope that I can get everything done before a medical procedure on the 16th of next month. I also have to hope that it wont be to late to get my plants/seeds back in the ground & get a harvest before winter. My heart is broken & my nerves are shot. I know panicking about this coming food shortage wont help. But I can honestly say I am a little scared of what is to come. I have been learning everything I can about gardening, making foods from scratch like breads, I was hoping to get a harvest this year and learn how to can. Well I am off to put in another seed order & hope they get here in time. Then I have to go back outside again today & work on ripping it all up. I have until Sunday night to save what I can. I know this probably don't seem like a big deal to others. But learning how to garden and get back to living a basic life is so important to me & my family. Especially with the hard times coming. On top of all of this. Becuz my hubby wont take a certain "medication" he is getting kicked out of the military. This Tuesday. I guess that's kind of a blessing. Because we don't have to remain stationed here. & we can find a place back east when all the dust settles. I pray my hubby can sell his small home for a good price. Maybe we can join all of you great homesteaders.

“Even if your family thinks you’re crazy, just start and don’t loose hope.” This is my life. This is why I drove 6389253849 miles, camped in a tent with my dogs and learned how to butcher and process chickens. Back home, my “people” didn’t get it and it has been a long frustrating, lonely, extremely hard work, season of life for me. Hope had been dwindling, but never lost. But unexpectedly, that push back changing. There is less resistance and even support now. Options are opening and this lifestyle is becoming more within my grasp everyday. I have only the Lord to thank because He IS the only one who could really see inside my heart and give me what I needed. So for anyone also in a position of longing and not feeling understood; you’re time is coming, just start and don’t loose hope.

I do all the prepping in this house...at times I just want to quit and let the chips fall where they may... but I'm not a quitter and so I pick myself back up and keep on planting, growing, canning, dehydrating and all the other skills I have. I want to move out of the city because it worries me, and of course I want chickens again and maybe a milk cow(never had one) because I could use the health benefits that come from raw milk. Please pray for us that my family will see the "handwriting on the wall" and want to be self sufficient too. God bless you and your family for all you do.

Another great video! I grew up learning the homesteading lifestyle from my grandparents and a few aunts and uncles that were old enough to be my grandparents! As time went on, generation after generation drifted away and settled down to THE GOOD LIFE IN THE CITIES...except me. I was always fascinated how my grandparents lived in the pre-Great Depression Era. I married a wonderful man that supported my lifestyle choices. Family and friends thought it was "quaint" that I hung my clothes on the line instead of using our perfectly good dryer. They thought I was "silly" growing and canning our own food when I could just go buy it! Then a few years back, things started to change. Clothes lines came out, gardens went in. Canners and dehydrators were being fired up and pantries were getting stocked. Romance novels have been replaced with KEEPING HONEY BEES and THE VEGETABLE GARDENER'S BIBLE. I'm so proud of them all!!! So Jen, find peace in knowing you're doing what God has laid on your heart. You kids are leading by example. Take heart in knowing that it does work. Those that want to learn, WILL. You have no control over those that won't. It's like that quote: DO YOUR BEST. LEAVE THE REST. EVEN ANGELS CAN DO NO MORE! (unknown)

We eliminated the extra expenses and services. Our income is less, but our monthly spending funds are much more. We invested in things like a small tractor and key pieces of equipment. Like you explained, the eggs, dairy, orchard, berry bushes, herbs, and garden really sustain us. And the food tastes amazing! Wonderful to see others doing this and you are not alone!

Thx guys !!! We definitely FEEL that shift, have felt it for 10 yrs, it started for us spiritually, then about 4 yrs ago we began to prepare for something that was coming. We didn’t know what it was at the time but we could feel it. We live in a city with a city size property, like 1/8 acre. BUT, we have committed our entire backyard and front yard to growing food. I currently have 27 citrus and fruit trees, 17 berry bushes, a 9’x10’ greenhouse, chicken coop with 16 hens and 2 roosters, a successful aquaponics system, I raise quail and fixin to start raising meat rabbits. I grow in containers and in ground. We grow plenty of corn, sunflowers and comfrey to help with the feed expense for the chickens and quail. I sell chickens, quail, pickled quail eggs, chicken eggs, vegetable plants, fruit and citrus trees. We are learning to preserve our food. It’s been a great learning experience, we have definitely been preparing and learning on a small scale and we are now looking for some land to purchase and start our farm. We are 61 yrs old and sometimes it seems like we’re to old to start , but like you said , what we’re doing is not just for us but also for our family . Right now only one 8 year old granddaughter works with us in the garden, she has even learned how to process chickens and quail and our 2 year old granddaughter loves feeding the fish and digging up potatoes, she actually started when she was 1 year old. Our 8 year old granddaughter started growing a small garden at home and is getting tomatoes, cucumbers and strawberries. Thanks for your videos, I’ve also learned about comfrey from you, and now I make comfrey salve and I sell that too , I can’t make enough to supply the demand, I can’t make enough pickled quail to supply the demand , I have a list of names of people waiting for hens, bc I can only hatch out so many at a time. I quit doing construction and now spend my time working in our backyard urban farm. WE LOVE IT !!! Oh !!! We took a picture with guys at the Homestead conference!!! Y’all be blessed and keep up the great work !!!

We had goats ,cows, horses, chickens , dogs ,cats and over the years other types of animals like rabbits a pet skunk , pigeons ect. And almost all of my children are Self Sufficient . I am also trying to encourage people to prepare . God Bless You Both .

You can definitely make it happen if you set your mind to it and keep praying about it. After seeing y'all speak last year at the fair in TN, we decided no matter what we were moving away from our house in a neighborhood to out in the country. We didn't know how it would all work out but we put our faith in God cause we knew he was telling us to get out of debt and get some land to start our homestead. We now live on 6.3 acres that we own debt free. We bought a camper and are living on our land while we save to build a house. It's not easy at all but knowing this land is ours no matter what gives us a since of freedom and peace we never had before.

Im doing it guys. We moved from New Hampshire to Texas a few months ago outside city limits in a doublewide on 5 acres of land! I just started a garden, I have 5 kunekune, we have chickens, and a livestock guardian puppy I’m training. we are getting a lot more animals and the plan is to eventually upgrade to 20+ acres! Im currently a stay at home mom, but i used to be a vet tech so I have medical knowledge and supplies. I also breed german shepherds. Unfortunately I’m doing this by myself my husband works a lot but eventually I’m gonna get him home. Baby steps but ill get there. You guys inspired me over the years :)

I am by myself and would need HELP to do it all. Would be nice to find a compound as you call it. I can't stand more than a few minutes. I sit down to cook for about 10 minute's. That's becoming harder. I used to be full of strength. Did all the things homeschooling, gardening, sew, food co-op I loved it. I BELIEVE in JESUS CHRIST as my LORD and SAVOIR. You are a lot younger than I. My parents have died. I am an only child and last one alive in the family. I agree with what you're saying. Before we divorced we had a group of friends like minded looking for land to live on the same property. Live in log cabins each family. One community house to have homeschooling, cook, can our food together. We were doing this already, living miles apart. We even had a Pastor. The door was closed.. We started this. In the 1980. I still would love to be in nature acre's of land with my dream home a long cabin (cedar) since I was 10 years old. So, tell me, where can I move to❓And live this DREAM. Like you have. I need help to go to the woods. My mind is ready. I will continue to pray and ask GOD for direction. His direction. I lived with my mom her last year of life. We loved it very much. I kept my home. She died 2016. She was 96. We had a lot of great times. Thank you JESUS. I Love you both very much. I am very BLESSED knowing your Mom and Auntie moved in on your propety. Thank you JESUS❗🀄💯👍🌹🌹🌹🌻🌻🌻🇺🇸✡️✝️🛐🛐🌻🌻🌻🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🤟🤟🤟🤟🤟🤟🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻🀄🀄🀄🀄🀄🀄🌹 Thank you FATHER in JESUS'S NAME. AMEN. I do have good Christian friends with different dreams. City, with no gardens.. When Mt St Helens blew several families from our church had to temporarily leave our homes. We met w/ motor homes, campers, tents, sleeping bags...whatever we could gather and lived together on acreage owned by a local family. We cooked together, ate together, watched the “ littles”. It was a really great experience even tho it was only for a couple weeks. I’d do it again in a heartbeat

I planted some potatoes this year. First time growing them. First time really growing anything food wise. I live in a suburb, so starting out with small gardens. My backyard is big enough for raised beds and containers. I haven't gotten to the point of raised beds but do have 4 large pots for my potatoes and sweet potatoes. I also had a small garden bed that I planted some potatoes in and to my surprise, 3 voluntary pie pumpkin vines. I threw a rotting pie pumpkin out there last October for the wildlife. Today I just harvested the potatoes from that bed. Small new potatoes, not many.... however, they grew in my garden! The container ones are still growing and I can't wait to see the yield from them. In another bed my son planted noodle beans. Starting to see the bean pods form. They get to be a foot long! God Bless you and your family!

I'm nearly 66, but I've gardened most of my life. I would love to have a small farm but too old. However I'm teaching gardening to kids and growing as much as I can on my half acre plus I have chickens. Sadly so many r living in HOAS'S and can't even have a garden. After moving from Virginia to Texas, we wanted a home. We specifically said no HOA, so we got our little house and enough land for me. We're building my She Shed Seed Shed for starting my stuff.

My daughter and family have moved to our farm a year and a half ago. Living in a travel trailer for the past year and a half and almost ready to move into a shop home. We have worked our tails off the past few years! We garden and preserve everything. We have around seventy chickens and lots of goats. Currently milking four. We have learned so much as far as animal husbandry! I can no longer be in the Sun . My body reacted a couple of years ago and went haywire . My point is while she does a lot of the outside work in the garden and I do all of the canning , dehydrating, taking care of eggs and all the milk products. Our husbands and the grandkids and the two of us are all working together and it’s a lot of hard work. I wouldn’t have it any other way. My other two kids know that the door is open always. My other daughter lives in town a few miles away and she has been preparing the last few years. She cans everything in sight😂. We all got really serious a couple of years ago about being self sustaining and being prepared.

A few years ago, my husband was layed off work for a whole year. I had been canning coupon shopping and stocking up for 3 years before that. We lived off what we had for a whole year until he was called back to work. Never had to get help with bills. We grew plants and sold them, had yards sales, went to swap meets and we payed all our bills. Today I am finally back to where we were again and know I need 3x the amount of what we had before. So have been canning meats, freeze drying, dehydrating, glassing our eggs. We have set up for 5 families to live with us. I'm freeze-drying milk because we have not got our goats yet. But have talked to farmers who have milk cows. My garden is 3x bigger as well as the other 5 families at their homes. I always say God made that rainbow as a reminder for all of us. That even though it is a storm right now that rainbow will come out in the end. The 5 families have all different skills from home remedies one can make, security (x military) electrical and construction, gardening and canning, as well as a vet for animals as well as us and a nurse practitioner and a physical therapist as well as a mechanic. We try to cover all bases so that we are set to take on whatever this world throws at us. Always have 3 forms of backups. (like, electric, solar, generator and lamps.) for everything. God Bless and keep building your dream and remember God will send that rainbow.

Or my hubby does I do the putting up. I'm not able to work. But I do can, freeze, and air seal. We are thinking of getting a freeze dryer. I'm not sure if if worth the cost for us. I went to the store today I left many foods untouched bc of the price. I only go to the grocery store once a month sometimes 2 months. I also filled my car today. I only needed a half tank it cost me 30.00 I don't go out anyplace to often mainly to the Dr. My largest concern is my girls & grandchildren. They all live in other states. I'm very interested in learning how to replace our meds. Any suggestions on a book preferably with pictures as well to identify the stuff from the yard or woods?
