During winter I always wait until the engine reaches at least 100 degrees before taking off.

For what it's worth, these new electric oil pumps can and do keep the oil pressure up at low idle. My T680 holds a steady 40psi at any rpm.

With my company, no Apu, and the Volvo 760 only will high idle at 640rpm. 2022 model year. I'm going to bring a brick with me this winter to solve that low idle....

As a veteran Cummins engine mechanic, I concur with Dave. Between the outrageous cost of parts, and labor, and the extensive wait times due to the shortage of mechanics, following these suggestions Dave makes in this video could be some of the best time, and money you ever spent.

I treat mine for algae every quarter,still keep an eye out for it. Normally 1 bottle does 4 treatments so 30 bucks a year. Oil every 30k

If you have "algae" in your tank, your getting real old fuel. It's not really algae it's microbes that feed on your fuel.

I've had alot of algie in the tanks and I was draining 12 Oz bottle worth of algie from water separator filter. That cost me only $1300..before I bought the truck it sat for couple of years. Anyhow now I religiously not only change my oil every 50k miles like our pal but I also add fuel add-ons to kill the algie every 6 months.

The other benefit of high idle is it creates enough heat to fully expand the rings and creates less blow by than low idle.

50k on an oil change....is really pushing it, even with analysis. Myself, I change at 20k because oil/filters are cheaper than a worn out-blown-noisy engine. Do agree with the warm ups & idling. Each their own.

Used to be, high idle till oil temp starts to rise. Unless it's a 2cycle Detroit. Slam the door on your hand and drive it like you're mad at it.

Oil change every 12000 miles? That's once per month basically. This outfit I'm with now wants an oil change/PM every 30k miles. It's their equipment so I'll do as they ask. If it were my own truck I'd say every 24k miles. But now, after hearing every 12k I might reconsider my oc intervals, had I owned my own equipment.

I change my oil every 50000 kms and I don’t idle overnight unless it’s extremely cold

Hey Dave I am in a 2017 KW T680 with a Cummins Motor. As far as your advice on not low idling the truck, what about if the truck's idle speed can't be bumped up?

Dont forget all the other filters on the truck, coolant, fuel, air. Consumables are cheap engines are not

I’m currently driving a 2010 prostar with a 450 ISX and I religiously let it idle at low idle till the air pressure is built up then bump the idle up too 1,000 rpm’s too warm it to at least 170 before I pull out. Some might say I’m wasting time but I it gives me enough time to do a good pre-trip

Another thing you should never do to your diesel engine is, vote in a President that puts in a Secretary of Transportation named Buttigieg! With a name like Buttigieg, it's got to suck!!!
