I've said it before, but I absolutely love the EOS R as I did my 5D Mark IV before it. In this video I take you through 5 TIPS and TRICKS for the Canon EOS R. My focus is mainly on tips and tricks that suit video shooters but Photographers will benefit form this content as well as a couple of my tips and tricks carry over. I feel like the EOS R has the edge over the 5D Mark IV for photographers who want to shoot a bit of video here and there and certainly with the functionality for hybrid shooters I think you should really consider the R if you are wanting to keep within the Canon ecosystem.
Tips
1. Use the Lock Button while shooting - 0:23
2. Program the down button to menu - 1:40
3. Use C3 to record from photo mode - 2:47
4. Remap AF ON button to Record - 4:22
5. Turn off record via the shutter button - 5:00

Very useful tips. I got a very cheap, almost new R, recently. For that price, it is a fantastic full frame camera. The only thing I do not like is the RF mount. No 3- party lenses. And the Canon RF lenses are so big and bulky. But other than that - love it already. I missed my 6D, and was looking for a used one. But the R was too good a deal...
@MichaelDrowley

The R is super solid! You could adapt 3rd party EF lenses no problem and the 50 RF 1.8, 35 RF 1.8, 16 RF 2.8 are all pretty decent lenses for the price.

The tip about recording straight from photo mode and it jumping to C3 is awesome! C3 was where I had my slow motion settings 120fps at 720 and I accidentally hit record while in photo mode recently and found the slow motion footage when I imported everything but couldn't figure out what had happened. Problem solved! I'm going to move my normal video mode to C3, thanks!

These are great tips! This is EXACTLY how I have my EOS R setup. I do have the touch bar set to ISO which I love. It's great to able to switch ISO quickly as I don't have any new lenses yet with the control ring. Once I have ISO set, I'll hit the lock button to prevent any unintentional changes. I don't, however, struggle with hitting the touch bar by accident like some users are complaining about but still lock it down. One thing I do notice is that since the AF ON button is so close to my thumb, that I hit it more often than I'd like while holding the camera and it starts recording when I don't intend it to. No big deal as the AF ON button is in a much better place than the original record button!

NEBlackshirts Legend! It’s the best setup for the R for sure! I also don’t get false touches on the Touch Bar, I actually really like it. I use it for only digital punch in when shooting and then I like to use it to navigate photos when reviewing. I can use the control ring adapter for ISO, if I run without the control ring when I go to the ND adapter, I will use the Touch Bar for ISO instead! Thanks for checking out the video! Appreciate your comments here mate

Hi, thank you for all your videos on the Canon EOS R and video production. Very insightful! Quick question: how much do you still like shooting photos and videos with your EOS R? I wanted to go lighter and switched to the A6400 a few months back, but I am missing Canon’s simplicity, vast range of good and affordable lenses and the full frame look... so I am contemplating switching back. Are you still happy with video quality in 1080p? I am just an enthusiast who does a bit it KZfaq and “semi professional” video interviews... thanks in advance for your precious two-cents! :)

Thanks Christophe, appreciate your kind worlds. In short, I love it. The versatility of the camera and solid image and the fact it is a really easy to get good colours out of it is great. I know many who have switched over and are more than happy they did. Remember that the 4K is cropped so that is consideration as it has a full frame look but not like the 1080p which I really like out of the EOS R.

My R is coming in the mail, so trying to learn everything before it arrives haha. One thing I’ve not seen yet, what’s the optimal ISO setting for this camera when it comes to video? I’m a photographer by trade so my instincts say it should be as low as possible to squash out noise... but other videos have hinted at 400 for video. Hell if I know lol.
@MichaelDrowley
@MichaelDrowley 4 жыл бұрын
HeliRy So good! R is the goods. 400 is what we call the native ISO for the sensor. A tad more noise but smoothes our colour gradation, especially in the shadows. Standard profiles are fine in ISO 100 but log always go for ISO 400 and if you need to denoise later then do that instead of sacrificing colour gradation which may look like banding in the image.

@@MichaelDrowley I upgraded from the 6D which I did not use much for Movies, so I am very much in a learning mode as far as using the R for Movies. I just received my RODE videomic Pro as wind noise and lens noise was annoying using the internal mics. The learning from that, and mentioned in several KZfaq videos, is to set the camera audio to manual and turn the gain down very low, while turning the 20dB boost switch on for the RODE mic. What most KZfaq videos neglect to say is that you also need to boost the audio in post production. Not sure I have solved the Lens noise though. I tried the c log in the last few days and I will make some comments on you other KZfaq video which deals specifically with that feature.
@brucewarren9563
@brucewarren9563 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Michael, I tried my external mic out in a real world situation yesterday, for the first time. I am still picking up lots of lens noise. The camera settings I used were the factory default for C3 in movie mode. Although I had previously set the audio menu up for Manual Mic with the gain turned down very low, what I discovered is that because I had the camera in Manual Movie mode when I set up the audio it only affected some modes, which did not include the C3 setting, which is essentially an auto setting. I have since gone into the menu again and changed the audio for C3 to manual. Despite not having the best audio settings for my external mic, I don't think it would have improved the problem I am having with lens noise, by much. I have uploaded a small clip as an example to dropbox: www.dropbox.com/s/q98rs2gmj33nuyy/Ibis.mp4?dl=0 You will notice a continuous clicking, which is due to the lens with camera in Servo mode. The lens is a Canon EF 70-300mm 1:4-5.6 IS USM. I expect it will also happen with other lenses. Seems to me the only solutions would be to manual focus or use a long lead on the mic, which would then need a stand or such. I guess I could try filtering out the noise in post production, but suspect that will not be easy.
@MichaelDrowley
@MichaelDrowley 5 жыл бұрын
@@brucewarren9563 Hey bruce, thanks for the update and for sending through the clip to me. I would say the best way I could think to caputre that scene would be to manual focus. Or you could use auto focus to get critcal focus, then switch to Manual before you hit record. If you did need to use the auto focus, what I would also suggest is to first capture the bird (or scene) for video with AF, then capture a second clip of the bird (scene) with the AF off. Then use the first clip's video and match it to the second clips audio. For interviews or piece to camera stuff, you would be better to get an external mic off the camera and a field recorder or a longer cable extension back to the camera so that you can get the camera off the lens altogether like you said. One final thing may be to look into some zooms that have much quiter AF in them, the L series would be much better in like the 70-200 f 2.8 but obviusouly much more expensive option. The plasticness of the EF-s 70-300 makes it produce much more AF noise. Hope that helps, thanks again for sending through the clips!

Got a question for you - I'm finding that the Canon EOS R is not remembering the Custom Button settings when I power it down, then turn it back on. That can't be right. I can set the custom buttons and use them as set, but if I turn off the camera, everything is gone when I turn it back on. That has been happening, I notice, with ISO adjustments, etc., that I make on the fly in the custom modes. If one of my C settings, let's say C1 is 24fps, 1/50 shutter speed, F/1.8 and 100 ISO, and adjust the 100 to 200 or 400 because I'm indoors and then I power off the camera, when I turn the camera back on, it's back to ISO 100. So confusing and frustrating! Perhaps you have a suggestion? What am I missing?

Asal Al Awsi Hey Asal, I’m not sure as I have not used the Sony A7iii. I’m a canon user so I predominantly use and review Canon gear. I know the A7iii has better 4K processing and no crop in 4K. Though the A7 autofocus is not as good as on the Canon EOS R in face tracking mode. It’s close to as good but it will still hunt every now and then on the Sony whereas the Canon stays on focus and is rock solid.
