Great tips. Switching to a single fly has helped me a lot in the turbulent water.

Devin: great instructional video. Thanks for sharing your wisdom. Loved the "use bigger flies"...every fly shop wants to sell us 24g midges for every water condition under 65 degrees. Maybe they know we won't catch anything and will resort to hiring their guide?? Great info.

Always something to learn from you 🙏 When it comes to casting one fly I’m guessing you are using 2 weight rod ?In general do you use 2 weight rod the most when euro nymphing?
@tacticalflyfisher38172 жыл бұрын
I use a lot of different rods depending on the situation. It's more based on the size/velocity of the river and fish and the corresponding tippet size I'm using. On smaller water, a 2 weight is my preferred choice, but I fish a lot of 3 and 4 weights on larger rivers.

Thank you Devin. I like your reel. Where to get one? That's ok I found it on your website.
Devin, Will you do a video on staying hydrated fishing all day as I usually pack a frozen plastic bottle of water when I’m on the stream and keep xtra in a yeti in my vehicle which sometimes is a couple of mile walk back. I fish primarily Pa and Wv. I know when the water gets warmer in the plastic it is not very healthy. Any tips would be great.
@tacticalflyfisher38172 жыл бұрын
I'll admit that I probably am not as diligent about staying hydrated as I should be. I have an Umpqua water bottle holder attached to my hip pack which I can put a .75 L water bottle in that I clip to the pack with a carabiner I have attached. In rivers where I don't worry about the taste or unexpected pollution, I also bring a Katadyn Befree filter that is very handy for quickly drinking from the river. You can see that bottle in this previous video kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nbqDma-Qq9zGias.html

What euro flys do you recommend for tailwaters? Where the only insects are mainly midges, sow bugs, and scuds? Or do euro nymph flies really just work anywhere? If there is one fly, which one do you recommend for me to buy?
@tacticalflyfisher38172 жыл бұрын
Many of our videos have been shot on tailwaters where I just put tungsten beads on the typical flies that work in those rivers. Most standard Euro patterns will work fine as well despite many folks saying they won't. Junk flies like mops, worms, and eggs can be good choices year round as well especially when you need to have a fly you can add a lot of weight to in order to get a smaller lightly weighted fly down.
@Rubo72 жыл бұрын
@@tacticalflyfisher3817 so that huge bead doesn't affect the fish biting the fly? Even if they are really pressured trout?
@tacticalflyfisher38172 жыл бұрын
@@Rubo7 It doesn't have to be a huge bead. Most of my smaller flies are tied with 2 mm and 2.3 mm beads and they don't seem to pose an issue. I come from a background of indicator fishing small imitative nymphs on pressured tailwaters. I catch more fish on them now than I did in the years where that was my focus.

I am finding it nearly impossible to fish summer time flows in the 123 cfs in Missouri. I have caught fish but it seems higher flows work much better for this technique. any suggestions would really be appreciated.
@tacticalflyfisher38172 жыл бұрын
Glenn, we have a catalog of videos with tips for various conditions. There is also my book Tactical Fly Fishing and our Modern Nymphing and Adaptive Fly Fishing videos which would all help. I've fished the Missouri a lot in the past with Euro nymphing and other techniques. It's certainly effective there as it is elsewhere. Without watching you fish it's hard to make recommendations but if you study our content and try to emulate, I'm sure you'll find success.

Um, the river your standing in front of is not a high water river, so, are your tips adiquite for an actual blown out river that is way above the high mark? Also, you never mentioned water temp, does that have anything to do with trout feeding habits, and where they might hold in a freestone river? How long does a trout quit feeding in low water temps? I have read trout can go without any food for months during winter. I have actually rescued a trout that was frozen in ice in a stream and picked it up out of the ice by hand, put it in the non frozen part of flowing water and it swam away to the bottom, might this have anything to do with trout feeding habits?

I guess you'll have to try the tips and find out. And if you want a full treatment on water temperature and the biological response of trout, you should check out my book Tactical Fly Fishing.
